At Team Renzo Gracie Ottawa our focus is maintaining the highest level of instruction in BJJ. BJJ is known as the most effective martial art in the world, although it is relatively new by martial arts standards. Today, in any reality-fighting tournament 99% of the competitors will have a certain level of knowledge in BJJ. Why? Because it’s been proven time and time again to work. We train with a partner almost all the time. In doing so, you quickly learn what works and what does not against an opponent who is resisting. We emphasize technique and position. Proper technique and good position will dictate the outcome of a fight whether in competition or on the street. BJJ is easy and fun to learn, but takes hard work, discipline and dedication to master.

Our students have the opportunity to train at any of our numerous BJJ seminars, which we conduct. We have world-class champions visit Ottawa on an almost monthly basis. Also, the academy frequently organizes trips to New York City, which makes our club unique. All our students have the occasion to train at the NYC academy with Renzo Gracie and his instructors when we travel to Manhattan.

Our classes (schedule) will generally comprise of a brief warm-up, guard-passing drills, positional drills, technique and training. The two Brazillian jiu-jitsu programs we offer, Blue Belt and Purple belt, are designed to help you achieve the colour of belt indicated. Our live practice classes, randori, are limited to those with a minimum 1-month of experience as to maximize the quality and safety for all involved.

We now have women-only classes (schedule) for ladies who want to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and self-defence in a fun, safe, female-student only setting.

GRACIEMAG: Você vem de uma semana de treinos com GSP no Canadá, para o UFC 154. Como foi lá?

BRÁULIO ESTIMA: Os treinos foram bem interessantes. Nada muito diferente do que ele sempre fez, em termos de rotina. Até porque, não tem como o GSP treinar mais do que ele treinava! É aquilo, ele sempre foi um atleta nato. A única diferença agora acho que foi na qualidade dos treinos. Ele importou um time muito forte para fazer parte de seu camp. Trouxe sparrings com o estilo do (Carlos) Condit, trouxe outra equipe direto da Tailândia para a parte de muay thai, me trouxe da Inglaterra, e vários outros atletas para ajudar no treinamento. O camp estava completo, não se esquecendo de todos os outros que estão lá. O Firas (Zahabi) é um excelente treinador.

Na sua opinião, como será essa disputa entre GSP e Carlos Condit, na luta principal de sábado?

Acredito que o GSP vai derrubar o Condit para fazer um ground and pound. E, quando aparecer o momento certo, vai acabar com a luta. Mas veja bem, eu acredito que a luta vá ser longa. Condit é muito duro e estratégico também. Mesmo assim, acredito que o GSP vai levar mais essa.

O que você achou do  Jiu-Jitsu do GSP?

O Jiu-Jitsu do GSP está muito bom, ele sempre treina os diversos aspectos da arte com o Bruno Fernandes (GB Montreal) e o John Danaher (Renzo Gracie NY). Toda semana tem uma equipe do Renzo Gracie chegando para participar dos treinos. Foi visível a evolução dele durante as semanas.

O GSP está voltando de contusão nos dois joelhos…

Olha, não vi diferença alguma. E não vi ele poupar, ou reclamar do joelho hora nenhuma.

Que lições você tirou do wrestling dele, dessa vez?

O wrestling dele sempre será um aspecto muito forte no jogo dele. É quase impossível parar uma queda dele. Ele tem um domínio impressionante das técnicas, o que não surpreende depois que você vê a quantidade impressionante de repetições que ele faz, e o tempo que dedica ao treino do timing de quedas. Já no chão, acho que ele é um dos poucos atletas do UFC capazes de coordenar quase perfeitamente os socos com o posicionamento de Jiu-Jitsu.

Como foi a parte de MMA? Saíram na mão?

Treinei muito MMA nas partes de chão, pois tinham caras muito melhores do que eu em pé, né. Era uma seleção de atletas específicos de cada área.

E o que mais você aprendeu no Canadá?

Foi uma viagem legal, aprendi muito em vários sentidos e aproveitei bastante para dividir o que sei com os atletas. Foi muito produtivo. Fiz seminários na GB Montreal também, com meu grande amigo Bruno Fernandes, foi muito bom revê-lo. Também fui visitar o faixa-preta Pat Cooligan em Ottawa, foi o bicho essa viagem. Pretendo voltar em breve!

Voltando ao GSP, o que mais você admira nele como lutador?

A dedicação, o foco e a perseverança. Hora de treino é hora de treino, e não tem nada que desvie a atenção dele nessa hora. É um cara que está constantemente em busca de melhorar. Ele escuta muito e é um cara inteligente, que faz uma ligação de tudo que ele treina de una forma única.

