Esta segunda-feira, 11 de janeiro, é o último dia de inscrição para o Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu de 2016, a ser realizado pela IBJJF a partir de 20 de janeiro.

Nos últimos dias de inscrição, alguns notórios favoritos apareceram na lista de atletas confirmados.

Casos de João e Paulo Miyao, Alan Finfou, Yan Cabral, Ítalo Lins, Thiago Abreu, Edwin Najmi, Alex Ceconi, Cassio Francis, Lucas Daniel, Diogo Moreno e Otávio Nalati.

O GRACIEMAG.com já havia noticiado a presença na lista de campeões da estirpe de Romulo Barral (meio-pesado) e Felipe Preguiça (pesado), da Gracie Barra, Marcio André da Nova União, de volta após contusão (peso-pena) e Erberth Santos (Ryan Gracie), que vai atuar de superpesado em Portugal.

Estarão em ação em Portugal, ainda, o peso-galo Koji Shibamoto, os plumas Gabriel Willcox e Hiago George, os pesos-penas Victor Genovesi, Renan Santos e Brian Mahecha, os leves Sandro Vieira e Kevin Mahecha, os pesos médios Nathan Mendelsohn, Oliver Geddes, Eduardo Rios, Matheus Costa e Gabriel Arges, os meio-pesados Max Carvalho e Patrick Gaudio, os pesados Jackson Sousa, Helvecio Penna, Kauê Damasceno e Felipe Bueno, o superpesado Agnaldo Luiz e o pesadíssimo Pedrinho Moura.

No feminino, Mackenzie Dern, Luiza Monteiro, Luanna Alzuguir, Kristina Barlaan, Shanti Abelha, Andresa Correa, Laurence Cousin, Jessica Cristina, Sarah Black, Yasmine Wilson e outras faixas-pretas vão brigar pelo pódio.

O Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu deste ano será realizado no pavilhão multiusos de Odivelas (Alameda do Porto Pinheiro 2675, Odivelas, Portugal),

From its beginning in 2011, the IBJJF London International Open has grown each year to become one of the premier events of the European BJJ scene. This was particularly evident this year when the demand was so great that the gi event had to close registration early because the competition was simply filled to capacity with entrants from all over Europe. Competitors from the United Kingdom and Ireland were out in force, but there were entries from Brazil, USA, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Romania to name just a few of the countries whose nationals had travelled to be part of the event.

With a wave of newer European black belts looking to secure qualification points for the Worlds in Long Beach next year as well as test the shark-infested waters of the black belt division, there was a mixture of both established talents and up-and-comers jostling for the places on the medal podium.

In the male light featherweight division, Marcel Oliveira of Frateri Lateri finished British black belt Mark Stephenson with a footlock in less than a minute of their bout and secured the first black belt title of the day.

In the featherweight division, Oxford-based Maximiliano Campos defeated Spaniard Sergio Calderon to claim the gold.

The lightweight division was one of the more competitive of the competition, with Switzerland-based Ilke Bulut defeating the UK’s Oliver Geddes in the final by three advantage points to one. Ilke’s route to the final took him past France’s Douglas Barcellos (by submission) and Brazil’s Italo Lins (by 4-2 on points), whilst Oliver overcame GFTeam’s Gabriel Rainho with a quick footlock.

Within Europe, the rivalries at middleweight are well established and usually tested at every competition within the circuit. This time around, Ireland’s Darragh O’Connaill defeated Italy’s Luca Anacoreta by 2 points to zero. Luca had managed to secure a guard pass towards the end of the match, but Darragh fought hard to prevent the three points and then managed to defend his lead until time expired.

Middle-heavyweight saw three competitors battling it out: France’s Julien Cazier, Poland’s Piotr Wojtkowski and another UK-based Polish fighter, Dominik Debiec. In the first bout, Piotr defeated Dominik by advantages. Dominik in turn defeated Julien to set up a revenge match in the final. Despite his best efforts, Piotr was able to place and keep hooks from the back to earn 4 points, more than enough to take the match and with it the gold medal.

