Parts where violence and fighting is prevalent, the actors train to make it look as realistic as possible. When Tom Cruise took on the role in Oblivion last year he even triangle choked himself to sleep.

In the new movie John Wick, Keanue Reeves and cast learn a multitude of martial arts including Jiu-Jitsu. But how likely are we to see real Jiu-Jitsu being used correctly in these types of films? Actress Adrianne Palicki speaks about using body weight to describe the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu that are being applied to her scenes.

Do you think that Jiu-Jitsu is misrepresented in Hollywood or do you believe that if trained specifically, like in the example of drilling, actors can portray moves correctly?

Franjinha is currently on location in Montreal, Canada working with actor Paul Walker (Fast and the Furious movie series) as the fight scene coordinator in his upcoming movie Brick Mansions.

Paul has been a Jiu-Jitsu student for four years and will now have the opportunity to display his skills on the big screen as an undercover cop who tries to take down a ruthless crime lord.

With Franjinha’s guidance Paul’s goal is to help display the beautiful martial art of Jiu-Jitsu around the world. Paul says, “ I hope this is just the beginning. I plan to add BJJ in my future movies and help to put the name of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu out there. BJJ has helped me so much lately and I really fell in love with it, mainly through seeing Franjinha’s own passion for it. His passion for Jiu-Jitsu is so contagious that if you learn from him you pretty much fall in love with it.”

Brick Mansions is scheduled for release in 2014.

If you’ve been doing a good job of managing your time and made regular trips to the cinema, you’re surely among the dozens of millions of movie-goers who’ve seen this epic scene, where Scarlett Johansson submits a wise-cracker in the blockbuster movie “Iron Man 2”.

In preparing for her role as a sensual spy and skilled scrapper, Scarlett took to training boxing, pro-wrestling (with the help of cables for the insane flying moves), and of course MMA and Jiu-Jitsu—as it turns out, a martial art that the leading man of the movie, Robert Downey Jr., has been an enthusiast of ever since starring in “Sherlock Holmes.”

DOUBLE ATTACK IN THE RING

It happens that the GRACIEMAG.com team, having been toiling away to revamp the site to better serve you, didn’t pay that much attention to the 2010 movie based on the popular comic book character. We dropped the ball, while the heart throb landed a sweet  double attack, trapping the arm and pressuring the neck—great stuff.

There’s always time to redeem ourselves and make right, though, as the wise masters teach us.

At the 55-second mark of the video below, Scarlett pulls off the aforementioned sub. The next video down shows the bombshell in training.

“We shot the fight scenes in four days, but we spent months training for it,” recalled Scarlett at the time. “She was a strong and independent character, who reminded us women that we don’t have to always be fragile, that it’s nice to kick people’s butts every now and again. I loved it.”

If the challenge issued by Chael Sonnen comes to pass and the American happens to defeat the Brazilian and capture the UFC middleweight belt, current champ Anderson Silva won’t be left twiddling his thumbs. According to website “Último Segundo,” Anderson has now begun training to become a voice-over artist for cartoons.

Yesterday at Rio de Janeiro’s Cine Odeon movie house, award-winning documentary “Anderson Silva: Like Water” premiered at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, with the champion attending the event, in the company of his wife, Dayane, and five sons: Kaory, Gabriel, Kalyl, Kauana and João Vitor – not to mention five stocky bodyguards. All to protect the star, whose popularity just keeps shooting through the roof and whose face features on the cover of the UFC video game and who was invited by Canadian popstar Justin Bieber to attend his concert in Rio, among other appearances.

“There’s still much for me to do in fighting but my dream is to one day be an actor,” said Silva, admitting that he might take on the challenge of doing voice-overs for cartoons. “This is all very knew to me, I’ll have to prepare. But I think it’s all about training to do it. I’ll try, I’ll train for it,” said the fighter in his trademark voice.

The movie “Anderson Silva: Like Water” will be shown across Brazil but the opening date hasn’t yet been set.

The USA can now look forward to the end-of-the-year premier of full-length movie “Warrior” (with cameos from Nathan Marquardt, Yves Edwards and Roan Jucão!), where two brothers dispute a title belt (see below).

Now around here, news about MMA and Jiu-Jitsu movies is breaking every week.

There are already projects underway to produce a movie about Rickson, one on Minotauro, and recently the director of the movie “Jean Charles”, Henrique Goldman, said he is getting ready to produce “O Cara” (“The Man”), to be shot in Brazil, the USA and Japan. The movie will be a work of fiction, “but anchored in reality,” Henrique is quoted as saying in the “Gente Boa” column of O Globo newspaper. “These guys have amazing life stories – stories of overcoming hardships,” he added.

It was in Canada, though, that the first feature film of this new genre made some noise, at the documentary festival Toronto Hot Docs. “Fightville” tells the tale of the hard lives led by athletes who may never make it to stardom, but live and breathe fighting. Yesterday, making first contact with GRACIEMAG.com in order to collect information about the fighter, the producer remarked: “Besides his achievements as a fighter, it’s incredible to me how it’s been impossible to find someone who doesn’t like the guy. Even his opponents seem to respect him, It’s unbelievable.”

That wasn’t always the case. When Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was still an unknown martial art, in the pre-UFC days, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover starred in the first movie to mention our Jiu-Jitsu, “Lethal Weapon,” in 1987.

Early in the full-length movie, fifty-something-year-old officer Roger Murtaugh implores loose cannon Martin Riggs to settle a dispute through conversation alone. “No guns, no Jiu-Jitsu!” he barks. It didn’t do much good. But it’s at the end of the story that Jiu-Jitsu shines, in a showdown between Mel Gibson and a mercenary villain played by Gary Busey.

In a tribute to the Pan Kids tournament, we dug up scenes from the “first meeting”! Between a white ninja and a black ninja, action figures every kid in Brazil in the 1980’s wanted to have.

Spotlight on the fight’s moral lesson, where the defeated becomes the good guy and the haughty winner turns into the sinister villain… Learn from them, kids!

One of the most entertaining troublemakers of modern cinema, Mr. Nielsen had one characteristic in common with elderly Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. He knew how to age well, without losing his sense of humor or vitality.

The curious part is that in both movies the main characters use Jiu-Jitsu positions in confrontation situations. In “Avatar”, the blue creature sinks a perfect triangle to subdue one of the giant birds that serve as a means of transport.

Now in “The Hurt Locker”, sergeant and former Ranger William James (Jeremy Renner) mounts his colleague to immobilize him. The mount, though, is performed in a less than usual manner, resting his knees on Sergeant Sanborn’s (Anthony Mackie) biceps, opening the way for James to slap his friend in the face.

GRACIEMAG.com tracked down Jiu-Jitsu master and movie aficionado Carlos Gracie Jr. to evaluate the effectiveness of the bomb disarmer’s mount:

“That mount only works with laymen, in horseplay or, like in the film, when the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing. If you try that in real life or put both knees on the arms of an experienced fighter, it’s easy for the guy on bottom to push the opponent on top in the direction his head is pointing, slide out from under and escape the mount on the other side,” teaches the founder of Gracie Barra.
