Quem pode parar o campeão dos médios do Ultimate, o americano Chris Weidman?

Aos 30 anos, Chris Weidman segue como exterminador de lendas no UFC. O americano, faixa-preta formando por Renzo Gracie e Matt Serra, comanda o peso médio com autoridade desde que venceu Anderson Silva duas vezes.

Depois do Spider, Chris passou por Lyoto Machida e Vitor Belfort, em atuação de arrancar aplausos. O “All-American” segue invicto na carreira com 13 vitórias, sendo três por finalização.

Para o treinador Renzo, o americano ainda vai colecionar mais feitos: “O Chris tem um Jiu-Jitsu perfeito. É um cara diferente. Não vejo ninguém para tirá-lo dali durante muito tempo. Se continuar nesse ritmo, vai ficar como campeão por muito tempo. E ele não está nem ligando se vão respeitá-lo ou não. É um cara que ralou muito”, analisou o Gracie, em entrevista ao canal Combate.

No ranking peso médio do Ultimate, cinco astros aparecem famintos por uma disputa de cinturão e dispostas a acabar com o reinado do americano. São eles:

Middleweight champion Chris Weidman will have a new title to his walk in credits at UFC 187, in two weeks.

Weidman is now a Jiu-Jitsu black belt.

He was promoted to the ranking by Matt Serra and Renzo Gracie after a training session this Wednesday.

“It was a great surprise to receive the black belt from this two. I’m trully blessed to have Matt and Renzo close to me,” said an emotional Weidman.

Weidman, who is 12-0 in his MMA career, is getting ready to face Vitor Belfort, a Carlson Gracie black belt, in a much anticipated title match many times postponed.

Na terra onde Renzo e outras feras da família Gracie escolheram para morar, o Jiu-Jitsu não haveria de se esconder dos holofotes. Foi o que o público presente de 13.306 fãs testemunhou na noite desse sábado, durante o ótimo UFC realizado em Nova Jersey.

Para deleite dos entusiastas da arte suave, as finalizações, as transições no solo e as defesas altamente técnicas comeram solto na lona do Octagon – inclusive na luta principal, para azar do valente Lyoto Machida, finalizado pela segunda vez na carreira (a outra foi contra Jon Jones, em 2011).

Para você, amante de Jiu-Jitsu, não deixar passar nenhum detalhe do que ocorreu no UFC em Nova Jersey, listamos as cinco principais lições extraídas das ações de sábado no evento de Dana White. Que ainda por cima teve como um dos árbitros centrais o campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, que viu tudo de pertinho.

1. Abrace a perna mas não sangre!

A defesa de katagatame de Jimy Hettes durante arrocho sinistro de Diego Brandão (Hettes segurou a própria perna e virou de lado) já valeu o ingresso, mas o confere entre os pesos-penas não parou por aí. Os dois lutadores alternaram quedas, reposições de guarda, defesas variadas do pescoço e boas pancadas. Até que uma orelha machucada nos fez lembrar a frase manjada nas academias de Jiu-Jitsu: “Se quer nadar com os tubarões, trate de não sangrar”. Um modo cascudo de incentivar os novatos a segurar firme e não abandonar os treinos, se seu desejo é ser daqui a alguns anos um dos “tubarões” da academia. Hettes não teve culpa, mas não adiantou ajoelhar e implorar para o médico: ao deixar sangrar, foi decretada a vitória por interrupção para o brasileiro.

2. Quem disse que o jogo de guarda é defensivo?

Peso-galo invicto com 11 lutas, o “mestre do funk” Aljamain Sterling buscava contra o japonês Mizugaki sua batida perfeita, e conseguiu, no terceiro round. Sterling, faixa-roxa de Matt Serra, usou sua guarda fechada, fugiu o quadril e encaixou um lindo e inapelável triângulo de mão. Técnica das mais simples, mas até japonês bate nesse golpe, acredite. 3. Musa de 21 aninhos comprova: levar ao chão também dá dinheiro

Antes do UFC em Nova Jersey, o lutador Diego Brandão soltou uma frase curiosa: “Levar luta para o chão no UFC hoje não dá dinheiro”. (Relembre aqui.) É possível que realmente a arte suave venha sendo cada vez mais desvalorizada pelo público e pelos cartolas, como disse Brandão, mas não foi o que se viu no evento de sábado. A bela Paige VanZant, 21 aninhos, não fugiu do jogo de solo da louríssima Felice Herrig e, durante três assaltos, as duas fizeram uma das mais eletrizantes e comentadas lutas do UFC em Newark. Levar para o chão foi para lá de recompensador para Paige. O importante ao ir ao chão é saber o que fazer por lá, como nos ensinou a bela atleta peso-palha.

