Mesmo sem luta marcada, os irmãos mais polêmicos do Ultimate sempre dão um jeito de agitar as massas, e a confusão desta vez, que não tinha nada a ver com eles, rendeu uma suspensão a Nate Diaz. O mais novo dos Diaz disparou mensagens consideradas homofóbicas ao atleta Bryan Caraway, mesmo que não tenham sido nominalmente enviadas a ele, e a direção do UFC decidiu suspender o encrenqueiro.

Tudo começou quando Pat Healy, pego no antidoping por  uso de maconha, teve sua luta redefinida como no contest. Além do resultado alterado, Healy, que havia recebido o bônus de finalização da noite, perdeu a bolada, e a direção do UFC repassou a quantia de 65 mil dólares para Bryan Caraway.

Caraway, que finalizou Johnny Bedford na guilhotina, no terceiro assalto,  foi o único, além de Healy, a finalizar na noite do UFC 159, e consequentemente o único capaz de herdar a quantia. Além disso, foi a pedido de Caraway que Dana White havia aumentado o valor do bônus, geralmente de 50 mil dólares, para 65 mil. Não ganhou de primeira mais ganhou na segunda. Daí que entra Nate Diaz na história.

Revoltado com o fato, Nate disparou em sua conta no Twitter que sentia por Healy perder o dinheiro, e que a pessoa que aceitou o dinheiro de Pat era… bem… leia:

“Eu me sinto mal por Pat Healy, porque eles tiraram o dinheiro de um cara inocente, e acho que o cara que recebeu o dinheiro é o maior veado do mundo” , disse Nate Diaz, que completou no segundo post com mais ofensas.

A declaração repercutiu amplamente nas redes sociais, e a direção do UFC emitiu uma nota oficial dizendo que o atleta Nate Diaz estaria suspenso por tempo indeterminado  até que houvesse uma investigação interna do caso.

UFC 159 was an odd night for MMA fans. Held on April 27 in Newark, N.J., the UFC had Jon Jones defend his title against Chael Sonnen, a fight that nearly crowned Sonnen as the new light heavyweight champion because Jones broke his toe before finished him in the first round.

The night also featured a controversial decision-win for Michel Bisping over Alan Belcher. Bisping, after poking Belcher in the eye, was deemed the winner through a majority technical decision.

Also on the main card, Roy Nelson showed he’s got some legitimate power in that overhand right, knocking out Cheick Kongo in the first round of their heavyweight affair.

Opening the main card, Pat Healy made a great impact with a submission of Jim Miller, earning the Submission of the Night bonus, as well as Fight of the Night honors.

The night’s undercard featured a dominant performance by Sara McMann making her debut in the UFC, only the third ever women’s bout to take place in the Octagon.

UFC 159, which was held on Saturday, April 27, marked the reign of Jon Jones in the light heavyweight division of the UFC, but just barely. 

Chael Sonnen laid below the champ with and ate sharp elbows, but almost got out of the octagon as the new owner of the belt, as Jones, during a struggle in the fight, broke his left big toe. With certainty, Octagon-side doctors wouldn’t allow him to come out for the second round, but luckily for him, he finished it before having to deal with that.

The event, held in Newark, N.J., also had Michael Bisping beating Alan Belcher, a fight that finished with a technical decision stemming from an eye injury to the Belcher’s eye.

Additionally, Roy Nelson picked up a first-round knockout over Cheick Kongo.

Jones shows superiority but almost loses the UFC belt

The most anticipated fight of the night was between champion Jon Jones against renowned talker Chael Sonnen, for the UFC light heavyweight title. Beyond all the talk, Sonnen and Jones closed out their coaching of teams on “The Ultimate Fighter 17.”

At UFC 159, Sonnen came to the Octagon with a boxing robe. Jones entered quietly, the sound of Bob Marley playing in the arena speakers, and the certainty that he would enter the cage, do his job, and go back home. 

