Ex-competidores do MMA e professores respeitados, Royce Gracie e Rafael Cordeiro estiveram juntos na última semana, na academia Kings MMA, em Huntington Beach na California.

O encontro se deu já que o filho de Royce, Khonry Gracie, esteve na academia para afiar suas armas visando um próximo compromisso no Bellator. Royce fez questão de agradecer o apoio de Rafael nos treinamentos do filho, e o professor de MMA tratou de voltar no tempo e resgatar a memória do início marcante do esporte que conquistou o mundo.

“Enfrentar qualquer um a qualquer momento”, relembra Rafael. “A gente fazia isso numa época que não tinha dinheiro. Era pela honra, não tinha peso nem nada. Essa é a verdadeira essência da arte marcial. Trabalhar pela defesa da honra.”

“Sou um produto do que o meu pai criou.” Completou Royce ao lembrar do grande mestre Helio Gracie. “Foi ele quem criou isso tudo e só faço o que aprendi com ele.”

Gabi Garcia has finally an opponent in sight.

The Jiu-Jitsu black belt will debut in MMA against a Chinese judoka on a big event in Japan, at the end of 2015.

This is what she confirmed to GRACIEMAG in the morning of this Wednesday, July 15.

The new moment in the career already motivated a lot of changes in Gabi’s life.

She moved from São Paulo, Brazil, to Huntington Beach, CA, where she is living with her mother.

“She came to help me stay in the diet and also to help me deal with all those changes.”

Gabi’s new routine makes her drive to three training grounds in Southern California.

She goes to Rafael Cordeiro’s Kings MMA to train striking, then she’s off to Cobrinha BJJ for her ground work and finally she joins the ranks of Jacob Harman’s Calvary Chapel wrestling camp.

“I’m going to change my ticket and go back to Brazil. I can’t take it anymore,” she jokes about the intensity of the training she’s been doing.

Before the MMA debut, Gabi has a commitment with grappling at the end of August, the 2015 ADCC.

Champion in 2011, in Nottingham, UK, and in 2013, in Beijing, China, Gabi wants her third title in the +60kg division.

“The MMA training is so hard that the other day when I went to train at Cobrinha’s it was like I was in heaven. It really takes a while to get used to get punched in the face.”

Gabi can’t give out the name of the organization she’s going to compete in MMA yet, but she guarantees it’s going to be a huge event.

She told GRACIEMAG she still does not know the name of the opponent, but she knows it’s a Chinese judoka.

“There are four other girls in my division. This first opponent is bigger than me!” says Gabi, who told us she will compete at the 93kg (205lb) division.

O que você faria se, a um mês da luta da sua vida, você sentisse uma contusão apavorante no seu joelho, a primeira lesão nessa área de sua vida, e tão forte a ponto de você ouvir um estouro no joelho, seguida de dor, muita dor?

Se você fosse Rafael dos Anjos (24v, 7d), você manteria a calma e, um mês depois, desembarcaria no Rio de Janeiro com o cinturão peso leve do UFC, um prêmio ao esforço e à persistência de um campeão que não liga para contusões, pois sua motivação era maior.

Apesar do treino debilitado neste mês antes da batalha contra Anthony Pettis, ex-campeão que não perdia no UFC desde 2011, a preparação de Rafa já estava mais do que cumprida. E não começara em março, tampouco neste ano.

Rafael dos Anjos, 30 anos, começou a ser campeão do UFC muito antes. Em 2003, também como peso leve, foi campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, como faixa-roxa, após seis lutas duríssimas – a final contra Lucas Leite, hoje um competidor consagrado também, mas de kimono.

Com a mente forte de quem se acostumara a vencer, cumpriu uma estrada de 12 anos nos ringues até o amadurecimento técnico, e o cinturão.

No último dia 14 de março, Rafa atingiu o topo do mundo do MMA, no UFC 185. Mas chegou a pensar em não lutar no sábado, devido a dor.

“Quando me machuquei, não conseguia fazer nada nos treinos na primeira semana. Comecei levemente a voltar treinando boxe, mas plantado, com as pernas totalmente imóveis, só usava as mãos. Na segunda semana voltei um pouco melhor, mas nada de wrestling, nada de quedar ou tomar queda. Fiz só um pouco de Jiu-Jitsu para soltar. Não foi fácil não”, recordou, em papo com o GRACIEMAG.com.

“No dia em que machuquei passou pela minha cabeça adiar a luta, como é o normal nessa situação. Antes de decidir se cancelava ou mantinha a disputa, porém, a primeira coisa que fiz foi orar e abrir a Bíblia. Abri em Ezequiel 37, versículo 6, e Deus falou comigo. Estava escrito:

‘E porei nervos sobre vós e farei crescer carne sobre vós, e sobre vós estenderei pele, e porei em vós o espírito, e vivereis, e sabereis que eu sou o Senhor.'”

