Today in NYC was the day for the white-belts in  the gi to strut their stuff and the open tournament for the blue-belts. It’s a different vibe for folks entering the mats for the first time — they still have everything to prove, and the apprehension can be felt in the air, yet there were some great matches on the mats along with the folks in blue.

After lunchtime, the mats got cleared for the folks not wearing a gi and the day went for Devhonte Johnson from Unity, who got the Super Heavy win and closed the Open class with teammate Felipe Silva. Anton Berzin from Balance, who won in Heavy, and Gabriel Almeida from CheckMat put up good fights with the Unity guys.

It feels like Winter in NY as this whole side of the US got hit with a major snowstorm which left some folks doing more shoveling than Jiu-Jitsu. The heat got turned up at the basements of City College, where the NY Fall Open takes place. The great winner of the day was Michael Liera, from Atos, who won the absolute and the gold in the middleweight division.

The folks from master 1 didn’t want to be outshone and put out some great visual and exciting matches with Leonardo de Oliveira taking the big win in the open class.

On the overall academies results, Lloyd Irvin got the top post with 12 points over second place, Alliance.

Max Gimenis raises his check at the NY BJJ Pro.

Last weekend, the city of New York welcomed the NY BJJ Pro, an event that pays cash prizes to the best of each division.

As well as the women’s absolute divisions from blue up to black belt, the men’s weight divisions paid its winners, and well-known names could be found on the podiums.

At ultra-heavy, it was Max Gimenis (GFTeam) who got the top prize. He faced Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) in the final and outplayed him to bag the gold medal plus 4,000 dollars.

At heavyweight, Kaynan Duarte (Atos) soared. Still a newbie in his black belt career, he took the top spot on the podium that had Murilo Santana (Unity) coming in second, followed by Tim Spriggs (Lloyd Irvin) and Holando Monteiro (GD Jiu-Jitsu) sharing third.

In the middleweight division, Manuel Ribamar (Unity) bested John Satava (Alliance), who took silver plus 1,500 bucks.

Before that, in the featherweight final, Jamil Hill (Lloyd Irvin) showed he isn’t done riding the momentum from his recent world championship. The American defeated Thiago Macedo (Rodrigo Pinheiro JJ) in the final.

In the women’s absolute, Cláudia do Val (De la Riva) beat Nathiely de Jesus (Unity), securing the 1,500-dollar check for herself.

A movimentada Nova York recebeu no último final de semana grandes feras do Jiu-Jitsu na sua edição do BJJ Pro, evento que premia os melhores de cada categoria não apenas com as medalhas douradas mas com prêmios em dinheiro.

Além dos absolutos, da faixa-azul à faixa-preta feminino, as categorias de peso no masculino premiaram seus vencedores, e nomes conhecidos do cenário figuraram nos pódios do pena ao pesadíssimo.

Na categoria mais pesada, a dos pesadíssimos, quem levou a melhor foi Max Gimenis (GFTeam). A fera encarou Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) na final e conseguiu bater a fera, levando para casa os 4 mil dólares de premiação.

Já nos pesos pesados foi a vez de Kaynan Duarte (Atos) brilhar. Ainda novo em sua corrida na faixa-preta, Kaynan ficou no topo do pódio que teve Murilo Santan (Unity) em segundo, além de Tim Spriggs (Lloyd Irvin) e Holando Monteiro (GD Jiu-Jitsu) em terceiro.

No peso médio, Manuel Ribamar (Unity) faturou o ouro e o cheque da IBJJF, ao bater John Satava (Alliance) na finalíssima. Satava mordeu, além da prata, um prêmio de 1.500 dólares pela segunda colocação.

Antes, no peso-pena, Jamil Hill (Lloyd Irvin) mostrou que ainda está embalado após a conquista do título mundial. A fera americana mordeu o topo do pódio ao bater Thiago Macedo (Rodrigo Pinheiro JJ) no duelo final da categoria.

No absoluto feminino, Cláudia do Val (De la Riva) superou Nathiely de Jesus (Unity) para garantir a premiação de 1.500 dólares.

O número um do mundo no esporte, por exemplo, vai estar lá exibindo sua guarda. Trata-se do faixa-preta Paulo Miyao, que vai disputar o evento ao lado do irmão João. Além deles, Otavio Sousa, Neiman Gracie, Robsinho Gracie, Abraham Marte, Gianni Grippo, Garry Tonon, John Satava, Renan Borges, Marcelo Lapela, Matheus Diniz, Dillon Danis e outras feras prometem eletrizar os tapetes instalados no City College.

GRACIEMAG: Are you excited for the event?

ELOY SANTOS & MILTON REGIS: We are thrilled to bring one more edition of the LI Pride. For us it is like a son getting bigger, stronger and better. Each edition gives us more experience and expertise. We have the support of the most important schools from NY, NJ, MA, DE, PA and NH. And we are not surprised to also get athletes from all over the country and international competitors, too.

