A black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and owner of a number of IBJJF titles, Jonatas Novaes saw MMA action this Saturday, June 16, at SF Shofight 20. At the Springfield, Missouri event, the Rodrigo Comprido students was quick on the trigger and took just 51 seconds before landing a high kick um chute alto,

that landed in full, dropping dazed former UFC fighter Drew Fickett to the mat. Following up on the ground, the Brazilian dropped fists to finish what he started.

In other fights on the Shofight card, Lyle Beerbohm took a unanimous decision over Marcus Aurélio, and Kendall Grove overcame Derek Brunson by split decision. In the main event of the evening, John Gunderson tapped out former UFC fighter Karo Parisyan with a first-round guillotine.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu dono de variados títulos da IBJJF, Jonatas Novaes esteve em ação pelo MMA nesse sábado, 16 de junho, no evento SF Shofight 20. Em Springfield, Missouri, o aluno de Rodrigo Comprido foi rápido no gatilho e só precisou de 51 segundos para acertar um chute alto, que fez o ex-lutador do UFC Drew Fickett descer grogue. No chão, o brasileiro desceu o braço para liquidar a fatura.

With a number of IBJJF titles on his CV, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Jonatas Novaes has an MMA fight scheduled for the June 16 SF Shofight 20 event. The fight will be held in Springfield, Missouri, and the Rodrigo Comprido student will take on speedy former UFC fighter Drew Fickett.

“He’s got a lot of experience. I know it’ll be tough, but I have faith in God, I’m leaving there with the win,” said the Brazilian who now counts nine wins on his MMA record. Now his American opponent is 59-fights old, and has won 42 of them.

Dono de vários títulos da IBJJF no currículo, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Jonatas Novaes está com luta de MMA marcada para o próximo dia 16 de junho, no evento SF Shofight 20. Em Springfield, Missouri, o aluno de Rodrigo Comprido vai encarar o rápido ex-lutador do UFC Drew Fickett.

“Ele é um cara com muita experiência, sei que a luta será dura mas estou com fé em Deus, vou sair de lá com mais uma vitória”, disse o brasileiro, que tem hoje nove vitórias no MMA. Já o experiente americano fez 59 lutas, saindo vencedor em 42 delas.

One of Japan’s greatest idols and presently one of the country’s best MMA fighters at present, Shinya Aoki managed to sink his first submission in the USA this Saturday, when he overcame Lyle Beerbohm at the Strikeforce show in San Diego.

The black belt imposed his Jiu-Jitsu savvy and didn’t spare his opponent a painful neck crank from back mount while still in the first round.

Some of the greatest fighters on the planet did battle this Saturday in San Diego. And there was no lack of action at Strikeforce event held in San Diego, as you can see in the photos by Esther Lin.

In the evening’s main event, welterweight champion Nick Diaz successfully defended his belt against the dangerous Paul Daley, a former UFC fighter. The Cesar Gracie student notched his tenth win in a row and twenty-fifth of his career (25w-7l-1d), by first-round knockout. Now he sets his sights on a future showdown with his UFC counterpart, Georges Saint-Pierre.

Another Cesar Gracie student defending his title on the night, Gilbert Melendez too was more than rose to the occasion. He put away stalwart Japanese fighter Tatsuya Kawajiri by TKO also in the first round.

In other main card fights, former UFC fighter Keith Jardine fought to a draw with Gegard Mousasi, while submission savant Shinya Aoki imposed his Jiu-Jitsu on Lyle Beerbohm, winning by rear-naked choke still in the first round.

Um dos grandes ídolos japoneses e entre os melhores representantes da terra do sol nascente no MMA atual, Shinya Aoki conseguiu a sua primeira finalização nos EUA neste sábado, quando derrotou Lyle Beerbohm. A luta foi no Strikeforce, em San Diego.

O faixa-preta impôs o seu Jiu-Jitsu elástico e não poupou o adversário com um justo mata-leão.

Alguns dos melhores lutadores do planeta estiveram em ação neste sábado, em San Diego, em mais uma edição do Strikeforce, e não faltou ação, como é possível observar nas fotos de Esther Lin.