Sonnen started with a low kick to open up the fight, but Jones was the first to take it to the ground. Sonnen then rose, but was pressured by Jones in the cage, and this allowed him to land strong knees before dropping again and striking with elbows. Sonnen even attempted a guillotine, but the champion turned Sonnen aside, pressed against the fence, and began the punishment from top position. This signaled the referee to put a stop to the action, giving the victory to Jones at 4:33 of the first round.

However, shortly after receiving the belt, Jones realized he had broken his left big toe, which was completely turned to the side. The question is: If Chael Sonnen survives to the second stage, Jones would not be back for round with the broken finger, and Chael Sonnen would be declared champion heavyweight. Incredible, no?

Neste sábado, 27 de abril, Jon Jones e Chael Sonnen finalmente se encontram dentro do octógono. Depois de trocarem ofensas e provocações, os treinadores do “TUF 17” medirão forças para saber quem fica com o cinturão dos meio-pesados do UFC.

Como sempre, o falastrão Chael Sonnen conseguiu chamar a atenção da mídia e dos fãs para este duelo, e garantiu que é um lutador superior no chão, arma que ele pretende usar contra o campeão. Capaz de vencer o combate ou não, Sonnen vem comprovando que é ímpar na arte de vender uma luta.

No coevento principal, Alan Belcher encara Michael Bisping pela categoria dos médios do Ultimate. Os dois trocaram muitas farpas nas últimas semanas, e chegaram a apostar um carro caso o inglês consiga nocautear o americano. Ambos lutadores vem de derrota, e estão motivados para subir no ranking da organização em busca de uma disputa de título. Bisping é o quarto colocado, enquanto Belcher está na décima posição.

O gordinho boa-praça do Ultimate, Roy Nelson, também está no card principal do UFC 159. Vindo de duas vitórias seguidas, ele enfrenta o francês Cheick Kongo, que não tem feito grandes apresentações, apesar da vitória por pontos para Shawn Jordan no UFC 149.

Representando o Brasil em Newark, Vinny Magalhães realiza o desejo de lutar contra o respeitado americano Phil Davis. Há tempos os meio-pesados travaram uma guerra pelo Twitter buscando provar qual deles é o melhor no MMA, e quem seria capaz de encerrar o combate mais rápido. Os lutadores prometem uma das encaradas mais tensas na pesagem desta sexta-feira, afinal, foram meses de espera para o duelo.

O americano Pat Healy finalmente estreia no UFC após uma sequência frenética de seis vitórias no Strikeforce. O peso leve será recebido na organização pela prata da casa Jim Miller. Para este combate pode se esperar um jogo de chão muito afiado entre os lutadores, já que são dois finalizadores.

A terceira luta feminina dos pesos-galos do UFC também será realizada neste evento. Sara McMann é ex-campeã de luta olímpica e está invicta com seis vitórias em seu cartel. Sheila Gaff, alemã de 23 anos, já realizou 15 combates em sua carreira e venceu a semifinal do torneio dos pesos-moscas do Cage Warriors em seu último desafio.

Strikeforce’s doors came to a close for the final time with Tarec Saffiedine defeating Nate Marquardt for the company’s welterweight title Saturday night in Oklahoma City.

Saffiedine brutalized Marquardt’s lead leg for the majority of the five-round affair, earning the unanimous decision with scores of 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46.

“I’ve been training so hard for so long. It’s unbelievable,” said the newly-crowned champion following his win. “I can’t believe I’m wearing the belt right now.”

Both fighters started out the fight conservatively, measuring each other on the feet. There weren’t many significant strikes from either fighter until Saffiedine began landing leg kicks on the way to winning the opening frame.

Marquardt picked up the offense in the second round, taking his opponent down once in the frame. Saffiedine continued to land leg kicks, but Marquardt controlled the pace for the greater part of the round.

Saffiedine’s confidence grew as the fight went on, pressing the action and landing more leg kicks as the third round was underway. The Belgian fighter clinched with his opponent on several occasions, applying numerous punches and knees from that position.

