Radicado no estado norte-americano do Texas, nosso GMI Alex Martins, da AMBJJ, tem motivos de sobra para comemorar. Após o complicado período de restrições da pandemia, o faixa-preta chegou com tudo aos tatames do Miami Open e levou o ouro na competição, brilhando entre os pesos médios e no absoluto master 3.

Com outro evento já na mira, Alex bateu um papo com a equipe GRACIEMAG sobre os desafios que encarou tanto no período de isolamento quanto em seu retorno às competições. Confira nas linhas abaixo e absorva lições valiosas de quem se superou lutando. Oss!

GRACIEMAG: Como a AMBJJ lidou com a pandemia?

ALEX MARTINS: No início, tivemos bastante dificuldade. Por conta do distanciamento social e o isolamento necessários para conter o vírus, as nossas aulas foram feitas através de videoconferências. Nosso objetivo era manter o foco e a disciplina dos nossos alunos enquanto eles se mantinham em atividade em suas residências. Fizemos reuniões, drills e discutimos técnicas, tudo por meio do vídeo.

Com a progressão da pandemia, foram implementadas medidas de flexibilização que permitiram a reabertura de certos estabelecimentos. Como foi esse período para sua academia?

Aqui no Texas, temos um governador muito capaz e com uma compreensão imensa. Após quatro meses em isolamento, ele conseguiu abrir o estado e nossa academia foi reaberta. Obviamente, nós tivemos uma lista de observações e precauções que precisávamos seguir para manter ela em funcionamento, como distanciamento social e limite de ocupação. Desta forma, nós reduzimos as classes e dividimos os horários, mas mantivemos as atividades. Por conta do distanciamento, nós fazíamos apenas alongamentos, mas após cerca de um mês, conseguimos implementar aulas em dupla. Dois meses após a reabertura, voltamos a fazer os rolas normais, mas apenas em grupos de dois ou três, de forma a mantermos o controle caso alguém se infectasse.

Como ficaram os treinos competitivos nesse período?

No fim de 2020, conseguimos retomar um nível legal de treinamento com a divisão das faixas e passamos a dar mais foco às competições. A IBJJF já havia voltado com os eventos alguns meses antes, mas nós preferimos conversar bastante, entrar em um acordo para treinar de forma segura e disciplinada, e voltar com tudo para os torneios quando estivéssemos prontos.

Você foi campeão recentemente no Miami Open 2021. Como foi retornar aos tatames competitivos?

Foi difícil, mas eu decidi lutar nesse evento sabendo que seria um desafio. O Miami Open recebe muitos atletas da Flórida, que é um lugar que tem muitas academias fortes. Eu estava ciente disso, então treinei bastante e consegui ser campeão duas vezes, peso e absoluto. Ao todo, lutei seis vezes, sendo que quatro das vitórias foram por finalização e duas ficaram nos pontos. Foi uma experiência gratificante para mim e estou bem feliz com o meu resultado.

Já está de olho em outro torneio?

Vou participar do American National, que vai rolar entre os dias 24 e 26 de junho, em Las Vegas. A minha categoria está complicada, com vários nomes perigosos, mas eu gosto assim mesmo. Quanto mais adversários fortes, mais eu me sinto motivado a treinar. Além desse evento, também quero participar do Pan em setembro, mas estou mantendo meu foco no American National.

Based in the US state of Texas, Alex Martins, from AMBJJ, has plenty of reasons to celebrate. After the complicated period of restrictions of the pandemic, the black belt hit the Miami Open mats with all his strength and scored gold in the competition, shining among the middleweights and in the master 3 absolute.

With another event already in sight, Alex chatted with the GRACIEMAG team about the challenges he faced both in the isolation period and in his return to competition. Check the lines below and absorb valuable lessons from those who excelled in fighting. Oss!

GRACIEMAG: How did AMBJJ deal with the pandemic?

ALEX MARTINS: At the beginning, we had a lot of difficulties. Due to the social distance and isolation necessary to contain the virus, our classes were held through videoconferences. Our goal was to keep our students focused and disciplined while they stayed active in their homes. We held meetings, drills, and discussed techniques, all through video.

As the pandemic progressed, flexibility measures were implemented that allowed the reopening of certain establishments. How was this period for your gym?

Here in Texas, we have a very capable governor with immense understanding. After four months in isolation, he managed to open the state and our academy reopened. We had a list of observations and precautions we needed to follow to keep it going, such as social distance and occupancy limits. In this way, we reduced the classes and divided the times, but kept the activities. Due to the distance, we only did stretches, but after about a month, we were able to implement classes in pairs. Two months after the reopening, we went back to doing the regular sparring, but only in groups of two or three, to maintain control in case someone got infected.

How was the competitive training during this period?

At the end of 2020, we were able to return to a good level of training with the division of belts, so we started to give more focus to competitions. The IBJJF had already come back with events a few months before, but we preferred to talk it through, agreed to train in a safe and disciplined way, and come back to tournaments when we were ready.

You were recently champion at the Miami Open 2021. What was it like to return to competitive mats?

It was difficult, but I decided to fight in this event knowing it would be a challenge. The Miami Open welcomes many athletes from Florida, which is a place that has many strong gyms. I was aware of that, so I trained a lot and managed to be champion twice, weight and open class. In all, I fought six times, four of the victories were by submission and two were in points. It was a rewarding experience for me and I am very happy with my result.

Have your eyes on another tournament yet?

I’m going to participate in the American National, which will take place between June 24th and 26th, in Las Vegas. My category will be difficult, with several challenging athletes, but I like it anyway. The more strong opponents, the more I feel motivated to train. In addition to this event, I also want to participate in the Pan in September, but I am keeping my focus on the American National.