Na principal luta da noite, o campeão meio-médio Nick Diaz manteve o cinturão contra o perigoso Paul Daley, ex-lutador do UFC. Ainda no round inicial, o aluno de Cesar Gracie nocauteou para chegar à 10a vitória seguida, a 25ª da carreira (25v-7d-1e). Nos planos, um futuro combate contra Georges St-Pierre, campeão da mesma categoria, mas no UFC.

Aluno de Cesar Gracie que também defendia o título, mas o de leves, Gilbert Melendez também foi bem em seu desafio. Contra a fera do Japão Tatsuya Kawajiri, conseguiu o nocaute técnico na primeira parcial.

Em outras das lutas principais, o ex-UFC Keith Jardine empatou com Gegard Mousasi. Já a fera da luta de chão Shinya Aoki impôs o Jiu-Jitsu contra Lyle Beerbohm e finalizou com um mata-leão, ainda no primeiro assalto.

On March 14, while Japan fell victim to earthquakes and tsunamis, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Shinya Aoki (26w, 5l) cried.

But there was joy and the hope of better days in his tears. On that day of woe, the Strikeforce fighter made a touching post on his blog, which in loose translation said:

Some years ago, I was just a little person of 22 or 23 years of age, and Dream Stage Entertainment, the company that owned Pride, hired me to become a great fighter. From there on, many people helped me. Now, I am the father of a little person. I’m here, very happy and crying as I look into my son’s eyes. Today I am a fighter, and I must fight for all those people who supported me,” wrote the Yuki Nakai black belt.

On March 14, while the world cried and felt lament for Japan, the baby Aoki was born. It is for him – and for the other inhabitants of the country – that Shinya Aoki plans to put on a gala exhibition this Saturday, against Lyle Beerbohm.

So far Shinya has only has one fight at Strikeforce, a 2010 fight he lost to Gilbert Melendez by judges’ decision. It’s time to be reborn. That’s why it would be a good idea to keep an eye on him. The father is ready to put on a Jiu-Jitsu show this Saturday.

No dia 14 de março, enquanto o Japão sucumbia a terremotos e tsunamis, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jisu Shinya Aoki (26v, 5d) chorava.

Mas em suas lágrimas havia alegria e esperança em dias melhores. Naquele dia de lamentos, o atleta do Strikeforce postou em seu blog um texto tocante, que numa tradução livre dizia o seguinte:

“Alguns anos atrás, eu era apenas uma pessoa pequena de 22 ou 23 anos, e a Dream Stage Entertainment, dona do Pride, me contratou para me transformar num grande lutador. A partir daí, muitas pessoas me ajudaram. Hoje, sou pai de uma pequena pessoa. Estou aqui, muito feliz e chorando ao olhar para o meu filho. Hoje sou um lutador, e só posso lutar por todas aquelas pessoas que me apoiaram também”, escreveu o faixa-preta de Yuki Nakai.

No dia 14 de março, enquanto o mundo chorava e lamentava pelo Japão, nascia o bebê Aoki. É por ele, e pelos demais habitantes do país, que Shinya Aoki pretende fazer uma exibição de gala neste sábado, contra Lyle Beerbohm.

No Strikeforce, Shinya fez apenas uma luta, em 2010, quando perdeu para Gilbert Melendez por decisão dos jurados. A hora é de renascer. Por isso é bom ficar de olho nele. O papai promete dar um espetáculo de Jiu-Jitsu na noite de sábado.

Beerbohm, of Spokane, Washington, will enter what will be a dangerous-for-both-fighters lightweight (155 pounds) scrap with a record of 15-0. Healy, of St. Louis, is 25-17.

Tickets for Strikeforce’s third fight card in twenty-one days and second in the Lone Star State go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Central Time on Friday, January 21, and will be available at the Cedar Park Center ticket office, all Ticketmaster locations (800) 745-3000, Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com) and the show official website (www.strikeforce.com).

The first non-televised, undercard fight will begin at 7:30 p.m. Central Time. The doors open at 6:45 p.m.

