Leonardo Saggioro won the adult black belt open class division after a final against Lucas Rocha.

He also won the lightweight division.

Um dos atletas mais técnicos da Checkmat, Lucas Leite chega nas cabeças dos principais torneios de Jiu-Jitsu desde 2007, quando foi campeão mundial na faixa-preta.

Dedicado e estudioso, Lucas voltou a vencer no Pan da IBJJF 2015, no último dia 15 de março, na Califórnia. O faixa-preta venceu no peso pesado, após uma goleada de 20 a 2 sobre Lucas Rocha (GB).

“Foi tudo como eu queria. Acho que um dos melhores momentos da minha carreira foi nesse campeonato, não tem como não reconhecer. Ganhei de faixa-roxa leve em 2004, depois venci como faixa-preta no leve, no médio e duas vezes no pesado. Acho que se não fosse pelo Pan eu nunca teria vindo para Califórnia e realizado meu sonho de viver do Jiu-Jitsu”, analisou o campeão.

Lucas deixou para o leitor de GRACIEMAG cinco aspectos que podem ajudá-lo a ser um campeão na arte suave.

1. Treino específico

“Uma das minhas características é que não costumo perder posições básicas, passagem, montada ou quando pego as costas. O Léo Vieira sempre passa muito treino específico, isso deixa você afiado”, ensina Lucas.

2. Tenha humildade

“Sempre tenha humildade. Todo mundo vai bater um dia, e perder faz parte da vida e das artes maciais”, diz o paulista.

3. Estude o Jiu-Jitsu

“Estudar Jiu-Jitsu também é treino. Saiba que você é quem constrói o seu sonho e que não vai ser fácil. Apenas estude e continue treinando, nunca culpe sua equipe ou professor pelos seus fracassos”, aconselha o faixa-preta da Checkmat.

4. Respeite seu corpo

“Treine forte, mas seja inteligente. Saiba respeitar seu corpo”, alerta Lucas.

5. Procure um ambiente agradável

“Ache um ambiente amigável com pessoas que lhe querem bem, e tenham o mesmo sonho que você no Jiu-Jitsu. Faz muita diferença”, finaliza.

Eram 22h18 no Brasil, quando o astro do Jiu-Jitsu Bernardo Faria fez o que poucos fizeram. Com habilidade e muita pressão, o faixa-preta da Alliance movimentou-se justinho e conseguiu enfim anular as pernas de Leandro Lo. Aos cinco minutos da final do absoluto, estava transposta a guarda do fenomenal peso médio treinado por Cícero Costha.

A esta altura, o placar estava 7 a 4 para o professor que treina em Nova York, após uma guerra de raspagens, mas Bê não deu chance para o azar. Aproveitou a posição de vantagem, enlaçou a lapela em torno do pescoço de Leandro e arrochou, sem defesa. Com o feito, Bernardo deixou Irvine com o ouro no superpesado e no absoluto.

Gabi Garcia sufoca Mackenzie Dern no absoluto

Na final do aberto feminino, Gabi também mostrou pressão parecida, contra Mackenzie Dern. A estrela da Alliance começou derrubando logo no início, 2 a 0. Depois, passou a guarda toureando, aos 4min, e aos 7min20 pegou o pescoço de Mackenzie, que lutou bravamente.

Peso médio: Leandro Lo vence Otávio Sousa por 5 a 0

A primeira final da faixa-preta adulto masculino deu-se às 20h30 em ponto (horário de Brasília). Os pesos médios Leandro Lo e Otávio Sousa, finalistas do último Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, colidiram mais uma vez pelo ouro. Lo, vencedor nas últimas batalhas, tratou de puxar para a guarda rapidamente, mantendo Otávio na guarda aberta. Com precisamente cinco minutos de luta, como se estivesse esperando o relógio avançar, Lo investiu na raspagem. Otávio bambeou mas não caiu, e os dois ficaram em pé. O aluno de Cícero Costha não pensou em mudar de tática, e de novo puxou para a aberta, tentou raspar, trocou para um triângulo que escorregou e virou uma omoplata. Lo aproveitou-se da distração de Otávio, preocupado em não dar bobeira nessa blitz de botes, e enfim raspou, usando sua alavanca tradicional.

