Em setembro de 2010, no UFC 119, Minotouro pisava no cage para encarar o invicto Bader, na luta coprincipal da noite, que teve como último combate Frank Mir x Mirko Crocop, em card realizado em Indiana, EUA.

Com a intenção de trazer mais ênfase à prática de artes marciais no Brasil, o Ministério dos Esportes anunciou na última segunda-feira, dia 21, o lançamento do programa “Luta Pela Cidadania”, com a presença de nomes conhecidos do MMA, como Rogério Minotouro e Dedé Pederneiras.

A pasta pretende incentivar com verbas governamentais o pagamento de pessoal e doação de equipamentos necessários para a prática esportiva. O programa tem duração prevista de dois anos, e será dividido em núcleos, com quatro modalidades cada e com meta de contemplar até 600 atletas por núcleo.

O ministro George Hilton detalhou melhor o programa:

“O Ministério entra com a função de ampliar o número de centros de treinamento, alcançando ainda mais pessoas, desde crianças a idosos. Temos uma parceria com as escolas e as Forças Armadas, que contempla 16 mil crianças. Nossa meta é que o programa alcance 50 mil até o fim do próximo ano. Queremos ampliar, precisamos de união com as federações, trabalhar com crianças especiais. Nós vamos ser responsáveis pelo pagamento de profissionais e doação de equipamentos.

“O Luta pela Cidadania faz parte de uma política de Estado, uma política que deve ser contínua. Por isso estamos trabalhando diuturnamente para apresentar o quanto antes a Lei de Diretrizes e Bases do Esporte. Assim, independentemente de partido, de quem estiver à frente de uma secretaria ou da pasta, haverá diretrizes, e todos teremos que segui-las”, declarou.

Rogerio Minotouro has a meeting with Forrest Griffin at UFC 114, which takes place May 29 in Las Vegas. Coming off an impressive knockout win over Luis Banha, Minotouro is well placed in the organization and a win against Griffin could put him at the head of the line for a light heavyweight title challenge. Check out the conversation GRACIEMAG.com had with the fighter:

How are your preparations for this challenge going?

Been training hard.  We’re starting to get into the MMA-specific part. Before I was doing Jiu-Jitsu and boxing separately and now I’m doing everything together. In weight training I’m working on explosiveness now, which has more to do with the actual fight.

What is most dangerous about Forrest?

Everything. He’s well-rounded, good on the ground, good on his feet. He has a good combination of punches and kicks, is truly a complete fighter. I have to be well prepared and not mess up. To beat him I’ll have to be 100%.

Anderson Silva recently faced him. Has the Spider been helping you?

For sure. We’re training a lot and he’s helping me. Anderson is the guy who can help me best, having already fought Forrest and studied his game. He’s helping me a lot.

Will you carry on training in Brazil or will you go to the U.S.?

I’ll be here training and will only go to the United States 15 days before the fight for the final-adjustment phase. I’ll do my main training here at our training center. 

Your daughter, Valentina, was born recently. Does that help or throw you a bit off focus in training?

It’s fine. Everything is separate; there’s work and personal life. I’m training as I always have and am perhaps even more motivated, since I have more responsibility.

Today you use a lot of boxing, but your roots are in fighting on the ground. What in Jiu-Jitsu can you not use in MMA?

The spider-guard. How do I get my foot on the biceps? My opponent would blow me out of the water!

Now it’s official: “I signed today. It’ll go down on May 29,” said Rogerio Minotouro to GRACIEMAG.com, this Wednesday night.

The aforementioned statement refers to the fight with Forrest Griffin, his next challenge in the UFC, a matchup GRACIEMAG.com has commented on in recent months.

Griffin, a former light heavyweight champion, is coming off a win over Tito Ortiz at UFC 106. In his first appearance in the UFC, in November, Minotouro had a solid 1^st-round knockout win over Luis Banha. The bout, which would put the winner at the top of the weight group, was wished for by the fighter.

“That’s right, I asked for this fight. I wanted to figh thim,” says Minotouro.

“Forrest is a standup fighter, is aggressive, and I like that. He also has absurd stamina and excellent Jiu-Jitsu,” he says in praise.

To Minotouro’s delight, the fight is now set in stone. Nevertheless, he has many reasons to celebrate. Last Monday, January 25, Valentina was born, marking the Brazilian’s debut as a father.

“It’s awesome. Being a father is a great feeling, but also a great responsibility. She’s beautiful, took after her mother!” he said chuckling.

