Há exatos 15 anos, no dia 31 de janeiro de 2004, BJ Penn fez história no UFC, como já era de costume para o lutador havaiano. Primeiro americano a vencer o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu na faixa-preta e feroz atleta peso leve na época, com duas disputas de cinturão já realizadas (uma derrota e um empate), BJ  subiu de categoria para desafiar ninguém menos que Matt Hughes, campeão dos meio-médios, no UFC 46.

Considerado um dos melhores atletas do Ultimate na época, Matt se sentiu insultado pelo desafio de BJ. “Não conseguiu o título nem na sua categoria e quer me desafiar pelo cinturão?”, indagava Hughes. Contudo, um determinado BJ, com o Jiu-Jitsu sempre ao seu lado, mostraria ao mundo o que era capaz.

Depois de trabalhar Matt Hughess no solo, BJ conseguiu passar a guarda e montar, e foi assim que Matt virou de costas, posição na qual BJ aplicou o mata-leão que valeu seu primeiro título no Ultimate, ainda no primeiro round.

A two-time welterweight champion and member of the UFC Hall of Fame, several months ago Matt Hughes was involved in an accident where his truck was struck by a train near his home in Illinois.

Thankfully, this Sunday Hughes was ready to show the world that he had made long strides in his recovery. At the UFN event held in St. Louis, he took a symbolic walk up to the Octagon, his firm steps showing the heart and determination that made him a legend of the sport.

Duas vezes campeão dos meio-médios e integrante do Hall da Fama do UFC, Matt Hughes passou há alguns meses pela sua maior batalha fora do cage. O americano sofreu um grave acidente, no qual o seu carro foi atingido por um trem. Após meses de recuperação, o atleta voltou à sua casa.

Em homenagem realizada pelo Ultimate no Fight Night desse domingo, dia 14, Hughes voltou a caminhar pelo corredor que leva ao octógono, palco que lhe rendeu grandes vitórias e lições no esporte. Com passos firmes, o ex-campeão mostrou a determinação e o coração que sempre o levaram além nos combates do UFC.

O ADCC confirmou sua principal superluta para o evento que rola no ano que vem, em Helsinque, na Finlândia.

Além das disputas pelo ouro nas categorias de peso masculino e feminino, teremos o duelo entre Renzo Gracie e Matt Hughes encabeçando o evento, agendado para setembro de 2017.

As feras estariam frente a frente na edição do ADCC 2015, que rolou em São Paulo. Contudo, uma lesão no joelho do Gracie adiou o combate. Os dois já se encararam no MMA, com vitória para o americano, no UFC.

Ainda no ADCC 2017, é aguardado o duelo entre André Galvão e Cláudio Calasans. Seguindo a tradição do evento, Galvão, atual campeão da superluta, tem que encarar o atual campeão absoluto do evento, no caso, Calasans. No duelo do ADCC 2015, Galvão bateu Roberto Cyborg, vencedor do absoluto do ADCC 2013, da China.

ADCC 2017 is slated for September 22 through 24 in Helsinki, Finland. Following the tradition of the previous installments, this year the organization will hold a match between legends of the past. This time it’s Renzo Gracie vs. Matt Hughes. The bout was supposed to take place at ADCC 2015, in São Paulo, but Renzo was forced to pull out due to a knee injury. Gracie and Hughes fought once in MMA. In 2010, at UFC 112, Hughes achieved a TKO in round 3.

As seletivas brasileiras para o ADCC 2015, o mais clássico torneio de luta agarrada do mundo, estão com inscrições abertas.

Os campeonatos classificatórios para atletas brasileiros serão em abril. A seletiva do Rio de Janeiro será no Iate Clube Jardim Guanabara, na Ilha do Governador, nos dias 11 e 12 de abril. A triagem em São Paulo será no fim de semana seguinte, em 18 e 19 de abril, em Barueri.

As inscrições, para atletas de todas as faixas e modalidades, tanto no Rio como São Paulo, podem ser feitas no site www.adccbrasil.com.br. O valor da inscrição é 120 reais.

Segundo a entidade, os campeões do Rio e de Sampa serão premiados não apenas com a vaga para o ADCC 2015, mas também com a passagem aérea para o grande evento, hospedagem, translados e alimentação.

As categorias de peso em disputa são as seguintes:

Masculino (acima de 18 anos): Até 66kg, até 77kg, até 88kg, até 99kg e acima de 99kg

Feminino (acima de 18 anos): Até 60kg e acima de 60kg

O torneio mundial do ADCC foi anteriormente anunciado para os dias 7, 8 e 9 de agosto de 2-15, em Manaus, mas a organização ainda aguarda detalhes para confirmar a data e o local exatos.

Entre as superlutas já acertadas para o evento, estão os duelos entre André Galvão e Roberto Cyborg pelo título de supercampeão, e duas lutas com veteranos lendários: Renzo Gracie x Matt Hughes e Zé Mario Sperry x Ricardo Libório.