O professor da GB, atrás no placar por 2 a 0, até que tentou. Mas Lo seguia firme por cima, e no último minuto ampliou o placar para 5 a 0, quando Otávio precisou se expor para correr atrás do placar e acabou vendo Lo empurrar a guarda de pernas, inverter o lado e concluir a passagem de guarda.

Lo eliminara, na semifinal, Victor Estima (GB), em mais uma grande luta, com a raspagem salvadora vindo apenas no fim da luta.

Peso-galo: Bruno Malfacine finaliza Caio Terra no pescoço

A final dos galos também trouxe velhos arquiinimigos, mas o desfecho foi rápido. Bruno Malfacine surpreendeu Caio ao girar com agilidade para as costas. Em vez de botar os ganchos, o campeão da Alliance apertou o estrangulamento com a lapela e foi encurralando Caio, até os três tapinhas.

Peso-pena: Gianni Grippo vence Moizinho por 6 a 4

No peso-pena, Gianni Grippo e Osvaldo “Queixinho” Moizinho disputaram quem envolvia quem na teia da guarda 50/50. Ao sair na frente do placar, Grippo acabou bem-sucedido. O faixa-preta de Marcelo Garcia raspou por último para abrir 6 a 4. Moizinho deu tudo de si até soar o gongo, mas não conseguiu ficar por cima.

Peso leve: JT campeão em goleada

A final dos leves envolveu o sempre consistente Jonathan “JT” Torres e a surpresa AJ Agazarm, que eliminou Gabriel Rollo num lutão, na semifinal. JT sobrou na final, começando a goleada com uma raspagem, que abriu caminho para o placar de 10 a 0 contra o lutador da GB. No fim, de guarda passada, JT ainda tentou um bonito arrocho no braço, mas AJ não se entregou.

Lucas Leite leva mais um ouro para a coleção

No peso pesado, Lucas vs Lucas. O Rocha, da GB, havia chegado à final após virada nos últimos segundos contra a muralha Tim Spriggs. Mas, contra a experiência de Lucas Leite, não conseguiu repetir o feito. Rocha começou raspando, mas Lucas Leite manteve a cabeça no lugar, raspou e montou com habilidade, e no fim venceu por 20 a 2, um passeio impressionante em Irvine.

Trans finaliza em segundos

Na final peso pesadíssimo, o dinamarquês Alexander Trans (Emirates Team) deu uma de Ronda Rousey, e arrochou o joelho de James Puopolo (Ribeiro JJ) em 17 segundos, ao puxar e esticar a perna do faixa-preta americano.

The Pan No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship is already filling up its athlete list. Scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27 at the City College of New York in New York City, the event will bring the best no-gi players to fight for the Pan title.

As of now, the registration is at 76% capacity. The original registration deadline is Sept. 19, however the IBJJF will close the registration prior to the deadline if capacity reaches 100%.

So this means, if you are planning to compete this month for the Pan No-Gi title, get your travel accommodations arranged and register on www.ibjjf.org

The venue is the Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of the City College of New York located at: 160 Convent Ave. NY, NY 10031.

BJJ black belt professor from Gracie Barra Arcadia in Los Angeles, CA, Lucas Rocha taught on May 17th a special self-defense class at the US Army recruiting center Azusa for 150 attendees.

According to Prof. Lucas, the class aimed to sharpen the US soldier’s self-defense skills through Jiu-Jitsu and bring them closer to the teaching of the martial art. The Brazilian black belt said he felt honored with this opportunity to show the military that Jiu Jitsu is much more than what they see in the competitions and MMA events on TV.

Besides working on self-defense that can be used by the soldiers in their day-to-day lives, the black belt professor explained that Jiu Jitsu has different focus points, which are often imperceptible, like the possibilities of socialization, a healthy lifestyle and the respect between partners.

About his visit to the US Army recruiting center, Lucas Rocha said:

“I saw discipline and willingness to learn, it was something that caught my attention. I admire the work they carry out and I am honored to share a bit of my art and my lifestyle with them today. I am very grateful to the US Army for having received us here so well.”

The belt levels grow from white belt to orange belt to all the way up to brown belt. The ages range from teenager to mother but the appreciation for Jiu-Jitsu, no matter the specific reason, is a shared thread. They all come from Gracie Barra schools in Northridge, Irvine, Dana Point and more.

