Jiu-Jitsu black belt Gilbert Durinho was unstoppable last Friday. In the cage at WOCS 20, the Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu world champion needed just two minutes to get the takedown, take back-control and finish Vinicius Bohrer with a rear-naked choke. The performance caught our readers’ attention, and they wrote in asking for the gi-clad warrior now carving out a name for himself in MMA to teach the takedown. “I repeated that takedown so much, it comes automatically to me now. The footwork is from judo; you have to take a step and turn your hip, getting the opponent to walk with you,” he explained just after the fight. He didn’t leave it at just theory, though, demonstrating the position exclusively for GRACIEMAG.com.

Durinho will again see MMA action this coming Saturday, when he takes on Paulo Nego Trama in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

According to IG.com.br columnist Guilherme Barros, billionaire tycoon Eike Batista has announced the creation of IMX, a new sports and entertainment company arising from a joint venture between EBX and IMG Worldwide.

Among the projects the journalist says the new company will be involved with are the UFC in Brazil and the Volleyball World Championship, as well as talent management.

The Nogueira brothers may be the first fighters to sign with IMX. IMG Worldwide already manages the careers of tennis star Maria Sharapova and supermodel Gisele Bundchen, for example.

Anderson Silva is still training hard to not leave his fans frustrated in his fight against Vitor Belfort the coming 5th in Las Vegas, at UFC 126. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of people left frustrated after training with him, as Brazil’s O Globo newspaper revealed this Sunday.

Reporter and MMA enthusiast Ary Cunha covered a training session with the UFC middleweight champion at the Nogueira brothers’ training center and witnessed the effort (in vain) of Jungle Fight champion Erick Silva in trying to land a punch to the face of the fighter who hasn’t lost in his twelve appearances in the octagon. Meanwhile, Vitor Belfort has also been hard at training, in Las Vegas, and Anderson knows it. Asked by Ary Cunha how he imagines the fight will be, Anderson fires back with an excuse response: “If I were Mother Dinah (a psychic), I’d be able to foresee that. Since I’m not, I’m getting ready for any situation, whether on the ground or standing,” said the thirty-five-year-old black belt. “I’m like find wine: the older, the better.”

The video was a flash fever on Facebook (check out minute 4 in the video below). Whether you agree or not with what Wand had to say, the point is that the former Pride FC champion felt the need to teach the outspoken wrestler a lesson. He played the part of a master speaking to a young disciple.

The point that emerges, as I see it, is that these days MMA is loaded with trainers, but masters, those ones who orient the fighter to adhere to strict discipline, are few and far between.

I don’t know much about Sonnen’s story, but it seems like he lacked someone to set boundaries for him in recent times. On the other hand, Wanderlei was always an extremely disciplined fighter, ever since his days at Chute Boxe academy in Curitiba.

We’ve seen several teams where fighters, besides being the single focus of the team, are their own managers. Rather than being guides, their coaches behave as though they were mere employees. Is that the sort of professionalism the sport needs? Would a Formula 1 racer be able to command the team?

There’s no doubt MMA is a spectacle, and the remarks made play into that. The fighters are true stars, but lacking in that dose of discipline that the martial arts provide us with through the person of a master, many of the stars quickly take on a luster of their own.

The Jiu-Jitsu experience shows us how the lack of a good master can cause us to fall face first, both in the ring and in life.
