UFC 146 is going down this Saturday in Las Vegas, and there’s no shortage of expectations surrounding what’s about to transpire there. In the main event of the evening, heavyweight title-holding knockout artist Junior Cigano has a high-caliber Jiu-Jitsu specialist in Frank Mir challenging him for his strap.

With his crisp boxing, to nine out of ten experts the current champ is the odds-on favorite to keep his title—the GRACIEMAG.com team too is convinced another “Cigano” win is imminent.

The opinion is shared by Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, who has the utmost confidence in his friend and boxing coach Luiz Dórea, and his money is on a knockout from the reigning title holder.

“Cigano is a monster of an athlete, and he began his career in Jiu-Jitsu. Rodrigo Artilheiro was with me at the TUF Brazil house, and he mentioned how crazy his endurance is. He’s 28 years old, started at 22—he hasn’t been in MMA long but has already shown what he’s made of. I don’t think this one leaves the first round—Cigano drops him. But even if it does go longer, Cigano is in much better physical shape than Frank Mir,” opined Durinho, echoing statements made by Mir, to whom the longer the fight goes, the better.

If you were in Frank Mir’s place, what would you do? What would you do against a fighter with heavy hands and pinpoint accuracy?

“If I were Mir, I’d try to take him to the ground. I’d try to clinch, get the takedown. I’d try to be Rousimar “Toquinho” in there; I’d attack his heel, and always stay clear of Cigano’s hands. To beat a monster like that, you have to frenetically work at taking it to the ground. I’d work on improving my footwork, get good at faking punches and try capitalizing from the clinch. Training would have to be like this: getting the takedown, working on wrestling and going for the foot when on the ground,” said Gilbert in analysis.

The TUF Brazil participant doesn’t, however, feel Mir will be successful in his mission.

“I expect a first-round knockout from the Brazilian. Cigano’s punching is really crisp, he’s healthier for being younger, he has the confidence from being champion and he does an excellent job. All Cigano has to do is be calm and fight,” wagered the 2011 Jiu-Jitsu lightweight champion of the world.

“I think Frank Mir is going to mess up after the first punch lands. Being the champion, in my opinion Cigano doesn’t even need to press the action; he can just be calm, do his footwork and jab, because the knockout will surface,” said the black belt training partner of Vitor Belfort in closing.

O UFC 146 que rola neste sábado, em Las Vegas, vem cheio de expectativas. No combate principal da noite, o campeão dos pesados e nocauteador Junior Cigano encara o desafiante bom de Jiu-Jitsu Frank Mir.

Dono de um boxe afiadíssimo, o atual campeão é apontado por nove entre dez especialistas como o favorito para esta peleja – a equipe do GRACIEMAG.com também aposta em Cigano, aliás.

Se o chão de Cigano ainda é uma incógnita no UFC, para alguns faixas-pretas de Jiu-Jitsu isso não fará a menor diferença na luta. A verdade é que poucos estão acreditando no queixo de Frank Mir nessa luta.

É o que acha Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, que diz confiar plenamente no amigo e treinador Luiz Dórea e aposta em nocaute do atual campeão.

“O Cigano é um monstro de atleta, e começou a carreira no Jiu-Jitsu. O Rodrigo Artilheiro estava comigo na casa do TUF Brasil e comentou que ele tem um gás sinistro. Ele tem 28 anos, começou com 22, tem pouco tempo de MMA mas já mostrou o seu valor. Eu acho que não passa do primeiro round, o Cigano derruba, mas mesmo se passar as condições físicas do Cigano são bem melhores que a do Frank Mir”, opina Durinho, ecoando declarações de Mir, para quem quanto mais durasse a luta, melhor.

E se você estivesse no lugar do Frank Mir? O que faria contra um lutador de mão pesada e certeira?

“Se eu fosse o Mir, eu tentaria derrubar, tentaria o clinche, a queda. Eu tentaria ser um Rousimar Toquinho ali, atacar o calcanhar, e sempre ficar muito esperto com a mão do Cigano. Para ganhar de um monstro assim, só se você trabalhar freneticamente na movimentação para botar para baixo. Eu teria de melhorar minha movimentação de perna, fintar muito bem e tentar aproveitar o clinche. O treino teria de ser este, botar para quedar, trabalhar o wrestling e no chão embolar no pé”, analisa Gilbert.

