The black belt pan and world champ, GMA member Walter Cascao Vital will in Troy, Michigan next month for a seminar. Traveling from his Las Vegas academy, Cascao Jiu-Jitsu, the third degree black belt will be spreading his knowledge of the art that he has gathered from over 20 years of experience.

You can catch Cascao on Saturday, June 14 starting at 1 p.m. at Victorious MMA located at 444 West Maple Rd, Suite A Troy, MI 48084. The cost will be $60 per person.

Quando você briga para evitar a passagem de guarda e cai na posição de quatro apoios, você não está 100% a salvo, ainda.

Um dos caminhos é não cair na posição, e catar logo as pernas do parceiro para cair por cima. Caso não dê certo, é hora de aprender a se defender virado para o chão.

O adversário pode pegar suas costas, catar seu pescoço no relógio, jogar o peso em cima da sua nuca, entre outros ataques e sufocos. O que fazer? Como se defender?

O faixa-preta Sean Bansfield, nosso GMA em Ann Arbor, Michigan, mostra no vídeo a seguir como se proteger na posição. A primeira recomendação é virar com segurança quando o oponente enfiar o primeiro gancho, e assim ceder a meia-guarda (1min01s).

Outra opção, quando o oponente estiver mirando seu pescoço na norte-sul, é quebrar a pegada dele e rolar para cair por cima (2min05s).

A terceira é uma posição que simboliza a essência do Jiu-Jitsu: sem fazer força, o professor simplesmente se senta (3min20s) e chega com suavidade para as costas do lutador que o atacava.

Na quarta e quinta, Sean ensina a movimentar-se para a frente para tentar ganhar um espaço e escapar do incômodo.

When you’re fighting to keep your guard from getting passed and you end up on all fours, you know you’re not in the clear, yet.

One of the routes to take is to not get stuck there: grab the opponent’s leg and land on top. If that doesn’t work, it’s time to learn to defend while facing downwards.

The opponent can take your back, catch you in a clock choke, bear his weight down on the back of your neck, or do a whole assortment of other unpleasantries to you. What do you do? How do you defend?

In the following video, the black belt Sean Bansfield, a GMA of ours in Ann Arbor, Michigan, shows how to protect yourself in the position. At minute 1:01 he recommends turning safely when the opponent sticks the first hook in, thus conceding half-guard.

Another option, for when the opponent has your neck in his sights while in north-south position, is to break his grip and roll for top position—as in minute 2:05.

The third, at minute 3:20, is to rely on a position that embodies Jiu-Jitsu’s essence: without using any force at all, the Jiu-Jitsu professor simply sits and smoothly slides to the back of the fighter who was attacking him.

In the fourth and fifth variations, Sean teaches how to move forward to try to gain ground and avoid getting roughed up.

The top dog in world MMA is going a thousand miles per hour in getting things ready for UFC 123, headlined by Lyoto Machida against Quinton Jackson and BJ Penn versus Matt Hughes, this Saturday in Detroit.

O clima foi tranquilo entre os protagonistas da principal luta do evento, Lyoto Machida e Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, que arrancaram risadas de BJ Penn e Matt Hughes, que fazem a segunda luta principal.

“Quero o meu cinturão de volta, seria legal”, admite Rampage, ex-campeão da categoria de meio-pesados.

Lyoto, que também deteve o cinturão, quer o título de volta, mas foca apenas no combate de sábado.  

“Quero o cinturão, lógico, mas não estou pensando nisso agora. Só penso na minha próxima luta”, diz.

Ambos os lutadores vêm de derrota, mas isso não incomoda.

“Não me importo com a pressão. Acho que tive uma boa performance na última luta. Gosto de lutar e de dar show. É uma das razões para eu lutar, gosto e entreter as pessoas e fazer lutas excitantes. Sempre respeitei o Lyoto, mas sempre quero lutas excitantes e não lutar por pontos”, diz Jackson, que aproveita para criticar a arbitragem do MMA nos EUA, regida pelas comissões de boxe.  

“Amo o MMA, mas acredito que não temos os melhores juízes. MMA é diferente, há técnicas de boxe, wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu…”, prossegue.

Lyoto deve ter torcida contra no sábado, nada que o preocupe.

“Estou acostumado, porque sempre lutei fora do meu país e fora da minha cidade. Na verdade, apesar de não ser, eu me sinto em casa lutando aqui”, diz.

Perguntado sobre os conselhos que Junior Cigano deu nos treinamentos para enfrentar Rampage, Machida preferiu manter mistério.  

