A IBJJF realizou pela primeira vez uma edição do seu BJJ Pro em Atlanta, nos EUA. Como é de costume, o torneio atraiu grandes nomes do Jiu-Jitsu, em busca do pelo prêmio em dinheiro.

Os campeões do evento, realizado nesse sábado, dia 30, foram João Miyao, Otávio Sousa, Vitor Oliveira e Leonardo Nogueira. Cada vencedor das categorias faixa-preta adulto levou o belo cheque de 4 mil dólares. Os segundos colocados ficaram com 2 mil dólares.

GRACIEMAG.COM: Você faz uma das lutas mais aguardadas do Metamoris Pro, ao encarar Kron Gracie, que luta sempre sedento por pegar. Como está a preparação para a luta aí no QG da Gracie Barra?

OTAVIO SOUSA: A preparação está ótima, treinando forte, muito focado. Não vejo a hora de subir naquele ringue em San Diego, no dia 14 de outubro. Meu treino está bem diferente para esta luta, afinal a estratégia é totalmente diferente. Uma coisa é lutar o Mundial, diversas lutas, outra coisa é fazer uma luta casada sem valer pontos, onde até o atleta que está ganhando não pode pensar em se dosar – tem de ir para cima para pegar. Para vencer um evento assim o condicionamento tem de estar excelente.

O que isso tudo muda em relação à sua maneira de lutar em especial?

Meu estilo de jogo já é bastante pra frente, sempre busco a finalização quando possível, então não vou sofrer com as mudanças. Apenas vou adicionar uma pitada de agressividade, e cair para dentro do começo ao fim.

Quem está ajudando você para os treinos?

Tem muita gente especial comigo. Sou grato a todos os amigos da Gracie Barra que estão aqui no meu dia a dia me ajudando a evoluir, me colocando pra cima e sempre trazendo vibrações positivas. Gostaria de mencionar um nome que eu não poderia deixar de citar, o Philipe Della Monica. Ele tem sido um parceiraço e está me ajudando muito, tanto nos treinos de Jiu-Jitsu quanto na minha preparação. Está sempre me puxando até meu limite.

O Zé Radiola vai conseguir estar no seu córner na luta?

Gostaria muito que isso fosse possível, ter meu professor Zé Radiola lá gritando e se esgoelando durante minhas lutas não tem preço. Desta vez não será possível ele vir, mas tenho certeza de que ele vai torcer muito por mim como sempre faz. É inexplicável quando ele está por perto, estava me lembrando de uma cena do Mundial 2012. Ele quase teve um troço, de tão nervoso que ele fica, e acabei campeão nos segundos finais. Foi emocionante. Para esta luta no Metamoris meu córner será o Philipe.

Você falou em mudar os treinos. Como se treina para uma luta de 20 minutos sem pontos? 

Vinte minutos é bastante tempo de luta, ainda mais se tratando de dois atletas de ponta. Estou puxando o gás em cada treino, dando o meu máximo em cada exercício, em cada sessão de sparring. Estou encarando esta luta como um novo desafio para minha carreira. Sempre lutei os campeonatos da IBJJF e as regras do Metamoris são completamente diferentes. Encaro de uma forma positiva e acho que são campeonatos assim que engrandecem ainda mais nosso esporte, valorizam mais ainda o atleta financeiramente e profissionalizam o Jiu-Jitsu cada vez mais. Tenho todo o respeito pelo Kron, ele é um fenômeno, e tem tudo pra fazermos um lutão.

Você gosta das regras então. Alguma coisa que você mudaria para melhorar ainda mais?

Para a torcida será uma grande festa. A única coisa de que não sou a favor é a luta terminar sem um campeão caso não haja finalização. Aceitei a luta porque gosto de buscar sempre novos desafios, e tenho certeza de que será uma ótima experiência. Gosto de me testar, mas ainda prefiro as regras da IBJJF. Outro lado legal é a exposição de cada atleta, afinal são lutas em menor quantidade, e os atletas ganham evidência. Vejo o Metamoris como um evento complementar ao Jiu-Jitsu de competição que temos hoje, com a categoria de base lutando para aparecer, os faixas-pretas de todos os países se pegando e tudo mais.

Kron venceu você uma vez numa final de Mundial, em 2007, na faixa-marrom. Nesse ano você foi campeão mundial absoluto. O que mudou de lá para cá? 

Hoje somos dois lutadores bem diferentes. Eu me vejo não só melhor tecnicamente, mas também mais maduro, experiente e confiante. O Kron é muito duro e tem uns botes perigosos, ele não deixa o adversário respirar. Tenho minha estratégia e meu plano para anular o jogo dele, mas vou deixar vocês curiosos até o dia 14 (risos).

Dar aula todo dia e ser campeão mundial é dureza. Qual o segredo?

Não é mesmo fácil conciliar tudo isso. Mas como dizem, quando é sacrificante o gostinho da vitória é muito melhor! As recompensas valem a pena. Hoje ajudo a transformar a vida de muitas pessoas através do Jiu-Jitsu, seja disciplinando as criança, ensinando defesa pessoal para as mulheres ou passando uma vida mais saudável para todos.

Qual a receita para ser campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu hoje?

