Em ritmo alucinante nos campeonatos, com ouro e pódio em boa parte dos torneios que participou nesta temporada, Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa conseguiu um tempinho no seu frenético cronograma para trazer para você, estudioso leitor de GRACIEMAG, uma valiosa passagem de guarda.

Na aula, Hulk mostra sua duas opções prediletas para passar a guarda-x. O professor da Atos Jiu-Jitsu ressalta, primeiramente, a importância de manter uma boa postura, se livrando das pegadas do adversário, evitando que o guardeiro se estique para tirar-lhe a base.

Em seguida, Lucas troca o eixo de seu posicionamento por cima para se livrar com mais facilidade da arapuca da guarda, para em seguida jogar o corpo lateralmente e cair passando. Para concluir e estabilizar, Lucas mostra duas opções: ou anda para trás com os quadris e estabiliza no cem-quilos, ou gira por cima da cabeça e ganha as costas.

Lucas Barbosa was the big winner of the Las Vegas Open, which ended last weekend. The Atos fighter dominated the medium heavyweight and open divisions, winning five bouts with four submissions.

His open-division final was against Yan Lucas of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu. “I knew Yan was a tough athlete, and I won on advantages,” Barbosa told Graciemag. “I put my takedown game into practice and almost managed to finish the fight at certain points, but he defended well against my choke attempt — he’s tough. Yan was a world champion in the brown belt, and he has beaten tough athletes like Mahamed Aly. But I was able to apply my game, I had good moments in the fight, and I walked away with the win.

“I arrived from Abu Dhabi last week and was still feeling a little jet-lagged, and I had trained only a few times — I think twice — before the championship. I was thinking about not fighting in the Open, but André Galvão talked to me, motivated me, and I went to fight. I felt good during the competition, and now I’m adjusting to the time zone.”

A two-time no-gi world champion, Barbosa aims to finally win the gi title this year. “Every championship I fight in is a warm-up to the Worlds and the big championships,” he said. “It’s always good to fight in the IBJJF’s opens, because, as well as winning some good points for the ranking, there’s a good level, and you get to prepare for the bigger tournaments. I think I was lacking experience to win the Worlds. I only have a year and a half as a black-belt, and each day, with each championship, I’m learning more. I’m also training a lot with the Atos people, and my teacher has been helping me a lot. It’s necessary to have calm, really, and to train hard. I’m feeling good, and I think this Worlds will be different.”

No sábado, o craque conquistou o ouro absoluto após vencer o ex-UFC Vinny Magalhães por uma vantagem, depois de um duelo de raspagens. Lucas relembrou o duelo e destrinchou em detalhes:

“Bom, foi uma luta bem dura. Sabia que não poderia atacar o pé ou braço dele, porque ele tem boa flexibilidade nas articulações. Então, procurei pontuar e impor meu jogo. Ele conseguiu me raspar e depois raspei de volta. Mas eu estava perdendo no placar, pois tinha uma punição. Faltando dez segundos para o fim, abri a guarda e bati na lateral dele para ganhar a vantagem e assim vencer a luta”, conta Lucas, antes de analisar a campanha geral na Califórnia.

“Deu para aquecer as turbinas e graças a Deus ocorreu tudo bem. Acredito que estou entre os melhores do mundo. Qualquer um da divisão que for lutar comigo sabe que não pode dar mole, porque se der o Hulk vai passar por cima. Eu respeito todos da divisão e acredito que eles também respeitam meu Jiu-Jitsu. Este ano promete muita coisa”, diz.

Com um jogo rico de quedas e movimentos variados, Hulk também mostrou bom desempenho ao vencer o absoluto da competição no domingo. Desta vez, sem o tradicional paletó, Hulk bateu Eliot Kelly (Yemaso Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). A seguir, o aluno de André Galvão detalha o duelo.

“O Eliot tem um wrestling muito bom, ele tinha acabado de vencer o Vinny na categoria. A primeira vez que lutei com ele venci por 5 a 0, com uma queda e uma passagem de guarda. Mas dessa vez ele veio com uma estratégia diferente. Ele trabalhou bastante clinche, porém eu estava sempre entrando nas pernas dele, indo pro double-leg ou single-leg. Deu certo e consegui ser campeão”, finaliza Lucas.

Mahamed Aly at the 2015 Worlds

Every year the black belt division gets a boost of talent as brown belts get promoted and add even more hardship to the game.

The 2016 world championship will be no exception, as a bunch of the best brown belts in 2015 will be registered for the black belt division.

We have highlighted 8 of these newcomers, but there are many more out there.

Here we go.

Michael Musumeci Jr.

The 2015 brown belt light-featherweight world champion has already debuted in the black belt division in great fashion. Looking incredibly thin, he signed up for the roosterweight division at the 2016 Pan and made it to the top of the podium. For the 2016 Worlds, Mikey and his sister Tammi have moved to California to train with Gui and Rafa Mendes at AOJ Academy, which should generate some great results. Mikey is signed up for the roosterweight once again, but maybe going up to light-feather is his best chance to win another gold medal for Team USA, which doesn’t happen in the male division since 2007.

Edwin Najmi

Just like Musumeci, Najmi won his division (lightweight) at the 2015 Worlds. After getting his black belt, he struck gold for the first time at the 2016 Pan, with a beautiful Estima lock on Francisco Iturralde. The 2016 Worlds black belt lightweight division will be a true mine field, with Lucas Lepri, Michael Langhi, AJ Agazarm, JT Torres, etc. Najmi is another big talent to make things even more complicated.

Yago Souza

Another PSLPB Cicero Costha talent, Yago Souza closed out the brown belt middleweight division in 2015 with his teammate Manuel Ribamar Filho. Then, he got his black belt and already did great at the 2016 European and the 2016 Pan, wining the middleweight division both in Lisbon and Irvine. It should interesting to see Yago going against the likes of Otavio Sousa, Claudio Calasans Jr, Victor Estima and Vitor Oliveira, just to name a few.

The 2015 brown belt open class runner-up also transitioned to the black belt and has already made his presence felt. He finished third in the heavyweight division at the 2016 Pan and won the same division at the recent 2016 Brazilian Nationals. The heavyweight division with the likes of Tim Spriggs, André Galvão, Erberth Santos, Jackson Souza, among others should be a great challenge for the newcomer.

The double gold campaign at the 2015 Worlds puts some pressure on Aly for his first Worlds as a black belt. Already registered in the ultra-heavy division, Mahamed should encounter some big competition, including Alex Trans, Marcus Buchecha, Gabriel Lucas, João Gabriel Rocha, among others.

Another talent coming out of Romulo Barral’s lineage, Arges finished third at the brown belt middleweight division of the 2015 Worlds. As a black belt, he did great at the 2015 Irvine Open and then travelled to Lisbon for another great showing at the 2016 European, closing out the medium-heavy division with his Professor Barral.

Mansher Khera

Fresh out of Marcelo Garcia’s talent factory, Khera (and his teammate Jon Satava) will be making his first appearance at the Worlds as a black belt. They could have done it last year, but they did not have time to add up the 50pts necessary to qualify after being promoted. Khera is signed up for the lightweight division while Satava is registered for the middleweight.

The Hulk won the brown belt medium-heavy division at the 2016 Worlds. After getting his black belt, he jumped right into the mix and managed some big results. most importantly the medium-heavy division at the 2015 Worlds No-Gi. Just recently, he won the medium-heavy division at the 2016 Las Vegas Open. Lucas should be another big hurdle at the medium-heavy in Long Beach.