“Prefiro nem falar, porque isso já faz parte da minha estratégia. Sábado vocês vão ver.”

A resposta seca do ex-campeão não escapou das gozações de Rampage, que brincou com o repórter e fez todos rirem.  

“A primeira pergunta foi boa, você vinha bem, mas deveria ter parado!”.

The mood was laid back between the event’s headliners, Lyoto Machida and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who drew laughs from the stars of the co-main event, BJ Penn and Matt Hughes.

“I want my belt back, that would be nice,” admitted Rampage, the former champion of the light heavyweight division.

Lyoto, who once held the title himself, wants it back but is focused only on Saturday’s fight.

“Of course I want to the belt back, but I’m not thinking about that right now. I’m only thinking about my next fight,” he says.

Both fighters are coming off losses, but that doesn’t bother them.

“I don’t care about the pressure. I feel I had a good performance in my last fight. I like fighting and putting on a show. It’s one of the reasons I fight, I like entertaining people and having exciting fights. I always respected Lyoto, but I want to have exciting fights and not fight for points,” says Jackson, who took the opportunity to criticize MMA judges in the USA, where they are governed by boxing commissions.

“I love MMA, but I feel we don’t have the best judges. MMA is different, there are boxing, wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu techniques…” he continues.

The crowd will likely be against Lyoto on Saturday, but it’s nothing that worries him.

“I’m used to it because I always fought away from my country and my city. The truth is that I feel at home fighting here, even though I’m not,” he says.

Asked whether the pointers Junior Cigano game him in training to face Rampage, Machida preferred to keep it a mystery.

“I’d rather not say, because now it’s part of my strategy. You’ll see on Saturday.”

Machida’s dry response didn’t escape the humor of Rampage, who joked with the reporter, provoking laughs.

“The first question was good, you were doing well, but you should have stopped!”

O próximo sábado promete grandes lutas em Michigan, no UFC 123. Na luta principal da noite, os ex-campeões da categoria meio-pesado Lyoto Machida e Quinton “Rampage” Jackson combatem com a perspectiva de voltar a disputar o título, que vai ser definido entre o atual campeão Maurício Shogun e Rashad Evans.

Um dos grandes ídolos nos EUA, Rampage também ataca como ator, tendo encenado o BA do filme “Esquadrão Classe A”, recentemente. No entanto, o lutador não se restringe apenas à telona dos cinemas, tendo sido caracterizado e emprestado a voz ao desenho animado “The Cleveland Show”.

Next Saturday in Michigan promises action galore, with UFC 123. In the headlining fight, former light heavyweight champions Lyoto Machida and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson do battle in hopes of returning to contention for the title to be decided between current champion Maurício Shogun and Rashad Evans.

A big star in the USA, Rampage also does some acting work, having recently starred in the A-Team remake movie. However, the fighter doesn’t restrict himself only to the big screens of cinemas, having done voice work in The Cleveland Show cartoon.

Rampage’s acting in the cartoon can be seen in the video below. Now, whether the fighter is prepared for his fight with Machida, we’ll find out Saturday.

Next up on Hughes’s calendar for his 53^rd fight – 45 wins and seven losses –, he has a date with an old acquaintance: BJ Penn. The showdown is set November 20 in Michigan, at UFC 123.

The two have faced off on two occasions. On the first, at UFC 46 in January 2004, Penn won by first-round rear-naked choke, taking Hughes’s welterweight title. The next time around Hughes evened the score, winning by second-round knockout at UFC 63 in September 2006.

Tough task for BJ, who is coming off back-to-back losses to Frankie Edgar, who put an end to Penn’s right at lightweight. The matchup with Hughes, to be at welterweight, is a great opportunity for BJ to get back on his feet.

The bout is set to be the co-main event under headlining Quinton Jackson vs Lyoto Machida.

No próximo desafio de Hughes, sua 53ª luta – são 45 vitórias e sete derrotas -, um velho conhecido vai estar pela frente: BJ Penn. O embate acontece no UFC 123, em Michigan, no dia 20 de novembro.

Ambos já se enfrentaram em duas oportunidades. Na primeira, no UFC 46, em janeiro de 2004, Penn levou a melhor por finalização, com um mata-leão no primeiro round. Depois, Hughes deu o troco, com um nocaute no UFC 63, em setembro de 2006.

Parada dura para BJ, que vem de duas derrotas para Frankie Edgar, o que pôs abaixo o reinado na categoria de leves. O confronto contra Hughes, a ser disputado no peso meio-médio, é uma grande oportunidade de dar a volta por cima.
