The man who was victorious in the featured bout of World Series of Fighting’s very first event will return once again to headline for the promotion.

Andrei Arlovski (20-10) will compete in the main event of next month’s WSOF 5 against Mike Kyle (20-9-1) in a heavyweight bout on Saturday, Sept. 14, at New Jersey’s Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, according to a press release received on Wednesday. Arlovski is a replacement for the injured Anthony Johnson.

Arlovski, a former UFC heavyweight titleholder, made his World Series of Fighting debut this past November, when he earned a first-round TKO victory over Devin Cole. He returned to the promotion in March, when he suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Anthony Johnson. The result snapped a five-fight win streak for Arlovski.

Kyle is a 12-year veteran of the sport who hails from one of MMA’s most-respected fight camps, American Kickboxing Academy. A resident of San Jose, Calif., Kyle is no stranger to competing against top fighters including Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante, Gegard Mousasi, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, Krzysztof Soszynski and Fabricio Werdum, among others.

WSOF 5 features a five-fight main card in addition to a full lineup of preliminary contests. Middleweight tournament opening-round match-ups of Dave Branch (12-3) vs. Danillo Villefort (14-4) and Elvis Mutapcic (13-2) vs. Jesse Taylor (26-9) have been booked, and additional bouts will be announced soon.

The live, two-and-a-half-hour NBC Sports Network telecast of the World Series of Fighting 5 main card begins at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT. The night’s preliminary bouts stream live on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com, beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

A light heavyweight bout between Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (15-4) and Mike “MAK” Kyle (20-9-1) headlines World Series of Fighting’s return to Revel Casino Hotel’s Ovation Hall in on New Jersey’s Revel Atlantic City on Sept. 14.

The contest serves as the main event of “World Series of Fighting 5: Johnson vs. Kyle,” which airs live on NBC Sports Network and marks the promotion’s second visit to the world-class venue.

Johnson, of Boca Raton, Fla., made his World Series of Fighting debut at the promotion’s very first event and delivered a knockout finish of the D.J. Linderman. The 29-year-old Blackzilians product returned to action in March and scored a decision win over former UFC heavyweight titleholder Andrei Arlovski.

Johnson now returns to the light-heavyweight division on a five-fight win streak and quickly is establishing himself as one of World Series of Fighting’s most dynamic athletes.

Kyle is a 12-year veteran of the sport who hails from one of MMA’s most-respected fight camps, American Kickboxing Academy. A resident of San Jose, Calif., Kyle is no stranger to the spotlight and has stepped in the cage against a who’s who list of MMA’s top fighters in two weight classes, including Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante, Gegard Mousasi, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, Krzysztof Soszynski and Fabricio Werdum.

Former rivals from their days in competition Jiu-Jitsu, where they made their mark on the sport’s history, Roger Gracie and Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza fought for the same dream: to become absolute champion of the world. Both of them succeeded.

With time the two aces decided to migrate to MMA, where they carry on in their battle to the top. And both are already knocking on the door of the world’s premier MMA promotion, the UFC, as their tenure at Strikeforce ends with their participation on the company’s farewell card this Saturday, Jan. 12, in Oklahoma.

This Thursday, the two champions met up amicably, despite the pre-weigh-in hunger they were feeling. Alongside boxing coach Josuel Distak, Gracie and Jacaré sat down at the same table and exchanged pleasantries.

Five matches between Roger Gracie and Ronaldo Jacaré

Roger and Jacaré have faced each other in Jiu-Jitsu on five occasions, one of them without the gi—the absolute final at the 2005 ADCC. The one that caused the biggest hoopla came before then, though, in the absolute division at the 2004 World Championship.

Gracie and Jacaré made it to the final of the black belt absolute and starred in an epic duel where Jacaré had his arm dislocated by a Gracie armbar. Nevertheless, he held out till the end to win his first gold medal as a black belt.

On weight

The two aces have a date with the scale today, when official weigh-ins for the last Strikeforce event go down at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi was once widely considered one of the top light heavyweight MMA fighters on the planet. Many, though, have changed their minds about that.

According to Mousasi, people are free to have their own opinion on the matter, but what he sees in himself is far from a guy that can’t compete with the best. On the contrary, the Netherlands resident said he has all the potential in the world. His problem is he just hasn’t tapped into it the way he should.

With his new drive, he’s looking to prove doubters wrong.

“I feel like I have a lot of potential, but I haven’t been using it properly,” Mousasi told GRACIEMAG.com. “With that, I want to show my full potential. I can beat big names. That’s something I want to do — to prove people wrong. I think they underestimate me.”

The fighter pointed to his loss to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal as the turning point in his career where spectators and supporters became disinterested naysayers. The bout was Mousasi’s first Strikeforce title defense, and the fighter was constantly put on his back by the challenger. The bout was scored unanimously for Lawal, and Mousasi lost his belt.