Age means nothing to Renzo Gracie. “If you have 20 years old but stops training Jiu-Jitsu, it doesn’t work for you. However, if you train consistently you can go over 40 and still be in the best shape of your life, “says the Rio de Janeiro teacher living in New York.

At 47, the black belt has two up coming fights scheduled, one against Kazushi Sakuraba, 46, on Metamoris 5 and another vs. Matt Hughes, 40, in the 2015 ADCC. Nevertheless, he wants more: between Saku and Hughes, Renzo still wants to go at it twice in the UFC to prove his theory that he is at his technical peak.

While granting the interview to GRACIEMAG, and parked inside his car, Renzo saw a flustered American driver hit the back of his car. The Gracie was not irritated, nor went out to verify the damage; instead he let the guy pass by, apologize and leave. GRACIEMAG: Many fans see your No-Gi match at Metamoris 5, on November 22, as the perfect outcome of rivalry between Sakuraba and the Gracies. However, few people remember that the Japanese lost in 2010 to Ralek Gracie, who is the event organizer. For you, what is at stake?

Renzo Gracie: Yes, thanks to Ralek the family is ahead now. What I will achieve with this fight is a chance to get my hands on him again. As a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, I will be able to check if I have improved from that time forward, and see if he also has improved since then. Meeting again with a guy with whom you have fought and lost is a golden chance for you to assess this development. Thus, I could not say no when Ralek called offering me the fight. I signed the contract without even reading it.

Was it already the initial idea of the Metamoris organization to have you against Sakuraba?

Once Ralek began negotiating with Sakuraba, he called me. I embraced the idea and did not drop it anymore; I started training in the same day since I was busy as hell and was not training hard. So it was like that; Sakuraba has signed knowing he was fighting me. It will be a pleasure; I cannot wait.

What was the biggest lesson learned from that defeat at Pride 10 in 2000? Did you study the Kimura escape from every angle?

Yes, after that day I do not get caught anymore; I escape easily today. At the time I was already cautious; what I tried to do was to apply a takedown and fall on top of him. However, Saku hit the string and set up the submission, and in the process my arm was broken. People still asks if that broken arm causes me grief, anger or regret until now. Look, the reality is: that poor outcome has brought me great pride, and no grief. After all, I lost to another Jiu-Jitsu fighter: with that victory Sakuraba had proof that our family took Jiu-Jitsu back to Japan. Like grateful children that we are, we took the gentle art back to its crib so it doesn’t get lost.

You usually teach that a great fighter needs someone he respects coaching his workouts, waking up the guy early, requiring a little more of each session. Who will push you? And who will be your sparring partners in NY?

Who usually plays this role is Ricardo Almeida, always pushing me and requiring more work done. But I’ve also started push myself: I woke up early today and ran 46 minutes in the morning. My body is starting to react. I’m excited because I have tough people surrounding me; the team is sharp. From the family, Neiman is one of them, which is in excellent shape and already shines in MMA. Then, there is Gregor, Igor, and Rolles who has a MMA fight scheduled in Poland. The training will be catching fire until November.

At 47, you’re living in a wonderful phase where you can train and exchange knowledge with your son, Ruran of 19. Will he pursue a career?

Not only him, but also there is a new generation coming up that will not be easy. For an example, yesterday I found myself almost an hour with Daniel Ignacio, my 15 years old godson. He is already a wrestling champion here in the USA, and has my size! The tough guy was trying to submit me during the entire training. Now, he wants to wear the kimono and start winning in Jiu-Jitsu as well. Ruran is evolving too; it is a pleasure to see how much he still has to improve throughout his career. I am increasingly a fan of his. He had been sick for a while, but it was just one more struggle in our lives. Everything in life is a fight, and all was well in the end. We are closer after this fight together.

You face Sakuraba in November; and Matt Hughes in September 2015, at the ADCC in Manaus. Who do you want to face in the meantime to keep you in shape? You did not give up the UFC yet.

I should have one or two bouts around that time. I want to go at it again. And, against any opponent; after all I was born with this defect. Choose an opponent has never been my style. I just hope it’s a tough guy, the best we have, and a champion. But it is up to the promoters to pick who will face me. I’ll be ready to fight and even for free. Dana White said he would give me a blank check to stay home and don’t fight. But I said I would go there for free, we’re in this tug of war.

Are you preparing something special to surprise Sakuraba?

We train everything here, especially chokes and armbars. The guillotine and kimura are up to date. Yet, the reality is that I want to impose my game and see if he can follow.

Is there something missing in your career, Renzo? Fighting someone?

I have yet a lot to do for the love of Jiu-Jitsu. I want to try to take the sport to the TV here in the USA, for example; that is a next step. In the ring, I just have to celebrate. Being born in 1967 I had the glory of being able to exchange sweat and knowledge with four generations of my family. I am thankful for having shared so many amazing moments with the new and old generations of fighters. Not missed anyone. When did Conde Koma die? Was in 1941? Just missed him then, for a few years I did not take a plane to Para and went there to train with this Japanese.

