O card do próximo Strikeforce, no próximo dia 29, está recheado de candidatos à finalização mais bonita da noite.

Na luta principal, Gilbert Melendez representa o Jiu-Jitsu ensinado por seu professor Cesar Gracie. Na luta feminina, Cat Zingano disputa com Amanda Nunes quem tem mais chão, força e técnica.

Nas demais lutas, só fera: Guto Inocente, Jorge Gurgel, Jorge Santiago, Yuri Villefort… Duro de escolher quem será o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu mais comentado ao final.

Entre todos eles, há um campeão da arte suave que faz sua estreia do alto de uma longa carreira.

Com 23 vitórias em 29 combates, o amazonense Adriano Martins faz sua estreia no Strikeforce em Sacramento após anos de batalhas de kimono no Tijuca, e nos ringues do Jungle Fight.

Principal representante da Top Life, em Manaus, Adriano encara Isaac Vallie-Flagg e defende os treinos no calor amazônico. “Não preciso estar lá fora passando por dificuldades, porque sei que nosso Estado tem como me ajudar, apoiando não só eu como outros atletas daqui” disse ele ao colaborador Arthur Castro. Adriano conta com o apoio de grandes empresas amazonenses.

Adriano fechou um contrato de quatro lutas com o Strikeforce, e a primeira é contra este americano de 13 triunfos em 17 lutas – Isaac vem de vitória sobre Gesias Cavalcante, por decisão dividida dos jurados.

O brasileiro embarca sábado para os Estados Unidos com sua equipe e lá finaliza o processo de perda de peso. “Essa é a parte mais difícil, pois preciso perder 16kg para bater 70 um dia antes do show. Para obter sucesso  na carreira internacional, estou me espelharndo em lutadores renomados como meu conterrâneo José Aldo, Anderson Silva e Vitor Belfort “, comentou.

Também entre os leves, Gilbert Melendez e Pat Healy se engalfinham pelo título.

Já Cat Zingano é vista como uma das grandes estrelas da noite.

“Ela tem toneladas de talento, e agora está chegando ao Strikeforce para se testar contra as melhores. Com uma sólida carreira no wrestling e sua própria escola de Jiu-Jitsu, no Colorado, ela é uma lutadora completa, que representa uma ameaça a todas as concorrentes do peso-galo”, disse o produtor Scott Coker ao MMAJunkie.com.

The card for the next Strikeforce show, coming up on the 29th, is packed with candidates for the “Submission of the Night” award.

In the main event, Gilbert Melendez will be carrying the flag of his Jiu-Jitsu teacher Cesar Gracie. In the female fight, Cat Zingano and Amanda Nunes will lock horns to see who’s got more grappling, skill and technique.

The rest of the card is also studded with stalwart fighters: Guto Inocente, Jorge Gurgel, Jorge Santiago… Predicting the Jiu-Jitsu black belt to make the most noise is a tough pick.

Among them, one gentle-art whiz will be making his promotional debut after a lengthy career.

With 23 wins in 29 fights, Amazonas State native Adriano Martins will be making his Strikeforce debut in Sacramento, California, after years of gi-clad combat at the Tijuca Tennis Club, as well as MMA action in his native Brazil at events like Jungle Fight.

The biggest name out of Top Life team, Adriano will be taking on Isaac Vallie-Flagg to prove the training in the equatorial heat of his home is all he needs. “I don’t need to be abroad going through a rough time, because I know our state can help me, backing not just me but other athletes from these parts,” he told our contributor Arthur Castro. Adriano is sponsored by a number of big companies from the state of Amazonas.

Adriano sealed a four-fight deal with Strikeforce, of which this fight against Isaac – an American with 13 wins in 17 fights, as well as a split decision win over Gesias Cavalcante – is the first.

The Brazilian and his team will be taking off for the United States this Saturday. There, he will go through the final process of shedding weight. “That’s the toughest part, because I have to lose 16 kg [35 lbs] to make 70 one day before the show. To achieve success in my international career I’m modeling myself on renowned fighters from my homeland like José Aldo, Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort,” he said.

The show will also feature a lightweight title fight, with Gilbert Melendez defending his crown against Pat Healy.

Now Cat Zingano is also being touted as one of the big stars of the night.

“She’s got tons of talent, and now she’s arriving at Strikeforce to test herself against the best. With a solid wrestling career and her own Jiu-Jitsu school in Colorado, she’s a complete fighter who’s a threat to all the competition at bantamweight,” promotional president Scott Coker told the MMAJunkie.com website.

The Strikeforce promotion put on a memorable evening in Portland, Oregon, thanks to the two title fights; a handful of ex-UFC fighters; a win from Ryan Couture, the son of a legend; and the Gracie on the card. In the audience, stars like MC Hammer brightened up the night.

Roger Gracie made his debut as a middleweight and demonstrated confidence, after suffering a knockout at the hands of King Mo and bidding farewell to the light heavyweight division. Having done a stint training with Lyoto Machida at Black House in Los Angeles, Roger displayed his newfound skill at slipping punches and safely closed the distance on Keith Jardine to take him to the ground.