Marquardt began to show fatigue in the fourth round, and Saffiedine solidified the win with a takedown in the fifth on the way to the unanimous decision.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, who started the promotion in 1985 as a kickboxing organization, shared his thoughts on Saturday’s fights being the company’s last. The Zuffa-owned organization will shut down, which, according to the executive, is a tough pill to swallow.

“It’s a tough thing, but I’m so happy for these guys who fought tonight,” Coker said following the final Strikeforce card. “It’s time.”

Coker added that he’ll forever be in debt to Showtime, Strikeforce’s broadcast partner, for taking a chance on what was once a regional promotion, putting them on the national stage through the premium cable channel.

With the win, Saffiedine will likely be headed to the UFC. Marquardt, who was once in the UFC, will also make his transition back to the world’s leading MMA promotion.

Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring

In what was a lopsided victory, Daniel Cormier toppled Dion Staring by technical knockout in the second round of their co-main event on Saturday.

Cormier shut his opponent out, getting the stoppage at 4:02 of the round. Cormier earned the dominant win, but it was the announcement of his plans going forward that got the most attention, calling out Frank Mir and Jon Jones for his first two fights in the UFC.

“Right now, April 20 on FOX … Frank Mir, let’s do it,” he said in his post-fight interview. “I’m going to let Jon [Jones] defend his belt on April 27 and kick his ass in the Fall.”

Cormier also said during his post-fight speech that he signed his UFC contract. Originally, Mir and Cormier were supposed to fight in a November Strikeforce card, but the former UFC heavyweight champion was injured, leaving Cormier with no opponent. The fight’s cancelation prompted the scrubbing of the entire card — the second Strikeforce event cancelation in as many months.

No announcements were made confirming Cormier’s debut UFC fight.

Josh Barnett vs. Nandor Guelmino 

Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett made quick work of Nandor Guelmino, submitting his opponent in the first round of their Strikeforce fight.

Barnett took Guelmino down, secured full mount and locked on the arm triangle to finish the fight at 2:11 of the opening round.

In the middle of a pro wrestling-like speech in his post fight interview, Barnett said he doesn’t know if he’ll be a part of the UFC after the last Strikeforce card.

“No idea where I’m going to end up,” Barnett said.

It’s unclear if the UFC is willing to negotiate a contract with Barnett, as UFC president Dana White recently said, much like Barnett, that he has no idea if the heavyweight will come back to the Las Vegas-based organization.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle 

Gegard Mousasi submitted Mike Kyle in the first round of their main card fight at Strikeforce’s final event.

The Dutch-Armenian fighter applied a successful takedown, locking on a rear-naked choke at 4:09 of the opening frame. Mousasi credited a rediscovered focus for his win on Saturday night.

“I got more professional,” he said in his post-fight interview, adding that he got out of his comfort zone to produce the win.

Mousasi is likely to move over to the UFC, where, as we reported on GRACIEMAG.com, he’d like to face light heavyweight contenders like Alexander Gustafsson, Lyoto Machida and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Ed Herman 

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza beat Ed Herman in the first round of Strikeforce’s opening fight on the main card.

Jacare put his Jiu-Jitsu to use, putting Herman on his back before mounting the UFC veteran and slapping on the kimura. Herman was forced to tap out at 3:10 of the opening round.

After injuries forced his two previously scheduled opponents out of the Jan. 12 event, Pat Healy will face Kurt Holobaugh at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine, company officials told GRACIEMAG.com on Wednesday.

Both fighters have agreed to the match-up, and bout agreements will be signed soon.

Healy (28-16) was first preparing to fight Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez for the title at the event, but a lingering shoulder injury forced Melendez off the card.

“Bam Bam” was then tapped to face Jorge Masvidal, but he too bowed out of the fight due to injury.

Holobaugh (7-0) is a Gracie Barra submission specialist, and most recently fought in June at a regional event in Biloxi, MIss., where he defeated his opponent by rear-naked choke in the second round. The win was the sixth of his career by submission.

