If you, dear reader, are an MMA fan and have been hungry for some Jiu-Jitsu, UFC 142 was a banquet. Among the tasty morsels, GRACIEMAG.com highlights Gabriel Napão’s choke, Yuri Marajó’s armbar, Edson Barboza‘s sweep, the crippling (as always) heel hook of  Rousimar Toquinho , and the goose-choke pulled off byVitor Belfort.

To analyze some of the most striking subs from the event, we called on a Jiu-Jitsu black belt and future MMA star—one who was even called up for UFC 142.

JIU-JITSU, PREEMPTION AND GOOSE-CHOKE COUNTER-ATTACK

Light heavyweight Caio “Monstro” Magalhães ended up not making his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut, as his opponent, the hard-hitting Fabio Maldonado, was injured in the days preceding UFC 142.

To make use of the adrenaline, though, he presented two defenses for the excruciating move Toquinho used on Mike Massenzio.

The Nova União representative from the Brazilian state of Ceará also demonstrated how he’d surprise an opponent attacking his back—something Anthony Johnson didn’t even hint at doing against Belfort, to the joy of the HSBC Arena.

O meio-pesado Caio “Monstro” Magalhães acabou não fazendo sua estreia no Ultimate, já que o oponente, a pedreira Fabio Maldonado, contundiu-se às vésperas do UFC 142.

Para aproveitar a adrenalina, no entanto, ele apresentou duas defesas para o golpe mortal usado por Toquinho contra Mike Massenzio.

O cearense da Nova União ainda demonstrou como surpreenderia um oponente que atacasse suas costas, algo que Anthony Johnson nem esboçou fazer contra Belfort, para alegria da HSBC Arena.

Toquinho vem de vitória sobre Dan Miller, em agosto no UFC Rio. Na ocasião, o faixa-preta viveu um momento inusitado. Quando estava perto de definir por nocaute técnico, o brasileiro correu para comemorar, mas o árbitro não havia interrompido. “Ele gritou e achei que tinha parado”, explicou depois.  Na sequência, Toquinho seguiu controlando e, apesar do terceiro assalto duro, assegurou a decisão unânime a seu favor.

Já Massenzio está em sua segunda passagem no Ultimate. Na jaula mais famosa do mundo, o americano tem duas vitórias e duas derrota.

Já segundo o site MMAbay.com, outro combate fechado verbalmente vai por frente a frente Rob Broughton e o brasileiro Ednaldo Oliveira. o Lula. Rob vem de duas derrotas no peso pesado do UFC, enquanto Lula tem 15 lutas, oito nocautes e nenhuma derrota. (Veja Lula em ação a seguir)

Toquinho is coming off an August win over Dan Miller on the UFC’s last trip to Rio. On the occasion, the black belt came close to cinching the win by knockout but stopped short for a premature victory celebration, without the referee having called an end to the bout. “He yelled, so I thought it was over,” he later explained. After starting up again, Toquinho continued to dictate the pace and, despite getting put through the wringer in the third round, held out for the unanimous decision.

Now Massenzio is on his second tour of the UFC, holding two wins and two losses overall under the promotional banner.

According to website MMABay.com, another matchup that has been verbally agreed to pits Rob Broughton against promotional-first-timer Ednaldo Oliveira. Rob is coming off back to back losses in the UFC heavyweight division, while Lula has amassed 15 wins, eight knockouts and no losses  (watch Lula in action below).

While the two title fights headlining UFC 136 last night in Houston were the main focus, Chael Sonnen made a splash of his own with his win, quick to issue another challenge to Anderson Silva right after.

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard

In the main event of the evening, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard had a thrilling match, which Frankie came from behind to win in spectacular fashion. In the opening round the champion took some heavy shots, was wisibly wobbled by an upper cut but hung on. The second and third round saw Frankie get the better of the action, and in the fourth he came up with the knockout after landing a right hook that grounded his opponent, following up with strikes on the ground. Still, the Frankie vs. Maynard trilogy remains without a winner, as they share one win apiece and a draw between them.

José Aldo vs. Kenny Florian

José Aldo left nothing to chance in defending his UFC title for a second time, against Kenny Florian. After an evenly-matched first round, Aldo went on to land strikes with frequency and even make it to mount twice. With his leg battered from stinging leg kicks, Florian relied on clinching against the fencing to make things hard on Aldo, who with the unanimous decision win brings his winning streak to 13 and defends his featherweight title for the second time.

Chael Sonnen vs Brian Stann

Sonnen – who’d have guessed? – used the Jiu-Jitsu he speaks so negatively about to good effect, taking Brian Stann down at will and moving to back mount and mount a number of times. The end came in round two, when Sonnen landed an arm triangle choke for the tapout. After his arm was raised he was quick to speak evil of Anderson Silva and make a promise he’ll hope he won’t have to keep: to quit the UFC if Anderson Silva should beat him again.

Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan

Both needed wins at all costs, having come off porr results. But it was the smaller Nam Phan who peppered Garcia with strikes and even landing a knockdown. While Garcia did launch a rally-back flurry of strikes in the third round, it wasn’t enough, as Phan was rightly given the unanimous nod. Garcia, who lost his second in a row, was applauded for his efforts, as he exited the cage.

