A former WEC champion and UFC lightweight title challenger, Hermes França is one of the headliners for the upcoming International Fighting Championship (IFC) event in Recife, Brazil. Before heading home, though, the black belt put on a show at MFC29 last Friday in Ontario, Canada.

The Brazilian put on a crisp display of boxing in his fight, with a right bomb sending the American to the ground. He then followed up with ground and pound for good measure, winning his second fight in a row. The result adds further excitement to the April 29 event where big names from the MMA world like Gregor Gracie, Paulo Filho, and Ronys Torres will be doing battle.

Ex-campeão do WEC e já tendo até disputado o cinturão de leves do UFC, Hermes França é um dos destaques do International Fighting Championship (IFC), evento que promete agitar Recife. No entanto, antes disso, o faixa-preta deu show no evento MFC 29, que rolou na última sexta-feira, em Ontário, no Canadá.

Contra Robert Washington, o cearense mostrou que está com o boxe afiado. Acertou uma bomba de direita que derrubou o americano. O nocaute foi sacramentado com mais alguns socos no ground and pound e, com o resultado, Hermes chega à segunda vitória seguida. Vê-lo em ação é mais uma razão para o público de Pernambuco lotar o Centro de Convenções. O IFC, no dia 29 de abril, ainda conta com feras como Gregor Gracie, Paulo Filho e Ronys Torres.

De volta ao evento do Canadá, na disputa do cinturão dos meio-médios o brasileiro Douglas Lima foi rápido no gatilho e, com pouco mais de um minuto de luta, obteve um nocaute técnico sobre Terry Martin, mantendo o título do evento. Já Dhiego Lima, que é irmão de Douglas, também fez bonito, tendo finalizado Josh Taveirne no terceiro giro, com um mata-leão. O lutador de 21 anos está invicto no MMA, com seis triunfos em seis combates.

Ex-campeão peso leve do WEC, o cearense Hermes França fechou contrato com o evento Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC). O ex-UFC integrará o time dos pesos leves e já tem compromisso agendado.

O faixa-preta, que fez as pazes com a vitória depois de quatro derrotas consecutivas e um no contest, com a finalização sobre Jorge Sarat com um arm-lock no evento G-Force Fights, enfrentará o também ex-UFC Drew Fickett. A luta acontece no dia 8 de abril, em Windsor, Ontário, Canadá.

Além de Hermes e Fickett, estarão presentes no card o brasileiro Douglas Lima e os ex-lutadores do Ultimate Marvin Eastman, David Heath, Marcus Davis e Martin Terry.

Former WEC lightweight champion Hermes França signed a deal with the Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) event. The former UFC fighter will join the team’s lightweight roster.

The black belt, who rediscovered victory after a string of four losses and a no contest, with his armbar win over Jorge Sarat at G-Force Fights, will face another former UFC fighter, Drew Fickett. The bout is set for April 8 in Windsor, Ontario.

Besides Hermes and Fickett, Marvin Eastman, David Heath, Marcus Davis and Martin Terry join the former-UFC-fighter lineup.

Escalado para fazer a luta principal, Glover Teixeira não estará mais na quinta edição do First Class Fight, marcada para o dia 23 de outubro. Mas essa nova mudança no card do show não é por motivo de contusão. Valorizado por sua boa sequência, com vitórias no Bitetti Combat e na Austrália, ele acertou com o Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC), principal torneio de MMA do Canadá.

“Essa é uma grande oportunidade na carreira do Glover. Ele vai disputar o cinturão dos meio-pesados do torneio contra o Ryan Jimmo. Rescindimos nosso contrato com o FCF de forma amigável. Vamos pagar a multa rescisória e fazemos questão de agradecer a oportunidade que foi dada pelo FCF”, explicou o empresário do lutador, Jorge Guimarães (Joinha).

Glover Teixeira, que vem de oito vitórias consecutivas, lamentou o cancelamento da luta no FCF, mas agradeceu a vitrine dada pelo evento.

“Já estava no final da preparação para enfrentar o Pezão, mas apareceu essa chance única e tive de pegar. Lamento não poder fazer essa luta, mas ainda espero ter uma nova chance de estar no FCF.”

Apesar da perda, os organizadores do evento aproveitaram para desejar sorte ao lutador. “É coisa que acontece. Mostra a força do FCF, a força do mercado do MMA e quanto as relações entre lutadores e eventos estão se tornando cada vez mais profissionais. Agora desejamos apenas muito sucesso ao Glover e que ele traga mais esse cinturão para o Brasil”, disse Roberto Godoi, organizador e idealizador do FCF.

