Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira said goodbye to his MMA career this Tuesday.

One of the greatest stars in the sport’s history, he was champion of four different MMA organizations: Rings, WEF, Pride and the UFC.

He was also the protagonist of some of the most thrilling matches of all times.

Like this one here against Mark Coleman, at Pride 16, on September 2001.

The armbar from the triangle set-up was one of the finest examples of how Minotauro used his Jiu-Jitsu to win his MMA matches.

Minotauro also announced that he’s going to be an ambassador to UFC fighters in Brazil.

We say thanks to Minotauro for the thrills he offered us in 16 years as a professional with 34 wins and 10 defeats.

O UFC Uberlândia foi dramático para o público presente no ginásio do Sabiazinho. Maurício Shogun, estrela maior do evento principal, foi nocauteado rapidamente por Ovince St-Preux, em 34s. (Reveja aqui)

Após a amarga derrota, no último sábado, dia 8 de novembro, Maurício Shogun falou sobre o infeliz revés por sua conta no Facebook, e atribuiu sua derrota a um erro técnico:

“Cometi um erro técnico, talvez por ansiedade e muita vontade de conquistar essa vitória no Brasil e num momento tão importante da minha carreira, e paguei o preço. Méritos pro St. Preux, faz parte da luta e ele mereceu a vitória”, revela o meio-pesado.

“Quero deixar aqui meu agradecimento pela torcida de todos no último Sábado a noite. Quero também agradecer as demonstrações de carinho e força que recebi após a luta.”

“Perder é sempre muito ruim, dói de mais, mas o que mais esta doendo é perder sem poder mostrar o que treinei e o que sei fazer. Luta é luta, e eu sei que nesse peso qualquer mão que entra no começo de luta pode custar muito caro. Por muitas vezes na minha carreira estive do lado feliz e infelizmente dessa vez experimentei o lado triste dessa história.”

“Sei que muita gente vai meter o pau, uns criticarem construtivamente e outros apenas aproveitar pra despejar todo tipo de gozação e ofensas possíveis. Infelizmente faz parte de estar em evidência, e é algo que como atletas profissionais, e em especial no Brasil, temos que estar sempre acostumados a lidar.”

“Por mais que muitos duvidem, eu me preparei muito pra essa luta e estava bem treinado, e isso é o que mais dói em perder dessa maneira, sem poder mostrar aquilo que treinei. Quem acompanhou, treinou comigo, ou viu meus treinos sabe disso. Quando você perde lutando por alguns rounds, minutos que seja, de certa forma é menos sofrido porque realmente você mostrou o que treinou e não foi capaz, mas dessa forma realmente é muito frustrante.”

Campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu peso pesadíssimo (2010), Rodrigo Cavaca tem reforçado os treinos de solo de Vitor Belfort para o duelo contra Chris Weidman, marcado para 6 de dezembro em Vegas. A luta vale o cinturão dos médios do UFC, e o treinador tem visto no veterano astro do MMA um atleta com motivação de principiante.

“O Weidman é atlético, novo, tem as quedas como ponto forte e sabe chão. Está melhorando a trocação e psicologicamente vive um bom momento. Mas é um atleta como todos os outros, nada de diferenciado”, analisa o professor. “Mesmo com tantos anos de carreira, Vitor está treinando como um iniciante viciado em aprender, com a motivação e empolgação de quem deu o primeiro armlock ou o primeiro triângulo. É muito bom trabalhar com quem tem vontade de aprender”.

A parceria de Cavaca com Vitor aconteceu quando ambos treinaram juntos na academia do astro do UFC, localizada na Barra, no Rio de Janeiro.

Para Cavaca, o Jiu-Jitsu de Vitor hoje está no nível de outros campeões da arte suave no MMA, como Demian Maia, Robert Drysdale e Minotauro.

“Vitor conseguiu fazer o mais difícil, que é a transição do Jiu-Jitsu competitivo para o MMA. Poucos na história conseguiram isso. Vocês podem observar diversos campeões mundiais que tentaram e desistiram. Podem ter certeza que o Jiu-Jitsu dele é eficiente demais: calmo e objetivo. É em cima disso que estamos trabalhando. Estamos potencializando suas principais características, tornando-o mais forte e eficiente no que ele já faz de melhor. Em poucos dias, já pude ver uma absorção impressionante das informações que estamos passando a ele. O Vitor tem um Jiu-Jitsu afiado, assim como Minotauro, Demian e Drysdale”, afirma Cavaca.

