Nos dias 11, 12 e 13 de abril, os olhos da imensa comunidade mundial do Jiu-Jitsu estarão voltados para Abu Dhabi. Na capital dos Emirados Árabes, a nata do esporte vai brigar por um dos títulos de maior prestígio no circuito hoje, e de quebra por um prêmio em dinheiro que chega a 30 mil dólares – grana embolsada pelo dono do ouro absoluto faixa-preta, que no ano passado foi decidido pelo campeão Rodolfo Vieira contra André Galvão.

Além dos astros da categoria adulto, no masculino e feminino, o WPJJC vai lançar este ano uma nova divisão, a dos masters e seniores no masculino, sem premiação em dinheiro.

“São quatro divisões novas no masculino”, explicou ao GRACIEMAG.com o faixa-preta Sid Jacintho, diretor de regras do torneio. “Master (35 a 40 anos), Sênior 1 (41 a 45), Sênior 2 (46 a 50) e Sênior 3 (de 51 anos em diante). Nessas divisões, os faixas-brancas lutam separados; azuis e roxas lutam juntos; e por fim, marrom e preta lutam juntos também”.

Este ano, no adulto masculino, faixas-pretas e marrons vão lutar separados. No feminino, roxas, marrons e pretas se enfrentam.

One of the black belts receiving the most fanfare at the 2012 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Champion wasn’t even in the adult division. The heavyweight Flavio “Cachorrinho” Almeida, a teacher at Gracie Barra San Clemente, went all out in the master division, capturing gold at both weight and open weight in Irvine. Besides the tough opposition, Cachorrinho also had to contend with the expectations of the throngs of fans who wanted to see Ricardo Cachorrão’s brother in action. GRACIEMAG.com had a brief chat with the champ, who is one of the leaders at Carlos Gracie Junior’s network of schools.

What was it like to face your former training partner Fabio Leopoldo in those two finals?

It was awesome. I take facing old training partners quite naturally. I always had a great relationship with Fabio, and despite our differences, I still respect him, especially on the mat. He’s a great fighter. I always trained a lot with Fabio and know his game well. I know his strength is the rightward half-guard. I put together a winning plan with the help of my brother Ricardo.

What did you learn from winning the absolute title?

Man, the greatest challenge is to keep the businesses running while I dedicate myself to training. My journey to the Pan started at the start of the year, doing lots of planning and organizing. The victory wasn’t winning itself, but to have managed to get in that shape and level of technique without letting the GB school association slip, or my own schools for that matter. It wasn’t just my training partners who were essential to my being able to do it, but my business partners, too. The coolest part was that everyone was there. My wife, my daughter, my team at work, my team at training and our students at GB San Clemente and Dana Point. I feel the gang identifies with me and was so happy because they no I have a million obligations to take care of outside of training, and I still managed to compete so well. That’s the reality a lot of GB teachers have to deal with these days.

So what’s the lesson that came of the double win that you can pass on to students and fans?

I really want my students and GB teammates to realize that it really is possible to keep in good physical and technical shape and still do a good job in our project of delivering Jiu-Jitsu to everyone, as set forth in the school motto. I fought for them. To make that example.

What’s it like having Marcio Feitosa in your corner? From you two dealing with each other on a daily basis in the GB Association, I imagine it’s easy. Or isn’t it?

Man, it’s like magic! I don’t consider myself too smart of a fighter (laughs). I use a lot of force when it comes down to it. And Marcio is a brilliant strategist, sees things in Jiu-Jitsu matches before they happen. When he’s in my corner I perform a lot better. Having Ricardo there was really great too. A lot of people feel Ricardo is one of the best Jiu-Jitsu coaches in the world, and having his support was key. He’s the one who put the final touches on my game for me to compete well against Fabio.

Your brother didn’t end up competing. Was that frustrating to you?

It was. But not everything always goes to plan, does it? I really want to compete in the same weight group as him at the No-Gi Worlds, so we can close out. Who knows? Maybe we’ll both be in the adult medium heavyweight group.

As a spectator, how did you feel about there not being an absolute final in adult division at the 2012 Pan?

Hard to pass a judgment. Yes, it’s no good for the crowd. But it’s really hard for close training partners to compete against each other. It creates a difficult atmosphere at the academy. A lot of that also has to do with the maturity of the athletes. Rômulo [Barral] and Roger [Gracie] always compete against each other, and their relationship was never put under strain. I’m in favor of competing; but only when the athletes are able to do so. In the end, they and the crowd lose out when the match doesn’t take place. But I feel it’s part of Jiu-Jitsu culture, and I haven’t heard too much of an outcry.

