The Copacabana room at the JW Marriott hotel, on the Rio de Janeiro waterfront, usually houses chairs, a bunch of jackets and slides for business meetings. At the beginning of December, however, it was with mats, dozens of bottles of water and cupts of yerba mate, as well as the beautiful view of the beach. The GRACIEMAG team arrived at the hotel in the final moments of the no-gi class taught by Caio Terra to the more than 60 students of their camp, practitioners and competitors from the USA, Japan and Russia.

Apart from the main teacher, lessons were also given by Kim Land, Rudson Mateus, and a certain featherweight that walked through the corners of the mat. Less-trained eyes would surely miss the sitting two-time world champion Michael Musumeci, with his reserved ways.

With a wave, our reporter tried to get a chat going. Musumeci gave us nothing, but after replacing his pair of glasses, he was nicer. “I did not see you!” said the short-sighted Musumeci apologetically.

Currently 22 years old, Musumeci (Muzumichi is how it’s pronounced) has long been chasing the dream of being a Jiu-Jitsu world champion. His journey began in 2012 with the first gold in the blue belt, and every subsequent year he was at the top of the podium — until, in 2017, the American got tangled up with João Miyao to win the World Championship as a black belt. What is the best moment of his life? Actually, no.

“I did not feel happy or fulfilled,” said Musumeci, to the astonishment of those who listened. “I worked hard to get there that day, since I was 12 years old, and I did not enjoy it, I was not happy, I got it and I thought, what I do with my life now, I had so much in my head and just like that it was the end. One week after the World Cup I had no desire to do anything else, to train or wear the gi, I was depressed, I thought I was never going to compete again. It was very traumatic. I’m introverted, I had never done a super-fight, and all the spotlights on me at that moment, they brought me a bad feeling.”

“But it all changed as soon as I talked to Caio and other close people,” he says. “I put it into my head that I would train for fun only, without the pressure of competing or winning. go to church and train to have fun. My nervousness is gone and I have become a much better athlete.

“If you look at my two versions of the title, in 2017 and 2018, they are two different athletes. In 2017 I was serious, stiff. So nervous that I could hardly think or enjoy it, I just do not say it was the worst tournament of my life because I I won. At the Worlds this year I was calm, smiling, I was having fun, I put it on my head that if it was to win or lose I wanted to have fun without pressure. And it was the best tournament of my life.

“In the final against Ary Farias, for example, my mind was disconnected. I was not there, it was like I was watching from the stands. When I returned to consciousness I was on Ary’s back. I did not know how I had done that, I felt I could get the finish, there were three minutes left on the clock, but I wanted to take advantage of that moment that I had not had in 2017. It was very cool.”

After remembering with affection the moments from the 2018 Worlds, our team went to lunch with Musumeci, Caio, Rudson and the athletes of the camp. For Musumeci, nothing but rice, beans and farofa, in two deep dishes, with few pieces of meat. “I’m only eating this for a week, I love rice and beans, and incredible as it may seem, I lost four pounds!” The food in Brazil is very healthy, unlike processed foods in the U.S. Açaí as well — it’s the best in the world!”

A sala Copacabana do hotel JW Marriott, na orla do Rio de Janeiro, costuma abrigar cadeiras, uma penca de engravatados e slides para reuniões de negócios. No início de dezembro, contudo, estava com tatames, dezenas de garrafas de água e copos de mate, além da bela vista para a praia. A equipe GRACIEMAG chegou ao hotel nos momentos finais da aula sem kimono ministrada por Caio Terra para os mais de 60 alunos de seu camp, praticantes e competidores vindos dos EUA, Japão e Rússia.

Fora o professor principal, as aulas também era dadas por Kim Terra, Rudson Mateus e um certo peso-pluma que caminhava pelos cantos do tatame. Olhos menos treinados certamente deixariam passar batido o atual bicampeão mundial Michael Musumeci, com seu jeito reservado.

Com um abano, nossa reportagem “tentou” trazer o mesmo para um papo. Musumeci não deu bola, mas depois de recolocar seu par de óculos o mesmo ficou mais simpático. “Não enxerguei você!”, disse em tom de desculpas o míope dono de uma visão ampla de Jiu-Jitsu.

Hoje com 22 anos, Musumeci (fala-se Muzumichi) correu desde novinho atrás do sonho de ser campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu. Sua jornada começou em 2012, com o primeiro ouro no juvenil faixa-azul, e todos os anos seguintes foram no topo do pódio – até que, em 2017, o americano se embolou com João Miyao para conquistar o Mundial como faixa-preta. Se foi sua maior felicidade da vida? Pior que não, ao contrário.

“Eu não me senti feliz ou realizado”, disse Musumeci, para espanto daqueles que ouviam. “Trabalhei muito para chegar naquele dia, desde os 12 anos de idade, e não aproveitei nada. Não estava feliz. Consegui e pensei, o que faço da minha vida agora? Eu tinha tanta coisa na cabeça, e do nada era o fim. Uma semana depois do Mundial eu não tinha vontade de fazer mais nada, de treinar ou vestir o kimono. Eu estava deprimido, achei que nunca mais ia competir. Foi muito traumático. Eu sou introvertido, nunca tinha feito uma superluta, e todos os holofotes em mim naquele momento me trouxeram uma sensação ruim.

“Mas tudo mudou assim que conversei com o Caio e outras pessoas próximas”, revela a fera. “Pus na cabeça que ia treinar por diversão apenas, sem a pressão de competir ou vencer. Quando eu era criança eu treinava por hobby. Comecei a ir para a igreja e treinar para me divertir. Meus nervosismos sumiram e me tornei um atleta muito melhor.

