Martin Stepanek, um dos maiores mergulhadores do mundo em todos os tempos, começou a treinar Jiu-Jitsu em North Miami Beach, na aula básica ministrada pelo professor Pedro Valente, da Gracie Miami.

Convidado por dois faixas-azuis dos irmãos Valente, os experientes mergulhadores Brett Scaglione e Jared Schmelzer, Martin ficou bastante impressionado com a simplicidade e eficiência do Jiu-Jitsu. Após a aula, os três craques até debaixo d’água conversaram sobre as semelhanças da arte marcial com o mergulho.

De acordo com eles, ambas atividades se baseiam num nível extremo de paciência e de habilidade em relaxar sob pressão. Muita pressão, por vezes.

Entre os maiores feitos de Martin Stepanek, está a sucessiva quebra de recordes mundiais de apneia estática, obtidos entre 2001 e 2009. Foram 11 recordes quebrados, entre eles ficar embaixo d’água por 8min06s sem respirar, em 2001; e mergulhar a 136m (446 pés) de profundidade, em 2005.

Martin Stepanek, one of the all-time greatest divers in the world, started practicing Jiu-Jitsu in North Miami Beach, at the basic class taught by Professor Pedro Valente of Gracie Miami.

Invited by two of the Valente brothers’ blue belts, experienced divers Brett Scaglione and Jared Schmelzer, Martin was impressed by the simplicity and effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu. After class, the three superstars spoke of the similarities between the martial art and diving even while under water.

According to them, both activities are based on an extreme level of patience and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Too much pressure at times.

Among Martin Stepanek’s greatest accomplishments are the successive world records for static freediving he broke from 2001 to 2009. 11 records were broken, including staying underwater without breathing for 8:06min in 2001, and diving to a depth of 136m (446 feet) in 2005.
