Após 31 anos como faixa-preta, o campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu Roberto “Gordo” Correa (1996) recebeu sua faixa-coral, junto ao amigo Helio “Soneca” Moreira.

Eles receberam a faixa-coral sétimo grau das mãos de mestre Renzo Gracie no último domingo, 28 de janeiro, na Flórida, EUA.

O evento contou com a presença de grandes nomes da arte, velhos amigos da dupla. Caso dos tambem mestres Rilion Gracie e Jorge Pereira, além de feras como Rafael Gordinho, Alexandre Soca, Vinicius Draculino, Marcio Pé de Pano, o fundador de GRACIEMAG Luca Atalla, entre muitos outros alunos e admiradores.

Os agora mestres Gordo e Soneca ganharam faixas personalizadas da empresa Choke Sports, feitas a mão no Japão, com seus nomes e graus bordados.

The moment of the double DQ in Abu Dhabi

The fan side of almost all of us applauded the attitude of the referee to disqualify the two finalists of the brown belt adult absolute in Abu Dhabi, during the WPJJC 2013.

This is because, deep down, we all wanted to watch an electrifying fight, with comings and goings of these two great Jiu-Jitsu athletes.

It turns out that combats between two great fighters not always translate into big fights.

Does anyone remember the moments before the fight between B.J. Penn and Matt Serra in September 2002? Most of us awaited the greatest ground combat in UFC history! And what we saw was a battle fought standing up. I bet neither of these two champions consider that episode in the list of their best moments.

This is just one example. Fabio Gurgel and Amaury Bitetti fought countless times in the 1990s, and their contests were rarely decided by more than two points. The most interesting thing is that most people harshly criticized the technique of the winner (usually Amaury), but the reason for the restrained fight was the highest level techniques of both were equal, not by a lack of technique like it was suggested.

Even one of the greatest submitters of the late 1990s, Nino Schembri, found himself holding the fight during a match in which he opened five points ahead of another submitting monster, Fernando Margarida, in a fight held in São Paulo.

And even someone who is possibly the greatest submitter in the history of Jiu-Jitsu competition, Roger Gracie, spent a good amount of time “resting” in Marcus Buchecha’s closed guard during the confrontation of the two in Metamoris, simply because it was the most prudent thing to do at that moment.

We need to distinguish bravery from intelligence and strategy, not encouraging an immoderate courage, bordering suicide.

Again, our frustration as fans watching Keenan Cornelius and Paulo Miyao not coming to kill and die is easier to reflect a perverse side of celebrating the disqualification of both. 

But whether you agree or not with the attitude of the referee, it is not fair to judge the Jiu-Jitsu of these two athletes by the fight against one another, and use it to deconstruct the technical qualities of both.

Leveled and monotonous fights are not a privilege of the current generation; they always existed and will always exist. But if you want to analyze the techniques and momentum of two of the best brown belts today, it makes more sense to observe their fights against other opponents.

You will then notice that Paulo Miyao impresses, taming monsters far beyond his 61kg since he was a blue belt, and that the percentage of submissions performed by Keenan Cornelius is as high as his notable predecessors as “kings” of brown belt, such as Ronaldo Jacare, Marcio Pe de Pano and Fernando Margarida.

I don’t even know Keenan and Paulo personally. But I admire the Jiu-Jitsu they present far beyond what is perceived in the confrontation between them.

For half an hour, “Buchecha” talked about training for the 2013 season, the big titles he won so far, the Metamoris fight with Roger Gracie and his expectations for the future.

He even picked a favorite for the upcoming UFC 158’s main event between Georges St-Pierre and. Nick Diaz.

Minha abordagem às perguntas é a mesma, por exemplo, de quando um dos meus alunos de Jiu-Jitsu pede para eu mostrar uma posição mágica para não ser raspado enquanto passa a guarda: “Vamos trabalhar a sua postura”.

Eu poderia entrar em detalhes e mostrar diversas técnicas para ele abrir e passar a guarda, mas postura é o principal, indiscutivelmente. Da mesma forma, também poderia listar todos os alimentos que como diariamente. O problema é que isso muda muito. O que não varia são os fundamentos. Por isso eu elaborei meus princípios na lista abaixo. Espero que ajude.

Açaí, suco de maça fresco, mel e tâmaras--Busque o alimento completo, orgânico, vegetal e concentrado em antioxidantes. E não fique com fome.

