A purple belt passionate about Jiu-Jitsu, Pavel Bure is a student of the Valente brothers’ in Miami, as well as a hockey ace on the ice. This Monday, the talented right winger joined the Hockey Hall of Fame. “I feel it’s the greatest achievement you can have in hockey,” said Bure. “The selection committee evaluates everything you’ve done in world hockey. That’s why it’s such a great honor to me,” added the Russian, who stopped playing prematurely, due to knee problems.

No injury could keep him from falling in love with Jiu-Jitsu, though.

Nicknamed “The Russian Rocket” for his speed, Bure played for 12 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), where he served on the teams Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and New York Rangers. Bure was the NHL’s top scorer in 1999 and has scored 437 goals in 702 games, with 342 assists and 779 career points.

Bure also holds a Jiu-Jitsu medal that is dear to him: bronze at the Helio Gracie Challenge, in 2010.

Faixa-roxa e apaixonado pelo Jiu-Jitsu, Pavel Bure é aluno do irmãos Valente em Miami, além de uma fera do hóquei no gelo. Nessa segunda-feira, o talentoso artilheiro foi incluído no Hall da Fama do esporte. “Eu acho que é a maior realização que você pode obter no hóquei”, disse Bure. “O comitê de seleção avalia tudo que você fez para o hóquei mundial, por isso para mim é uma grande honra”, completou o russo, que parou de jogar cedo demais, por problemas no joelho.

Nenhuma lesão o impediu de se apaixonar pelo Jiu-Jitsu.

Apelidado de “Foguete Russo”, o veloz e rompedor Bure jogou por 12 temporadas na National Hockey League (NHL), onde atuou pelos times do Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers e New York Rangers. Quem não ligasse o shape à pessoa, mal poderia perceber que se tratava de um ex-campeão do UFC 6, ou ainda mais sinistro, um companheiro de filmagens de Robert DeNiro.

Tratava-se do ex-lutador e ator Oleg Taktarov, o “Urso Russo” (17v, 5d), que chegou à academia pelas mãos do amigo Pavel Bure, fera do hóquei e faixa-roxa dedicado à arte suave.

This month’s issue of GRACIEMAG, in bookstores across the US, shows Jiu-Jitsu from a somewhat different angle: the gentle art as an agent for change, whether in the USA, Western Europe or even the mysterious land of Russia.

In a special report, Luca Atalla mixes with the Russian people and attests to how Jiu-Jitsu captures the hearts and minds of people of cultures that are different but not so unlike our own, when it comes to food, music and leisure.

It’s something that’s been going on with Russians in all corners of the planet, as the magazine reveals.

A recent example unfolded at the Valente brothers’ Miami academy. Sporting a white gi and belt, a Russian heavyweight taught a lesson in humility. Anyone who didn’t link the countenance to the person wouldn’t be able to tell that they had the champion of UFC 6 in their midst – or the actor who starred alongside Robert DeNiro in the movies, at that.

The fighter was Oleg Taktarov (17w, 5l), who was taken to the academy by Pavel Bure, an ice hockey star and Jiu-Jitsu purple belt.