Some compete, some train for the health benefits, some appreciate the confidence they gain and all of them recommend Jiu-Jitsu for everyone.

The 2014 IBJJF Las Vegas Spring Open on May 3 is closing its registration soon. You have until Friday, April 25 to put your name on the list for the tournament that always provides a great weekend getaway.

Already on the list to compete are athletes like Charlene Coats, Leonardo D’avila, Jackson Sousa, Eliot Kelly, Ben Baxter, Lucas Rocha, Yuri Simoes, Sinistro Iturralde, Brandon Mullins, Gabriel Moraes, Gustavo Carpio, Vitor Paschoal, Davin Maxwell and Ana Laura Cordeiro who is making her debut after being out of competition for years.

2013 Abu Dhabi WPJJC: Buchecha and Rodolfo in Action During the Open Class Final; photo by Dan Rod

The last day of the 2013 Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship came to a close after its fourth day. The Saturday open weight finals day was full of varied action from the very start. All divisions warmed up in their respectable bullpen mats and every division was represented on the competition mats throughout.

Instead of dividing the day by rank, gender or age, the organization chose to run all divisions at once, leaving every mat engaged with combat from young to old, beginner to expert. By the time the finals began, everyone in the crowd was ready to see who would be crowned for each division. You can see the full results below.

The brown belt adult male open division ended in a very peculiar way. Paulo Miyao and Keenan Cornelius both made their way to the final as they usually do together. So far in this year alone, they have met in the open weight finals in the Europeans, the Pans and now the WPJJC. As with all of their matches together, they pulled double guard and worked from there. Keenan’s strategy revolves around the advantage from coming up in a double guard pull situation. Knowing that the Miyao brothers will avoid playing top with him, he can stay on bottom as well, avoiding their backtake and footlock attempts until the last moment where he scores. The referee was not in favor of this strategy in Abu Dhabi and gave penalties one after another to both. At about the four minute mark, after he saw they were not improving the level of action, both were disqualified. Visibly shocked and confused, they were out of the money prize and medal, allowing third place athlete Kaue Damasceno from Nova Uniao to take the top spot on the podium. Ironically, he was also disqualified in his match with Keenan in the semi-finals for a slam.

The black belt male adult open division came through after eight brackets leaving the semi-finals and the finals left. Marcus Almeida Buchecha made his way beating Roberto “Tussa” Alencar with a knee bar and then Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu in the quarterfinals by points. The semi-final match for Buchecha was against Tarsis Humphreys where he outscored Tarsis 7-0 for his spot in the final. Rodolfo Vieira made his way to the final with one of his matches by choking Lucas Rocha from the back and also beating Claudio Calasans by points in the semi-final. Tarsis and Claudio fought for third with the win by points going to Claudio Calasans.

Andre Galvao was cut short in the open weight division after a bout with Tarsis Humphreys. The runner-up of the 2013 Pan black belt open weight division was very distraught over the loss that came by penalty. Both Tarsis and Andre had one advantage but before the six minute match ended, the referee decided that Andre’s passing was not active enough and gave him a stalling penalty, voiding the existing advantage he had earned earlier in the match. This caused a 1-0 in advantage lead by Tarsis Humphreys over Andre Galvao creating a commotion by Galvao who asked for witnesses to support him in his objection. Unfortunately, the decision was final and Galvao was no longer in the running for double gold. He won the -88kg black belt adult division the previous day.

Gabrielle Garcia counts her fourth year of winning at the Abu Dhabi WPJJC, winning her sixth gold medal today. She met Beatriz Mesquita in the final, just like at Pan Ams this year and again won her over by points. Beatriz Mesquita made her way to the final by beating Luanna Alzuguir for the second time in this tournament as she also defeated her in the division the day before. Gabi Garcia submitted Mackenzie Dern in the semi-finals repeating the same feat as she did at the Pan Ams this year as well. The third place was left for Mackenzie and Luanna to battle it out, where Luanna passed Mackenzie’s guard to secure enough points for a bronze medal.

The final black belt adult male open weight match can be seen below between two hungry athletes. Rodolfo Vieira took hold of the match in the first minute however Buchecha came back full force. Both fought until the very end getting into many different positions along the way, even 50/50 but always engaging in progressive action. Campeão mundial no peso leve, a fera Leandro Lo agora busca novos desafios. Agora de vez no peso médio, o fenômeno guardeiro treinado por Cícero Costha espera enfrentar no Pan 2013, este fim de semana, oponentes de jogos diferentes para testar seu Jiu-Jitsu.