Both Beerbohm and Healy are highly skilled 155-pounders who are trying to position themselves to contend for a possible shot at champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez.

The experienced Healy has faced top quality opposition and is no stranger to a big fight. He showed his ability and tremendous determination in his last start, pushing former lightweight champion Josh Thomson to the limit before getting submitted (rear-naked choke) at 4:27 of the third and final scheduled round on June 26, 2010.

All Beerbohm has done is win convincingly.

Beerbohm will be making his fourth start for Strikeforce and his main event debut. In his last outing, Beerbohm won a split-decision over Jiu-Jitsu world champion Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro on May 15, 2010. It was only the second time one of Beerbohm’s fights went the distance.

A 5-foot-10, three-year pro, Beerbohm, who turns 32 on Feb. 5, has since fought twice, both times in his home state of Washington. He is coming off a 2:48, first-round submission (guillotine choke) over Talon Hoffman on Dec. 4, 2010.

Beerbohm literally began his pro career after serving 366 days at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla as a result of felony convictions, all related to a crystal meth addiction. The day he was freed from prison, he visited a Jiu-Jitsu gym. He had his first amateur fight eight days after being released.

Since entering MMA, Beerbohm has found a discipline and determination that was missing in his life. “If I didn’t go to prison, I probably would be dead today,” he said. “Because I wouldn’t get cleaned up. I wouldn’t go to rehab. I wouldn’t get off the drugs. I didn’t want to get off the drugs. (Finally) I traded one addiction for the other. I traded meth for MMA.”

A top wrestler in high school, Beerbohm is a brawler who can switch between southpaw and orthodox stances. He went 12-0 in the amateurs, in spite of the obstacles he had to overcome. Although the vast majority of his fights have ended early and he’s recorded more KO’s than submissions, he still considers himself a grappler.

Beerbohm, whose nickname is derived from the custom-made, multi-colored trunks sewn by his mother, owns wins over former world Muay Thai champion and UFC veteran Duane “Bang’’ Ludwig as well as UFC vet Rafaello Oliveira. Beerbohm submitted (bulldog choke) Ludwig in the first round, on June 19, 2009.

“I want to fight the best, I want to fight for the title,’’ said Beerbohm, the head of Washington’s Fancy Pants Fight Team. “All I can do is continue to work hard and beat who they put in front of me. This is going to be a very difficult fight for both of us, but I’m confident of winning and moving up the ranks.

“I am very anxious to show the fans what I can do. My goal is to fight for the world title. I want to be the champ. I want a five-round fight. That would be something else.’’

A member of Team Quest, Healy has been an active MMA fighter for nearly a decade. He’s ousted big-name, quality opponents all

over the world since turning pro in August 2001, including Paul “Semtex’’ Daley, Carlos Condit and Dan Hardy.

Healy has won three of his last four bouts, and six of eight. “I was disappointed I didn’t quite get it done the last time, but I appreciate getting another opportunity against an up-and-coming fighter,’’ Healy said. “This fight is obviously very important to me. I’ll enter the cage with a lot of confidence.’’

Healy got his start in MMA at the age of 15, shortly after he and a brother stood up to a neighborhood bully and Muay Thai practitioner. Following the altercation, Pat wanted to learn more about technical fighting and sought out MMA gyms for formal training.

To supplement his MMA training regimen, he wrestled in high school, gaining All State accolades and eventually went on to wrestle at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. Following college, Pat knew that he had the potential to do something great and devoted himself fulltime to an MMA career.

Healy believes that cardio is his strength and that it allows him to pressure and break his opponents mentally.

Strikeforce Challengers 12 went down this Friday in Mississippi.

In the evening’s main event, Justin Wilcox overcame Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro via unanimous decision. With the win, Wilcox notches his fifth in a row and fourth in Strikeforce. Shaolin, on the other hand, is seeing hard times, as he loses his third in a row.

“I looked to fight standing. At AKA (American Kickboxing Academy) we have the best standup game,” said Wilcox, now tipped to face the undefeated Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm.
