Mestre do Combate, a fledgling MMA promotion headed by Rickson Gracie, was held for the first time, last night at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s Vivo Rio arena. And the biggest star of the event was Jiu-Jitsu—with the outcome of six of the eight fights determined on the ground.

In the main event of the evening, Vitor Miranda, a Thai boxing specialist from Team Nogueira, took on Elton Monstro. Vitor’s experience shone through, as he landed solid kicks and punches while pushing the pace the entire truncated duration of the fight.

Ultimately, he ended up teaching a lesson in Jiu-Jitsu: at minute 1:05 Vitor catches hold of Elton and trips him down. At minute 2:21 Vitor transitions from knee-on-belly to mount and wraps up with an arm-and-neck choke.

Evento de MMA idealizado por Rickson Gracie, o Mestre do Combate estreou ontem no Vivo Rio, no Rio de Janeiro, com combates dignos. E o Jiu-Jitsu foi o astro principal do evento – de oitos lutas, seis foram decididas no chão.

No combate principal da noite, Vitor Miranda (Team Nogueira) encarou Elton Monstro. Vitor mostrou sua experiência com bons chutes e socos, e buscou a todo o momento impor o ritmo da luta.

No fim, deu uma aula de Jiu-Jitsu: aos 1min5s do vídeo, Vitor grampeia Elton e dá uma rasteira. Aos 2min21 Vitor faz a transição do joelho na barriga para a montada e finaliza no katagatame.

There were no big stars on the card, which allowed top billing Jiu-Jitsu to take center stage.

So Mestre do Combate, a new event held last night in Rio de Janeiro, pleased the crowd of VIPs and black belts sitting around the circle-shaped cage.

Before the eyes of host Rickson Gracie, and Marcelo Novaes, Cauã Reymond and other famous aces, the fighters on Murilo Bustamante-led Rio team put on a show and overcame the Francisco Veras-led team from São Paulo in an improbable 3-2 come-from-behind win.

Team São Paulo had been winning by 2-0, and the experienced black belt Alexandre Sagat could have shut out the competition by beating Gersinho Conceição. Sagat got the better of the first, ten-minute, round, but the BTT athlete would not be intimidated by the hard knocks he took standing, and went on to get two takedowns to win via decision, with referee Big John McCarthy and master of ceremonies Rickson Gracie having decided in his favor. The gang on Facebook had picked Sagat by a healthy margin, however.

With the score at 2-1, the hometown fighters’ spirits picked up: Armando Sapinho and Fernando Camolês rallied back with submissions. Sapinho, after sinking his Submission of the Night-winning north-south choke, shouted through the mic: “That’s grassroots Jiu-Jitsu. It will never die.” A round of applause for them, and for Jiu-Jitsu.

Foi um card sem estrelas, o que permitiu ao astro principal do espetáculo, o Jiu-Jitsu, brilhar sozinho.

E o Mestre do Combate, realizado no Rio de Janeiro, não desapontou os convidados vips e faixas-pretas presentes à beira da bonita jaula circular.

Diante do anfitrião Rickson Gracie, e de Marcelo Novaes, Cauã Reymond e outras feras, os lutadores do Rio, comandados por Murilo Bustamante, fizeram bonito e venceram o time de São Paulo, treinado por Francisco Veras, por 3 a 2, após uma virada improvável.

O time de São Paulo vinha vencendo por 2 a 0, e cabia a Alexandre Sagat, faixa-preta experiente, matar a disputa contra Gersinho Conceição. Sagat foi melhor no primeiro assalto, de dez minutos, mas o atleta da BTT não se intimidou com os golpes que levou em pé, derrubou mais vezes e venceu na decisão, com os votos de Big John McCarthy e Rickson. A galera, via Facebook, havia dado para Sagat com folga.

Com 2 a 1 contra, os cariocas se animaram: Armando Sapinho e Fernando Camolês finalizaram e viraram a disputa. Sapinho, dono da finalização mais bonita da noite, um estrangulamento norte-sul, mandou a letra no microfone: “Isso é o Jiu-Jitsu raiz, não vai morrer nunca”. Palmas para eles, e para o Jiu-Jitsu.

Hoje, dia 21 de novembro, Rickson Gracie completa mais um aniversário. Sua carteira de identidade diz 54 anos, mas não parece.

Tudo graças ao Jiu-Jitsu e os exercícios de respiração que o craque da arte suave pratica desde os 20 anos.