4. Jacaré, a transição e o improviso

Muitos treinadores costumam repetir: não improvisem, não tentem golpes que você não treinou, mantenham o plano de jogo traçado antes da luta. Pois o UFC foi obrigado a improvisar. Ao saber no dia 10 de abril que Yoel Romero contundira o menisco, o evento escalou o valente Chris Camozzi, vítima antiga de Ronaldo Jacaré. O remendo ficou evidente quando Jaca atropelou Camozzi novamente. Foi ruim? Não para os fãs do bicampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu. Jacaré quedou com facilidade, passou a guarda com os pés apoiando na grade e exibiu uma transição maravilhosa para o braço no momento em que Chris tentava virar de quatro. Luta improvisada ou não, sempre vale a pena ver Jaca em ação, certo?

5. Rockhold x Machida: canse o oponente antes de finalizar

Já com quatro finalizações no card, sem falar do duelo inenarrável no solo entre os craques Beneil Dariush e Jim Miller (por favor, organizadores, Jim no ADCC SP já!), o fã de Jiu-Jitsu não podia querer mais nada. No entanto, chegou a luta final da noite e Luke Rockhold estava impossível: após castigar Lyoto Machida no ground and pound no primeiro assalto, o americano montou novamente no brasileiro no segundo round, até enfiar os ganchos e finalizar pelas costas. Como se fosse simples.

A lição que ficou foi aquela que Kron Gracie nos ensinou em 2014, no artigo de capa da edição #204: finaliza mais facilmente aquele que deixa o rival exausto primeiro. Ou, nas palavras do filho de Rickson:  “No começo, o adversário pode resistir e endurecer, mas quando começar a cansar, ou ele vai ficar um passo atrás na luta, ou não vai saber para onde ir, ou vai desistir”.

Por fim, claro que ninguém queria ver Machida batucar. Mas, se era para acontecer, que bom que tenha sido pelas mãos de um faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu que sempre gostou de treinar (e competir) de kimono, como Rockhold.

On Sunday June 22, Live To Fight, that is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help those in the martial arts community who are facing life-threatening illnesses is hosting a charity seminar at Serra BJJ in Huntington for a father diagnosed with brain cancer.

Last month, Live To Fight hosted a seminar to help a 2-year-old boy battling Cancer with Matt Serra, Karel Pravec, Mark Staniszewski and Joe Scarola and raised $5.000 dollars.

In an exclusive interview for GRACIEMAG, The founder of Live To Fight, Kristen Brown talks about her personal fight with Cancer and what motivated her to create the organization. She also comments the event this weekend for Brian Baney, and what are her plans for the future with this charity.

GRACIEMAG: Kris, what motivated you to start this charity project?

KRISTEN BROWN: I was first diagnosed with cancer, Hodgkin’s disease when I was only a teenager. I went through chemotherapy; radiation, surgeries and I best my disease. I remained cancer free but was in and out of hospitals for the next twenty years of my life due to of my long-term side effects. I always loved volunteering and helping people and I’ve also been a diehard fan of MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for several years. I attended a BJJ seminar in 2011 for the son of UFC fighter Dan Miller who was suffering from a kidney disease. I walked out of that seminar thinking our community; the martial arts community needs an organization in times of crisis.

Two years later, I underwent a double mastectomy for breast cancer. At the same time my best friend, Reggie “Wreckker” Cardiel, a professional fighter was undergoing treatment for stage 4 Neuroendocrine cancer. One month after my surgery my BJJ teacher, Mark Staniszewski’s 15 month old baby boy got diagnosed with a rare pediatric cancer. I remember lying in bed, in so much pain, and just crying. But I wasn’t crying for me, I was crying for my friends who I loved who were sick; I felt helpless. Being sick and being the patient had become such a normalcy for me, but when the people I loved got sick it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I started Live To Fight to bring together and empower the fight communities to help our own win the toughest fights of their lives. Live to Fight seeks raise awareness and money to support individuals in the martial arts, MMA, combat sports community – our community suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

In your opinion, how the BJJ community is embracing the cause?

The BJJ community has been amazing! I love BJJ! I started training a few years ago. Because of my health it’s been hard to train consistently. I think it’s the most beautiful sport in the world, and the people that I have encountered in the community have been so supportive. To me it’s like an extended family.

We have had a few BJJ seminars and the turnout was great! My first event was a No Gi BJJ seminar at Renzo Gracie’s in NYC with Chris Weidman, Jim Miller, Renato Laranja, and John Danaher. Charlie Liu of Digitsu filmed it and LTF gets the proceeds of sales. Last month we had another seminar with Matt Serra, Karel Pravec, Mark Staniszewski and Joe Scarola. We raised $5,000 for a 2-year-old boy with cancer. I’m so excited to have Renzo teaching our event this weekend! The community as a whole has really embraced my charity. I’m especially grateful for Matt Serra, Ottavia Bourdain, Renato Laranja, Mark Staniszewski, Joe Monihan, Alex Aristides, Bobby Razak, Karel Pravec, Charlie Liu, Renzo Gracie and our newest Live To Fight supporter Rose Gracie.