“Se você reparar minhas duas versões do título, em 2017 e 2018, são dois atletas diferentes. Em 2017 eu estava sério, travado. Tão nervoso que mal conseguia pensar ou aproveitar. Só não digo que foi o pior torneio da minha vida porque eu ganhei. No Mundial deste ano eu estava tranquilo, sorrindo. Eu estava me divertindo. Coloquei na cabeça que se fosse para ganhar ou perder eu queria me divertir, sem pressão. E foi o melhor torneio da minha vida.

“Na final contra o Ary Farias, por exemplo, a minha mente se desligou. Eu não estava ali, era como se estivesse vendo a luta da arquibancada. Quando retomei a consciência estava nas costas do Ary. Eu não sabia como tinha feito aquilo, estava em outro mundo, viajando. Na filmagem olhei em volta, sem saber como tinha feito aquilo. Senti que poderia buscar a finalização, faltavam três minutos no cronômetro da final, mas eu queria aproveitar aquele momento que eu não tinha curtido em 2017. Foi muito legal.”

Depois de lembrar com carinho dos momentos no Mundial de 2018, nossa equipe foi almoçar com Musumeci, Caio, Rudson e os atletas do camp. Para Musumeci, nada além de arroz, feijão e farofa, em dois pratos fundos, com poucos pedaços de carne. “Estou comendo só isso por uma semana, eu amo arroz com feijão. E, por incrível que pareça, perdi dois quilos! A comida no Brasil é muito saudável, diferente dos alimentos processados dos EUA. O açaí também, é o melhor do mundo!”

Twenty-year-old Michael Musumeci has written his name in the history of BJJ. Back in 2000, BJ Penn was the first American to win a world championship at Tijuca Tennis Club, in Rio. In 2005 Robert Drysdale got there. In 2007, with the Worlds having already moved to the U.S., it was Rafael Lovato’s turn. And now, ten years after that, Musumeci has become only the fourth American to reach the top of the gentle art.

To achieve his light featherweight title, Musumeci beat four elite adversaries, like 2016 finalist Ary Farias, and João Miyao, an old rival that Mikey ended up meeting in the final.

Graciemag caught up with Musumeci this week. “This was my dream since I was 10 years old, and I am just so happy…” he said. “It feels fake like a dream.”

He added: “This was the fifth time João and me fought, and my fifth victory with him. Every match we have is always a war. I always try, when I’m fighting, to make very little room for opportunity for my opponent. I was able to fight a smart match and secure my first world title.”

Now Musumeci claims his next goal is to become a two-time champion. “Time now to fix my mistakes from this year, rest my body and mind a little and just learn more positions to add to my jiu-jitsu for 2018!” he says.

Aos 20 anos de idade, o jovem Michael Musumeci escreveu seu nome na história do Jiu–Jitsu. No ano de 2000, BJ Penn se sagrou como o primeiro americano a conquistar o título Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, no Tijuca Tênis Clube. Em 2005, foi a vz de Robert Drysdale. Já em 2007, Rafael Lovato repetiu a façanha, já com o Mundial nos EUA. 10 anos depois, Musumeci se tornou o quarto americano a alcançar o topo do mundo na arte suave, o mais novo dentre as feras.

Para chegar à conquista no peso-pluma, Musumeci venceu quatro oponentes da elite, como Ary Farias, finalista no ano passado, e João Miyao, velho conhecido dos tatames que Mikey acabou por superar na finalíssima, com 4 a 2 nas vantagens após 0 a 0 nos pontos.

Nosso repórter Eduardo Ferreira conversou com o craque, e este ressaltou que tudo ainda parece um sonho de menino que não se mistura bem com a realidade.

“Ser campeão mundial era o meu sonho desde os 10 anos de idade. Eu estou muito feliz! É tudo tão surreal que eu pareço estar sonhando ainda”, disse o jovem pupilo de Caio Terra que comentou também sobre seu duelo final contra Miyao.

“Essa foi a quinta vez que nós nos enfrentamos e foi minha quinta vitória sobre ele. Toda a luta que fazemos é uma guerra. Meu objetivo é sempre deixar pouco ou nenhum espaço para o meu adversário se sentir confortável e poder aplicar o jogo dele. Foi capaz de fazer uma luta inteligente com ele e garantir meu título mundial.”

Ao ser perguntado sobre o próximo passo após conquistar o título maior do Jiu-Jiutsu competitivo, Mikey não pensou duas vezes: acertar os detalhes no jogo e repetir a medalha que acabara de conquistar, no ano que vem.

“Meu próximo objetivo é conquistar meu segundo título mundial na faixa-preta. Por agora, pretendo corrigir minhas falhas, descansar o meu corpo e continuar a aprender posições e acrescentar armas no meu Jiu-Jitsu para 2018!”

Michael Musumeci has made it to the exclusive group of non-Brazilian world jiu-jitsu champions. The Caio Terra Association athlete joins BJ Penn (2000) and Rafael Lovato Jr. (2007), the other two American* fighters to have gotten there since the Worlds’ first edition in 1996.

Musumeci made history by beating the light featherweight field. The American from Marlboro, New Jersey used solid strategy against his archrival João Miyao and beat him for a fifth consecutive time. This win came by advantages, but at the end he sank a foot lock, avoided the points from the sweep and set the Pyramid on fire.

Mikey, que recentemente se juntou a equipe Caio Terra Association, aplicou o antijogo necessário para bater o valente brasileiro Miyao, que não sabia o que era perder um duelo há tempos.