Nesses tempos de bullying e outras covardias, o GRACIEMAG.com destaca uma das principais lições que aprendeu o faixa-coral:

“Com o Jiu-Jitsu, aprendi a me tornar uma pessoa melhor e a encarar, olho no olho, qualquer adversário na vida. E muitas vezes isso bastava”.

Quer coisa melhor que isso, evitar uma briga, um confronto ou agressão somente com um olhar? É o que acontece muito com quem pratica Jiu-Jitsu, como o nosso leitor cansou de ver na vida.

Hoje também é aniversário de outro “jovem” que aprendeu com Helio Gracie o valor de não ter medo de ninguém.

Trata-se do faixa-vermelha Pedro Valente, 74 anos, médico, cirurgião e vascaíno, pai dos professores Joaquim, Pedro e Guilherme, e da atleta Joana Valente.

“Eu não lembro um dia da minha vida que eu não tenha usado o Jiu-Jitsu que aprendi com Helio Gracie. Não apenas as técnicas, nos treinos, mas principalmente na mente, na filosofia de vida. Olha, até para amarrar o sapato no meio da rua o sujeito usa o que aprendeu com o Jiu-Jitsu”, ensinou-nos Pedro Valente, certa vez.

Fica nossa homenagem a ambos, nesta data especial para o Jiu-Jitsu.

Today, November 21, Rickson Gracie turns a year older. His ID says he’s 54; but he doesn’t look it.

All thanks to Jiu-Jitsu and the breathing exercises the gentle-art ace has been practicing since he was 20 years old.

In these days of bullying and meanness, GRACIEMAG.com felt it appropriate to highlight the main lessons it has learned from the red-and-black belt.

“Through Jiu-Jitsu I learned to be a better person and look any adversary life throws my way right in the eye. And often that’s all it takes.”

Could you want anything better than that, avoiding a fight or altercation with no more than a look? Well, that tends to be the way it goes with Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, as our readers have seen time and again in life.

Today is also the birthday of another “young fellow” who learned the value of fearing no one from Helio Gracie.

His name is Pedro Valente, a 74-year-old red-belt and surgeon who is father to Jiu-Jitsu professors Joaquim, Pedro and Guilherme, as well as the athlete Joana Valente.

“I can’t remember a day in my life when I haven’t used the Jiu-Jitsu I learned from Helio Gracie. I’m not talking about just the techniques in training, but mainly the mind, the life philosophy. You know, you even use what you’ve learned in Jiu-Jitsu when you’re tying your shoes in the middle of the street,” Pedro Valente taught us one time.

So there you have our tribute to the two of them, on this special date for Jiu-Jitsu.

Red-and-black belt Rickson Gracie was at Equipe 1, a gym in Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana neighborhood, this Monday for the launch of his MMA event, Mestre do Combate, of which the inaugural event is set for November 22 and for which tickets are already on sale.

Rickson, wearing a gi and quite at ease on the blue mat at Ricardo de la Riva’s gym, chatted with the Carlson Gracie black belt, posed for dozens of photos and handed out autographs. “It’s nice to soak up this positive energy here,” he said, to de la Riva, with a smile.

Given the mass of attention concentrated on the master, the GRACIEMAG.com reporter used the Jiu-Jitsu mantra of “maximum efficiency with minimum effort” to good effect: he skirted the hordes of people and waited for Rickson at the exit.

Showered up and sporting a white T-shirt, he paused on the sidewalk at Nossa Senhora de Copacabana Ave. to discuss the event, before, smooth as a cat, he leapt into a taxi and departed.

“I’m truly excited about what the new event brings to the table. Our aim is to create a new paradigm and recover the martial arts values that were lost over time, during MMA’s long journey in becoming what it is today. In today’s MMA, anything’s an excuse to stand the fight back up; the ground action hardly begins and the referee already steps in and the fighters start kicking and punching again. Our rules were created to appreciate ground fighting; no one will get saved by the bell, for example. If a submission hold is in place, the victim will have to escape it first before the bell can ring.”

Does Jiu-Jitsu benefit from the event?

“Yes, the art benefits too. This rule has nothing to do with Jiu-Jitsu; it’s a rule for MMA. But the ground game does regain appreciation, and with that, the effectiveness of the technique is more likely to be tested and refined. It’s what we’ve seen ever since the early days of the sport: real fights tend to end up on the ground. We just don’t want to see athletes getting interrupted the whole time when they’re pursuing positions of advantage from which to win. I’m motivated and confident it’ll be a great show. I hope the fighters go for the idea and give their all to try and win.”