With exception to the third round, Roger managed to wrestle his opponent to the ground and masterfully control the former UFC fighter throughout. Round one saw him mount and rain punches and elbows down on Jardine’s face, opening up gashes in the process. The Gracie looked set to bring a close to the bout in the final seconds, but the bell cut short his attack.

In the scond round, Roger got his chin out of harm’s way in the nick of time and again drug Jardine down. There, the Gracie saw his best shot at a decisive win, mounting, sinking his hooks, then a figure-four around the waist, before mounting and launching an arm-and-neck-choke assault. Again the bell sounded, and the five minutes of the round were not enough to conclude the encounter.

In the third and final round, with both fighters showing fatigue, Roger only managed to keep Jardine at a distance with jabs and push kicks, biding his time till the final bell.

“I’m glad I got to put my game to practice. I took him to the ground and controlled him but he was slippery from so much blood and knew how to hang on. I kind of wore out in the third round, but I think I left a few too many kilos to lose till the last minute, and that resulted in my fatiguing at the end,” explained Roger while still in the gray cage. “But I’m satisfied; every time I step into the ring to represent Jiu-Jitsu and my family makes me happy.”

When it was all over, the score cards came in deeming the three-time absolute world champion of Jiu-Jitsu the victor by unanimous decision.

“It’s a really important result for me, especially because I’m coming off a knockout loss. Keith’s a tough guy who’s beaten a lot of good guys before. I hope to tire less next time around. I was affected some by the weight-cut. That’s the biggest lesson for me in this fight—cutting weight properly and smoothly. It was good that he got tired too, though,” remarked Roger.

In the rest of the card, former UFC star Nate Marquardt had his work cut out for him in overcoming a game Tyron Woodley and his mother, who cheered the fighter on from start to finish. Following a three-round, back-and-forth standup firefight, the fourth frame saw Marquardt land two elbows that unseated Woodley, and a hook sealed the deal.

Now in the evening’s main event, Luke Rockhold got the better of Tim Kennedy for five rounds and took the unanimous decision. Check out the complete results:

Foi uma noite memorável para o Strikeforce em Portland, Oregon, graças a um card com duas disputas de cinturões, alguns tantos ex-lutadores do UFC, uma (boa) luta de Ryan Couture, filho da lenda, e ainda um Gracie no card. Na plateia, astros como MC Hammer enfeitavam a noite.

Roger Gracie estreou no peso médio (até 84kg) e mostrou confiança, ele que estava vindo de um nocaute no peso meio-pesado, pelos punhos de King Mo. Após uma série de treinos com Lyoto Machida na Black House, em Los Angeles, Roger apresentou boas esquivas e investidas com segurança para colar em Keith Jardine e botar para baixo.

Com exceção do terceiro assalto, Roger conseguiu derrubar e exercer amplo domínio no ex-lutador do UFC. Na primeira parcial, montou e desceu os murros e cotovelos no oponente, abrindo cortes no rosto de Jardine. O Gracie partiu para definir nos últimos segundos, mas o gongo soou sem a finalização.

No segundo assalto, Roger tirou o queixo da reta na hora certa e levou Jardine novamente para baixo. Foi a melhor chance do Gracie na luta, quando ele montou, botou os ganchos, encaixou o triângulo nas costas, voltou a montar e tentou o katagatame. Novamente, na última hora o gongo soou, e os cinco minutos não foram suficientes para o bote certeiro.

No terceiro e último assalto, com ambos cansados, Roger apenas manteve Jardine à distância com jabs e chutes frontais, esperando o gongo soar.

“Fiquei feliz por ter conseguido botar meu jogo em prática, levei ele para o chão e controlei, mas ele estava escorregadio, muito por causa do sangue, e soube resistir. Cansei um pouco a mais no terceiro assalto, mas acho que deixei para perder muitos quilos na última hora, e isso acabou resultando no meu cansaço no fim”, explicou Roger ainda no cercado cinza. “Mas estou satisfeito, cada vez que piso nesse ringue para representar o Jiu-Jitsu e a família isso me faz mais feliz”.

No fim, as papeletas decretaram a vitória do tricampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu por decisão unânime.

“Foi importante o resultado, especialmente por eu ter vindo de um nocaute. Keith é um cara duro que já venceu muita gente boa por aí. Espero cansar menos na próxima vez, senti um pouco o esforço de perder peso. Foi minha maior lição na luta, como perder peso de forma mais correta e suave. O bom foi que ele estava cansado também”, comentou Roger.

Nas demais lutas, o ex-astro do UFC Nate Marquardt teve que suar para vencer o duro Tyron Woodley e sua mãe, que apoiou o lutador do início ao fim. Depois de três rounds de pura trocação e domínio alternando para ambos os lados, no quarto tempo Marquadt acertou duas cotoveladas que desmontaram Woodley, aí mais um gancho selou o resultado final.

