O peso-pena Isaque Paiva foi uma das revelações do Jiu-Jitsu internacional em 2012. Campeão da Seletiva de Gramado, o popular Boia tem um dos melhores triângulos do cenário competitivo e vai tentar colocá-lo em ação no Campeonato Europeu, que começou hoje em Lisboa.

“É a primeira vez que tenho oportunidade de viajar para lutar o Europeu, e quero dar meu máximo para representar minha equipe e homenagear meu grande mestre Masaaki Sinkai, que faleceu esta semana. Ele é pai dos meus professores Massao e Daniel Sinkai, responsáveis por tudo que eu sou e conquistei até hoje”, disse Isaque, em papo com o GRACIEMAG.com.

O faixa-preta, natural de Penápolis, São Paulo, sabe que só vai pegar carne-de-pescoço. “Acredito que todas as lutas serão difíceis. Para mim é uma novidade poder lutar com o (Rubens) Cobrinha, que é muito experiente, e com o (Augusto) Tanquinho, que vem no pena. Não estou estudando um adversário específico, estou concentrado em vencer uma luta de cada vez”, comentou Isaque, um dos mais de cem faixas-pretas que vão lutar em Lisboa a partir de sábado.

“O plano na temporada é o ouro mundial. Sei que na minha categoria o bicho pega para valer e a cada ano todo mundo vem se preparando cada vez, mas é por isso que procuro estar cada vez mais completo e não cometer erros”, explica ele. “Estou buscando ser mais estratégico e o fato de poder lutar em competições grandes tem me ajudado a achar meus erros e a melhorar cada dia mais”, concluiu.

Featherweight black belt Isaque Paiva was one of the Jiu-Jitsu revelations of 2012. The winner of the Gramado leg of the WPJJC Trials, he has one of the slickest triangles in the competition scene and will be aiming to sink it this weekend in Lisbon, Portugal, when he takes to the mats at the European Open, which kicked off today.

“It’s the first time I get to compete in Europe, and I want to give my all to represent my team and pay tribute to my grandmaster Masaaki Sinkai, who passed away this week. He’s the father of my teachers Massao and Daniel Sinkai, who are responsible for everything I’ve accomplished so far,” Isaque told GRACIEMAG.com.

The black belt born in Penápolis, São Paulo State, knows he’s going to have his work cut out for him. “I figure all the matches will be tough. To me, being able to face [Rubens] Cobrinha and [Augusto] Tanquinho will be new. I’m not studying one specific opponent. I’m concentrating on winning one match at a time,” said Isaque, one of over a hundred black belts who will compete in Lisbon starting Saturday.

“My plan this season is to win gold at the Worlds. I know my weight class is really deep and everyone is working harder and harder to win it, but that’s why I’m working on being more and more complete and not making mistakes,” he explained. “I’m aiming to be more strategic, and the fact that I’ve been getting to compete at the big tournaments has helped me a lot in identifying my mistakes and getting better and better every day.”

Life has never been easy for Isaque, Paiva, the winner of the under-64 kg division at the Gramado leg of the WPJJ tryouts.

After beating Ary Farias by referee decision, he went on to tap out Bruno Frazatto, who declared him the winner even after Isaque was disqualified (get the background story here). Now Paiva runs the risk of having his trip to Abu Dhabi nixed because of his passport, which has been at the American consulate for some time now and needs to reach the organizers of the event in Abu Dhabi soon.

But even with this holdup, the Saikoo team whiz remains confident and smiling. Back in his town of Penápolis, São Paulo State, the fighter spoke with GRACIEMAG.com.

Did you forget the rule penalizing any competitor who runs to join the crowd in the stands after winning?

Honestly, I wasn’t aware of the rule… Everyone who was there and watched the fight saw what happened; there was nothing ill meaning about it at all. I’ve been struggling for some time to make it here, to compete against the best, and I have no reason to, after winning the match, go thumb my nose at the rules and jeopardize everything. It was just an act of pure joy. I always respected my opponents, but after winning I rushed to hug my friend Guilherme Paradeda, who always supported me there in the South.