Rickson, de kimono e bem à vontade no tatame azul da academia de Ricardo De La Riva, papeou com o faixa-preta de Carlson Gracie, posou para dezenas de fotos e deu autógrafos. “É bom pegar um pouco dessa energia boa daqui”, disse sorrindo, para De La Riva.

Diante do assédio forte ao mestre, o repórter do GRACIEMAG.com usou a tática do Jiu-Jitsu de máxima eficiência com mínimo esforço: desviou da multidão e esperou Rickson na saída.

Banho tomado, camiseta branca, ele parou na calçada da Av. Nossa Senhora de Copacabana e falou sobre o evento, antes de escapulir como um gato e escorregar suavemente para dentro de um táxi.

O evento Mestre do Combate

Estou realmente muito empolgado com esta proposta de um novo evento. Nosso objetivo é criar um novo paradigma e recuperar valores da luta que foram perdidos ao longo do tempo, durante a longa jornada que o MMA teve até os dias de hoje. No MMA atual, tudo é motivo para a luta voltar em pé, os embolas no chão mal começam já são interrompidos pelo árbitro e os lutadores recomeçam os socos e chutes em pé. Nossas regras foram criadas para valorizar a movimentação no chão, não terá ninguém “saved by the bell”, por exemplo. Em caso de chave encaixada, o camarada vai precisar se defender e aí sim o gongo soa.

O Jiu-Jitsu ganha com o evento?

Sim, a arte ganha também. Esta regra não tem nada a ver com Jiu-Jitsu, é uma regra de lutas para MMA. Mas o jogo de solo volta a ser amplamente valorizado, e com isso a tendência é que a eficiência das técnicas seja testada e apurada. É aquilo que vemos desde os primórdios do esporte: a luta real sempre tende a ir para o chão. Só não queremos ver os atletas interrompidos a todo instante, enquanto buscam as posições privilegiadas para vencer. Estou motivado e confiante de que será um show bonito. Espero que os lutadores também comprem a ideia e deem tudo de si em busca da vitória.”

The maiden event set for November 22, Mestre do Combate will feature a novel weigh-in scheme meant to make things easier on fighters’ bodies.

Unlike at other MMA events, at the Rickson Gracie-founded show, weigh-ins will be held on the night of the fight, in an attempt by the promoters to protect the athletes from sharp weight drops in the days leading up to their fights.

“Losing weight so abruptly causes a number of problems, from dehydration to high blood pressure to cardiovascular complications. What’s more, repeating the process over the course of a career can cause psychological problems, give the fighters depression,” says Gisele Lemos, a nutritionist at the Brazilian Judo Confederation. “Losing weight all of a sudden is very damaging. By weighing in on the same night, the athlete has to be conscious, attentive and store enough energy for the fight,” she says in analysis.

And the day the scale is put to use isn’t the only change. The promoters have banned elbows and shortened the number of rounds to two, although the fight duration remains the same as at most events: the first round will last ten minutes, while the second will last five. Another difference is that fighters will not have the luxury of being saved by the bell: if a submission hold is in place when the bell sounds, they will have to defend or tap out first for the fight to end.

“The way we see it, the ten-minute round will force the fighter to draw up a smarter game plan, one that will let them balance energy and technique,” says Rickson Gracie.

Another aspect of Mestre do Combate that sets it apart is that it is a blend of individual and collective sports. When the world famous “Big” John McCarthy bellows the traditional “Let’s get it on!” the individual aspect of the sport remains intact and the fighter will have to give his all on his own. Overall, though, the competition will be comprised of teams, and each team member will enter the ring to fight for his teammates. An event founded by a master who always valued family and collective spirit could be no different.

In the event of a fight ending without a submission or knockout, the decision-making system is a curious one: the referee “Big” John McCarthy has one vote, Master Rickson has another, and the audience watching at the venue or over television has a tie-breaking vote.

The Master of Combate calendar counts nine events, the first of which already has a time and place: November 22 at the Vivo Rio concert hall in Rio de Janeiro. Each event will feature a team contest, the winner of which will have been successful in three out of five of the fights its representatives are in. The winning team goes through to the next event, and the fight purses go up with each time a fighter overcomes his opponents.

According to the promoters, in all BRL 700,000 in purses and prizes will be paid out over the 2012/2013 season. The athletes will also be fighting for the “Fighter of the Night” award.

Com sua primeira edição marcada para 22 de novembro, o evento Mestre do Combate traz como principal novidade um método de pesagem que pretende ser menos agressivo para os lutadores.

No show idealizado por Rickson Gracie, diferentemente da maioria dos eventos, a pesagem vai ocorrer na noite da luta, medida que segundo os organizadores afasta os malefícios das alternâncias de peso às vésperas das disputas.