O manda-chuva do ADCC, Guy Nievens, anunciou em seu perfil no Facebook mais uma superluta para a edição 2015 do evento, agendado para o Brasil. O público de Manaus terá a oportunidade de assistir uma batalha entre duas lendas do esporte, Renzo Gracie e Matt Hughes.

Duas vezes campeão e integrante do Hall da Fama do UFC, Hughes, 40 anos, já competiu no tradicional torneio sem kimono. Foi no ano 2000, quando o mesmo ingressou na divisão até 99kg. Ele fez três lutas, venceu Ricardo Cachorrão e Jeremy Horn, mas perdeu para Jeff Monson na semifinal.

Já Renzo, 47 anos, conquistou dois títulos do ADCC na divisão até 77kg, em 98 e 2000. Ele também disputou uma superluta do evento, quando foi superado por Zé Mario Sperry por 5 a 0, em 2011.

O Gracie falou com exclusividade ao GRACIEMAG.com sobre o novo desafio: “O Matt Hughes é um competidor incrível e sempre gostou de se testar no ADCC. Ele teve que se afastar por conta de sua carreira no MMA, mas agora que se aposentou dos cages ele pediu para lutar sem kimono mais uma vez. Ele me ligou e me ofereceu o combate, eu não podia dizer não. Será ótimo comemorar meus 48 anos desta forma. Eu não tenho mais 22 anos, por isso já comecei a treinar para o combate”, disse o faixa-preta

Renzo e Hughes já se enfrentaram, mas foi no UFC, em 2010. Na ocasião, o americano venceu por nocaute técnico no terceiro assalto.

O ADCC 2015 será realizado em Manaus, em setembro de 2015. Além do duelo entre Renzo e Hughes, outra aguardada superluta da edição será entre os lendários Ricardo Libório e Zé Mario Sperry, ex-companheiros de equipe na época da academia Carlson Gracie.

ADCC Boss Guy Nievens announced today on his Facebook account another superfight for the 2015 edition of the event.

The crowd in Manaus, Brazil, will have the opportunity to witness a battle between two legends of the sport, Renzo Gracie and Matt Hughes.

A two-time welterweight UFC champion, Hughes, 40, competed once before in the ADCC.

In 2000, he entered the -99kg division and had three fights, defeating Ricardo Almeida and Jeremy Horn and losing to Jeff Monson in the semifinal.

Renzo, 47, has two ADCC titles in the -77kg division, wining in 1998 and 2000.

He also competed in a superfight in 2011, when he lost 5-0 to José Mario Sperry.

The Gracie talked exclusively with the GRACIEMAG.com about this new challenge: “Hughes is an amazing competitor and he has always liked to compete in the ADCC. He had to step away because of his MMA career but now that he is done with that he called the ADCC and asked if he could fight. They called me and offered the fight and I couldn’t say no. It’s gonna be a great way to celebrate my 48th birthday. As I’m not 22 anymore, I already started training for  the match.”

Renzo and Hughes fought once in the UFC, in 2010, when the American won by TKO in the third round.

The 2015 ADCC will take place in Manaus, Brazil, on September next year and besides Gracie vs. Hughes, it will also feature a superfight between former Carlson Gracie teammates Zé Mario Sperry and Ricardo Libório.

Neste mês de novembro, o UFC completa 20 anos de existência. Entre altos e baixos da organização, muitas reputações e histórias foram construídas dentro da jaula de oito lados lançada por Rorion Gracie.

Nada mais justo, portanto, do que uma festança com um card digno de 20 anos de luta, com astros dentro e fora do octagon. É o que o evento dos irmãos Fertitta e Dana White promete para o próximo dia 16 de novembro, daqui a duas semanas, no UFC 167.

Como toda festa que se preze, existem aqueles que coçam o bolso para estar num lugar privilegiado, e aqueles que graças ao currículo se tornam presenças vip nas primeiras fileiras.

Assim, enquanto o campeão de vendas de pacotes pay-per-view, Georges St-Pierre, estiver procurando defender seu cinturão peso meio-médio contra Johny Hendricks, na tradicional MGM Arena, outros figurões vão estar prestigiando nas primeiras fileiras.

Entre os convidados, o pioneiro Royce Gracie vai estar lá, assim como um de seus oponentes mais marcantes, o pugilista Art Jimmerson. Art encarou Royce nas rodadas de abertura do UFC 1, e entrou no cercado com apenas uma luva, na mão esquerda, para deixar a direita livre para tentar pegadas. Não foi bem-sucedido, como todos lembram.

Hoje, o experiente pugilista é treinador-chefe de boxe da academia do UFC, em Torrance, Califórnia.

Além deles, os ex-campeões Mark Coleman (1997), BJ Penn (2004;2008-2009), Frankie Edgar (2010-2012) e Matt Hughes (2001-2004,2004-2006) também estão na lista vip, assim como muitos atuais detentores de cinturões e diversos astros de Hollywood.

Dentro do octagon, o Brasil estará representado no show comemorativo por Thales Leites, que encara Ed Herman. O árbitro Mario Yamasaki media a luta entre GSP e Hendricks.