O participante do TUF Brasil, no entanto, não acredita que Mir será bem-sucedido na dura missão.

“Minha expectativa é de nocaute no primeiro round para o brasileiro. O Cigano está com a mão muito afiada, tem mais saúde por ser mais novo, tem a confiança de ser o campeão e tem um jogo de perna muito bom, vai ser nocaute. Confio no treinador Luiz Dórea, que fez um excelente trabalho. Basta o Cigano entrar tranquilo para lutar”, aposta o campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu peso leve em 2011.

“Acho que o Frank Mir vai errar depois de entrar o primeiro soco. Como campeão, na minha opinião o Cigano nem precisa buscar a luta, tem de ficar tranquilo, trabalhando seu jogo de perna, jabeando, porque o nocaute vai aparecer”, conclui o faixa-preta parceiro de Vitor Belfort.

This Saturday UFC Fight Night 23, Fights for the Troops 2 will be held in Texas. Although the card doesn’t feature any of the promotion’s biggest stars, there should be no lack of action. The fighters called on for the show tend to put on some lively bouts, which is what really matters in the end.

Former WEC champion Mike Brown, for example, will face black belt Rani Yahya in a bout that could define the future of the two in the organization. While Rani is coming off back-to-back losses while still in the WEC, Brown has lost three of his last five performances.

“Each loss is different, so it’s hard to say. José Aldo was a better fighter and that’s what took me down. I think Manny (Gamburyan) got me on the chin. I feel I’m a better fighter than him, but that’s how fights are. Against Diego Nunes, I had adrenaline dump and wore out early. All of them were dramatic losses and I can’t point out just one thing, understand?” comments Brown on the UFC official website.

“I’m still a monster in the gym. I know it, my training partners know it. I’m not an easy fight for anybody and I’m confident I can beat anyone on any given night. I’m going to knock him out,” he warns.

The the star of the marquee fight of the night is Melvin Guillard, one of the athletes with the most extensive record in the organization, coming off three positive results in a row. His opponent is Evan Dunham, who is coming off his first loss after ten back-to-back wins.

“I told everyone in 2010 that I wanted to win all my fights that year and in 2011 win the title. Now I feel that he (Dunham) is close to a title fight. So, for them to give me this fight, they must feel the same way about me. I’m taking this bout to be one that defines the next challenger. After that, I should fight for the title against (Anthony) Pettis or (Frankie) Edgar, I should have a shot at the title,” wagers Melvin.

And the evening also marks some debuts. Former Shooto World champion Willamy “Chiquerim” Freire is getting his induction into the lightweight mix against Waylon Lowe.

“One time I took a picture holding José Aldo’s belt and everyone joked: ‘Get used to it for when you win yours (laughs)!’ It’s just a joke, but if people believe in me the way I do, I see no problem in imagining a marvelous future in the UFC. Every title I’ve disputed I’ve won. I don’t feel he (Lowe) has anything more than I do, and I never consider the possibility of losing. With faith in God, I’ll get there,” declares Chiquerim.

Chiquerim’s teammate at Nova União Amilcar Alves wants to beat Charlie Brenneman to erase the memory of the loss he suffered on making his UFC debut, when he was armbarred by Mike Pierce.

Comparing Brenneman with Pierce, I expect a good fight because he won’t be able to avoid trading strikes. He can try and take me down, the way Pierce did, but this time I’ll have an answer. This time, Brenneman should worry about facing an aggressive and furious opponent who will fight differently. The keyword is action, not reaction.”

Acontece na noite deste sábado, no Texas, o UFC Fight Nght 23, o Fights for the Troops 2. Apesar de o card não trazer os maiores astros do evento, não deve faltar emoção. Os lutadores escalados costumam fazer lutas emocionantes, o que mais importa no final das contas.

O ex-campeão do WEC Mike Brown, por exemplo, encara o faixa-preta Rani Yahya num combate que pode definir o futuro dos dois na organização. Enquanto Rany vem de duas derrotas, ainda no WEC, Brown perdeu em três das últimas cinco apresentações.