Ao interpretar com isso que a empreitada daria certo, Rafa seguiu em frente. “Na hora da luta estava com o ligamento colateral medial de um dos joelhos ferrados, mas não doeu em momento nenhum, e não incomodou em hora nenhuma da batalha. Isso sem injeção nenhuma, só oração. Lutei com muita garra e coração, e aconteceu aquilo que vocês viram aí. Graças a Deus”, agradeceu.

Rafael agora vai ficar três meses afastado do Octagon, por conta do machucado no joelho e outros tantos no rosto. Na volta, deve reencontrar um velho conhecido: ou o cowboy americano Donald Cerrone, a quem venceu em 2013, ou o russo Khabib Nurmagomedov, de quem perdeu por decisão unânime em 2014. Os dois brigam pelo posto de desafiante no UFC 187, dia 23 de maio.

Seja quem for, Rafael será a partir de agora um lutador diferente. Ainda mais confiante em sua tática de não dar espaços e sufocar os rivais. E com o joelho capaz de sustentar um belo cinturão pelo qual lutou a vida toda.

GRACIEMAG: How are you leading up to this decisive clash with Travis Browne at the April 19 UFC in Orlando?

FABRICIO WERDUM: I feel in the best moment of my career. I’m 36 and I’m living my most professional phase as a fighter. I’m also a UFC commentator in the Spanish version that goes out to Latin America. And I have a third responsibility as the UFC ambassador in Latin America. My role is to introduce the sport and explain the UFC to people who don’t know it. Not to the fans, but to the new potential spectators. So I have three jobs in the UFC: fighter, commentator and ambassador. And physically and technically I feel very good.

So you’re constantly either training or traveling – is that it?

Yes. The UFC sends me to Mexico, Colombia, Chile and many other countries. I stay in each place for three days and promote the outfit in every medium. The UFC is investing a lot in these new markets. I also tape the show “UFC Ahora,” a Spanish-language version of “UFC Now,” with Kenny Florian and Daniel Cormier. There’s also a Latin American “TUF” in the works, whose registration is still open for rookie athletes. The coach must be Cain Velasquez, against either me or Travis Browne. Whoever wins this bout is going to be a “TUF” coach in Latin America. It will be special, as the reality show will be gathering fighters from many countries.

How is your camp for the Travis fight?

The training is excellent; I’ve now been training for seven years with Professor Rafael Cordeiro at Kings MMA gym. The wrestling aspect is in the hands of Kenny Johnson, who adapts takedowns to MMA like no one. For almost two years I’ve been honing my BJJ and doing physical preparation at Rubens Cobrinha’s academy. Today I weight 109kg and feel great. Cobrinha is a very serious guy as a coach, he demands a lot of repetition, so I think I’m going in very well technically as well.

How do you evaluate your BJJ today?

I hear a lot of people in MMA say: “You don’t need to train BJJ anymore; you’re already good.”I think the exact opposite. Since everybody already knows my BJJ is strong, I must practice that much more to get it even better – otherwise my foes will be able to avoid it easily. These days I get to Cobrinha’s school at 8 a.m. and he only lets me leave at 2:30 p.m.! I’m on the mat the whole time – I only step off it to eat something and take supplements. I don’t want to have happen to me what I saw happen to many BJJ fighters who started training boxing and muay thai and had their games change completely. I’m aware that my game is on the ground. Once
we’re down, I know the fight must be finished; I can’t lose the position.

What is the worst part about transitioning from BJJ to the UFC?

Getting hit in the face, of course. If you watch my bouts you’ll see I don’t take many punches when I’m on the ground. I manage to defend well down there – the guy does hit, but not very hard. What helped me a lot in my transition was the self-defense program at the Behring schools. Behring, Corleta e Hunter – that makes all the difference. It’s the strong base for the guy to defend himself in the octagon.

What is Travis’ strong point?

He has very sharp muay thai and showed it recently. He has three wins with the best KO of the night, and that certainly cannot be underestimated. Travis Browne is doing his game so well that many of his fights don’t even get to the ground. That is also a consequence of his good takedown defense. He has a good elbow strike, but I remind fans I also have two elbows. If he hesitates I can throw one as well. But I’m calm; I’ll have 25 minutes to take him down, and I know we’re gonna hit the canvas.

With the event being in Orlando, you expect a lot of incentive from Brazilians from there, right?

