Jamais alguém havia passado a guarda de Roleta com tanta facilidade, nem em treinos. Mas o “Rigão”, sem saber que era impossível, foi lá e fez, abrindo 3 a 0 na luta. E acabando por faturar o bicampeonato absoluto do Pan.

14) Eduardo Jamelão x Jean Jacques Machado, 1996

Após resistir a uma chave de joelho arrochadíssima, Jamelão cresceu, chegou à meia-guarda de Jean Jacques e venceu o peso médio.

13) Marcio Feitosa x Vítor Shaolin, 1998

No 4º Pan, Marcinho passou duas vezes a guarda da revelação da Nova União, levando perigo numa chave americana arrochada.

12) Saulo Ribeiro é campeão absoluto, 1998

Com direito a finalização no local Renato Charuto, Saulo foi o grande nome do Pan do Havaí, um dos eventos mais divertidos da IBJJF até hoje.

11) “El Nino” varre a América, 1998 e 1999

Com finalizações insanas como a chave de coxa usada contra Zé Marcello, Nino Schembri encantou a torcida e ajudou a popularizar o Jiu-Jitsu nos EUA.

10) Royler Gracie x Marcos Parrumpinha, 1999

Royler beliscou mais uma medalhinha de ouro para a vasta coleção, em luta movimentadíssima na final do pena.

9) BJ Penn “estreia”, 2000

O havaiano casca-grossa perdeu as estribeiras e saiu no tapa com o adversário Francisco Neto, sendo desclassificado na hora.

8) Fernando Margarida x Fabio Gurgel, 2001

Em fase soberba, Margarida finalizou seu ex-professor Fabio Gurgel num estrangulamento enquanto o líder da Alliance forçava a passagem.

Num lutaço quando nenhum dos dois eram famosos, Roger raspou Fabricio na faixa-marrom e faturou o título.

5) Marcio Pé de Pano x Fabricio Werdum, 2003

O gaúcho fez sua estreia na faixa-preta e começou vencendo nas vantagens o favoritíssimo Marcio Cruz, o Pé de Pano. Mas Pé botou o trem nos trilhos, montou e pegou o braço de Werdum, no primeiro encontro entre as feras, ambos hoje no MMA.

4) Roberto Gordo x Rener Gracie, 2003

No primeiro Desafio Brasil x EUA, Rener surpreendeu Gordo com um triângulo arrochado por sete minutos. “Se fosse em treino eu teria batido”, admitiu Roberto, que resistiu, defendeu-se e venceu a luta.

3) Braulio Estima, o Carcará “The Flash”, 2003

Com pressa para ir ver o pôr do sol em Santa Barbara, Carcará finalizou todos os seus oponentes em cinco minutos, faturando peso e absoluto na faixa-marrom.

Um dos maiores vencedores no Pan, o peso-pena Rubens Charles se meteu no absoluto do Pan 2009 e quase levou. Levantou o ginásio em Dominguez Hills na vitória sobre o mais pesado Rafael Lovato Jr, mas deixou escapar a vitória no finzinho contra Otávio Sousa, perdendo a chance de entrar para a galeria de campeões absolutos do Pan, como Xande Ribeiro, Roger Gracie, Marcio Pé de Pano, Fabio Leopoldo, André Galvão e outros craques. With a submission over local boy Renato Charuto, Saulo was the big name of the Pan in Hawaii, one of the most entertaining IBJJF events to date.

11. “El Nino” sweeps America, 1998 and 1999

With outlandish finishes like his thigh lock on Zé Marcello, Nino Schembri wowed the crowd and helped popularize Jiu-Jitsu in the USA.

10. Royler Gracie vs Marcos Parrumpinha, 1999

Royler snagged another gold medal for his vast collection, in a lively featherweight final.

9. BJ Penn’s “debut”, 2000

The hard-nosed Hawaiian lost his cool and threw down with opponent Francisco Neto, and was duly disqualified.

8. Fernando Margarida vs Fabio Gurgel, 2001

During a sublime stage in his career, Margarida submitted his former teacher Fabio Gurgel with a choke while the leader of Alliance forced his way to pass guard.

6. Roger Gracie vs Fabricio Werdum, 2002

In a match for the ages, when neither of the two was famous, Roger swept Fabricio and took the brown belt title.

5. Marcio Pé de Pano vs Fabricio Werdum, 2003

The Southern Brazil native made his debut at black belt and started out beating the much-favored-to-win Marcio “Pe de Pano” Cruz. But Pe got back on track, mounting and catching Werdum by the arm, in the first encounter beween the two, both of whom are now in MMA.

4. Roberto Gordo vs Rener Gracie, 2003

In the first Brazil vs USA challenge, Rener caught Gordo by surprise, holding him in a snug triangle choke for seven minutes. “Had it been in training I’d have tapped,” admitted Roberto, who held out, defended and won the match.

3. Braulio “Carcará” Estima, “The Flash”, 2003

In a hurry to catch the Santa Barbara sunset, Carcará submitted all his opponents in five minutes, winning at weight and open weight in the brown belt division.

One of the Pan’s all-time biggest winners, featherweight Rubens Charles stuck his neck out in the absolute of the 2009 Pan and nearly took it. He brought the gymnasium in Dominguez Hills to its feet with his win over the heavier Rafael Lovato Jr., but let the title slip through his fingers in the very end against Otavio Sousa, missing his chance of making it into the gallery of the Pan’s absolute champions, alongside Xande Ribeiro, Roger Gracie, Marcio Pé de Pano, Fabio Leopoldo, André Galvão and other aces. So who will be the big standout this year?
