Cláudia do Val’s foot lock in the New York Open’s absolute

Eyeing the top of the IBJJF rankings, Cláudia do Val has again won double gold in the U.S. Fighting at the New York Spring Open, held last month, the De la Riva representative put on a show and concluded her run in the absolute division with a nice submission win.

After winning the heavyweight title by default, Claudia fought twice in the absolute. In the final, she was faced with Fiona M. Watson (Fight Club). Following an ineffective start that led both fighters to be penalized, Fiona made her move, attempting a foot a attack. What she hadn’t foreseen was Cláudia using Fiona’s movement against her and sinking a tournament-winning toe hold.

De olho no topo do ranking feminino na faixa-preta, Cláudia Do Val mordeu mais um título duplo nos EUA. Em ação no New York Spring Open, realizado em abril, a casca-grossa da equipe De La Riva fez bonito mais uma vez, e na disputa de peso aberto concluiu a conquista do ouro com bela finalização.

Após conquistar o título no peso pesado sem ter adversárias na chave, Claudia fez duas lutas no absoluto. Na final, ficou frente a frente com Fiona M. Watson (Fight Club) no duelo pelo título. Depois de um começo sem efetividade, no qual ambas as competidoras acabaram punidas, Fiona deu a sua cartada e tentou atacar no pé. O que Fiona não contava, porém, é que Cláudia usaria a movimentação da oponente para fazer a sua investica, com o mata-leão de pé que valeu o ouro.

Mahamed Aly wins 4 golds at New York Open

Last weekend saw another one of the IBJJF’s international open tournaments take place in the U.S. The traditional New York Open again was host to plenty of techinique in gi and no-go contests.

In the adults’s black belt section, it was Lloyd Irvin’s Mahamed Aly who stood head and shoulders above the competition, snatching all four gold medals attainable.

Mahamed first beat Oleksandr Karliychuk (Renzo Gracie Academy) for the gi ultra-heavyweight title. In the gi absolute he beat Marcos Tinoco (Alliance). Ditching the gi, he defeated Aaron Johnon (Unity JJ) for another ultra-heavyweight title. And then he reached the absolute final with his teammate DJ Jackson, who had won double medium heavyweight gold.

Claudia Doval (De La Riva) also went home with four gold medals. Bruno Frazatoo and JT Torres could also be found among the weekend’s no-gi champions.

Mahamed Aly fatura quatro ouros no New York Open de Jiu-Jitsu

Rolou no último final de semana, nos dias 15 e 16, mais um open internacional da IBJJF em terras americanas. O New York Open de Jiu-Jitsu, evento tradicional que costuma reunir grandes nomes da arte suave no tatame, mais uma vez apresentou um show de técnica, em disputas com e sem kimono.

Na categoria faixa-preta adulto, o nome da vez foi o do brasileiro Mahamed Aly. Astro da equipe Lloyd Irvin, a fera mordeu os quatro ouros que disputou no evento, com títulos no pesadíssimo e no absoluto, tanto de pano quanto sem paletó.

Mahamed começou sua maratona dourada ao bater o local Oleksandr Karliychuk (Renzo Gracie Academy) pelo título pesadíssimo de kimono. No absoluto ainda no pano, venceu o compatriota Marcos Tinoco (Alliance). Na disputa sem kimono, na divisão de peso, superou Aaron Johnon (Unity JJ). No absoluto, Mahamed fechou com o companheiro de equipe DJ Jackson, que já havia fatura o ouro meio-pesado tanto de kimono quanto sem.

Outros nomes tiveram destaque no torneio, como Claudia Doval (De La Riva), que também voltou para casa com quatro ouros na mochila, além de feras como Bruno Frazatto e JT Torres, também campeões sem kimono no torneio.

See how Johnny Tama passed João Miyao’s guard

In a great example of how not to give up, Ecuador’s Johnny Tama came back from behind to beat favorite João Miyao at the UAEJJF New York Open, held last weekend.

After tangling Tama in his legs, reaching the back and attempting the finish, Miyao spun to submit on the foot. Tama went along, and they both left the fight area. The ref interpreted it as running away from the submission and gave Miyao two points. With just a few seconds to react, Tama attacked. Miyao sat down to set up a guard, but, with a firm step, Tama arrived on the side and went for the north–south with a strong grip, stabilizing his foe and securing the decisive three points. Veja como Johnny Tama passou a guarda e venceu João Miyao no Jiu-Jitsu

Em um ótimo exemplo de como não se dar por vencido, o equatoriano Johnmy Tama superou um atraso no fim de sua luta para dar a volta por cima e vencer o favorito João Miyao no UAEJJF New York Open, realizado neste final de semana, no EUA.