I hope so; I hope there’s a noisy crowd there. If they chant, “Uh, vai cavalo!” [“Go, racehorse!” perhaps] then I’m gonna get emotional. I hope for a big number of supporters, also from Brazil through the TV. The last few times I went to Brazil I saw the people have been rooting for me more, respecting me for my recent wins. I ask them to really do it, because the positive energy from the people travels all the way to the octagon, and I’m leaving there with another victory to get me closer to the heavyweight belt.

The World MMA Awards, widely regarded as being the Oscars of MMA, was held Friday night in Las Vegas. On the occasion, Jon Jones and Ronda Rousey received trophies for being elected the best fighters of the year.

“Best Coach” honors went to the Brazilian Rafael Cordeiro for the work he has been doing at his Los Angeles academy Kings MMA, beating head coach of Team Nova União Dedé Pederneiras, who was also in the running.

The prize for “Best Submission” went to Frank Mir for his arm-splitting keylock on Rodrigo Minotauro in December 2011.

Brazil’s Edson Barboza was credited with having performed the “Best Knockout,” for the spinning kick that put Terry Etim’s lights out while still on his feet at UFC Rio 2. Cesar Gracie’s academy was honored with the prize for best MMA Gym of the Year.

“Revelation of the Year” honors went to UFC middleweight Chris Weidman, who edged out Renan Barão.

O World MMA Awards, considerado o Oscar do MMA e organizado pela revista “Fighters Only”, foi realizado ontem, em Las Vegas, Nevada. A festa consagrou os astros americanos Jon Jones e Ronda Rousey, eleitos pela revista como os melhores atletas do ano.

Já o treinador foi brasileiro: o curitibano Rafael Cordeiro, radicado em Los Angeles, foi premiado pelo trabalho que faz na academia Kings MMA, em Los Angeles. Ele superou o carioca Dedé Pederneiras (Nova União), que também concorria.

A melhor finalização desceu amarga para os fãs brasileiros: Frank Mir ficou com o prêmio, pela americana que partiu o braço de Rodrigo Minotauro, em dezembro de 2011.

O melhor nocaute ficou com Edson Barboza, pelo chute giratório que apagou Terry Etim ainda em pé, no UFC Rio 2. Já Cesar Gracie venceu na categoria melhor academia de MMA do ano.

A revelação do ano ficou para o peso médio do UFC, Chris Weidman, que bateu Renan Barão, que também sonhava com a premiação.

A segunda edição do reality “TUF Brasil” está cada mais próxima. Dois grandes nomes do MMA se enfrentam com suas equipes: os pesos pesados Rodrigo Minotauro e Fabricio Werdum.

Treinador de Werdum, Rafael Cordeiro falou com Erik Fontanez, do GRACIEMAG.com, sobre o programa e os treinos, na academia Kings MMA, na Califórnia.

GRACIEMAG: Como foi receber a notícia que estaria no TUF Brasil 2?

RAFAEL CORDEIRO: Estou feliz, e muito motivado. Fizemos o primeiro show, no time do  Wanderlei, e agora estar lá de novo com Fabricio Werdum é muito bom. Ele fará uma grande luta com o Minotauro. No Brasil todos conhecem o MMA após a primeira edição do TUF e estamos num grande momento do esporte. Estou muito feliz de participar do TUF Brasil 2.

Como está a preparação para a luta de Werdum contra Minotauro?

O Werdum nunca para de treinar, e tem trabalhado duro todos os dias, e está no melhor momento de sua carreira. Werdum não treina apenas comigo, mas com outros grandes atletas e preparadores do ramo, como Mark Muñoz, Babalu e Wanderlei Silva… Será um grande time de treinadores no “TUF”, e ele está motivado, pois aguardava por esta revanche há muito tempo. Ele respeita muito o Minotauro, que também é meu amigo, pois já treinei na academia Black House, aqui nos EUA. É diferente quando os treinadores têm respeito pelos outros, diferente de quando o “TUF” foi entre as equipes de Vitor e Wanderlei. Se tiver algum estranhamento, será entre lutadores, não entre as equipes. O clima será bom, acredito.

Vocês acham que se Werdum vencer ele pode disputar o cinturão a seguir?

Se ele ganhar, a chance é grande de lutar pelo cinturão. Todos sabem o que o Minotauro representa no UFC e no MMA em geral. Será um salto na carreira vencer ele, não só no pessoal, mas para chegar mais próximo do título.

Werdum e Minotauro se enfrentaram uma vez, no Pride, e Rodrigo venceu por decisão unânime. O que vai sair diferente desta vez?

