Master Sérgio Ignacio began his career in Rio de Janeiro, at his father’s private security firm. His father was an honorable Air Force lieutenant and former boxer and mixed martial arts fighter in Belém, Pará.

Sérgio quickly learned that the streets presented unpredictable scenarios, with physical confrontations and high-risk incidents where success was never guaranteed. Therefore, he sought something more reliable than weapons and wiser than luck: knowledge.

Instructed by some of the most prepared and experienced instructors in all fields, Master Sérgio Ignacio became an encyclopedia of techniques, tactical and strategic defense knowledge, after decades of firsthand experiences that can now help people during complex police operations or in situations as commonplace as a night on the subway.

The renowned police commissioner, now an active coral belt Jiu-Jitsu instructor in Florida, has experienced numerous high-risk situations, such as in 2016 when he nearly lost his life in an operation in the alleys of Vila Cruzeiro, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, after a grenade bounced and landed between his feet. He survived the shrapnel thanks to the teachings he had learned, combined with the composure he possessed under maximum pressure, a quality honed on the streets and on the mats.

“It wasn’t my time,” reflects the master, who has become a solid bridge between martial arts and public and private security. Looking back on his career, Sérgio Ignacio reflects:

“I am an experienced police officer, and if I have survived this far, it is thanks to the excellent instructors and training partners I have had since the 1980s. What I learned in active service, I make a point of passing on in BJJ Defense classes, a course for the benefit of martial arts instructors and teachers, public and private security agents, and people of all ages in civil society. A self-respecting instructor wants their students to be better than they were, and that’s how I always try to teach. As a friend says: I don’t save money, I’m going to save knowledge?”

Master Sérgio began Jiu-Jitsu in the early 1980s, brought by his friend Renzo Gracie, and was one of the first students of the renowned Gracie Barra team. He was Renzo’s training partner and accompanied him in several MMA fights in the United States and Japan.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the study of combat arts provided him with invaluable resources and technical details that saved him from countless close calls as a police officer. He went on to teach and shape the vision of thousands of good police officers in Rio de Janeiro.

Over the years, he also distinguished himself in the private security sector, participating in national and international events, providing security for celebrities, authorities, and the general public.

It is this practical experience, tested in real-life situations, that he seeks to transmit through his teaching system called BJJ Defense in academies around the world, from police department mats to Jiu-Jitsu schools in Florida, Rio, and New York, across all flags and teams.

BJJ Defense instruction takes place in training sessions of a few hours or in segmented seminars divided into modules, depending on the demand of those interested. The courses have already served academies, public security forces, the private sector, Jiu-Jitsu instructors seeking specialization, and civil society in general, in schools such as Renzo Gracie Upper West Side, run by Professor Luca Atalla, and Ralph Gracie, run by Professor Regis Calixto.

The Jiu-Jitsu master also explained how he adapted and condensed everything he experienced while actively practicing. After all, Sérgio Ignacio has accumulated specializations in various courses and training programs, and developed and implemented the most renowned tactical courses for civil police officers in Rio de Janeiro, such as the Special Tactical Operations Course (COTE) of the Special Resources Coordination of the Civil Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CORE).

“The BJJ Defense system is a bridge between classic self-defense and the perceived needs of the contemporary world. Nothing that works is discarded in my courses, where I try to make as many connections as possible with real life. The philosophy of what I teach is to offer the maximum resources for professionals or citizens to avoid any confrontation. By distancing themselves from the problem, they will have a better chance of returning home safely. There can always be unforeseen events on the streets, the result can be unexpected, but training increases our chances of victory or survival,” analyzed the master, who also worked as private security for the Brazilian headquarters in five Olympic Games, in Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, London and Rio.

“There’s a well-known protocol in the US that teaches how to act in the face of imminent crises and attacks, whose motto is ‘if possible, avoid confrontation: Run or hide; if not possible, fight.’ What BJJ Defense instruction seeks to convey, in a practical and objective way, is how to use the Technique-Tactics-Strategy tripod to increase your chances of success in a difficult moment,” summarized Master Sérgio Ignacio.

For the police officer and instructor, the real dynamics of events will show us what is necessary and possible to do – sometimes even to have the opportunity to escape or hide, it may be inevitable to have to fight. After all, victims under threat need to find ways out and solutions in the blink of an eye, and for this to be done efficiently, experience and technical knowledge are necessary. Through training, students develop not only physical reaction capabilities, but also essential attributes such as reaction time, proper positioning, perception of the scenario, and the ability to make decisions under pressure.