Speculation abounds that Rogerio Minotouro will face Forrest Griffin in the UFC. Recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out of his appointment with Brandon Vera, Minotouro won’t confirm the bout, but says he’s already back at work.

“I returned to training and I’ll likely fight at the end of April or early May. My opponent hasn’t been confirmed yet, but that’s the date they gave me,” he told the website of Brazilian network TV channel Rede.

Another who was on ice and is now back in training is Anderson Silva, Rogerio’s teammate. Anderson faces Vitor Belfort on April 10, in Abu Dhabi.

“They are two experienced fighters. Vitor is in top shape and has incredible muscular explosiveness. Now Anderson, striking, I feel is the most technical fighter in the world and is in the best shape of his career. For sure it’s a greatly awaited fight,” he remarks.

Minoto also spoke of the bout between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio Shogun, his relationship with brother Rodrigo Minotauro and, when asked about his favorite fighters, he doesn’t leave out veterans like Royce Gracie.

“I like BJ Penn, who’s been dominant at lightweight, Georges St-Pierre and Lyoto Machida. There are a lot of good guys, starting with Royce Grcie, who established Jiu-Jitsu in MMA and popularized the sport. We owe him a lot.”

Assim como já fez Rogério “Minotouro” Nogueira, Claudionei “Casca” Lacerda se divide entre o MMA e o boxe, tendo êxito nas duas modalidades. No MMA (treinado por Wado), ele não depende só da trocação, tendo duas vitórias por finalização, uma no Sul Fight e a outra no Floripa Fight. Já no boxe (treinado por Serjão), é o atual campeão Brasileiro, Sul Americano e, no último domingo (dia 20/12/2009), conquistou o Intercontinental Mundo Espânico, disputado na casa de shows Floripa Music Hall.

As ring girls agitaram o público

Contra o uruguaio Victor Hugo, mostrou perigo com cruzados por cima da guarda e golpes na linha de cintura, na curta distância. Casca soube soltar o jogo e sobrou na luta, quando aplicou excelentes combinações, contra-ataques e até um knockdown. Ao Victor Hugo restou evitar o combate em vários momentos e resistir á aula de boxe bravamente, até o fim, quando foi derrotado por decisão unânime.

O evento contou com o apoio do governo de Santa Catarina, com o trabalho de Diogo Wortiz (presidente da FECABOXE), teve a presença da atriz da Globo Natasha Haydt e a participação das ring girls Aninha Cullenberg e Cheilli Barbosa, que embelezaram a arena.

Você conseguiu um belo nocaute contra o Banha. Antes do combate, seu treinador de muay thai Luiz Alves comentou que a trocação foi muito trabalhada…
Realmente vinha treinando muito as situações de trocação com muito boxe. Foquei muito nisso e recebi até algumas críticas, o pessoal falando que estava treinando mais boxe que os outros fundamentos. Não imaginava que fosse nocautear em hipótese nenhuma, mas tinha a impressão que a luta seria em pé. Fui respeitando, até porque acho o Banha um atleta duríssimo, um cara que tem muita vontade e bate muito forte. Sabia que ele era perigoso nisso, por isso trabalhei tanto a trocação – para fazer frente.

Acha que o público e promotores se impressionaram?
Para mim foi um resultado excelente e venci da melhor forma possível. Foi bom porque estreei contra um adversário de nome e gosto de fazer lutas contra grandes adversários, isso dá mais motivação no treinamento. Como era minha estréia no Ultimate, sinto que ocorreu da melhor maneira possível. Era um evento que eu queria entrar faz tempo, e hoje é a principal promoção do mundo, é onde estão os melhores lutadores e onde encontrarei os maiores desafios da carreira.

Você teve uma boa participação no Pride, outrora o maior evento do mundo. Sente-se hoje ainda mais maduro a ponto de fazer história no UFC?
Vejo minha carreira melhor agora. Hoje, com certeza sou um cara mais maduro, objetivo, treino mais e tenho responsabilidades maiores. Atualmente tenho uma equipe, e isso aumenta o compromisso com todos, e me faz treinar mais. Quero treinar não apenas para as minhas lutas, mas para ajudar os companheiros e meu irmão. Tenho treinado muito com o Rodrigo e melhorado meu Jiu-Jitsu. Meu wrestling também melhorou muito, era uma falha que eu tinha, e estou conseguindo consertar isso. A parte de boxe nem se fala. Ainda mais depois que passei a treinar com o Luiz Alves (muay thai) e com o Dórea (boxe) e ter como sparrings o Cigano, Feijão, sem falar no Rodrigo… Ou seja, tenho o que preciso para o UFC.