Kris, you are promoting an upcoming charity event to support a dad with brain cancer. How many people you are expecting to support? If someone is not able to attend, how can they still donate?

On Sunday June 22, at Serra BJJ Academy in Huntington, LI we are having an event for Brian Baney. Brian is the father of a local fighter who is undergoing treatment for brain cancer. There is an MMA seminar in the morning 10-12 with Ray Longo and then 1-4 there’s a BJJ seminar with Renzo Gracie. I’m hoping for over a hundred participants and we already have a lot of people preregistering. After the seminars we have set up a dunk tank so people can come and dunk their favorite fighter. It should be a great day. It’s a chance to train with some of the best in the world while helping someone in our community. What is next? Tell us your plans for the future with LiveToFight?

There are so many things that I want to do! In the long run I want to make Live To Fight a household name amongst MMA and BJJ fans and practitioners. I want to the organization to be big enough so we never have to turn anyone who needs help away. In the immediate future we are going to be working very closely with Rose Gracie. I’m very excited about joining forces with Rose! We have also been picked as the beneficiary charity of Fit To Fight; a national 12-week fitness challenge started by celebrity Top Chef Mike Isabella. We will be doing more events with Live To Fight supporters Matt Serra, Jim Miller, and Daron Cruikshank. We are always looking for new people to do seminars with and to work with. The fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen coming up at the July 7 UFC show has already begun, at least where the psychological war is concerned. After keeping tight-lipped in the face of the American wrestler’s taunting for years, Anderson struck back at the pre-UFC press conference held over the telephone today.

“Chael Sonnen is a criminal, the scourge of the sport,” the “Spider” spat to the world press over the phone, adding that he plans to smash his foe’s teeth in.

And when it comes to technique, the war is ongoing, too. As you can see in the following video, the big-talking challenger isn’t limiting himself to diatribes; he’s training hard for his impending battle at UFC 148. Chael was paid a visit by former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra, a Renzo Gracie black belt based in New York.

Drop in at Team Quest in Oregon and even get treated to a spar between Sonnen and Yushin Okami, take a look at Chael’s home to see the garage he turbo charged for training, and get a glimpse of the most precious piece in his office—the WEC belt Paulo Filho sent him for not making weight in their rematch.

A luta entre o campeão Anderson Silva e Chael Sonnen, no UFC do dia 7 de julho, já começou, ao menos na parte psicológica. Após ouvir calado anos de provocação do wrestler americano, Anderson contra-atacou, na coletiva do UFC realizada por telefone hoje.

“Chael Sonnen é um criminoso, a escória do esporte”, disparou o Aranha, por telefone para a imprensa mundial.

UFC 119 this Saturday in Indianapolis wasn’t the most exciting ever fare offered up by the promotion. The fights on the main card left something to be desired, mainly the main event between Frank Mir and Mirko Cro Cop. Proof of that was in the constant booing from the crowd hoping for something more to stir their appetites.

The headliner between Frank Mir and Mirko Cro Cop was one of the most monotonous, but did pan out with an unexpected outcome. After much clinch work in the first two rounds, during which he took a slight advantage, Mir used his opponent’s weapon to prevail. In the third, all signs pointed to the fight lasting till the final bell, but the Jiu-Jitsu black belt threw a spot-on knee. Cro Cop, best known for his precision striking game, crumpled to the ground with fifty-eight seconds remaining.

Using his wrestling prowess, Ryan Bader took Rogério Minotouro down in the first, working the ground-and-pound to take an advantageous lead on the score cards. In the second, Minotouro found his distance and landed solid strikes in the standup department, but Bader managed the takedown again. In the final round, Mintouro went all out trying to land strikes and knees. At the end of the final round, Bader landed yet another takedown to consolidate his dominance, winning by unanimous decision. Bader notches his twelfth MMA win in a row, while Rogério tastes defeat in the UFC for the first time.

Chris Lytle used his striking well to subdue Matt Serra, conquering his fourth win in a row. In the second round, the crowd went wild during a frenetic exchange of punches, when Serra looked like he wouldn’t be able to hold out. But the veteran forged ahead till the final bell, but lost the fight by unanimous decision.

In the early broadcast, Sean Sherk had his work cut out for him against Evan Dunham, and after three rounds, won by split decision. Now the seasoned Melvin Guillard notched his third win in a row, against Jeremy Stephens – another split decision. In the preliminary fights, kudos to Thiago Tavares for his win over Audinwood. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt landed a guillotine choke while still in the first round.