“Perder peso de maneira rápida traz problemas de desidratação, pressão alta e distúrbios cardiovasculares. Além do que, a repetição desta prática ao longo dos anos acarreta problemas psicológicos que deixam o lutador deprimido”, diz Gisele Lemos, nutricionista da Confederação Brasileira de Judô.  “A perda brusca de peso é muito prejudicial. Com a pesagem na mesma noite da luta, o atleta precisa ser consciente, atencioso e acaba armazenando mais energia para a hora do combate”, analisa.

E a balança não será a única mudança. O evento baniu a cotovelada, e também conta com dois rounds, o primeiro de dez minutos e o segundo de cinco. Outro detalhe é que um lutador prestes a ser finalizado não poderá ser salvo pelo gongo. Terá de se defender primeiro, para aí a luta acabar.

“Na nossa concepção, o round de dez minutos obriga o lutador a desenhar uma estratégia mais inteligente antes da luta, para que ele seja capaz de equilibrar a energia c0m sua melhor técnica”, observa Rickson Gracie.

Outra particularidade do Mestre do Combate é a mescla entre o individual e coletivo. Na hora que o famoso juiz “Big” John McCarthy falar o tradicional “Let´s get it on!” para anunciar o início do embate, o individual prevalece com cada lutador a dar o máximo de si. Como um todo, porém, a competição será realizada entre equipes, e cada integrante vai subir no ringue para lutar por seus companheiros. Um evento criado por um mestre que sempre valorizou a família e o espírito coletivo não poderia ser diferente.

Em caso de não finalização nem nocaute nas lutas, o sistema de decisão é também curioso: o árbitro “Big” John McCarthy tem um voto, mestre Rickson tem outro e o público que acompanha de casa e da arena tem o voto de desempate.

O calendário do Mestre do Combate engloba nove eventos, e o primeiro deles já tem data e local confirmados: dia 22 de novembro, no Vivo Rio, no Rio de Janeiro. Cada evento conta com o confronto entre duas equipes, sendo declarada vencedora aquela que tiver no mínimo três de seus lutadores vitoriosos nos cinco duelos disputados. A equipe vitoriosa se classifica para o evento seguinte e a premiação aumenta conforme os lutadores vão superando seus adversários.

Ao todo serão distribuídos R$ 700 mil entre bolsas e prêmios, segundo a organizaçao, durante a temporada 2012/2013. Os atletas também disputam o prêmio de melhor lutador da noite.

The big standout on the card is three-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion Celso Venícius. Another big announcement is that former UFC referee Big John McCarthy has been hired to take part.

Mestre do Combate features same-day weigh-ins and a team format, with a Murilo Bustamante-led group from Rio de Janeiro to take on one from São Paulo under Francisco Veras, a Jiu-Jitsu professor at Ryan Gracie academy. According to the promoters, the main event of the evening will have Alexandre “Pulga”, undefeated in his 12-fight career, taking on Pety Mafort.

And during the fights no one will be saved by the bell or win on points: to get their arms raised by the referee, the fighters need to either get the knockout, submission or force the opponent to give up. Should there be a draw after the two rounds – the first round lasts ten minutes; the second, five – the result will be determined by three “authorities”: the referee, Rickson Gracie and the audience. And elbows will not be permitted.

Saiu o card do novo evento brasileiro de MMA Mestre do Combate, lançado por mestre Rickson Grace e com sua primeira edição marcada para dia 22 de novembro, no Vivo Rio, no Rio de Janeiro.

O grande destaque é a presença de Celsinho Venícius, tricampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu. Outra boa novidade anunciada foi a contratação do juiz Big John McCarthy, ex-UFC.

O Mestre do Combate terá sua pesagem no dia da luta, e as disputas serão entre a equipes do Rio de Janeiro, comandada por Murilo Bustamante, contra a equipe de São Paulo, comandada por Francisco Veras, professor da academia Ryan Gracie. Segundo os organizadores, a luta principal da noite será entre Alexandre “Pulga” (invicto há 12 lutas) contra Pety Mafort.

Durante o combate, ninguém será salvo pelo gongo ou vai vencer por pontos: para ter o braço levantado pelo juiz, é preciso nocautear, finalizar ou obrigar o outro a desistir. Em caso de empate ao final dos dois rounds – o primeiro com dez minutos de duração, o segundo com cinco, o resultado será decidido por três “autoridades”: o árbitro, Rickson Gracie e a torcida. Também não valem cotoveladas.