“Cada derrota é diferente, então é difícil dizer. José Aldo foi um lutador melhor e aquilo me derrubou. Eu acho que Manny (Gamburyan) me pegou no queixo. Eu me acho um lutador melhor do que ele, mas as lutas são assim. Contra Diego Nunes, tive uma queda de adrenalina e me cansei cedo. Todas foram derrotas dramáticas e não tenho como destacar apenas uma coisa, entende?”, comenta Brown no site do UFC.

“Continuo sendo um monstro na academia. Eu sei, meus companheiros de treino sabem. Não sou uma luta fácil para ninguém e me sinto confiante em bater qualquer um em qualquer noite. Irei nocauteá-lo”, dispara.

Já o protagonista da luta principal é Melvin Guillard, um dos atletas com cartel mais extenso na organização, vindo de três bons resultados. Seu oponente é Evan Dunham, que vem da primeira derrota depois de dez triunfos seguidos.

“Disse a todos em 2010 que queria vencer todas as lutas no ano e em 2011 conquistar o meu título. Eu sinto agora que ele (Dunham) está próximo da disputa do título. Então, para eles me darem essa luta, devem sentir o mesmo por mim. Levo esse combate como algo que define o próximo desafiante. Depois disso, devo lutar pelo título seja contra o (Anthony) Pettis ou (Frankie) Edgar, devo ter a chance pelo cinturão”, aposta Melvin.

E a noite também é de estreia. Ex-campeão mundial do Shooto, Willamy Freire, o Chiquerim, é uma das apostas no peso leve. A promessa encara Waylon Lowe.

“Uma vez tirei uma foto com cinturão do José Aldo e o povo brincou: ‘Vai se acostumando para quando conquistar o seu (risos)!’. É apenas uma brincadeira, mas se as pessoas acreditam em mim, como acredito , não vejo qualquer problema em visualizar um futuro maravilhoso no UFC. Todo título que disputei ganhei. Não acho que ele (Lowe) tenha mais do que eu, e nunca penso sobre a possibilidade de perder. Com fé em Deus, vou chegar lá”, declara Chiquerim.

Companheiro de equipe de Chiquerim, na Nova União, Amilcar Alves quer vencer Charlie Brenneman para apagar a derrota na primeira apresentação no Ultimate, quando foi finalizado por Mike Pierce.

“Comparando Brenneman com Pierce, espero uma luta boa, porque ele não vai evitar a troca de golpes. Ele pode tentar me derrubar, como Pierce tentou, mas dessa vez terei uma resposta. Dessa vez, Brenneman deve se preocupar em encarar um adversário agressivo e furioso que vai lutar diferente. A palavra é ação, e não reação.”

After being left without an opponent for UFC Fight Night 23 due to Chan Sung Jung getting injured, black belt Rani Yahya now knows who his replacement opponent will be on January 22. The former ADCC champion will face former WEC champion Mike Brown, as confirmed by MMAJunkie.com.

And there’s quite a bit on the line, given the amount of sacking the UFC has been doing lately. Rani is coming off back-to-back losses and needs a win to not run risk of getting fired. Nor has Brown been having the best of times, having lost three of his last five fights, the most recent one on January 1 against Diego Nunes.

Depois de ficar sem oponente para o UFC Fight Night 23, devido à contusão de Chan Sung Jung, o faixa-preta Rani Yahya já tem oponente para o dia 22 de janeiro. O ex-campeão do ADCC encara o ex-campeão de penas do WEC Mike Brown, notícia confirmada pelo site MMAJunkie.

E a luta deve valer bastante numa época de cortes no Ultimate. Rani vem de duas derrotas e precisa da vitória para não ter risco de demissão. Brown também não vem de bons resultados, tendo perdido em três das últimas cinco lutas, a mais recente no dia 1º de janeiro, contra Diego Nunes.

