In the recent history of the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, not too many winners of the brown belt absolute didn’t go on to become superstars of the sport.

In the galley of former brown belt kings, perhaps the sternest gateway to black belt, are Daniel Gracie (1996), Claudio Moreno (1997), Murilo Rupp (1998), Aurélio Fernandes (1999), Marcio Pé de Pano (2000), Alex Paes (2001), Roger Gracie (2002), Ronaldo Jacaré (2003), André Galvão (2004), Vinny Magalhães (2005), Antonio Braga Neto (2006), Otavio Sousa (2007), Rodolfo Vieira (2008), Léo Nogueira (2009), Marcus Bochecha (2010) and Alexander Trans (2011).

This year, the grand champion was superheavyweight João Gabriel Rocha, 20, of team Soul Fighters, who thanks to his experience at brown belt, took his divisional and open weight titles with certain ease, in the view of his BJJ professor, Leandro “Tatu” Escobar. The secret, to the teacher as well as the athlete, was his consistency in the academy and not letting sloth and excuses get in the way of his training.

“João has been doing Jiu-Jitsu since he was four years old and almost never missed a class. At Soul Fighter in Rio we hold competition-team training every day, and sometimes he trains twice on the same day, plus conditioning,” said Leandro. “His father always invested a lot in his career. João practiced judo at Flavio Canto’s Instituto Reação, did wrestling with the Brazilian national team, and he always trained more than the other kids his age.”

At the June World Championship in Long Beach, California, João took out two beasts in the finals: Felipe “Preguiça” Pena in the absolute and Luke Costello at weight, both from team Gracie Barra.

“The interesting part is that just gets more motivated with every trip to the top of the podium. His sights are always set on the top, and because of it he always wants to train more and more; he understands that his career hasn’t even begun. And he grows a lot at each competition. Every time I see him fight I feel he’s become a better and more mature competitor. It’s a process of evolution. When he gets to black belt he’ll do awesome at the top level. His strength is that he never tires—not because he’s young, but because he’s so dedicated. Just like at the Pan and the Brazilian Nationals, he did a good job of physical conditioning with Ítalo, which made him stand out all the more.”

Like any good teacher, Tatu can spot the chinks in his pupil’s armor. “His biggest defect is his lack of concentration. I have to always get on him about taking things seriously, paying attention to some of the details.”

Keen as he is to the crowd of superchampions at brown belt, would he say that winning a brown belt absolute at the Worlds is as or more difficult than scoring gold at black belt?

To Leandro Tatu, black belt is still up a level. “I don’t feel it’s the same level of difficulty, even though winning it is quite an achievement, mainly in the case of João, who has been a cut above the rest at brown belt for some time now. Just look at how the only matches he’s ever lost in this division were always dubious, in my opinion. In other words, he’s always been way ahead of most of the competitors. But now his time has come, and at the end of this year we’ll put him to the test, because he’s going to compete in Rio at the Copa Pódio Heavyweight Grand Prix—only black belt beasts, like Rodolfo, Bochecha and the rest,” said the teacher in closing.

Na história recente dos Mundiais de Jiu-Jitsu, poucos campeões absolutos na faixa-marrom não se tornaram superastros do esporte.

Na galeria de ex-reis da marrom, talvez a porta de entrada mais árdua para a faixa-preta, estão Daniel Gracie (1996), Claudio Moreno (1997), Murilo Rupp (1998), Aurélio Fernandes (1999), Marcio Pé de Pano (2000), Alex Paes (2001), Roger Gracie (2002), Ronaldo Jacaré (2003), André Galvão (2004), Vinny Magalhães (2005), Antonio Braga Neto (2006), Otavio Sousa (2007), Rodolfo Vieira (2008), Léo Nogueira (2009), Marcus Bochecha (2010) e Alexander Trans (2011).

Este ano, o gande campeão foi o superpesado João Gabriel Rocha (Soul Fighters), 20 anos, que graças a sua experência na marrom, venceu o peso e o absoluto até com certa facilidade, na visão de seu professor, Leandro Escobar, o Tatu. O segredo, para o professor e o atleta, foi a consistência na academia e não dar bola para a preguiça e outras desculpas para faltar o treino.

“O João treina Jiu-Jitsu desde os 4 anos de idade, e quase não falta. Na Soul Fighters, no Rio, temos treino para a equipe de competição todos os dias, e às vezes ele faz dois treino por dia, mais a preparação”, disse Leandro.“O pai dele sempre investiu muito na carreira dele. João já treinou judô no Instituto Reação, do Flávio Canto, fez aulas de wrestling com a seleção brasileira, e sempre treinou mais que os garotos da idade dele”.

No último Mundial em Long Beach, em junho, João derrotou duas feras nas finais: Felipe “Preguiça” Pena, no absoluto, e Luke Costello no peso, ambos da Gracie Barra.

