Os lutadores Jon Fitch, Nate Quarry e Cung Le anunciaram um processo judicial conjunto contra o UFC nessa terça, 16 de dezembro, em coletiva de imprensa realizada na cidade de San José, na Califórnia. Fitch não apareceu na coletiva, pois está cuidando da lesão que sofreu na luta contra Rousimar Toquinho no WSOF.

A ação diz que os atletas querem representar uma classe de profissionais atuais e antigos para atuar contra o monopólio do UFC no mercado do MMA.

Ainda sob contrato com a organização de Dana White, o vietnamita Le destrinchou os motivos que o levaram a participar do processo contra o Ultimate.

“Tem sido uma longa estrada e estou apenas honrado em fazer parte desse processo contra o UFC pelos lutadores do passado, do presente e do futuro. Os lutadores futuros terão uma melhor situação e estou feliz por fazer parte desse movimento”, disse o atleta.

Participante do TUF 1 e aposentado do MMA, Nate Quarry também deu a palavra na coletiva e fez críticas ao evento.

“Se nós não trouxermos isso à tona agora, nós nunca vamos conseguir mudar esse mundo que conhecemos. Recebo mensagens de diversos lutadores, que infelizmente não posso revelar, mas esses fatos são verdadeiros. O UFC está tomando conta de toda a indústria e diz que é a nova religião do mundo, ditando como as coisas devem ser. Nós merecemos nosso mercado livre para competir, de acordo com os seus valores. Merecemos também ter o controle sobre a nossa carreira para decidir aonde vamos, e como vamos”, contou Quarry.

Em nota oficial, a organização do UFC respondeu e explicou como vai se defender das acusações: “O UFC está ciente da ação registrada hoje, mas ainda não recebeu, nem teve a oportunidade de analisar o documento. O UFC vai se defender vigorosamente e às suas práticas de negócios”.

He scored five back-to-back tapout wins in the UFC (against Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason MacDonald, Nate Quarry and Chael Sonnen), but life is no walk in the park for anybody. A Jiu-Jitsu black belt with smooth moves, Demian Maia has now had to cut weight after a string of defeats and will be making his welterweight debut this Saturday at UFC 148.

“It’s funny because early in my career as a UFC middleweight I’d usually walk around at around 85kg, fight at 83.9 kg. Going back to 85 kg and then having to drop to 77 kg reminded me how having extra weight doesn’t necessarily mean I’m stronger. I feel quicker and don’t feel I have any issues where strength is concerned, so I feel that even though I had a hard time dropping weight, I did the right thing,” Demian is quoted as saying on the UFC website.

The São Paulo native will be taking on Korea’s Dong Hyun Kim, who has but a single blemish on his record: a knockout loss to Carlos Condit, the owner of the divisional interim belt.

“Like any good fighter, he presents a number of challenges and difficulties,” says Demian in the article. “I see Kim as a solid competitor, and for the level he reached in judo, he has certainly shown the level of dedication and discipline he has. He’s a complete fighter, is aggressive, and has a solid background. It’s an important fight for the both of us; it’s a fight that will be a boon to whoever wins it,” wagers the former Brazilian national Jiu-Jitsu champion.

“Moving to the welterweight division is both a blessing and a curse, in a way. It’s a blessing because every athlete wants to have the means to make it to the top of their sport, and it’s a curse because any welterweight fighter will have to walk on burning coals to get past Carlos Condit, Rory McDonald, Martin Kampmann, Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger, Josh Koshcheck and the rest, until getting a shot at Georges St-Pierre,” says the Fabio Gurgel black belt.

“I’m working hard with my team for this fight. I know what it means, and I’m really glad to be a part of UFC 148. I’m going to give it my best, and I truly hope that it’s a fight that pleases the fans and will be the start of a new march, step by step,” he says in closing.

Ele emplacou cinco finalizações seguidas no UFC (Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason McDonald, Nate Quarry, e Chael Sonnen), mas a vida não é fácil para ninguém. Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu com estilo suave, Demian Maia precisou baixar de peso após sucessivas derrotas e estreia no peso meio-médio neste sábado, no UFC 148.

“É engraçado, porque no começo da minha carreira, como peso médio no UFC, eu geralmente andava com 85kg ou algo assim, e lutava com 83,9kg. Voltar aos 85 kg e ter de baixar para 77kg me faz lembrar que o peso extra não significa necessariamente mais força para mim. Eu me sinto mais rápido, e não sinto nenhum problema quanto à minha força, então acredito que mesmo sendo difícil perder peso, foi a coisa certa a fazer”, disse Demian, no site do UFC.

O paulista enfrenta o coreano Dong Hyun Kim, que tem apenas uma derrota na carreira: para Carlos Condit, dono do cinturão interino da categoria.

“Como qualquer lutador bom, ele apresenta vários desafios e dificuldades”, diz Demian. “Vejo o Kim como um competidor sólido, e para alguém estar no nível que ele estava como judoca, certamente mostra o comprometimento e disciplina que ele tem. Ele é um cara completo, agressivo e com uma boa base. É uma luta importante para nós dois, é uma luta que irá erguer quem quer que vença”, aposta o campeão brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu.

“Ir para a divisão dos meio-médios é uma benção e uma maldição, de certa forma. Uma benção porque todo atleta quer ter meios de chegar ao topo do esporte, e uma maldição porque qualquer lutador com 77kg vai ter de andar em cima de brasa para passar por Carlos Condit, Rory McDonald, Martin Kampmann, Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberguer, Josh Koscheck, entre outros, até conseguir uma chance contra Georges St-Pierre”, comentou o faixa-preta de Fabio Gurgel.

“Estou trabalhando duro com minha equipe para esta luta, eu sei o que ela significa, e estou muito feliz em fazer parte do UFC 148. Vou dar meu melhor e realmente espero que seja uma luta que agrade os fãs, e o começo para uma nova caminhada, passo a passo”, concluiu.

Trainer of Gabriel Gonzaga and founder of Team Link, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Marco Alvan will see some action of his own. The challenge, against UFC fighter Jorge Rivera, will be in a special submission grappling matchup at New England Grappling Championship. The event is set for February 6 in Rhode Island.

“I’m a Jiu-Jitsu fan. I love this sport and believe it’s the most complete martial art. I hope to give the fans a Jiu-Jitsu show. May we see the essence of the style, which is to end the fight with a submission,” Alvan told MMAWeekly.

“Jorge is a reference as a fighter and a person. I have a lot of respect for him and it’s an honor to compete against him. I hope to make it a good dispute,” adds the trainer, who has been living in the United States since 2001.

To Rivera, win or lose, what is important is that the showdown will serve as preparation for his next fight, as he is set to face Nate Quarry at UFC Fight Night 21, on March 31.