Agora, a organização do First Class Fight procura um novo adversário para Marco Antonio Pezão na quinta edição do evento. “Podem ter certeza que vamos manter um card em alto nível. Estamos em busca de um rival à altura para Pezão. Já temos alguns nomes, mas vamos divulgar apenas quando fecharmos”, completou Godoi.

Called up to figure in the main event, Glover Teixeira will no longer be able to make it to the October 23 First Class Fight event. The change to the card is not due to injury, though. In high regard for the string of wins he is riding from his participation at Bitetti Combat events and in Australia, Glover has sealed a deal with the Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) promotion, Canada’s main MMA event.

“This is a great opportunity in Glover’s career. He’s going to fight for the light heavyweight belt against Ryan Jimmo. We rescinded our contract with FCF amicably. We’ll pay the fine and we are very thankful to FCF for the opportunity they gave us,” explains the fighter’s manager Jorge “Joinha” Guimarães.

Glover Teixeira, who has racked up eight wins in a row, regrets having to cancel his fight at FCF, but was thankful for the showcase the event would have provided.

“I was in the final stretch in preparing for my fight with Pezão, but this chance came up and I had to take it. I regret not being able to do this fight, but I hope to get another chance to be in FCF someday.”

Despite the hit losing Teixeira represents, the promoters made a point of wishing the fighter good luck. “It happens. It shows FCF’s strength, the MMA market’s strength, and how the relationship between fighters and events is becoming ever more professional. Now we with Glover lots of success and hope he brings yet another title back to Brazil,” said Roberto Godoi, the promoter and founder of FCF.

Now, the First Class Fight organization is looking for a new opponent for Marco Antonio Pezão for the fifth installment of the event. “You can be sure we’ll maintain the high level of the card. We’re looking for an opponent who is on par with Pezão. We already have a few names, but we’ll only announce who it is once the deal is sealed,” said Godoi in finshing.

Thales Leites venceu na noite desta sexta-feira a terceira luta seguida desde que saiu do UFC. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu da Nova União finalizou com um armlock do triângulo em apenas 2min27s de luta no MFC 25. Quem sofreu com o chão do brasileiro foi Jesse Taylor. 

Em outra luta principal, melhor para Ryan Jimmo, que derrotou o também ex-UFC Wilson Gouveia. Gouveia já havia tido dificuldades, quando não conseguiu bater o peso combinado na balança. A luta foi decidida pelos juízes, em decisão unânime.

As he told GRACIEMAG.com previously, Thales Leites will have a shot at winning the belt at Canadian mixed martial arts event Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC). The Jiu-Jitsu black belt, coming off a win over ground-fighting stalward Dean Lister in the organization, confirmed the title bout.

“I fight for the belt in Canada on April 9. I still have three options for the confrontation. The event will decide between Bryan Baker, Jason MacDonald and Travis Lutter. Now I know the date, I just don’t know the opponent. I hope by the end of the month they’ll let me know so I’ll be able to focus. I’ve already started preparations and will increase the intensity gradually. I’m stepping it up, “says Thales.

For the challenge, the Andre Pederneiras pupil will again count on the support of Josuel Distak to get him ready. Additionally, Paulo Filho, another Distak-trained fighter,  should provide Thales some extra help.

“Beyond with Nova União, I’m also working with Distak, an excellent teacher who’s helping me a lot. Although I have never  trained with Paulão, before my last fight, against Dean Lister, I was outwith an injured rib and he was hitting the pads at the gym. He sat beside me and gave me several pointers. So I’m really thankful for the help. We’ll surely train together and that’s what I want, an exchange. I deeply respect Paulão, who’s a tough guy. When I started training he was already a champion, so I must take my hat off to him. I have a lot to learn, “concludes Leites.

Como já havia dito ao GRACIEMAG.com (veja aqui), Thales Leites terá a chance pelo cinturão do Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC), evento canadense de MMA. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, que vem de vitória sobre a fera na luta de chão Dean Lister na organização, confirmou quando combate pelo título. 

“Luto no dia 9 de abril pelo cinturão, no Canadá. Ainda tenho três opções para o confronto. O evento decidirá entre o Bryan Baker, Jason MacDonald ou Travis Lutter. Agora já sei a data, apenas não sei o adversário. Espero que, até o final do mês, eles me digam para poder me focar. Já comecei a preparação e vou aumentando gradativamente. Vou intensificando”, diz Thales. 

Para o desafio, o pupilo de André Pederneiras contará novamente com o suporte de Josuel Distak nos aprontos. Além disso, Paulo Filho, que também é treinado com Distak, deve dar uma ajuda extra a Thales. 