Um dos faixas-pretas mais festejados durante o Pan de Jiu-Jitsu 2012 não estava na categoria adulto. O peso pesado Flavio “Cachorrinho” Almeida, professor da Gracie Barra San Clemente, sobrou no master, faturando o peso e o absoluto em Irvine. Cachorrinho, além dos duros oponentes, ainda precisou superar a expectativa dos torcedores, que queriam ver também o irmão Ricardo Cachorrão em ação. O GRACIEMAG.com bateu um papo rápido com o professor e um dos líderes da escola de Carlos Gracie Jr.

Como foram essas duas finais com um ex-parceiro de treinos, o Fabio Leopoldo?

Foi muito legal. Encaro com bastante naturalidade esse confronto com antigos parceiros de treino. Sempre tive um ótimo relacionamento com o Fabio e, apesar das nossas divergências, mantenho meu respeito por ele, especialmente dentro do tatame. Ele é um grande lutador. Sempre treinei muito com o Fabio e conheço bem o jogo dele. Sei que o forte dele é a meia-guarda para o lado direito. Montei um plano que deu certo, com a ajuda do meu irmão Ricardo.

O que você aprendeu com esse título absoluto, ainda mais no quintal de casa?

Cara, meu maior desafio é manter as empresas em ordem enquanto me dedico aos treinamentos. Minha jornada para o Pan comecou no início do ano, com muito planejamento e organização. A conquista não foi a vitória em si, mas eu ter conseguido entrar naquela forma física e técnica sem deixar a peteca cair na Associação de escolas GB nem nas minhas próprias escolas. Meus parceiros não só de treino mas de trabalho foram fundamentais para que eu conseguisse isso. O mais maneiro foi que todo mundo estava lá. Minha esposa, minha filha, minha equipe de trabalho, minha equipe de treino e os nossos alunos da GB San Clemente e Dana Point. Acho que a galera se identifica e vibra muito porque sabem que tenho um milhão de obrigações fora dos treinos, e ainda consegui lutar tão bem.  Essa é a realidade de muitos professores da GB hoje.

Que espécie de lição, então, você deixa para os fãs e alunos com o ouro duplo?

Quero muito que meus alunos e companheiros da GB percebam que dá, sim, para manter uma boa forma física e técnica e ainda mandar bem nas nossas obrigações administrativas relacionadas ao projeto de transmitir o Jiu-Jitsu para todos, como é o lema da escola. Lutei também por eles. Para dar esse exemplo.

Como funciona você em ação e o Marcio Feitosa no córner? Pelo entrosamento diário na Associação GB, imagino que seja mais fácil. Ou não?

Cara, isso é magico! Não me considero um lutador muito inteligente (risos). Sou o cara mais da força ali na hora H. E o Marcio é brilhante na estratégia, enxerga coisas na luta de Jiu-Jitsu antes de elas acontecerem. Quando ele está no meu córner, meu desempenho é muito melhor. Ter o Ricardo lá somando foi ainda mais legal! Ricardo é tido por muitos como um dos melhores coaches de Jiu-Jitsu do mundo, e ter o apoio dele foi fundamental. Ele que fez os ajustes finais em meu jogo para eu lutar bem com o Fabio.

Seu irmão acabou não lutando. Você ficou frustrado com isso?

Fiquei sim. Mas nem tudo sai como planejado, né. Quero muito lutar o Mundial Sem Kimono no mesmo peso que ele, para a gente fechar. Quem sabe não entramos no meio-pesado adulto?

Como espectador, o que achou de não ter final do absoluto adulto no Pan 2012?

Difícil de julgar. Sim, é ruim para o público. Mas para parceiros de treino que são muito próximos é realmente complicado lutar. Cria um clima difícil na academia. Muito disso está relacionado com a maturidade dos atletas também. Rominho (Barral) e Roger (Gracie) sempre lutaram e a relação dos dois jamais se abalou. Sou a favor da luta, mas somente os atletas têm condiçã de decidir isso. No final, são eles e o público que saem perdendo quando a luta não acontece. Mas acho que já faz parte da cultura do Jiu-Jitsu e não ouvi muita insatisfação.