“O interessante é que o João só se motiva mais a cada vez que se vê no alto do pódio. Ele mira sempre o topo, e para isso sempre quer treinar mais e mais, compreende que sua carreira nem começou ainda. E ele cresce muito nas competições. Cada vez que o vejo lutar, sinto que ele está melhor e mais maduro como competidor. É um processo de evolução, ele vai chegar à faixa-preta arrebentando no nível dos tops. Seu ponto forte é ser incansável, não só por ser jovem, mais por ser muito dedicado. Assim como no Pan e no Brasileiro, ele se preparou muito bem com o Ítalo na parte física, aí sobressaiu com mais facilidade”.

Como todo bom professor, Tatu enxerga falhas no pupilo. “Seu maior defeito é a falta de concentração. Tenho de estar sempre em cima cobrando seriedade, chamando atenção para alguns detalhes”.

De olho na galeria de supercampeões da marrom, dá para afirmar que vencer o absoluto marrom é hoje tão ou mais difícil que uma medalha de ouro na faixa-preta no Mundial?

Para Leandro Tatu, a faixa-preta ainda é um nível acima. “Acho que o nível de dificuldade não é o mesmo, apesar de ser um feito e tanto. Principalmente no caso do João, que estava sobrando na faixa-marrom há um tempo. Basta ver que as lutas que ele perdeu nessa divisão foram sempre duvidosas, na minha opinião, ou seja, ele estava um nível acima da ampla maioria de competidores. Mas agora chegou a hora, e no fim deste ano vamos testá-lo, pois ele vai disputar aqui no Rio o GP dos Pesos Pesados da Copa Pódio, só com os feras da faixa-preta, como Rodolfo, Bochecha e outros”, encerra o professor.

Nos últimos anos, quando o MMA tomou conta das academias de Jiu-Jitsu, muitos professores foram deixando as grandes equipes e focaram em suas próprias academias e equipes.

Este foi o caso dos professors Zé Marcello, Rafael Haubert, Fernando Paradeda, Murilo Rupp, Rodrigo Antunes, Douglas Santos e Sergio Vita, que em dezembro de 2010 fundaram uma nova equipe. Trata-se da Icon Jiu-Jitsu Team, que também conta com Zé Mario Sperry (foto) e Walter Mattos como mestres-conselheiros.

“Depois de treinar na Carlson Gracie e na BTT, que se tornou uma equipe de MMA, ficamos perdidos. Foquei meu esforço na Sul Jiu-Jitsu, mas quase sempre meus alunos lutavam com os alunos dos meus amigos, que volta e meia treinavam juntos, por conta do intercâmbio que sempre fizemos” diz Fernando Paradeda, um dos líderes do time. “Nós, professores, nos conhecemos desde a faixa-branca e sempre tive na lembrança os treinos e campeonatos que lutavámos juntos”.

“Nos campeonatos mais recentes, nossas equipes sentavam juntas nas arquibancadas. Não tinha a menor dúvida que precisávamos nos unir. Faltava alguém para dar o pontapé inicial”, concorda Rafael Haubert, que vive na ponte-aérea Emirados-Espanha.

Zé Marcello, natural de Niterói e desde 2006 radicado na Inglaterra foi o ponto de ligação entre os professores: “Conheço todos há muito tempo, sempre me dei bem com todo mundo. Estamos fisicamente separados, mas há uma identificação muito grande entre a gente, desde a forma como damos aula, passando pelo jeito que tratamos nossos alunos. E volta e meia estamos nos visitando. Mesmo assim, para começarmos com tudo certo, demoramos um ano pra formalizar a equipe”.

O lema da Icon Jiu-Jitsu Team é baseado no pensamento do industrial Henry Ford: “Reunir-se é um começo, permanecer juntos é um progresso, e trabalhar juntos é um sucesso.”

“A Icon vai entrar em competições de nivel internacional disputando com as melhores academias do mundo”, garante Paradeda.

A estreia da equipe será no Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu, já com 130 atletas.

In recent years, when MMA took over at Jiu-Jitsu academies, a lot of teachers left the big teams to focus on their own academies and teams.

That was the case with teachers Zé Marcello, Rafael Haubert, Fernando Paradeda, Murilo Rupp, Rodrigo Antunes. Douglas Santos, and Sergio Vita, who in December 2010 founded a new team. That team is called Icon Jiu-Jitsu Team, which also includes Zé Mario Sperry (pictured) and Walter Mattos as Master-consultants.

“After training at Carlson Gracie and BTT, which became an MMA team, we were lost. I focused all my efforts on Sul Jiu-Jitsu, but my students almost always would end up my friends’ students, who would often train with us because of the exchanges we would do,” says Fernando Paradeda, one of the team leaders. “We teachers met when we were still white belts and we always remembered the championships we would compete at together.”

“At more recent championships, our teams would sit togher on the stands. There was no doubt we needed to unite. We just needed someone to kick it off,” agrees Rafael Haubert, who is constantly making the trip between the United Arab Emirates and Spain.

Zé Marcello, who is originally from Niterói, Brazil, and has been living in England since 2006, was the catalyst in bringing the teachers together: “I’ve known all of them for a really long time, I always got along well with everyone. We are physically apart, but we identify a great deal with each other, from the way we teach class to how we treat our students. And every now and again we pay each other visits. Even so, so we would start on the right foot, it took us a year to formally launch our team.”