The upcoming Strikeforce card will be its final one, and Zuffa, the parent company of Strikeforce and the UFC, will shut down operations of the promotion thereafter. The evening is headlined by Nate Marquardt defending his welterweight title against No.1 contender Tarec Saffiedine.

Com cinco vitórias e uma derrota no MMA, o Gracie radicado na Inglaterra chega ao Rio de Janeiro por volta do dia 4 de dezembro, semana que vem, para treinos de fazer o amante de Jiu-Jitsu salivar.

“O Joinha conversou com o Rodrigo Minotauro e achamos uma boa ideia treinar por lá, no Team Nogueira, no Rio de Janeiro”, disse o finalizador. “Eu ia ao Brasil de qualquer modo para passar férias, então não foi uma mudança tão grande de planos”.

Quem também está dentro do card galáctico do Strikeforce é o ex-campeão do evento Ronaldo Jacaré. O bicampeão mundial absoluto de Jiu-Jitsu substituiu o campeão dos médios, Luke Rockhold, lesionado. Jaca luta contra o invicto Lorenz Larkin, 13 lutas e 13 vitórias.

The greatest Jiu-Jitsu World Championship medal collector, Roger Gracie (5-1), is confirmed for the final Strikeforce event, which takes place Jan. 12 in Oklahoma City, Okla., USA. The Carlos Gracie Jr. black belt will take on American Anthony Smith (17-7) in a middleweight match-up.

Gracie will fly to Rio de Janeiro from his home of England next week for some training that will make jiu-jitsu lovers’ mouths water.

“Joinha spoke to Rodrigo Minotauro, and we felt it would be a good idea if I went to train there, at Team Nogueira in Rio de Janeiro,” said the tapout artist. “I was going to Brazil for the Holidays anyways, so it wasn’t too big a change of plans.”

Former Strikeforce champion middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza is also on the Jan. 12 card. The two-time absolute world champion of jiu-jitsu enters in the place of injured middleweight champion Luke Rockhold. Souza will take on Lorenz Larkin, who is undefeated in his 13-fight career.

Masvidal, who hasn’t fought since July, was last seen defeating Justin Wilcox at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy. The fight put him back in the win circle after dropping his bid for the Strikeforce lightweight title to the champion, Melendez, in December 2011.

Healy recently said that he’d prefer waiting for Melendez to heal from his injury so that the two can fight for the title. However, he also admitted that if a fight was offered to him, he’d have a hard time turning it down.

With the recent news that Strikeforce is planning on closing its doors after the January show, it’s unlikely that Healy would have the opportunity to wait for a Strikeforce fight with Melendez.

Enter Masvidal.

This is the second time Melendez had to bow out of a fight with Healy due to injury. The two were schedule to fight on the Sept. 29 Strikeforce card in Sacramento, Calif., but Melendez was hurt and the show was ultimately canceled.

Strikeforce has yet to make an official announcement regarding the fight, and MMAjunkie.com was first to report it.

If you’re a Strikeforce fan, you’d better make the most of the next show. According to sources close to the event that launched the likes of Ronda Rousey, Antonio Pezão and Ronaldo Jacaré, it’s set to close its doors after the January 12 show in Oklahoma, USA.

What we can expect now, if no twists or turns in the story arise, is an exit for the ages, as that’s just what the card in the works looks sure to provide. The reigning lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, will take on Pat Healy in the main event, and besides retiring the promotional belt to his mantel, the winner will surely join the UFC’s ranks carrying some major clout.

And three more champions are tipped to defend their crowns at the farewell event. Middleweight kingpin Luke Rockhold takes on Lorenz Larkin, while Nate Marquardt defends his welterweight belt against Tarec Saffiedine, and the promotion’s number 1 heavyweight, Daniel Cormier, locks horns with Dion Staring, with UFC fans watching attentively.