“A única coisa que estou fazendo aqui é acrescentar detalhes que possam ajudar o Vitor a melhorar suas posições, deixá-lo cada vez mais forte e confiante em todos os setores do chão que ele cair – isso se ele cair, né! A relação do time está excelente, todos voltados para um único objetivo: o cinturão. Ele virá com fé em Deus”, aposta o faixa-preta.

A seleção canarinho, como o torcedor ficou sabendo, vai enfrentar mais uma vez a Croácia, em sua estreia no dia 12 de junho, em São Paulo. No mundo do MMA, o confronto entre brasileiros e croatas sempre agitou a torcida. Em 2003, um clássico marcante do Pride viu Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira encarando Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, e o desfecho poucos esquecem.

Outro duelo Brasil x Croácia marcante ocorreu em 2007, quando o campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu Gabriel Napão chocou os fãs ao aplicar em Cro Cop um dos nocautes mais reprisados do UFC.

With a little over a week for the UFC in Fortaleza, Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira are already in the final stages of training for their main event on the 8th of June. However, these two beasts have met on the mat before.

The duel took place at the now-defunct Pride in July 2006 at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan. The event, which featured other famous names like Mirko Cro Cop, Wanderlei Silva, Mark Hunt, Vitor Belfort, Alistair Overeem and Rogerio Nogueira, was not divided into rounds of three or five minutes. LAS VEGAS — Daniel Cormier hosted a question & answer session on Friday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The audience was able to ask questions and get answers from the fighter on various subjects.

The American, who won the Strikeforce Heavyweight GP, had his first fight in the UFC against Frank Mir last month at UFC on Fox, which he won by decision. But for his next challenge, Cormier has his eyes on a couple of Brazilian heavyweights scheduled to face each other next month in June.

“I want to face the winner of the fight between Nogueira and Werdum,” said the undefeated athlete.

Despite being available to the UFC to do more in fighting at heavyweight, Cormier can go down a weight class to avoid a collision with his friend and training partner, heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez.

One of the highlights of the chat involved whether or not Cormier wants to fight light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The world-class wrestler provided fans an answer that they all wanted to hear.

“Everybody wants to know if I’ve already started (lowering my) weight to face Jon Jones at light heavyweight,” he said. “Give me the fight, and I’ll be ready tomorrow.”

Cormier also pointed at a duel against Josh Barnett as the toughest of his career, and revealed that in practice, suffers at the hands of Cain Velasquez.

“Cain hits hard, training with him is a challenge. It hurts me more than I him,” he explained. “As for the hardest fight of my career, I never felt like crying after a fight, but after facing Josh, I collapsed when I met my mother. I had a cut, and was very sore from all the heavy blows that I took. He hit me hard and just wanted to hear from her that everything was fine.”

After joining Team Nogueira, under Rodrigo and Rogério Nogueira, UFC middleweight Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares has made the decision to move down a weight division.

At five foot eight and about 198 pounds, the fighter is undergoing a series of clinical and physical testing for weight loss. The process consists of diet and nutritional supplementation, along with a team composed of a doctor, pharmacist and nutritionist.

“My desire to get down to the welterweight division is great, but I don’t want to make a hasty decision,” said Palhares in a release sent to GRACIEMAG. “I will only really do it if my body’s response is positive. I’m doing a fully integrated work of nutrition, fitness, supplementation and orthomolecular medicine. I’m with a very good  team taking care of me.”

Toquinho (14-5), known for his dangerous leg locks, has fought in UFC since 2008 where he had 11 fights, submitting four by leg lock. In his last fight in the Octagon, Palhares was defeated by Hector Lombard in the first round.

In addition, the athlete from Minas Gerais, Brazil was tested positive during the UFC drug test, and remains suspended until December.