Duas disputas de cinturão agitaram o UFC 136, em Houston, Texas. Mas o público também vibrou com combates como o de Chael Sonnen, que não demorou e desafiou Anderson Silva logo após o triunfo. Confira tudo nas análises abaixo:

Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard 

Numa luta eletrizante, Frankie Edgar finalmente venceu Gray Maynard e teve êxito na defesa do título de leves. Edgar protagonizou uma virada incrível. No primeiro round, se abalou após um upper certeiro do oponente e resistiu aos trancos e barrancos. Quando tudo parecia a favor de Maynard, Frankie passou a lutar melhor na segunda e terceira parciais. No quarto assalto, conectou bons socos, principalmente um cruzado de direita, que derrubou o adversário.  Após mais alguns socos, o nocaute manteve o cinturão nas mãos do campeão, mas a trilogia Frankie vs Maynard segue sem vencedor, com uma vitória para cada lado e um empate.

José Aldo vs Kenny Florian 

Na segunda defesa de título no UFC, José Aldo não deu bobeira contra Kenny Florian. Depois de um primeiro round parelho, passou a conectar os melhores golpes na trocação e usou bem a arte suave, tendo chegado duas vezes à montada. Os chutes na perna também abalaram o oponente. A Florian só restou dificultar usando o clinch, e o triundo foi para Aldo, que chega à 13ª vitória seguida e é o melhor do mundo entre os pesos penas.

Chael Sonnen vs Brian Stann

Sonnen, quem diria, usou bem o Jiu-Jitsu, modalidade que costuma criticar. Quedou Brian Stann com facilidade e alcançou diversas vezes as costas e a montada. No segundo round, encaixou o katagatame e tratou de finalizar. Sabe qual foi a primeira declaração depois do triunfo?

“Anderson Silva, você é uma bosta”, disse o polêmico lutador, que quer a revanche no UFC, de preferência no dia da final do Superbowl. “Será a revanche mais aguardada do MMA. Se você perder para mim, Silva, saia da categoria até 84kg. Já se eu perder para você, eu abandono o UFC”.

Na plateia, o Aranha fez graça ao lado do ex-jogador de basquete Charles Barkley. Através do Twitter, Dana White, presidente do UFC, disparou: “Shit just GOT REAL!!!!!!”

Leonard Garcia vs Nam Phan 

Ambos precisavam da vitória a qualquer custo, já que vinham de resultados negativos. Apesar da baixa estatura, Nam Phan encaixou os melhores socos, tendo conseguido um knockdown. Na terceira parcial, Garcia veio com tudo para a recuperação, com uma sequência de socos que levantou a torcida. Mas não foi suficiente. Phan ainda conseguiu quedar para faturar a decisão unânime. Garcia perdeu a segunda seguida, mas saiu muito aplaudido.

Joe Lauzon vs Melvin Guillard 

Numa série de cinco vitórias, Guillard partiu com tudo. Um triunfo poderia levá-lo à disputa do cinturão de leves. No entanto, recebeu um soco de Joe Lauzon e ficou grogue. Lauzon aproveitou o momento, pegou as costas e tratou de encaixar o mata-leão, aos 47s do assalto inicial. O Jiu-Jitsu segue sendo a fraqueza de Guillard. No penúltimo revés, para Nate Diaz, foi finalizado numa guilhotina.

Demian Maia vs Jorge Santiago 

Demian pareceu ter encontrado o equilíbrio entre Jiu-Jitsu, boxe e wrestling. Nos três rounds contra Jorge Santiago, o faixa-preta soube usar bem a trocação para se aproximar e derrubar. No chão, trabalhou no ground and pound e controlou a situação, sem sofrer perigo. A torcida vaiou, mas a luta estratégica, que teve bons momentos, valeu o triunfo a Demian, que se recupera da derrota na última apresentação.

As is its tradition, the Ultimate Fighting Championship hands out bonuses for the best performances of the night. For UFC on Versus 2 this Sunday, the bonuses were worth 40 thousand dollars.

Charles do Bronx didn’t seem to have cold feet about making his debut and submitted Darren Elkins in just 41 seconds. The swift armbar following a triangle yielded the Brazilian the submission of the night reward.

Best knockout went to Takanori Gomi, the only bonus winner on the main card. The Japanese fighter ignored the favoritism Tyson Griffin enjoyed going into the match and dropped his opponent in the opening round.

Now fight of the night honors were Brian Stann and Mike Massenzio’s, in a bout where the former ended the action with a triangle.

Tradicionalmente, o Ultimate Fighting premia os melhores da noite com uma bonificação extra. No UFC on Versus  2, neste domingo, o prêmio valeu 40 mil dólares.

Charles do Bronx não sentiu o peso da estreia e finalizou Darren Elkins em apenas 41s. O justo armlock, além de dar moral ao brasileiro, valeu como a finalização da noite. 

O melhor nocaute ficou com Takanori Gomi, o único premiado do card televisionado. O japonês não deu importância ao favoritismo de Tyson Griffin e derrubou o oponente no primeiro assalto. 

Já a melhor luta foi para Brian Stann e Mike Massenzio, em combate que o primeiro finalizou com um triângulo.