And is Jiu-Jitsu focused on self-defense compatible with training for competition, in the master’s view?

“Of course it is,” assures Sérgio. “And the proof of that is my own son, my first black belt. Daniel is trained in both areas. I took him from white belt to black belt with all aspects of BJJ involved, and always with the guidance and participation of Renzo Gracie. He even underwent periodic knowledge exams at every belt promotion. We always respect the maturation time at each stage, but we mainly demand technical knowledge in all areas. That’s how you train a complete black belt instructor.”

Jamil attacks the arm to nab another title.

After conquering the top of the BJJ world this year by becoming an IBJJF world champion, Jamil Hill has kept busy, continuing to enter tournaments and sharpen his unorthodox style even more. The most recent example came at the New York Open, held early this month.

To take gold in the featherweight division, the American from Team Lloyd Irvin faced Matheus Gonzaga. Feared for his guard, Jamil had to play on top at the start as he was pulled. After attacking and scrambling things up, Jamil wound up on the bottom and started adjusting his final attack.

While being stacked, Jamil managed to apply a lasso and waited for the right opportunity. As he tried to sweep and saw his opponent sideways, Jamil went for the back and attacked the unattended arm, stretching the winning armbar.

Depois de conquistar o topo do Jiu-Jitsu em 2018, ao faturar o Mundial da Califa, Jamil Hill não parou de se jogar em torneios para afiar ainda mais seu estilo pouco ortodoxo. O mais recente foi o New York Open, realizado no início deste mês.

Para ficar com o ouro na divisão de peso-pena, o americano da equipe Lloyd Irvin encarou Matheus Gonzaga. Temido por sua guarda, Jamil teve que jogar por cima no início, ao ser puxado. Depois de atacar e se embolar na luta, Jamil terminou por baixo, e começou a ajustar seu bote.

Da emborcada, Jamil conseguiu laçar e esperou a hora certa para atacar. Ao tentar raspar e ver o oponente de lado, Jamil tentou as costas e atacou no braço que sobrara, e esticou o armlock campeão.

A badalada cidade de Nova York, nos EUA, recebeu no último final de semana mais uma edição do New York Fall Open de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF. O evento foi tomado por cascas-grossas da região e cidades próximas, o que resultou em verdadeiras batalhas de alto nível técnico nos tatames azuis e amarelos.

Um exemplo prático disto foi a final do absoluto faixa-preta adulto, entre Michael Liera Jr. (Atos) e Felipinho Cesar (Unity). Depois de duelarem na final dos meio-pesados, os dois craques ficaram frente a frente na luta em peso aberto.

A disputa foi acirrada, com ações importantes de ambos os lados, tanto por baixo quanto por cima. Contudo, no fim das contas, foi o americano Liera que levou a melhor, acumulou mais pontos e garantiu o ouro duplo na competição.

Last weekend, the city of New York welcomed the NY BJJ Pro, an event that pays cash prizes to the best of each division.

As well as the women’s absolute divisions from blue up to black belt, the men’s weight divisions paid its winners, and well-known names could be found on the podiums.

At ultra-heavy, it was Max Gimenis (GFTeam) who got the top prize. He faced Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) in the final and outplayed him to bag the gold medal plus 4,000 dollars.

At heavyweight, Kaynan Duarte (Atos) soared. Still a newbie in his black belt career, he took the top spot on the podium that had Murilo Santana (Unity) coming in second, followed by Tim Spriggs (Lloyd Irvin) and Holando Monteiro (GD Jiu-Jitsu) sharing third.

In the middleweight division, Manuel Ribamar (Unity) bested John Satava (Alliance), who took silver plus 1,500 bucks.

Before that, in the featherweight final, Jamil Hill (Lloyd Irvin) showed he isn’t done riding the momentum from his recent world championship. The American defeated Thiago Macedo (Rodrigo Pinheiro JJ) in the final.

In the women’s absolute, Cláudia do Val (De la Riva) beat Nathiely de Jesus (Unity), securing the 1,500-dollar check for herself.