UFC 125 kicked off the promotion’s 2011 season, this Saturday in Las Vegas. In the main event, Frankie Edgar was put through the wringer, but hung on to his lightweight belt. Check out the breakdown of the fights on the main card and the results:

It ended in a draw, but there was no lack of excitement in the fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, a rematch between the two worth the lightweight belt. Following a first cross that dropped Edgar, Maynard pounded mercilessly on the champion throughout the rest of the opening round. The champion seemed done but held out and lived to see a second round, where he began a comeback landing good strikes and a picture-perfect takedown. From there on it was an even match, with a slight advantage to Edgar at certain moments. The fighters traded blows till the final moments. With the cards in and judges’ decision announced after five rounds, one of the authorities picked Maynard, the other Edgar, while the third gave a draw. The overall result was a draw and a second successful title defense for Frankie Edgar.

Brian Stann put an end to Chris Leben’s three-fight win streak. With a combination of well-placed knees and puches, the technical knockout came just 3:37 minutes into the first round.

After a year away from the ring, Thiago Silva did well against Brandon Vera. Brandon had some good moments standing, but Thiago got the takedown in all three rounds. On the ground, the American Top Team representative did well in the ground-and-pound department and in achieving positions of superiority. In the third, Silva worked his way to the back of Vera, whom only defended, and suffered a disfigured nose. Thiago Silva took the unanimous decision for the win.

Dong Hyun Kim and Nate Diaz had an evenly-matched fight. Kim, from Korea, managed to land solid takedowns and did a good job on the ground. Diaz showed better stamina than his opponent in the final round, pressing him up against the fencing. When the scorecards came in, the unanimous-decision win went to Kim, who remains undefeated in fifteen fights. Boos were clearly heard from the crowd.

In the opening fight of the main card, Clay Guida faced off against Japan’s Takanori Gomi. After dominating the first round, Guida sunk a slick guillotine in the second for the finish.

UFC first-timer Diego Nunes faced off against former WEC champion Mike Brown. Diego took a hard-fought split judges’ decision.

O UFC 125 deu início à temporada 2011 da organização neste sábado, em Las Vegas. Na principal luta da noite, Frankie Edgar suou, mas manteve o título de leves. Confira as análises dos combates principais e todos os resultados:

Terminou em empate, mas não faltou emoção na luta entre Frankie Edgar e Gray Maynard, revanche que valia o título de leves. Depois de um soco cruzado, Maynard surrou Edgar na primeira parcial. O campeão parecia entregue, mas resistiu e voltou vivo no segundo round, quando conectou bons golpes e aplicou uma bela queda. Daí em diante, uma luta parelha, com ligeira vantagem de Edgar em alguns momentos. Até os últimos instantes, os lutadores desferiam golpes. Na decisão dos jurados, depois de cinco assaltos, uma escolha foi para Maynard, a outra para Edgar, enquanto a outra papeleta anotou empate. Prevaleceu o empate como resultado, o que mantém o cinturão com Frankie Edgar.

Brian Stann acabou com uma série de três vitórias de Chris Leben. Tendo combinado bem joelhadas e socos, chegou ao nocaute técnico no primeiro round, em apenas 3min37s.

Há um ano afastado do octagon, Thiago Silva foi bem contra Brandon Vera. Brandon conseguiu bons momentos na trocação, mas Thiago quedou nos três rounds. No chão, o representante da American Top Team trabalhou bem no ground and pound e conquistou posições de superioridade. Na terceira parcial, Silva trabalhou nas costas de Vera, que apenas se defendeu, com nariz quebrado. Triunfo por decisão unânime para Thiago Silva.

Dong Hyun Kim e Nate Diaz fizeram um combate parelho. Kim, da Coréia, conseguiu boas quedas e trabalhou bem no chão. Diaz mostrou mais gás na último round, e prensou o oponente nas grades. Na decisão dos jurados, vitória por unanimidade para Kim, que segue invicto em 15 lutas. Na torcida, muitas vaias.

Na primeira luta do card principal, Clay Guida tinha pela frente o japonês Takanori Gomi. Depois de dominar no primeiro round, Guida usou bem a guilhotina no segundo assalto para finalizar.

Estreante no UFC, Diego Nunes encarou Mike Brown, ex-campeão de penas do WEC. Num combate duríssimo, a vitória foi para Diego por decisão dividida dos jurados.