Já na confronto principal, Luke Rockhold foi melhor que Tim Kennedy nos cinco assaltos, e levou por decisão unânime dos jurados. Veja os resultados:

Although he did win, Leonardo Santos’s last fight at Sengoku Raiden Championship wasn’t exactly what he’d hoped for. With an advantage over Satoro Yamada, the black belt ended up winning by disqualification after taking no less than three under-the-belt blows (see video below). Now Léo has the burly Maximo Blanco ahead of him on October 30, at the 15^th installment of the show, in Tokyo, Japan.

“The fight with Yamada was an awful experience the pain was horrible. You get hit and then two seconds later you fall to the ground in pain. Besides that, it’s unpleasant winning like that. Even though I was winning the fight, it seems like I didn’t even fight. But that just gives me more desire for my next challenge, which is really important. A win will put me or Maximo close to the best, and I hope it’ll be me,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com.

“Maximo is a dangerous fighter with heavy hands and is coming off four-straight wins. It’s a dangerous fight; I’ll have to keep on my toes the whole time. I’m going to train to get him into my game, which is on the ground, and get the win that way,” adds the black belt.

Léo knows that a win will put him in line for a shot at the title now held by Mizuto Hirota. He doesn’t know, however, what the organization’s plans have in store for him.

“There’s no lack of good fighters at my weight in Japan, but I don’t know what’s going on as far as a title fight. I don’t know if they’re waiting for Hirota to recover to figure it out. There’s a good group at my weight in Sengoku and I don’t know what they are waiting on to define it. There’s even the possibility of a GP, but up until now, no one has said it will really go through. In the meantime, the siege is closing in,” he says in finishing.

Apesar da vitória, a última luta de Leonardo Santos no Sengoku Raiden Championship não foi exatamente como o lutador queria. Levando vantagem contra Satoro Yamada, o faixa-preta acabou vencendo por desclassificação, após levar nada menos que quatro golpes na parte genital (veja no vídeo logo abaixo). Agora Léo terá a pedreira Maximo Blanco pela frente no dia 30 de outubro, quando acontece a 15ª edição do show em Tóquio, Japão.

“A luta com o Yamada foi uma experiência muito ruim, a dor é horrível. Tomamos a pancada e dois segundos depois caímos ao chão com muita dor. Além disso, é chato ganhar desse jeito. Apesar de estar dominando, parece até que não lutei. Mas isso me dá mais vontade para o próximo desafio, que é muito importante. A vitória vai colocar eu ou o Maximo perto do cinturão e espero que seja eu”, diz ao GRACIEMAG.com.

“O Maximo é um lutador perigoso, com a mão pesada e vem de quatro nocautes seguidos. É uma luta perigosa, que tenho que manter a atenção o tempo todo. Vou treinar para colocar ele no meu jogo, que é o chão, e sair de lá com a vitória”, completa o faixa-preta.

Léo sabe que o triunfo pode colocá-lo perto do título, hoje com Mizuto Hirota. Entretanto, não tem certeza quanto aos planos da organização.

“O que não falta no Japão é atleta bom no meu peso, mas não sei como segue esse lance do cinturão. Não sei se eles estão aguardando o Hirota se recuperar da lesão para definir isso. Tem uma galera muito boa no meu peso no Sengoku e não sei o que eles estão esperando para definir isso. Existia até a possibilidade de um GP, mas, até agora, ninguém diz o que realmente vai rolar. Enquanto isso, o cerco está fechando”, encerra.

Shinya Aoki foi duramente criticado pelos organizadores do Dream após a vitória em cima do campeão do Sengoku Mizuto Hirota, no K-1 “Dynamite: The Power of Courage 2009″, na noite de réveillon no Japão.

Em atitude nada respeitosa, após a chave de braço que entortou Hirota a 1min17s de luta, Aoki levantou o dedo para o oponente caído e desmoralizado na lona. Não bastasse, o campeão dos leves do Dream repetiu o gesto obsceno para torcida e os segundos de Hirota.

No dia seguinte, após represálias dos organizadores e da opinião pública, Aoki pediu desculpas, mas não se mostrou arrependido. Justificou seu ato pela excitação sentida na luta, e não disse o que Hirota fez para irritá-lo tanto.

“Depois da minha luta estava excitado e fiz algo rude pelo qual deveria me desculpar. Mas isso só demonstrou quão empolgado estava para aquela luta”, disse Aoki na coletiva de imprensa, apesar de dias antes ter chamado o adversário de um “virtual deconhecido”, disse.

“Quando eu trouxe o braço dele para trás, pude sentir estalando. Eu pensei ‘bem, esse cara é orgulhoso e não vai bater, vai?’ Então sem hesitar, eu quebrei o braço dele. Ouvi o barulho quebrando e pensei ‘ah, isso aí, quebrei’. Aí eu fui parado logo em seguida, mas não me arrependo”, completou.

O próximo desafio de Aoki será Tatsuya Kawajiri em confronto cotado para acontecer em março. Para 2010, Aoki mostrou disposição. Disse que deseja realizar de sete a dez lutas em sua carreira.