It’s instances like this, Mousasi said, that people cling onto. They forget any accomplishments, only remembering what went wrong.

But it’s those same people that will want to match Mousasi up with the top contenders if he beats a name that holds any weight.

“One poor performance has changed peoples’ opinions,” he said, reflecting on the Lawal loss. “People always remember the bad things. I know if I beat one big name, everyone’s going to say they want to see another big match-up.”

Mousasi’s next outing is against Mike Kyle at the final Strikeforce event, which is scheduled for this weekend. Kyle is a strong, hard-hitting opponent, Mousasi said, but he’s confident he can get the job against the American fighter.

Once the Kyle fight is done, much of the attention will be on Mousasi’s likely transition to the UFC — a place where many wonder if Mousasi can perform well.

The potential to finally fight in the premier MMA organization is motivation on its own, he said. And for a fighter that’s had his motivation questioned in the past, the chance to fight in the UFC will be his ultimate proving ground.

“I think the difference now is the UFC is the biggest stage and people are always wondering how I would do against the big, famous names,” he explained. “I’d like to see myself fighting those big names on the highest stage. That’s motivation by itself.

“This fight is more motivating, especially since the door to the UFC is so close.”

Fights with high-profile light heavyweights has Mousasi more excited to compete than ever. Before, a fight was just another fight, he explained, and they lacked any special meaning. They were simply routine, he said.

But after a year of recovering from injury, and the door to the UFC just over the horizon, a fire is lit under the fighter. First comes Kyle, but then opportunities to face the likes of Alexander Gustafsson, Lyoto Machida, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Jon Jones will soon follow, he hopes.

Jan. 12’s Strikeforce event is a fresh start for Mousasi. He admitted to the lack of motivation to train in the past, but all the chances to prove his doubters wrong are just around the corner, and he’ll start by trying to turn opinions with Kyle on Saturday.

“I’m doing everything right, especially with the UFC so close,” he said. “I’m really excited for that.”

Roger e Ronaldo Jacaré chegaram à final do absoluto faixa-preta e protagonizaram um duelo épico, em que Jacaré teve o braço deslocado num armlock, mas não bateu e ficou com seu primeiro ouro na faixa-preta.

Maior colecionador de medalhas de ouro em Mundiais de Jiu-Jitsu, Roger Gracie está confirmado no derradeiro evento do Strikeforce, dia 12 de janeiro em Oklahoma City, nos EUA. O faixa-preta de Carlos Gracie Jr encara o americano Anthony Smith (17v, 7d), na divisão dos médios.

Com cinco vitórias e uma derrota no MMA, o Gracie radicado na Inglaterra chega ao Rio de Janeiro por volta do dia 4 de dezembro, semana que vem, para treinos de fazer o amante de Jiu-Jitsu salivar.

“O Joinha conversou com o Rodrigo Minotauro e achamos uma boa ideia treinar por lá, no Team Nogueira, no Rio de Janeiro”, disse o finalizador. “Eu ia ao Brasil de qualquer modo para passar férias, então não foi uma mudança tão grande de planos”.

Quem também está dentro do card galáctico do Strikeforce é o ex-campeão do evento Ronaldo Jacaré. O bicampeão mundial absoluto de Jiu-Jitsu substituiu o campeão dos médios, Luke Rockhold, lesionado. Jaca luta contra o invicto Lorenz Larkin, 13 lutas e 13 vitórias.

The greatest Jiu-Jitsu World Championship medal collector, Roger Gracie (5-1), is confirmed for the final Strikeforce event, which takes place Jan. 12 in Oklahoma City, Okla., USA. The Carlos Gracie Jr. black belt will take on American Anthony Smith (17-7) in a middleweight match-up.

Gracie will fly to Rio de Janeiro from his home of England next week for some training that will make jiu-jitsu lovers’ mouths water.

“Joinha spoke to Rodrigo Minotauro, and we felt it would be a good idea if I went to train there, at Team Nogueira in Rio de Janeiro,” said the tapout artist. “I was going to Brazil for the Holidays anyways, so it wasn’t too big a change of plans.”

Former Strikeforce champion middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza is also on the Jan. 12 card. The two-time absolute world champion of jiu-jitsu enters in the place of injured middleweight champion Luke Rockhold. Souza will take on Lorenz Larkin, who is undefeated in his 13-fight career.

If you’re a Strikeforce fan, you’d better make the most of the next show. According to sources close to the event that launched the likes of Ronda Rousey, Antonio Pezão and Ronaldo Jacaré, it’s set to close its doors after the January 12 show in Oklahoma, USA.

What we can expect now, if no twists or turns in the story arise, is an exit for the ages, as that’s just what the card in the works looks sure to provide. The reigning lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, will take on Pat Healy in the main event, and besides retiring the promotional belt to his mantel, the winner will surely join the UFC’s ranks carrying some major clout.