De quebra, o faixa-preta promete se desdobrar para tentar o absoluto, no sábado.

“Eu trenei bastante no camp do Caio Terra, fiz três treinos por dia de Jiu-Jitsu, com rolas e treinos específicos. Tinha muito faixa-marrom e preta bom, e estou pronto”, disse Leandrinho em papo com o repórter Ivan Trindade, exibido ao vivo de Irvine na nossa página no Google Plus.

“Quero o ouro no peso médio. Sei que só tem luta complicada desde a primeira, mas para mim o bronze ou a prata é igual perder na primeira luta. Vou ficar triste, como qualquer competidor fica”, completou.

Leandro Lo avaliou a mudança de peso:

“Estou com 78kg agora, preciso ganhar mais peso para ficar bem no médio. No fundo eu só precisava perder um ou dois quilos para bater o peso leve, mas preferi lutar de médio por opção, para encarar novos desafios, lutar com os caras diferentes. E eu quero ver como fica meu jogo no absoluto comendo bem, sem preocupação. Quando luto de leve, como menos e não fico tão forte”, disse.

Sobre o absoluto, Lo reconhece que a obrigação de vencer não é a mesma.

“Eu luto o absoluto mais para tirar o gelo, para ver como estou para o peso, no dia seguinte. Mas agora estou querendo ganhar, vou lutar o absoluto como seu estivesse lutando no peso. Vamos ver”, avisou.

Faixa-preta do professor Zé Radiola (GB Pernambuco), o campeão mundial Otavio Sousa vive uma situação curiosa. Mesmo sendo o melhor do mundo no peso médio, não é o franco favorito ao ouro no Pan 2013, dos dias 20 a 24 de março, em Irvine, na Califórnia.

O motivo? A quantidade quase inacreditável de pedreiras que acabaram caindo na divisão da fera, este ano – nomes como Leandro Lo, Kayron Gracie, DJ Jackson, Clark Gracie, Rafael Formiga, Vitor Henrique, Lucas Rocha, Marcelo Mafra etc etc…

GracieMag: Como estão os treinos no QG da Gracie Barra, com tantos amigos reunidos?

OTAVIO SOUSA: Estão perfeitos, agora é segurar a vontade de lutar logo. Meu professor Zé Radiola, meus amigos e parceiros de treino de Recife estão quase todos aqui comigo na Califórnia. Com isso estou corrigindo falhas todos os dias, e o pessoal me dando aquela força. Já estou treinando forte há um bom tempo e agora ficou 100%. Queria agradecer a todos que fizeram parte do meu treinamento, toda galera que treina na academia do Rômulo Barral, meus alunos da GB Headquarters, enfim todo o pessoal da Gracie Barra.

Qual o plano para colocar novamente a medalha dourada no pescoço?

Como sempre a categoria médio é sempre uma das mais disputadas, cheias de grandes nomes e ainda com atletas duros chegando da marrom. Definitivamente só vai ter lutão, e vou dar meu máximo. Agora estou com meu jogo bastante afiado, bem justo e me vejo mais maduro também. A cabeça está bem melhor do que há tempos atrás, e me sinto mais confiante.

Como funciona este seu aspecto mental na hora da competição, Otavio?

Na minha forma de ver Jiu-Jitsu, a cabeça é tudo na hora da luta. Se você estiver bem de cabeça no dia do campeonato, e tiver feito o dever de casa direitinho todos os dias, a chance de você se dar bem é grande. Então acho que tenho essas armas para me sagrar campeão neste Pan. O dever de casa foi feito e a cabeça esta ótima.

Você aprendeu muito com as derrotas para o Kron (Metamoris) e para seu companheiro Rominho (IBJJF Pro League), no fim da última temporada?

Toda derrota só faz deixar o atleta ainda mais forte, pelo menos no meu caso, pois odeio perder. Quando isso ocorre eu começo a treinar mais forte que nunca, para não perder de novo. Sem dúvida eles são dois grandes atletas, tanto Rominho quanto Kron, ambos são muito duros. Essas lutas só me fizeram ainda mais forte para a temporada 2013.