GRACIEMAG: You spent a week training with GSP in Canada, helping him get ready for UFC 154. How did that go?

BRÁULIO ESTIMA: Training was quite interesting. Nothing too different from what he always does, in terms of the routine, if just because there’s no way for GSP to train more than he already did, is there. He’s always been a born athlete. The only difference now was in the quality of training. He imported a solid team to take part in his camp. He brought in sparring partners with [Carlos] Condit’s style, brought in a team direct from Thailand to help with his Thai boxing, brought me in from England, as well as a bunch of other athletes to help out with his training. The camp was complete. Firas [Zahabi] is an excellent trainer.

In your opinion, how will this main event between GSP and Carlos Condit go this Saturday?

I believe GSP will take Condit down and ground-and-pound him. And when the right moment arises, he’ll finish the fight. But I do feel it will be a long fight. Condit is really tough and strategic too. Even so, I believe GSP will take this one.

What did you make of GSP’s Jiu-Jitsu?

GSP’s Jiu-Jitsu is really good. He always works on the different aspects of the art with Bruno Fernandes [leader of GB Montreal] and John Danaher [of Renzo Gracie NY]. The whole week there’s a team from Renzo Gracie showing up to train. His evolution was apparent over the weeks.

GSP is coming back from injury to both knees…

You know, I didn’t notice any difference at all. And I didn’t see him hold back or complain about his knee at any time.

What wrestling did you learn from him this time?

His wrestling is always a strong point in his game. It’s almost impossible to stop his takedowns. His technical control is impressive, which is no surprise once you’ve seen how many repetitions he does and the time he puts into working on timing takedowns. Now on the ground, I feel he’s one of the few athletes in the UFC who can almost perfectly coordinate punches with Jiu-Jitsu positioning.

How did the MMA part go? Did you two throw down?

I did a lot of the ground aspect of the MMA training, since there were guys a lot better than me to do the striking. There was a selection of specific athletes for each area.

What else did you learn in Canada?

It was a really cool trip. I learned a lot in every way and did my best to share what I know with the other athletes. It was really productive. I did seminars at GB Montreal as well, with my good friend Bruno Fernandes. It was great to see him again. I also visited the black belt Pat Cooligan in Ottowa. This trip was awesome. I plan to return soon.

Back to GSP, what do you admire most in the fighter?

His dedication, focus and perseverance. Time to train is time to train, and nothing can sway his attention. He’s a guy who’s constantly striving to improve. He listens a lot and is an intelligent guy who strings everything he practices together in a unique way.

A Jiu-Jitsu teacher and promoter of events in Canada is preparing a Gi Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, and he’s going to great lengths to put together a supermatch worth top billing. It’s not just any supermatch, it’s perhaps the most heavily anticipated Jiu-Jitsu matchup of the year. The event is our GMA Pat Cooligan’s Ottawa BJJ, set for October 15.

What the promoters have in mind is to offer a hefty sum, and the winner takes all. As suggested in the title, the idea is to pit three-time absolute world champion Roger Gracie against current absolute world champion Rodolfo Vieira in a ten-minute match under IBJJF rules and three referees presiding over the showdown. The organizers have already contacted Roger, who demonstrated interest but asked to only discuss it further after his September 10 fight at Strikeforce.

So what are your thoughts on this supermatch? Will the two Brazilian titans clash in Canada? Check back with GRACIEMAG.com later for more on the matchup.

Um professor e organizador de eventos canadense está preparando um torneio de kimono na capital Ottawa, no Canadá, e tem se esforçado para programar uma superluta de Jiu-Jitsu. Não qualquer superluta, mas talvez a superluta mais aguardada do Jiu-Jitsu do ano. O evento é o Ottawa BJJ, de nosso GMA Pat Cooligan, marcado para o próximo dia 15 de outubro.

Segundo a ideia inicial dos organizadores, o prêmio é uma bolada das grandes, e o vencedor levaria tudo. A ideia, como o título da nota diz, é uma luta entre o atual campeão mundial absoluto Rodolfo Vieira e o tricampeão absoluto Roger Gracie, com duração de dez minutos e sob as regras da IBJJF, com três juízes. A organização já teria contactado Roger, que se mostrou interessado mas pediu para conversar só depois de sua luta no Strikeforce, dia 10 de setembro.

Mike is a BJJ student at Renzo Gracie Ottawa, owned by GMA black belt Pat Cooligan, in Canada. As usual, after the pain, comes the wish to help and comfort. So, Cooligan and his school decided to give their small but vital contribution to comfort Mike and help Haiti.

On the weekend of January 24th-25th, they are going to host a Trainathon. All the procceds will be donated to the US Red Cross, an organization playing a key role in aiding the victims.  For more info, go to oama.ca.