And three more champions are tipped to defend their crowns at the farewell event. Middleweight kingpin Luke Rockhold takes on Lorenz Larkin, while Nate Marquardt defends his welterweight belt against Tarec Saffiedine, and the promotion’s number 1 heavyweight, Daniel Cormier, locks horns with Dion Staring, with UFC fans watching attentively.

O card do próximo Strikeforce, no próximo dia 29, está recheado de candidatos à finalização mais bonita da noite.

Na luta principal, Gilbert Melendez representa o Jiu-Jitsu ensinado por seu professor Cesar Gracie. Na luta feminina, Cat Zingano disputa com Amanda Nunes quem tem mais chão, força e técnica.

Nas demais lutas, só fera: Guto Inocente, Jorge Gurgel, Jorge Santiago, Yuri Villefort… Duro de escolher quem será o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu mais comentado ao final.

Entre todos eles, há um campeão da arte suave que faz sua estreia do alto de uma longa carreira.

Com 23 vitórias em 29 combates, o amazonense Adriano Martins faz sua estreia no Strikeforce em Sacramento após anos de batalhas de kimono no Tijuca, e nos ringues do Jungle Fight.

Principal representante da Top Life, em Manaus, Adriano encara Isaac Vallie-Flagg e defende os treinos no calor amazônico. “Não preciso estar lá fora passando por dificuldades, porque sei que nosso Estado tem como me ajudar, apoiando não só eu como outros atletas daqui” disse ele ao colaborador Arthur Castro. Adriano conta com o apoio de grandes empresas amazonenses.

Adriano fechou um contrato de quatro lutas com o Strikeforce, e a primeira é contra este americano de 13 triunfos em 17 lutas – Isaac vem de vitória sobre Gesias Cavalcante, por decisão dividida dos jurados.

O brasileiro embarca sábado para os Estados Unidos com sua equipe e lá finaliza o processo de perda de peso. “Essa é a parte mais difícil, pois preciso perder 16kg para bater 70 um dia antes do show. Para obter sucesso  na carreira internacional, estou me espelharndo em lutadores renomados como meu conterrâneo José Aldo, Anderson Silva e Vitor Belfort “, comentou.

Também entre os leves, Gilbert Melendez e Pat Healy se engalfinham pelo título.

Já Cat Zingano é vista como uma das grandes estrelas da noite.

“Ela tem toneladas de talento, e agora está chegando ao Strikeforce para se testar contra as melhores. Com uma sólida carreira no wrestling e sua própria escola de Jiu-Jitsu, no Colorado, ela é uma lutadora completa, que representa uma ameaça a todas as concorrentes do peso-galo”, disse o produtor Scott Coker ao MMAJunkie.com.

The card for the next Strikeforce show, coming up on the 29th, is packed with candidates for the “Submission of the Night” award.

In the main event, Gilbert Melendez will be carrying the flag of his Jiu-Jitsu teacher Cesar Gracie. In the female fight, Cat Zingano and Amanda Nunes will lock horns to see who’s got more grappling, skill and technique.

The rest of the card is also studded with stalwart fighters: Guto Inocente, Jorge Gurgel, Jorge Santiago… Predicting the Jiu-Jitsu black belt to make the most noise is a tough pick.

Among them, one gentle-art whiz will be making his promotional debut after a lengthy career.

With 23 wins in 29 fights, Amazonas State native Adriano Martins will be making his Strikeforce debut in Sacramento, California, after years of gi-clad combat at the Tijuca Tennis Club, as well as MMA action in his native Brazil at events like Jungle Fight.

The biggest name out of Top Life team, Adriano will be taking on Isaac Vallie-Flagg to prove the training in the equatorial heat of his home is all he needs. “I don’t need to be abroad going through a rough time, because I know our state can help me, backing not just me but other athletes from these parts,” he told our contributor Arthur Castro. Adriano is sponsored by a number of big companies from the state of Amazonas.

Adriano sealed a four-fight deal with Strikeforce, of which this fight against Isaac – an American with 13 wins in 17 fights, as well as a split decision win over Gesias Cavalcante – is the first.

The Brazilian and his team will be taking off for the United States this Saturday. There, he will go through the final process of shedding weight. “That’s the toughest part, because I have to lose 16 kg [35 lbs] to make 70 one day before the show. To achieve success in my international career I’m modeling myself on renowned fighters from my homeland like José Aldo, Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort,” he said.

The show will also feature a lightweight title fight, with Gilbert Melendez defending his crown against Pat Healy.

Now Cat Zingano is also being touted as one of the big stars of the night.

“She’s got tons of talent, and now she’s arriving at Strikeforce to test herself against the best.