Why did you decide to start a Jiu-Jitsu tournament in NY?

Well, the fact is the Jiu-Jitsu competitors and teachers were unhappy with the service offered at the other grappling events. There were no Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the NY area, even having so many Jiu-Jitsu academies, and so many athletes.

How long have you been running the PRIDE NY?

We started in 2007 with only two rings inside a small gym behind the church, but with very good feedback from the competitors and Jiu-Jitsu schools. We still have so many challenges but also a big dream, with every edition breaking the records. Building a good reputation is not an easy job. Beyond the championship, there are a lot of expectations. It is our responsibility, to preserve the integrity of the competitors and to give our spectators a chance to watch a true show of Jiu-Jitsu.

Any big names confirmed?

We have had so many top athletes fighting at our events and they are always welcome. But it is very important to make this championship a platform for the next generation champions. Making everyone comfortable to fight and have a chance to win, if not the medal a chance to learn a lesson and have a great experience.

Do you have any message for who is looking for to compete at the PRIDE XIX?

Yes. Train hard to do your best, physically and technically, to represent your academy. Also invite everyone: family and friends. Help spread our lifestyle and the good news about the fastest growing sport in America. So, from all of us, the LI Pride Championship staff, dedicating our best to make another very good show.

Is there anything else we need to know?

Our work through the years has been accompanied by an evolution and a development of sport Jiu-Jitsu rules. Many thanks to the contribution of the greatest masters and professors in this martial arts. Particularly Grand Master Francisco Mansur, red belt who has worked over the years to study and improve the sport and the rules used in the official events around the world, making this sport uniform and respectful.

The beauty of Jiu Jitsu stems from the fact that it truly is for everyone. To practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu it doesn’t matter if the person is young, old, fit, etc. This martial art is effective in helping you achieve fitness by giving you a workout in which all the muscles are active. The beginner’s class at Soca BJJ teaches the fundamental techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a safe manner. Drills reinforce those techniques and love sparring put those techniques to the test. All in a nurturing environment in which all team members help each other and the instruction is top notch.

Just a few months ago the IBJJF held a tournament in New York City that reluctantly sold out very early. Many locals and even people traveling into the Big Apple were not happy about the limit. But the IBJJF is putting on another tournament on July 13 in the same location and good for you, it hasn’t reached capacity.

The Jiu-Jitsu Pan Championship 2013 in late March, in Irvine, Calif. was not so good for Alliance athlete Bernardo Faria.

Bronze in the absolute, the black belt from Minas Gerais, Brazil, failed to return Sunday to compete in the super heavyweight. As a result, he lost some positions in the IBJJF ranking and saw Marcus Buchecha, ultra heavyweight and absolute champion, take his position at the top.

The athlete, who is recovering in New York, where he has been training with the star Marcelo Garcia, commented on his rib injury with GracieMag.

“It was kinda serious, my rib clicked in the middle of the (semifinal) fight with Buchecha and from there I had only to defend myself, because I could not move. But now I’m taking care of my recovery and I’ll be back in the Long Beach World Championship, God willing,” said Faria.

And why would a heavy fighter with a solid game be learning from a light and fast athlete like Marcelo Garcia? Bernardo said:

“Training with Marcelo has been a fantastic experience. I’m actually getting to know him better and understanding how he thinks about Jiu-Jitsu, the way he trains. The coolest thing is to see that, as a person, he may be even better than as an athlete. He is very humble and considerate to everyone, so I am learning outside the mats as well,” he said.

About the positions, Faria analyzed: “I’m trying to bring several of his positions to my game, and he has helped me with this. It’s hard for me to completely change my style, but I can add many things to what I do, many details. Not to mention the no-gi Jiu-Jitsu, which I have trained a lot here. I’m feeling a cool evolution.”

The IBJJF New York Open is set for April 20 in the big apple. With many academies representing some of the largest teams such as Alliance, Nova Uniao, Gracie Elite and Gracie Barra the turn-out is sure to bring much competition. Right in the middle of tournament season between Pan Ams and Worlds, learn with the team that has won every major tournament including the 2012 NY Open.

In order to prepare, Fabio Clemente and his team of instructors are inviting you to their GMA New York academy. The training is from April 9-18 and includes top competitors and instructors like Babs, the Iturralde brothers Francisco “Sinistro” and Leo from Alliance Ecuador. There will be two training sessions a day at the academy. You can read about the atmosphere here when GracieMag made a visit earlier this year.

The camp is open to any team, affiliation and rank. If you are traveling and need accommodation, you can pay $40 a night to stay at the Alliance house with other members of the team and camp. For the entire camp, pay $300 and for just a week you can pay $200.