Humildade é tudo, é o que leva você longe. Basta trabalhar duro, acreditar em si próprio e não ter medo de errar ou de arriscar. A vida volta e meia nos dá uma rasteira, mas a gente vai lá e levanta. Perseverança é tudo. Não é o quão forte você bate, mas o quanto você aguenta sem desistir, entende? O segredo do sucesso é continuar andando para a frente.

GRACIEMAG.com: You’re in one of the most highly anticipated matches at Metamoris Pro, taking on Kron Gracie, who’s always dead set on getting the tapout. How are your preparations for the match going?

OTAVIO SOUSA: My preparations are going great. I’m training hard and am really focused. I can’t wait to hit the mat come October 14 in San Diego. I’m training differently for this match. After all, the strategy will be totally different. It’s one thing to compete at the Worlds in a number of matches. It’s another to do a supermatch where points don’t count and even if you’re winning you can’t think about slowing things down—you have to go on the attack and finish. To win an event like this one you have to be in great shape.

How does all that change in relation to your particular way of fighting?

My style is already quite attack-oriented. I always go for the submission whenever possible, so I’m not going to undergo any changes. I’m just going to add aggression and go for it till the end.

Who’s helping you in training?

There are a lot of special people with me. I’m thankful to my friends at Gracie Barra who are here helping me to evolve on a daily basis, uplifting me and giving me positive vibrations. I’d like to mention one name who I can’t leave out—Philipe Della Monica. He’s been a great partner and is helping me a lot both in Jiu-Jitsu training and conditioning. He’s always pushing me to my limit.

Will Zé Radiola be able to make it there to corner you?

I’d really like to have my teacher Zé Radiola there if possible. Having him there barking instructions is priceless. He might not be able to make it this time, but I’m sure he’ll be cheering for me like he always does. I can’t explain what it’s like when he’s around. I remember a scene from the 2012 Worlds. He was having fits, he gets so nervous, and I ended up winning the championship in the final seconds. It was exciting. For this fight at Metamoris Philipe will be cornering me.

You said something about changing your training. How do you train for a 20-minute match with no points?

Twenty minutes is a long time for a match, especially when there are two top-tier athletes in it. I’m pushing the gas in every roll, giving my all in every exercise, every sparring session. I’m looking at this match like a new challenge in my career. I’ve always competed at IBJJF championships, and Metamoris rules are completely different. I see this as a positive thing, and I feel that championships like this make the sport better, value the athletes financially and make Jiu-Jitsu more professional a sport. I have lots of respect for Kron. He’s a phenomenon, and this has all the makings of a great match.

So you like the rules. Is there anything you’d change to make it even better?

It’ll be a great party for the cheering sections. The only thing I’m not in favor of is the match ending without a winner if there’s no submission. I accepted the match because I like new challenges, and I’m sure it’ll be a great experience. I like testing myself, but I still prefer IBJJF rules. Another cool part is the exposure the athletes get; after all, there are fewer matches, so the athletes come to the forefront. I see Metamoris as an event complementing the competition Jiu-Jitsu we now have, where the incoming athletes fighting for recognition, the black belts from all the countries squaring off against each other and all.

Kron beat you one time at the Worlds, in 2007, as a brown belt. That year you were absolute world champion. What has changed since then?

These days we’re totally different fighters. I don’t just see myself as being better technically, but also more mature, experienced and confident. Kron is really tough and has really dangerous attacks. He doesn’t give his opponents room to breathe. I have my strategy and plan for neutralizing his game but I’ll keep you guessing until the 14th (laughs).

Teaching class every day and being world champion must be rough. What’s the secret to it?

It is indeed rough reconciling it all. But as they say, with sacrifice the taste of victory is all the more satisfying. The rewards make it worthwhile. Today I help transform people’s lives through Jiu-Jitsu, whether by teaching discipline to children, self-defense to women or showing everyone how to lead a healthier life.

What’s the recipe for being a Jiu-Jitsu world championship these days?

It’s all about humility—that’ll take you a long way. You just need to work hard, believe in yourself and not be afraid of making mistakes or taking risks. Now and then life blindsides you, but we have to just get back on our feet. Perseverance is everything. It’s not how hard you hit, but how much you can take without giving up, understand? The secret to success is to keep forging ahead.

It sounds like a match made in gentle-art heaven, but there’s a card in the works that has major stars from Jiu-Jitsu’s past and present facing off in classic no-points, fight-to-the-finish style. And it’s not in the UFC.

Metamoris Pro Jiu-Jitsu Invitational is coming up on October 14, and it’ll be headlined by the matchup gi-fighting fans crave most: three-time absolute champion of the world Roger Gracie will be taking on the wunderkind currently holding the world absolute title, Marcus Bochecha, in a 20-minute gi-clad bout where only submissions count for the win. Now that matchup alone would make buying the pay-per-view worthwhile, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

ADCC double gold winner André Galvão will return to the mat too, taking on UFC founder Rorion Gracie’s son Ryron. Then there’s a blast from the past, with ADCC legend Jean-Jacques Machado squaring off with Nelson Monteiro, one of the founders of the ADCC, who will be competing on his home turf.