Icon Jiu-Jitsu Team’s theme is based on the thinking of industrialist Henry Ford: “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”

“Icon will enter international-level competitions competing against the best academies in the world,” guarantees Paradeda.

The team will make its competition debut at the European Open, taking 130 athletes right off the bat.

Fazia muito tempo que eu não despertava na manhã de Natal com uma pequena, mas grata surpresa. Nem me dei ao trabalho de levantar da cama e fui conferindo os carinhosos e-mails dos amigos pelo telefone. Ficamos até as 4 da manhã eu e mais cinco professores do Emirates Team discutindo vários assuntos, todos, inevitavelmente, relacionados ao Jiu-Jitsu. Dentre os numerosos e-mails, um me contagiou mais. Após umas pequenas frases sobre Natal e lembranças à família, meu ex-aluno Dimitri Pilaris, hoje residente em Santa Catarina, encerra assim:

“Tenho gratidão por ti, meu primeiro professor de Jiu-Jitsu. Não me tornei campeão nos tatames, mas levarei os ensinamentos comigo para a vida. Muito obrigado”

Num pequeno instante, lembrei das primeiras aulas ministradas ao Dimi, lá no Rio Grande do Sul. Ele devia ter apenas 13 anos. Lembro que ainda era baixo pra idade, cheio de ímpeto e, como todo pré-adolescente, não sabia o que queria da vida. Quem trabalha com crianças e adolescentes sabe como o Jiu-Jitsu pode ser um instrumento formador de caráter e como as nossas palavras podem ecoar na vida desses garotos. Dimi, como dezenas de outros, seguiu seu caminho, mudou de estado, mas continuou vivendo o estilo de vida que lhe foi proposto. Seu e-mail veio reforçar a idéia da importância do papel de professor.

Imediatamente me transportei para anos antes. Ainda faixa-branca, fui utilizado como sparring dos amigos Luiz Brito e Murilo Rupp, que iriam estrear no vale-tudo, como era chamado o MMA na época. Em nosso primeiro treino, meu mestre, Zé Mário Sperry, foi bem claro: “Ensinar vocês a golpear alguém é fácil, estão aqui para aprender a apanhar.”

Assim como Dimi levou meus ensinamentos para o dia-a-dia, eu levei os dos meus mestres também. Aprendi a apanhar, não só no dojô. Aprendi a receber os golpes da vida. Estes são, certamente, os mais dolorosos. É neste grande torneio chamado “vida” que se sofre as maiores derrotas. A vitória consiste em viver e tirar proveito dos ensinamentos que o revés nos dá.

Se conseguir levar os ensinamentos do Jiu-Jitsu para fora dos dojôs, pode ter certeza, vai ser um faixa-preta da vida, que é o que realmente importa no fim das contas.

O ano está terminando, talvez não tenha sido um período muito bom para alguns, mas todos devem ter aprendido a “apanhar” mais um pouco. No próximo ano, estaremos mais condicionados para partir ao próximo round.

It’s been ages since I haven’t woken up Christmas morning to some small but welcome surprise. I didn’t even bother to get out of bed and went straight to checking emails from friends on my cell phone. Myself and five other teachers on Emirates Team had stayed up until four in the morning discussing a number of topics, all, inevitably, Jiu-Jitsu related. Of the numerous emails, there was one that touched me most. Following a few short phrases about Christmas and family well-wishes, my former student Dimitri Pilaris, now a resident of Santa Catarina, wrapped up his message like this:

“I’m grateful to you, my first Jiu-Jitsu teacher. I didn’t end up becoming a champion on the mat, but I will carry your teachings with me for the rest of my life. Thank you so much.”

Memories of the first classes I taught to Dimi flashed through my head, back in Rio Grande do Sul. He must have been just thirteen years old. I remember how he was short for his age, full of verve and, like all early teens, he didn’t know what he wanted in life. Anyone who works with kids and teenagers knows how Jiu-Jitsu can be an instrument for forming character and how our words echo in the lives of these youths. Dimi, like dozens of others, followed his course, moved to a different state, but continued living the lifestyle proposed to him. His email came to reinforce my idea about the importance of the role of teacher.

I immediately transported myself back a few years. Still a white belt, I was used as a sparring partner for my friends Luiz Brito and Murilo Rupp, who were going to make their debuts in vale-tudo, as MMA was called in those days. During our first sparring session, my master, Zé Mário Sperry, made himself really clear: “Teaching you guys to hit someone is easy, I’m here to teach you to get hit.”

Just as Dimi carried my teachings with him into daily life, I carried with me those of my masters. I learned to take knocks, and not just in the dojo. I learned to take the hard knocks of life. Those are certainly the most painful ones. It’s in this great tournament called “life” that we suffer the most bitter defeats. Victory consists of living and making the most of the lessons we derive from our setbacks.

If you manage to take Jiu-Jitsu’s teachings with you away for the mats, you can be sure you will be a black belt in life, which in the end is what really matters.

The year is coming to a close. Perhaps it hasn’t been the best of times for some, but everyone must have gotten a bit better at “taking knocks.” Next year we’ll be in better shape heading into the next round.