PERSISTENCE AND PERFECT STATURE FOR TRIANGLE

What did you learn from the Gramado campaign?

I learned that it’s worth doing a good job of preparing. I always kept a straight line, and now I fulfilled a dream. I also learned to pay attention to the new rules and to curb my celebrations. Let me reiterate: what happened was unintentional; I respect Bruno Frazatto and his whole team—I’ve been around them at other championships before… I just didn’t control my happiness for having won, it was never my intention to cause this whole situation. I’m sorry about it, and I now I just want to keep training, since the championship isn’t over yet.

You subbed Frazatto with a triangle with no arm on the inside. What’s different about the way you do the triangle?

It’s the position I practice most, as it’s the one I have the easiest time doing, due to my physical stature. In fact, it’s a great move for anyone with long legs. What I do to work on my triangle is just train a lot, persist in polishing it up and trying to apply the perfect move.

A vida nunca foi fácil para o campeão da categoria até 64kg da Seletiva WPJJ de Gramado, Isaque Paiva.

Após superar Ary Farias na decisão do juiz, finalizar Bruno Frazatto e ser nomeado vencedor após ser punido e desclassificado (entenda aqui), o popular “Boia” agora enfrenta o risco de ser cortado da viagem a Abu Dhabi por conta do seu passaporte, que está há um bom tempo no consulado americano, e precisa chegar às mãos dos organizadores nos Emirados em breve.

Mas, mesmo com mais essa dificuldade, o boa-praça da equipe Saikoo segue confiante, e sorridente. De volta a Penápolis, no interior de São Paulo, o lutador conversou com o GRACIEMAG.com.

Você esqueceu ou nem sabia da regra que pune quem corre para a galera?

Sinceramente, eu não sabia da regra… Todos que estavam presentes e viram a luta viram o que ocorreu, foi sem nenhuma má intenção. Venho lutando há muito tempo para chegar aqui, para lutar contra os melhores, e eu não tinha motivo para, após ter vencido a luta, desrespeitar a regra e colocar tudo a perder. Foi somente um ato de pura felicidade, sempre respeitei todos meus adversários, mas após vencer corri para abraçar meu amigo Guilherme Paradeda, que sempre me apoia lá no Sul.

Persistência e porte perfeito para o triângulo

As vitórias eram esperadas?

Foi a realização de um sonho. A vitória e a vaga em Abu Dhabi na verdade foi fruto de muito treino, de uma preparação técnica forte que tenho feito para conseguir a classificação e acompanhar o nível do evento. Todas as minhas lutas foram com ótimos atletas, estou muito satisfeito com o resultado.

O que você aprendeu com sua campanha em Gramado?

Aprendi que vale a pena se preparar bastante. Eu sempre tive os pés no chão, e agora realizei um sonho. Aprendi também a prestar atenção nas novas regras e a controlar melhor ao comemorar. Volto a dizer, o ocorrido não foi proposital, respeito o atleta Bruno Frazatto e toda a equipe, já estive com eles em outros campeonatos… Só que não me controlei com a felicidade de ter ganho, e quis comemorar com um amigo que já vem me ajudando há muito tempo, não foi minha intenção gerar essa situação. Peço desculpas, e continuo buscando somente treinar, pois o campeonato ainda não acabou!

Você finalizou o Frazatto no triângulo sem o braço por dentro. O que você faz diferente no triângulo?

É a posição que eu mais treino, pois é o golpe que tenho facilidade de aplicar devido ao meu porte físico. É um ótimo golpe para todos os atletas que tenham pernas longas, aliás. O que faço para apurar meu triângulo é muito treino, persistência para lapidar o ajuste e tentar sempre aplicar o golpe perfeito.