A movimentada Nova York recebeu no último final de semana grandes feras do Jiu-Jitsu na sua edição do BJJ Pro, evento que premia os melhores de cada categoria não apenas com as medalhas douradas mas com prêmios em dinheiro.

Além dos absolutos, da faixa-azul à faixa-preta feminino, as categorias de peso no masculino premiaram seus vencedores, e nomes conhecidos do cenário figuraram nos pódios do pena ao pesadíssimo.

Na categoria mais pesada, a dos pesadíssimos, quem levou a melhor foi Max Gimenis (GFTeam). A fera encarou Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) na final e conseguiu bater a fera, levando para casa os 4 mil dólares de premiação.

Já nos pesos pesados foi a vez de Kaynan Duarte (Atos) brilhar. Ainda novo em sua corrida na faixa-preta, Kaynan ficou no topo do pódio que teve Murilo Santan (Unity) em segundo, além de Tim Spriggs (Lloyd Irvin) e Holando Monteiro (GD Jiu-Jitsu) em terceiro.

No peso médio, Manuel Ribamar (Unity) faturou o ouro e o cheque da IBJJF, ao bater John Satava (Alliance) na finalíssima. Satava mordeu, além da prata, um prêmio de 1.500 dólares pela segunda colocação.

Antes, no peso-pena, Jamil Hill (Lloyd Irvin) mostrou que ainda está embalado após a conquista do título mundial. A fera americana mordeu o topo do pódio ao bater Thiago Macedo (Rodrigo Pinheiro JJ) no duelo final da categoria.

Lucas Pinheiro’s year is in full swing, to say the least. If in 2016 he didn’t compete much because of a serious car accident that sidelined him for eight months, this year the 23-year-old is obsessed with making up for it. After participating in more than ten competitions this season, winning nine gold medals and a bronze at the World Championship, he will try for a tenth title at the Pan IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship, which kicks off Sept. 30th in New York.

Ron Incerta, Lucas’s strength and conditioning coach, shed some light on some of the work that has been going on behind the scenes. “We are using methods that will give Lucas peak power in both relative strength, which is the amount of force for a body size, and in the strength endurance,” he said. “His specific conditioning will primarily come from his skills training jiu-jitsu — or, in other words, rolling on the mat. The goal of all his strength training is to complement the energy system that he will need to win the gold for his next competition.”

NY City-based organization with professional and amateur events to be led by Rolles, Rich Byrne and Kenny Florian

Gotham gets to grips with grappling as today marks the official launch of New York City’s premier competitive Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) grappling promotion, KASAI Elite Grappling Championships (“KASAI”).

KASAI will produce professional competitive tournaments and spirited amateur events in venues throughout the city, with its inaugural card scheduled for the fall of 2017. The promotion is led by an executive team including:

•Rolles Gracie, internationally renowned grappler, fourth-degree BJJ black belt and member of the sport’s first family of fighting – the Gracies.

•Richard Byrne, president of Benefit Street Partners, former CEO of Deutsche Bank Securities and a BJJ black belt.

•Ken Gelman, founder of G-Funk Sports & Entertainment with 20-plus years in sports, marketing and media across fight sports organizations including Strikeforce, WWE, Shooto Brazil, Glory Sports International, Bellator MMA and more.

•Kenny Florian, three-time MMA world title challenger, host of UFC Tonight on Fox Sports 1, and owner of Florian Martial Arts Center (Brookline, MA) and Meraki BJJ (Santa Monica CA).

•Erik Owings, third-degree BJJ black belt, co-creator of the RUSHFIT training program and owner of New York City-based dojo Mushin Mixed Martial Arts.

“KASAI celebrates the skill and intensity that elite BJJ athletes bring to active competition today,” said Gracie, KASAI President. “We look forward to hosting events for the grappling community that profile pedigreed global talent, while unearthing next-generation prospects.”

KASAI, which adopts its name from the Japanese term for ‘a fire that rages uncontrollably,’ will host professional and amateur live events. Professional bouts will be contested at black-belt level under no-gi conditions. Events will adopt an exciting eight-man tournament structure with two round-robin brackets and fast action. The live tournaments will be broadcast via pay-per-view. Amateur tournaments will take place in no-gi attire, be open to male and female competitors, while spanning different age groups, weight classes and skill levels; white belt through black belt.

“We’re building this promotion with experienced minds from the worlds of martial arts, media production and event operations,” said Byrne, KASAI CEO. “There are exceptional competitors and a passionate martial arts audience out there, particularly on the East Coast.”