On May 25, Antonio Bigfoot Silva enters the octagon once again facing Cain Velasquez. This time he’s going for the heavyweight belt in UFC 160 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In order for the title to go back to Brazil, Bigfoot intensified his training at American Top Team in Florida, and called reinforcements for the camp, including heavyweight Glover Teixeira, who will fight on the same card against James Te Huna.

Focused on grabbing the biggest chance of his life, Bigfoot trusts in the potential of his training partners for the last 45 days of training.

“Glover is very strong, can put the opponent down very well, he enters on the front leg very well, very fast. His presence in my camp will be very important,” says Silva. “I believe that he will be the heavyweight champion of UFC soon. We also have excellent wrestlers and strikers here, the training is excellent. I am very confident that I will perform on May 25 very well”.

Besides counting on Glover Teixeira skills, Antonio Silva also bets on tips from Steve Mocco, a former Olympic wrestler, to surprise his opponent. Mocco already faced Velasquez when they practiced wrestling for their respective colleges.

“Mocco is helping me  a lot, especially since he premiered last year in MMA. He is applying wrestling in MMA, and that’s great as it is crucial in my preparation process,” says the giant from Paraíba. He also bets on his Muay Thai, the key weapon in his knockout win over Alistair Overeem. “Although I’m training a lot of grappling, I will also emphasize on standup with Katel Kubis and Pedro Rizzo,” he says.

Training only in the US

In his last fights, Silva was part of camp at Team Nogueira. But this time, the quality of the ATT is so great that a return to Brazil is not part of his plans.

“I was almost certain to return to Rio de Janeiro to train at Team Nogueira, but I’m feeling very well here, the training is paying off. I think that by getting close to my family I can do better. I always thank Minotauro for everything he has done for me and for always greeting me with open arms; It is an eternal debt that I have,” concluded Silva.

A four-time world champion of both Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” has got a full agenda.

This week he was called on to help Fabricio Werdum coach his team on the second season of the TUF Brazil reality show, shooting of which will only begin in 2013. The black belt will join the likes of Wanderlei Silva, Rafael Cordeiro, Felipe Werdum and Kenny Johnson on the coaching staff.

Before getting to watch the Jiu-Jitsu professor from Team Alliance every Sunday on Globo channel, though, anyone in Brazil can get to learn from him live and in person.

Cobrinha will be teaching seminars in the State of São Paulo, the first of which is coming up on the 14th, at the São Carlos Judo Association. Entry costs BRL 50, and all the proceeds will go to a social project under team Bushido. The program attends to the needs of 80 underprivileged children, helping them to gain social inclusion through the practice of sports.

On November 17, Cobrinha will be teaching his tricks at Espaço do Corpo Academy in São Paulo City. The cost is BRL 80.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship teeters but doesn’t fall. While losing marquee fights like José Aldo-Frankie Edgar and Quinton Jackson-Glover Teixeira was a hard knock, the biggest MMA event in the world was quick to suck it up and promptly deal with the damage to the card. This Wednesday three new match-ups for the third installment of the October 13 UFC Rio show were announced.

Middleweight champion Anderson Silva will return to the light heavyweight fold to take on TUF 1 finalist Stephan Bonnar. This will be Silva’s third appearance in the weight class above his, having previously fought and beaten by first-round knockout James Irvin and Forrest Griffin. Now Bonnar is riding a three-fight win streak. Check out the hard-nosed American, once trained by the legendary Carlson Gracie, fighting Lyoto Machida in the inaugural Jungle Fight event, back in 2003 in the city of Manaus.

Another bout confirmed for the card has Rodrigo Minotauro taking on Dave Herman. The Brazilian has not fought since an ill-fated encounter with Frank Mir in December 2012, while the seasoned Dave Herman is coming off back-to-back losses, to Stefan Struve and Roy Nelson, but holds 21 career wins.

Now Glover Teixeira, initially scheduled to fight Quinton Jackson, now has Fabio Maldonado ahead of him. Glover made his UFC debut submitting Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 146, while Maldonado holds one win and two setbacks since joining the big league.

Promotional kingpin Dana White was quick to patch up the gaps in the Brazil show, and thanked the fighters for their support. “Much respect for Anderson, Minotauro, Bonnar, etc. Thanks for doing UFC 153. Brazil will be fun! Rio, here we come!” posted White on Twitter.
