A sticky moment for a Jiu-Jitsu guard player is when an opponent pummels under the arm and bears down his weight. The position, besides counting as an advantage point in competition, makes things hard on the bottom athlete in trying to attack.

During a recent GRACIEMAG.com visit to coastal São Paulo, Professor Marcelo Nigue, of Memorial Gracie Santos, taught a useful alternative for this situation.

In search of the best positions, GRACIEMAG.com spares no effort and, when need be, sails the sea and sky, although the ground is our area of expertise.

In search of the best positions, GRACIEMAG.com spares no effort and, when need be, sails the sea and sky, although the ground is our area of expertise.

That being the case, this reporter headed for São Paulo last Friday for a benefit seminar promoted by Memorial Gracie Santos. The setback was Paulo Filho, who was a no-show. But there was nothing lacking at the class, as it had backup from Amaury Bitetti, MMA fighter and boxer Fabio Maldonado, and supervising teacher and world champion Marcelo Nigue. The crew from Brazilian fight TV channel Combate’s “Passando a Guarda” (“Passing guard”) was in attendance as well.

At UNIMES gymnasium in Santos, Bitetti and Nigue demonstrated some of the secrets to Jiu-Jitsu, while Maldonado answered questions about striking in MMA. World muay thai champion Cosmo Alexandre was also there, before taking off for the USA, where he should make his MMA debut.

The cost of attending was 2 kg of non-perishable food, to be donated to an institution in Santos. São Paulo’s former Secretary of Sport Walter Felman lectured as well, promising to invest in training centers in needy areas.

Check out the video below, as well as some of the report crew’s adventures, a position taught by Amaury Bitetti for GRACIEMAG.com readers, a move to back mount straight from half-guard. Also check out the photos from the seminar.