1. Planta, não proteína

As pessoas me perguntam direto: “De onde você pega a sua proteína?”; e eu sempre respondo: “Para que você quer proteína?”. Sério, proteína é totalmente superestimada. Seu corpo pode absorver proteína até das células mortas. Além disso, grãos integrais, nozes, algas, sementes e até certas frutas têm proteína. Se eu tivesse que escolher apenas uma das muitas lições que o Grande Mestre Carlos Gracie deixou, seria a abordagem baseada em frutas às refeições. Proteína após ingerida é super ácida, e o que o seu corpo não absorve, dá um trabalho enorme para expelir. Meu lema é “melancia em vez de peru”.

2. Alimentos completos, e não suplementos ou comidas refinadas

O homem adora tentar ser mais esperto que a natureza, descobrindo o que é bom numa erva ou comida, extraindo só este componente e concentrando-o numa cápsula. De acordo com o pesquisador Colin Campbell, autor do livro “O estudo Chinês”, e de muitos outros cientistas, nem vitamina C em forma de suplemento é comprovadamente efetiva. O que é provado é que grupos de pessoas que tem uma dieta com alimentos ricos em vitamina C tem maior resistência a certas doenças. Coma a cenoura, não o suplemento de betacaroteno. Este mesmo princípio vale para explicar por que açúcar refinado é pior que cana de açúcar, e sal marinho é muito mais saudável que sal de cozinha refinado.

3. Superalimento

Superalimentos são apenas alimentos mais densos em nutrientes–principalmente antioxidantes–que os seus pares. Vamos comparar couve com alface. De acordo com o índice ANDI to supermercado Whole Foods, a couve leva nota 1000, enquanto a alface marca 389. Se você tiver que escolher só um deles, qual você escolheria? Este é o mesmo princípio do Jiu-Jitsu, você sempre procura o mínimo esforço para a máxima eficiência. Outros alimentos superdensos: açaí, espirulina, brócolis, castanha do Pará, sementes hemp, maca peruana, romã, cogumelos em geral, e muitos outros.

4. Orgânico

Vamos usar a lógica: você não quer ingerir pesticida, quer? Acredito até que o corpo estando saudável tira o veneno de letra, mas meu objetivo quando me alimento é sempre tentar dar o menor trabalho possível para o meu corpo fazer a digestão, e não fazer com que ele fique apagando incêndios. Por isso eu como alimentos orgânicos sempre que possível. É mais caro? Infelizmente sim. Mas conta de hospital é mais caro ainda, especialmente em tratamentos de doenças crônicas. Você não quer economizar em algo tão importante quanto a sua saúde.

5. Não fique com fome

Esta é a dica mais pessoal da lista. Meus amigos pensam que eu tenho uma força de vontade de aço. Meu segredo para você, hoje, é que não tenho. Só sou malandro o suficiente para evitar as tentações. E percebi que quanto mais eu fico com fome, mais eu vou ficar com uma vontade louca de comer algo não tão saudável, e que seja conveniente. Em outras palavras, três bananas vão satisfazer somente se eu comê-las antes de ficar morrendo de fome.

“We launched GRACIE Magazine in 1996 as an improvement on the defunct ‘Jornal Gracie’ (‘Gracie Newspaper’). Since then our format has changed several times, including the name, as the magazine is now just called GRACIEMAG,” says our director-in-chief Luca Atalla, in an interview published today on the KombatClinic.com website.

“In 2006 the magazine was made bilingual (in both English and Portuguese), so as to facilitate its export to the international market. But now all that has changed. First hand, I announce that the international version of GRACIEMAG will be published only in English and the Brazilian version only in Portuguese,” Luca reports. You think the news ends there?

No way. Our MMA magazine NOCAUTE will now reach English-reading readers. “That’s right, our international edition of GRACIEMAG will offer the new CHOKE MMA magazine, the English-language version of our traditional NOCAUTE, as a supplement,” reports Luca Atalla.

It’s tough finding a title that will do justice to all the goings-on surrounding the first birthday of Renzo Gracie Academy in Holmdel, New Jersey, this coming June 9 at 6:30 pm.

After all, a free seminar with Renzo Gracie packs enough of a punch. But he’s not the only draw. Besides Renzo, UFC fighters Matt Serra, Ricardo Almeida and current lightweight champion Frank Edgar will all be sharing the mat for the occasion.

All the academy’s teachers will be there: Rolles Gracie, Sérgio Ignácio, Steve Dollinger, Joe Ahlert and myself.

Black belts from across the region so far confirmed to appear are Igor Gracie, Jamal Patterson, Alan Theo, Mark Cerrone and Karl Pravec, though I’m sure a lot of other black belts will turn up. After all, everyone’s invited. (Follow @RollesGracie on Twitter and he’ll announce the teachers in attendance as they confirm.)

And the best part is that there’s no need to make a reservation or confirm you presence.