KASAI is targeting its first amateur and professional events for later this year, with KASAI’s first amateur tournament scheduled October 21. The promotion will also provide a steady pipeline of content and audience engagement initiatives year-round.

“KASAI is our effort to expand BJJ’s profile in both the spheres of sport and popular culture,” noted Florian. “While New York is unquestionably a hotbed for grappling talent in its own right, our aim is to present a product that reflects BJJ’s ability to transcend language and culture by entertaining a global audience.”

Miyao brings takes home another arm and another gold medal in IBJJF opens.

At the New York Open, held early this month, top-five IBJJF male João Miyao achieved a swift submission to climb to the top of the podium of the light featherweight division.

He faced Tadashi Takashima and dictated the pace. After trying for the back with the berimbolo, Miyao wound up on top. From there he worked to mount and transitioned into the winning armbar. You can watch it all unfold in this video.

Em ação no New York Open de Jiu-Jitsu, realizado no início deste mês, a fera João Miyao, que figura entre os cinco melhores faixas-pretas da IBJJF, tratou de finalizar sem demora para conquistar o título no peso-pluma.

Ele encarou Tadashi Takashima, e a disputa foi ditada pelo brasileiro. Depois de tentar as costas com o berimbolo, Miyao acabou por cima. João trabalhou do alto para montar e fez a transição para o armlock que lhe rendeu o ouro.

O primeiro a conquistar o cheque foi João Miyao (Cícero Costha), que bateu o rival de longa data Gianni Grippo (Alliance) na final do peso-pena.

Entre os médios, Otávio Sousa (GB) venceu Marcos Tinoco (Alliance). Já no pesadíssimo foi a vez de João Gabriel Rocha (Soulfighters) superar Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) para faturar o topo do pódio.

Entre as mulheres, a bicampeã mundial Dominyka Obelenyte faturou o superpesado, sem oponentes na divisão, para em seguida morder o ouro absoluto após vencer Laurah Elizabeth (GFTeam).

O UFC deixou nas mãos de McGregor a chance de ser o único campeão de duas categorias simultaneamente. Foto: Divulgação.

Valendo o cinturão peso leve da organização, Conor McGregor parte contra o campeão Eddie Alvarez, em duelo de cinco assaltos, no dia 12 de novembro, no famoso Madison Square Garden.

A surpresa maior fica por conta da manutenção do título peso-pena por parte de Conor McGregor. A luta foi divulgada, no site oficial do UFC, como “uma tentativa de McGregor de se tornar o primeiro campeão de duas categorias simultâneas, no maior evento da história do UFC.”

Outro detalhe interessante do processo fica por conta da luta que havia sido marcada para Alvarez, contra o casca-grossa Khabib Nurmagomedov. Após perder o prazo para assinar o contrato de luta, Alvarez ficou sem encarar o russo e agora terá McGregor em combate que deve render mais cifras ao campeão. Nurmagomedov, é claro, não gostou nada do combate.

McGregor (20v, 3d), já chegou ao Ultimate com status de estrela. Campeão de duas categorias no Cage Warriors, o irlandês enfileirou nomes como Chad Mendes, Diego Brandão e Dennis Siver, até ganhar a chance do cinturão e bater José Aldo em 13 segundos pelo cinturão dos penas. Após, encarou e foi finalizado por Nate Diaz, no mata-leão, em duelo nos meio-médios, resultado que foi vingado em agosto deste ano, após dar o troco e vencer na decisão dos jurados.

Alvarez (28v, 4d), ex-campeão do rival Bellator, não teve vida fácil no UFC. Após estrear com derrota para Donald Cerrone, venceu de forma apertada Gilbert Melendez e Anthony Pettis, ambos na decisão dividida. Contudo, ao receber a chance de lutar contra Rafael dos Anjos pelo cinturão peso leve, o americano fez seu trabalho e bateu o brasileiro por nocaute técnico, ainda no primeiro assalto.

Além da disputa entre McGregor e Alvares pelo cinturão peso leve, teremos na mesma noite as lutas de Tyron Woodley contra Stephen Thompson pelo cinturão dos meio-médios, e de Joanna Jędrzejczyk contra Karolina Kowalkiewicz pelo cinturão dos pesos-palhas.
