Faixa-preta que já mostrou seu valor nos grandes campeonatos da IBJJF, Abmar Barbosa deu um refresco ao corpo para curar as lesões que o assombraram em 2012.

O mais importante, porém, foi o refresco dado para a mente, segundo o lutador.

“Para não ficar com a mente angustiada, pensando nas competições que rolavam e eu não podia participar, me dediquei a pilotar helicópteros. Peguei o brevê e estou amarradão”, contou a fera de Rio Claro, São Paulo, hoje com diversas academias espalhadas pelos EUA.

O Jiu-Jitsu, porém, é mesmo sua paixão principal. Por isso, o faixa-preta de Robert Drysdale já prevê voos mais altos em 2013.

“Meu foco agora é um reality show que estou produzindo. Estou com uma casa preparada e montada, aqui em Northern Virginia, nos EUA. Do dia 15 de janeiro até 15 de dezembro de 2013, vão morar lá cerca de 12 atletas de Jiu-Jitsu que sonham com uma vida profissional na arte suave. Muitos têm talento e vontade, mas falta de oportunidade e dinheiro”, diz o atleta.

“Cada morador terá sua obrigação a cumprir, como treinar Jiu-Jitsu três vezes ao dia, de segunda a sexta. A preparação física será duas vezes na semana, em dia a ser estipulado pelo preparador Bill Easlick. Sábado, fica a critério do atleta, ele pode participar do treino aberto ou não, e domingo é descanso completo. Qualquer atleta na casa só pode quebrar essas regras após o Mundial 2013, antes nem pensar”, diz ele.

A casa deve reunir americanos, brasileiros e australianos de todas as faixas. Por enquanto, devem participar, além de Abmar, as feras Garret Beck, Allan Rezende, Leandro Marchesin, Jake Driscoll e Marcos dos Santos.

A black belt who has showed his worth at the big IBJJF tournaments, Abmar Barbosa gave his body a rest and healed up some injuries that were haunting him in 2012.

The most important part, however, was to rest up his mind, according to the fighter himself.

“To not get anguished by thinking about the competitions going by that I couldn’t be in, I dedicated my time to flying helicopters. I got bit by the flying bug and am loving it, said the Rio Claro, São Paulo native who now has a number of academies spread around the USA.

Jiu-Jitsu is still his primary passion, though. And for that reason, the Robert Drysdale black belt is already working on some loftier goals for 2013.

“My focus now is a reality show that I’m producing. I’ve got a house all set up here in Northern Virginia, USA. From January 15 to December 15, 2013 I’ll be living there with around 12 Jiu-Jitsu athletes who dream of making it as professionals in the gentle art. There are a lot of people with talent and desire but are just missing opportunity and money,” said the athlete.

“Each resident of the house has his obligations to fulfill, like training Jiu-Jitsu three times a day from Monday to Friday. Physical conditioning will be twice a week on days stipulated by conditioning coach Bill Easlick. Saturday is free for the athlete to do as he pleases—he can participate in an open training session or not, as he sees fit. Sunday is for complete rest. The athletes in the house can only break these rules after the 2013 Worlds, and not even think of breaking them before,” he said.

The participants will be from the USA, Brazil and Australia and will be of all belt colors. So far, the athletes confirmed to be there are Abmar, Garret Beck, Allan Rezende, Leandro Marchesin, Jake Driscoll and Marcos dos Santos.

O Pan de Jiu-Jitsu já teve início nesta quinta-feira, em Irvine. O evento vai contar com grandes nomes do Jiu-Jitsu mundial, mas, uma das categorias mais disputadas, o peso médio, sofreu um desfalque de peso. Vice-campeão no Pan 2010, Abmar Barbosa está inscrito, mas não vai mais poder lutar.

“Estou fora e também sou dúvida para o World Pro. Durante os treinos no camp com o Robert Drysdale não suportei a dor que vinha sentindo na virilha”, conta o faixa-preta ao GRACIEMAG.com.

“Já estou no Brasil, onde fiz vários exames. Foi descartada a chance de hérnia, mas espero novos exames para descobrir o motivo da inflamação. Peço desculpas a todos, ao pessoal que acompanha o GRACIEMAG.com, e digo que, realmente, não luto por ser uma dor muito forte. Não tenho plano de saúde nos EUA e tive que vir ao Brasil para tratar melhor a lesão. No entanto, no Mundial estarei 100%!”, encerra.

The Jiu-Jitsu Pan kicked off this Thursday in Los Angeles. The event will include big names from world Jiu-Jitsu, but one of the most hotly-disputed divisions – middleweight – suffered a major loss. Pan 2010 runner-up Abmar Barbosa is signed up but will be unable to compete.

“I’m out and I’m also doubtful for the World Pro. I was at Robert Drysdale’s training camp and couldn’t put up with the pain I’ve been feeling in my groin,” the black belt tells GRACIEMAG.com.

“I’m already back in Brazil, where I’m having some exams taken. The chance of it being a hernia has been dispelled, but I’m waiting on more exams to find out the reason for the swelling. I beg everyone’s forgiveness, everyone who keeps up with GRACIEMAG.com, and I can say that I’m not fighting because it is very painful. I don’t have health insurance in the USA and I had to come to Brazil to be treated. I’ll be 100% for the Worlds, though,” he says in closing.

Following his conquest of the weight and open weight divisions at the first leg of the São Paulo Circuito Aberto circuit, late last month, Gabriel Vella had the tough task of picking his next competition: the Gramado, Brazil tryouts for the World Pro or the Jiu-Jitsu Pan. As the cost of travel would be quite high, the Ryan Gracie black belt opted for the IBJJF Pan, to take place March 24 to 27 in Irvine, California, and for which sign-ups end today (sign up here). “I’m really focused on this year’s Pan and I’m confident I can defend my title from 2010,” remarked Vella, the current Pan-American champion of the ultraheavyweight division.