“Além da Nova União, estou também trabalhando com o Distak, que é um excelente professor e está me ajudando bastante. Ainda não treinei com o Paulão, mas, antes da minha última luta, contra o Dean Lister, estava com a costela machucada e ele batia manopla na academia. Ele sentou ao meu lado e me deu vários toques. Então agradeço muito à ajuda. Com certeza treinaremos juntos e é isso o que eu quero, o intercâmbio. Respeito muito o Paulão, que é um casca-grossa. Quando comecei a treinar ele já era um campeão, então tenho que tirar o chapéu para ele. Tenho muito o que aprender”, finaliza Leites.

Como foi a luta com o Dean Lister?

Foi boa. Já tinha colocado na minha cabeça que seria mais agressivo e que procuraria a luta em pé também. Foi o que eu fiz, procurei trabalhar bem o chute na cocha dele e entraram vários. O Lister é um cara bastante perigoso e sabia que tentaria me derrubar e ir para uma chave de joelho ou calcanhar, é um cara com chão refinado. Ele tentava me derrubar e trabalhei bem as cotoveladas e os socos com a mão esquerda. Tinha que me defender das quedas dele, mas, na verdade, não fiquei em perigo em nenhum momento. Trabalhei bem em pé e no chão.

Quando luta novamente?

Tenho mais uma luta em contrato com o evento, que deve ser em fevereiro ou começo de março. Não sei se será com o Bryan Baker Jason MacDonald ou Travis Lutter. Provavelmente com o Baker, pelo cinturão. Na minha categoria lá, acho que não há um campeão. Vi pessoas com cinturão em outras divisões de peso, então eu e o Baker seríamos dois postulantes a esse título, que está vago. Isso foi comentado na coletiva de imprensa. Entretanto, a disputa pode ser contra qualquer um dos três que citei (no site da organização, comentam a possibilidade de ser contra MacDonald).

O Canadá tem muitos fãs de MMA. Como foi o MFC?

O evento foi bom, bem organizado. A diferença é que é em ringue. Não foi num ginásio enorme, como acontece com o UFC no Canadá, mas estava cheio. Foi numa cidade mais para o Norte, em Edmonton e era muito frio, com uma tempestade de neve e fazia 15 graus negativos. Mesmo assim foi uma galera boa assistir, não havia lugar vazio. Teve transmissão pela HDNet e foi maneiro.

Sentiu muita diferença em lutar novamente num ringue?

Não atrapalhou em nada e nem senti diferença. Na academia tem ringue para treinar e foi bem tranqüilo. Deu tudo certo, graças a Deus.

How did the fight with Dean Lister go?

It went well. I had already put it in my head that I would be more aggressive and look to fight standing as well. That’s what I did, I worked on kicking his thing and landed several of them. Lister is a really dangerous guy and I knew he would try and take me down and go for the kneebar or heelhook; he has a really refined ground game. He tried to take me down and I used my elbows and threw left-handed punches well. I had to defend his takedowns, but, truth is, I was never in any danger. I did well standing and on the ground.

When do you fight again?

I have one more fight on my contract with the event, which should be in February or early March. I don’t know whether it will be against Bryan Baker, Jason MacDonald or Travis Lutter. Probably against Baker for the belt. I don’t think there is a champion of my division there. I saw other people with belts in the other divisions, so Baker and I would be contenders for this title, which is vacant. That’s what they said at the press conference. Nevertheless, the bout could be against any of the three I mentioned (on the organization’s website the possibility of facing MacDonald is mentioned).

Canada has a lot of MMA fans. What was the MFC like?

The event was good, well organized. The difference is in that it uses a ring. It wasn’t an enormous gymnasium, like when the UFC goes to Canada, but it was packed. It was in a city further north, in Edmonton and it was cold, there was a snow storm and it hit 15 below zero. Even so a good crowd went to watch, there were no empty places. It was broadcast on HDNet and was great.

Did you feel much difference in fighting in a ring again?

It didn’t hinder me at all and I felt no difference. In the gym we train in a ring and it was chill. Everything went smoothly, thank God.

But this Friday the 4^th, in Canada, the Brazilian returned to his winning ways. In the first of his two-fight contract with Maximum Fighting Championship, the country’s biggest event, Thales faced the rugged Dean Lister, another former UFC fighter who, like Thales, is a ground specialist – and ADCC champion in 2003 and 2005.

After the three-round dispute, Thales overcame the American by unanimous judges’ decision. It was the Brazilian’s 15^th win in his 18-fight career.