Será uma guerra, pois sabemos que o Minotauro é um guerreiro. Mas o Fabricio vai estar pronto para lutar em pé ou no solo, e bem treinado no wrestling, muay thai. Ele está mais afiado, e isso é que vai fazer a diferença para a primeira luta. Agora, se a luta for para o solo, será como uma disputa de campeões mundiais, de dois mestres. Tudo pode acontecer, mas estamos treinando muito para trazer a vitória, que será de Werdum e de toda nossa equipe também. Para os fãs que gostam de Jiu-Jitsu será uma luta e tanto.

Yet another Brazilian black belt has been showing the transition from Jiu-Jitsu to MMA can be a victorious one.

World runner-up in 2009 and 2010, Ricardo “Demente” Abreu traveled to California, for Fight Club: Rising Stars 2, coming up Friday, Dec. 7, to take on Team Quest’s Wes Swofford in the third fight of the evening.

Demente, who trains under UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz and former Chute Boxe coach Rafael Cordeiro, remains unbeaten in his three-fight MMA career, winning all of them in the first round.

Ricardo commented on his return and revealed some family news that provided him some extra motivation:

“I’m dying to fight. I had a good recovery from the injury that kept me out of BRFC 3 last August, and I’m ready to get back to winning. I want to take another victory home with me to Brazil, to my city to dedicate to my son, who’s about to be born,” said the competitor.

The event Fight Club: Rising Stars 2, featuring “Big John” McCarthy as referee, will go down this Friday in Fountain Valley, Calif.

Mais um faixa-preta brasileiro tem mostrado como pode ser vitoriosa a transição do Jiu-Jitsu para o MMA.

Vice-campeão mundial em 2009  e 2010, Ricardo Abreu, o Demente, viajou para a Califórnia, nos Estados Unidos, para participar nesta sexta-feira, dia 7, do evento Fight Club: Rising Stars 2, no qual enfrenta Wes Swofford (Team Quest) na terceira luta da noite.

Demente, que é treinado pelo integrante do hall da fama do UFC, Tito Ortiz, e pelo ex-Chute Boxe Rafael Cordeiro, segue invicto com uma sequência de três vitórias no MMA, sendo todas no primeiro round.

Ricardo comentou seu retorno, e revelou uma novidade familiar que lhe trouxe motivação especial.

“Estou com fome de luta. Recuperei-me bem de uma lesão que me tirou do BRFC 3 em agosto e estou pronto para voltar a vencer. Quero levar mais uma vitória para o Brasil, minha cidade e dedicar ao meu filho que vai nascer em breve”, disse o competidor.

O evento Fight Club – Rising Stars 2, , que conta com “Big” John McCarthy como árbitro das lutas, será nesta sexta-feira em Fountain Valley, Califórnia.

Após uma luta divertida e convincente contra Mark Bocek no UFC 154, a parte empolgada da mídia especializada brasileira já começou a ver Rafael dos Anjos como um rival em potencial do campeão Ben Henderson, o atual dono do cinto dos leves.

Rafael não liga para esses confetes. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu de Roberto Gordo sabe que tem carências e alguns degraus a subir. E o melhor: não está com pressa.

Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu ou a porrada em pé? Onde você curtiu mais a luta com Bocek, no último sábado, em Montreal?

Achei a luta muito boa em todos os sentidos. Consegui impor minha estratégia e anular o jogo sempre perigoso do Mark, um lutador completo também. Sobre minha parte em pé, eu sempre quero melhorar nas áreas em que sou mais fraco, por isso treinei com Rafael Cordeiro na Kings MMA, e também na Black House e na Evolve MMA, em Cingapura. Todos os treinos têm sido benéficos para mim. Antes do UFC 154 fiquei duas semanas em Cingapura trocando com aquelas feras do muay thai de lá, e isso me ajudou bastante.

Qual a diferença dos treinos de muay thai na Cingapura e os treinos do Rafa na Kings MMA, na Califa?

Com o Rafael o treino sempre é de um muay thai voltado para o MMA, com os golpes combinados. Fazemos a trocação e a parte de queda e chão também. Já em Cingapura é o muay thai puro.

A quantos degraus você se vê do campeão Ben Henderson?

Não sei a quantos degraus estou dele hoje, mas estou seguindo firme na minha caminhada.
 Sei apenas que nossos estilos são um pouco diferentes, as origins também. Ele vem do taekwondo e do wrestling e eu do Jiu-Jitsu.

Dana White disse que pretende fazer 12 eventos no Brasil ano que vem. Você esperar lutar no Brasil em 2013?

Seria uma boa, faz tempo que nao luto com a torcida a favor! (Risos)

E quem você enfrenta agora? O Gleison Tibau é um nome forte, que te venceu. Gostaria de uma revanche?

Tenho vontade sim, mas essa categoria é muito cheia, então acho que não é muito provável.