Depois de conquistar o peso e absoluto na 1ª Etapa do Circuito Aberto Paulista de Jiu-Jitsu, no fim do mês passado, Gabriel Vella teve a difícil tarefa de escolher qual seria sua próxima competição: a seletiva de Gramado para o World Pro ou o Pan de Jiu-Jitsu. Como o custo das viagens ficaria muito alto, o faixa-preta de Ryan Gracie optou pelo Pan da IBJJF, que rola entre os dias 24 e 27 de março, em Irvine, Califórnia. “Estou bastante focado para o Pan deste ano e confiante para manter meu título de 2010”, comentou Vella, atual campeão pan-americano dos pesadíssimos.

É uma pena, mas o pentacampeão Rubens Charles, o Cobrinha, não deve tentar o hexa no Pan de Jiu-Jitsu desta temporada. Mais triste ainda, lógico, para os fãs do bom Jiu-Jitsu, o faixa-preta talvez não entre em ação em 2011.

“Queria muito poder participar do Pan, mas acho que dessa vez vou ter que ficar de fora. Entretanto, com certeza marcarei presença para ajudar os meus companheiros de equipe”, diz ao GRACIEMAG.com, para depois explicar os motivos:

“Estou montando uma academia na Califórnia e já está quase tudo pronto. Vou ter que dar uma atenção especial para a academia no começo, porque darei todas as aulas sozinho. Mas, assim que tiver um tempo para treinar, estarei de volta às competições”, conta.

“Morei em Atlanta por três anos, ajudava o Romero Jacaré a dar aulas na Alliance de lá. Hoje eu moro na Califórnia. Devo começar a dar aulas no dia 1º de março e no dia 28 quero fazer a inauguração oficial, com alguns convidados especiais, entre eles o Romero Jacaré e o Fabio Gurgel”, completa.

Se Cobrinha luta ou não em 2011, ainda não é definitivo. O lutador deixa um alento de esperança aos fãs.

“Se for lutar algum campeonato neste ano, vou como sempre lutei, jogando para frete e em busca da finalização. Acredito que é isso que vai fazer com que o nosso esporte continue crescendo”, encerra.

Fica a torcida para que Cobrinha volte aos campeonatos o mais rapidamente possível.

Five-time champion Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” won’t likely be trying for his sixth conquest of the Pan featherweight division, this season. Even more dismaying to Jiu-Jitsu fans is the fact the black belt may not return at all in 2011.

“I really want to participate in the Pan, but I think I’ll have to sit it out this time. I will certainly be there, though, to help my teammates,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com, after explaining why.

“I’m putting together a gym in California and it’s almost ready. I’ll have to give special attention to the academy early on, because I’ll be teaching all the classes myself. But, as soon as I have time to train, I’ll be back to competing,” he says.

“I lived in Atlanta for three years, I helped Romero Jacaré teach at Alliance there. Now I live in California. I should start teaching on March 1 and on the 28th I want to have the official inauguration, with special guests, among them Romero Jacaré and Fabio Gurgel,” he adds.

Whether or not Cobrinha fights in 2011 can’t yet be said. The fighter leaves room for his fans to hope, though.

“If I do compete this year, I’ll do it like I always do: going on the attack and looking for the submission. I feel that’s what keeps our sport growing,” he says in closing.

The fans can now only hope for Cobrinha’s swift return.

Kayron Gracie will likely be one of the submission savants in action at the Jiu-Jitsu Pan on March 24 in California. The Gracie will be defending the middleweight title he won last season after beating the likes of Sérgio Moraes and Abmar Barbosa, among others.

Lutarei o Pan sim, lógico! O Pan é o meu campeonato favorito de lutar.

O que está aprontando de diferente para este ano?

O que estou aprontando é nada mais nada menos que o mesmo que fiz no ano passado. Faço os mesmos treinos, só que, no entanto, com mais intensidade.

Ano passado apenas o Kayron foi capaz de vencê-lo no Pan. Prepara algo para surpreender a chamada “guarda-borracha” dele?

Não me passou na cabeça nenhuma forma de vencer a guarda do Kayron. Me passa na cabeça uma forma de estar bem para qualquer luta e para qualquer posição. Na faixa-preta não tem essa de pensar em um só ou em uma certa posição. Na preta você tem que simplesmente estar bem.

Robert Drysdale anunciou outro dia um camp para o Pan (veja aqui). Está dentro dessa?

Vou participar do camp da minha equipe, a Drysdade Jiu-Jitsu. Estarei lá e, logo após o Pan, vou para Abu Dhabi lutar no World Pro também. Obrigado ao GRACIEMAG.com pela entrevista! Of course! The Pan is my favorite competition.

What do you have brewing that’s different for this year?

What I’m doing is the same thing I did last year. I do the same training, just this time with greater intensity.

Last year only Kayron was able to beat you at the Pan. Do you have any surprises for that “rubber-like” guard of his?

No way of beating Kayron’s guard has popped into my head. What goes through my head is being in good shape to deal with any position. At black belt you can’t think just about one fighter or one certain position. At black you have to simply be well all around.

Robert Drysdale announced the other day that there will be a training camp for the Pan (see here). Are you in?

I’ll be at the training camp to be held by my team, Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu. I’ll be there and soon after the Pan I’ll head to Abu Dhabi to compete at the World Pro, as well.
