Ex-campeão do Jungle Fight, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Marcelo Guimarães estreou na gaiola mais famosa do mundo do MMA nessa quarta-feira. O capixaba invicto chegou a sua oitava vitória na carreira, ao superar Daniel Stittgen, por decisão dividida, pelo UFC on Fuel 4.

Na luta principal da noite, o faixa-roxa Chris Weidman (Matt Serra) aplicou quedas e imperou no solo, antes de acertar uma cotovelada e completar o atropelo sob Mark Muñoz com uma saraivada de golpes no segundo assalto. Agora, Weidman é um dos próximos na lista de desafiantes ao cinto de Anderson Silva, ao lado do cubano Hector Lombard.

The former champion of Brazil’s Jungle Fight promotion, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Marcelo Guimarães made his debut in MMA’s most renowned cage this Wednesday. The undefeated native of Espirito Santo state notched his eighth career win upon outpointing Daniel Stittgen via split decision at UFC on Fuel 4.

While he didn’t get the tapout this time around in the cage, here on GRACIEMAG.com he demonstrates how to sink an armbar from the guard. Pay attention to how Marcelo places his foot on the hip both to lock down the opponent’s arm and to help in turning his hip.

In the main event of the evening, purple belt Chris Weidman of Matt Serra team went to town with takedowns and ran roughshod over his opponent on the ground before landing a second-round and finishing up the beat-down on Mark Muñoz with a barrage of strikes on the ground. Now, Weidman figures at the top of the list of challengers to middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva’s throne, alongside Hector Lombard.

Marcelo Guimarães is the new champion of the promotion, after dominating Lucas Rotta by using his Jiu-Jitsu to good effect during the first round. In the second, the fighter made it to mount on three occasions, tried for an armbar, swept, got back mount, where he sunk a snug rear-naked choke that put the stubborn Rotta to sleep. On a sidenote, the new middleweight champion of the event is a former drug addict who recuperated through the martial arts.

Another fight showcasing plenty of technique was the heavyweight clash between Kleber Orgulho and Edson Conterrâneo. The lighter of the two, Orgulho used his boxing skills well throughout the three rounds, relying mainly on his uppercut. Conterrâneo tried for takedowns and even managed to get some, but it was too little, as Kleber was awarded the unanimous decision. Next for the fighter from the Brazilian state of Bahia is the Jungle Fight light heavyweight GP.

Gil Freitas tirelessly lit up Marinho Conceição with strikes. In the second round, Marinho dropped to the ground and Gil followed him down and struck away until the ref stepped in. Now local fighter Douglas Bertazini, a Miguel Repanas student, brought the crowd to its feet in his fight against Joni “Little”. The first round was evenly matched, but Douglas dominated the second two rounds, landing on top in several instances and connecting with strikes. His efforts were rewarded with a unanimous decision win.

In the international matchup, Fernando Kioshi tried his best on the ground, sinking a triangle and making it to the mount, but Peru’s Diego Akita proved to be superior, getting the better of the standup action, which earned him the split decision. In the opener, João Paulo met fierce resistance at the outset but soon found his feet, landing a takedown, passing guard, mounting and getting back mount, where he submitted Marcelo Cruz with a rear-naked choke.

Na disputa de cinturão, levou a melhor Marcelo Guimarães. Contra Lucas Rotta, Marcelo dominou desde o primeiro assalto, com a tática de quedar e usar o Jiu-Jitsu. Na segunda parcial, o lutador chegou três vezes à montada, tentou um armlock, raspou, pegou as costas e apertou no mata-leão. Lucas resistiu e acabou dormindo. Com a vitória, Marcelo é o campeão internacional do Jungle na categoria médio. Um detalhe sobre o lutador, é um ex-dependente químico, que se recuperou e retomou a vida através das artes marciais.

Outra luta que trouxe bastante técnica foi entre Kleber Orgulho e Edson Conterrâneo, na categoria de pesos pesados. Mais leve, Orgulho usou bem o boxe nos três rounds, principalmente os uppers. Conterrâneo tentou quedar, e até conseguiu, mas não foi o suficiente. Decisão unânime para Kleber, que encheu de “Orgulho” o seu treinador! Agora o baiano vai participar do GP de meio-pesados do Jungle Fight.

Gil Freitas não se cansou de disparar os potentes socos contra Marinho Conceição. No segundo round, Marinho acabou caindo e Gil partiu com tudo para cima, tendo socado até o árbitro interromper. Já o lutador local Douglas Bertazini, pupilo de Miguel Repanas, levantou a torcida na luta contra “Joni Little. A primeira parcial foi parelha, mas Douglas dominou os dois últimos assaltos, tendo caido por cima em várias situações e trabalhado bem com socos. Merecido o triunfo por decisão unânime.

Na luta internacional, bem que Fernando Kioshi tentou levar a melhor no chão, tendo encaixado um triângulo e chegado à montada. Mas o peruano Diego Akita foi superior, melhor na trocação, quando a luta estava em pé. Valeu a vitória por decisão dividida. No combate inicial, João Paulo levou sufoco nos primeiros instantes, mas depois quedou, passou a guarda, montou e pegou as costas, antes de finalizar Marcelo Cruz com um mata-leão.

The Jungle Fight promotion will next set up shop in the city of Itu, famous around Brazil for the exaggerated size of everything, even the public telephone booths. The event will mark Wallid Ismail’s 31st production, and the promoter expects no less than fistfuls of action.

“It will be historic, this will be the first time Jungle holds middleweight title bout,” says Ismail regarding the matchup between Marcelo Guimarães and Lucas Rotta.

In all, the card will feature six fights. Among those to feature are Gil de Freitas and Edson Conterrâneo.