Muita gente já pede uma luta sua contra o Forrest Griffin, que derrotou Tito Ortiz na mesma noite da sua estreia. O que acha?
Seria uma luta boa. Forrest é um cara agressivo, que luta em pé, e eu gosto disso. Ele também tem um excelente Jiu-Jitsu e um gás absurdo. Seria uma luta muito boa.

Como foi o tratamento na nova casa?
Foi só alegria. Fui muito bem recebido pelo pessoal do evento. O tempo todo o Dana White dizia: “Seja bem vindo à sua nova casa’. Me senti muito confortável com o tratamento que recebi. Todos os funcionários me davam boas vindas e diziam que aguardavam por mim. Como o Rodrigo faz um bom trabalho e tem um ótimo relacionamento com todo mundo lá, senti que as portas já estavam abertas.

Como você avalia sua categoria dos meio-pesados (até 94kg), que conta com pedreiras como Lyoto, Tito, Shogun, Rashad e Thiago Silva, entre tantos outros?
É a categoria mais dura. Vai ser muito bom e vou me divertir. Vamos brigar!

Pode-se dizer que Luiz Cane, o Banha, sentiu pela primeira vez o gosto da derrota contra Rogério Minotouro, no dia 21 de novembro, pelo UFC 106. O único revés do paulista até então fora por desclassificação, após aplicar uma joelhada ilegal na estréia pelo UFC, em dezembro de 2007, contra James Irvin.

Agora Banha terá de ficar um tempo de molho até poder voltar a ação. Segundo a Comissão Atlética de Nevada, o brasileiro parece ter sofrido uma fratura na órbita do olho direito e pode ficar até seis meses afastado. O mesmo tempo fora deve ficar Forrest Griffin, que venceu Tito Ortiz no combate principal da noite, e pode ter fraturado o pé.

Outro brazuca suspenso, porém com caso de menor gravidade, é Paulo Thiago. O policial do Bope não combate até 22 de dezembro.

Rogerio Minotouro didn’t feel the weight of his Octagon debut at UFC 106, this Saturday, and managed a concussive win over Luiz “Banha” Cane, one of the revelations of the MMA’s new generation.

At the post-event press-conference, by Tito Ortiz’s side, Minotouro commented on the knockout.

“Before the fight I could see he had good boxing. I figured I would use Jiu-Jitsu techniques, but changed plans. I won by knockout and am happy,” said the Brazilian.

For the good performance, Rodrigo Minotauro’s twin brother doesn’t forget to thank his team.

“It’s my first time here and I felt a lot of pressure. Everyone knows what the UFC is, but I have a good team, good coaches, so I was really confident for this fight. They helped me a lot and I think that is why I fought well,” he said in finishing.

With the technical knockout, 1:56min into the fight, Minoto also secured the knockout of the night bonus, to the tune of US$ 70 thousand dollars.

Another to gain some extra financial padding was Josh Koscheck. His fight with Anthony Johnson was voted best of the night – oddly, as the fight was stopped several times for fingers in the eyes and illegal blows. Beyond that, the second round rear-naked choke earned him submission of the night – also odd, considering Kendall Grove’s first round triangle.

Thus, the bleached-blond with the attitude took home US$ 140 thousand more than he could have hoped for.

To steal the show from Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin was already no easy task. Much less so is beating Luiz “Banha” Cane.

Therefore, Rogerio Nogueira had to bring in the big guns – on earth, in water and air – for his UFC debut, on November 21, at the 106th installment of the American event, to take place in Las Vegas.

Under the command of Alvaro Romano, GRACIEMAG columnist, Rogerio and Fabricio Morango – who debuts on the same night, against Caol Uno –, accompanied by Junior Cigano, have been doing Natural Gymnastics-based work to gain not just wind, but strength and explosion, in the pool.

On Saturday, Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin headline the card – in a rematch requested in 2006, after Tito overcame Griffin by split decision at the 59th event, in April of that year.

The bout between Ortiz and Griffin substituted the heavyweight-title fight between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, which has been put off indefinitely due to Lesnar’s recent health problems.

Minotouro’s opponent, Banha, 28, is riding a three-fight winning streak – two by technical knockout and the latest against Steve Cantwell by unanimous decision – into the bout.

The event also features an all-wrestler matchup in Josh Koshcheck and Anthony Johnson, in one of the most intriguing under 77kg bouts of 2009.