Após embolar Tama em suas pernas, chegar nas costas e tentar a finalização, João girou para pegar no pé. Tama acompanhou e os dois foram para fora da área de luta. O árbitro considerou como fuga de finalização, e computou dois pontos para Miyao. Com poucos segundos para a reação, Johnny foi para cima com tudo. João sentou para fazer guarda, mas com um passo firme, Johnny chegou do lado e partiu para o norte-sul com pegada forte, estabilizando o arisco Miyao e garantindo os três pontos que lhe dariam a vitória.

Incansável competidor e terceiro lugar no ranking faixa-preta da IBJJF, João Miyao fez mais uma vítima no último final de semana, no New York Open.

Pelo ouro no peso-pluma da competição, o irmão de Paulo Miyao, também campeão no torneio, encarou Bruno Braz (Kimura BJJ) na final.

Bruno tentou mudar o curso da disputa, ao puxar primeiro. Porém, João mostrou que seu jogo por cima também está em dia, ao pressionar, chegar nas costas e atacar no braço, e assim finalizar no armlock.

NY Open: Tinoco, Diniz, irmãos Miyao e ex-UFC brilham no torneio de Jiu-Jitsu

Em um final de semana movimentado no mundo da arte suave, rolou nesse final de semana, em paralelo ao Rio Winter Open, o New York Summer Open de Jiu-Jitsu.

Com duelos com e sem kimono, o torneio reuniu centenas de atletas em busca do ouro internacional, e vários faixas-pretas conhecidos estavam na disputa.

No faixa-preta de kimono, Marcos Tinoco e Matheus Diniz fecharam o absoluto para a equipe Alliance. Tinoco e Diniz, campeões no peso meio-pesado e pesado, respectivamente, venceram Paulo Miyao e Felipinho Cesar na semi-finais para garantirem juntos a final do aberto. No absoluto feminino, melhor para Aarae Alexander (Lloyd Irvin), que venceu Samantha Faulhaber (Gracie Humaitá) e mordeu o título.

Outros destaques na disputa de kimono foram a dobradinha de Paulo e João Miyao com o título nas divisões pluma e pena, e para a atuação de Kurt Pellegrino, ex-atleta do UFC e faixa-preta de Marcelinho Garcia, que faturou o título peso pesado no Master 2.

Na disputa sem kimono, Matheus Diniz voltou a brilhar. Ele encarou Murilo Santana na final do absoluto, e conseguiu impor o seu jogo para sair com a vitória. Confira no vídeo abaixo.

Renomado cozinheiro, escritor e apresentador de TV, Anthony Bourdain, 59 anos, segue sua caminhada enquanto comum atleta de Jiu-Jitsu. Longe dos holofotes que está acostumado, Bourdain participou do New York Open, em busca de seu primeiro título na arte suave.

Ainda na faixa-azul, Bourdain se inscreveu na categoria de peso médio no master 5, e não decepcionou no seu combate. Ao puxar para a guarda e raspar, o aluno de Igor Gracie garantiu os dois pontos que lhe fariam campeão no torneio.

The IBJJF held the 2016 New York Spring Open this weekend at the City College, in Manhattan.

Many big names stopped by to display all their technique and competition drive.

In the two mos important divisions, Alliance Marcelo Garcia’s teammates Dillon Danis and Mansher Khera closed out the male adult black belt open class while Gustavo Dantas Jiu-Jitsu’s Sarah Black beat Megan Nevil for the female black belt absolute title.

Day 1 of the 2015 New York Summer Open is a wrap.

Alliance’s Matheus Diniz and Jonathan Satava closed out the black belt open class gi division.

Diniz (medium-heavy) and Satava (middle) also won their weight divisions.

Other champions in the black belt divisions included João Miyao (light-feather), Paulo Miyao (light), Aaron Johnson (heavy), Lincoln Pereira (super-heavy), Thomas MacMahon (ultraheavy).

In the teams competition, Alliance swept the first day with 272 pts., followed by Soul Fighters with 70 pts. and SAS with 58 pts.

NY Summer Open: register now before it reaches full capacity

The 2015 New York Summer Open is nearly reaching full capacity.

Scheduled July 18-19, the event will feature both gi and no-gi divisions.

Paulo and João Miyao, Jonathan Satava, Daniel Beleza, Francisco Iturralde, among others, are some of the big names already registered to compete.