The heavyweight division was won by Johannes Weith, a student of the Ribeiro brothers based in Germany. He defeated Checkmat’s Chico Mendes in the final with a choke from the back, leaving Norway-based Renato Tavares and Switzerland’s Karim Khalifa to collect their bronze medals and round out the division.

Finally, the ultra-heavyweight division saw Antonio Henrique Junior of Roger Gracie Team finish Christophe Levy by submission early in their ten-minute final match.

Italian Roosterweight Andrea Verdemare and British Super-Heavyweight Christopher Bowe were both alone in their divisions, readying themselves instead for the absolute.

Luca Anacoreta didn’t let his disappointment at his result in his division hold him back from putting on an impressive result in the absolute. After several matches, he faced off against Braulio Estima student Christopher Bowe in the openweight final. Christopher had defeated Sergio Calderon with a choke from the back and Renato Tavares on points on his side of the bracket, whilst Luca had defeated Alex Cabanes of Calasans BJJ in his semi-final. Although the fight itself was extremely competitive throughout, Luca eventually took the victory and the absolute title by the slimmest of margins, a referee decision.

Not content to let the male competitors have all the fun, there was plenty of action in the female divisions, too. Multiple-time world champion Luanna Alzuguir of Alliance took on three-time world bronze medallist Shanti Abelha of Checkmat in the middleweight division. Despite Shanti initially displaying a strong top game, an omoplata eventually lead to a sweep that gave Luanna the victory by 2 points to zero.

At featherweight, meanwhile, the first European black belt world champion, Laurence Cousin of France, faced Yasmine Wilson of Roger Gracie London. Even though no points were scored during the course of the ten minute match, Laurence was able to advance and secure the half guard of Yasmine three times to earn the three advantages required to give her the victory and with it the London Open title.

With no one else within her weight class, Victor Estima student Gretchen Zoeller had to content herself by waiting for the absolute division.

Although Luanna decided to sit out of the absolute this time around, the remaining four ladies were still very much in pursuit of the absolute title they wanted. Shanti defeated Yasmine by a single advantage in the first semi-final, whilst Laurence defeated Gretchen. The absolute final came down, then, to Laurence against Shanti, and after ten minutes of hard-fought action, Laurence was the victor and female absolute champion of the London Open.

Veja como a fera da Alliance venceu Yasmine Wilson na finalíssima, com um justo armlock:

A partir do dia 28 de maio, os holofotes estarão virados para Long Beach. No palco da IBJJF, veremos os maiores astros e estrelas da cultuada comunidade do Jiu-Jitsu, que vão disputar pegada a pegada os aplausos do respeitável público.

No feminino, como no masculino, a promessa é de um Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu épico. Afinal, vão passar pelo tapete azul da Pirâmide ao menos dez protagonistas de primeira grandeza, como Gabi Garcia, Leticia Ribeiro, Michelle Nicolini, Mackenzie Dern, Bia Mesquita, Luiza Monteiro, Luanna Alzuguir, Hannette Quadros, Sophia Drysdale e Ana Laura Cordeiro, entre outras notáveis, divididas em oito categorias mais o absoluto.

Como num grandioso festival, o Mundial 2014 será marcado também por uma grande estreia. Não de uma atleta, mas de uma nova categoria, a das magrinhas. Melhor para Melissa Danforth, Marcela Lawton e Shiho Yaginuma, que vão lutar pela glória de se tornar a primeira campeã mundial faixa-preta no peso-galo.

Ausente no ano passado, Leticia Ribeiro está de volta a sua divisão, pluma, buscando seu oitavo (sim, oitavo) título como faixa-preta. Depois de seu desempenho em Abu Dhabi, em abril, a recém-promovida faixa-preta Ariadne Oliveira será o grande obstáculo de Leticia na busca ao título.

Nova atleta do plantel do Legacy, a lutadora Michelle Nicolini disputou e venceu, no ano passado, a divisão meio-pesado. Este ano ela volta ao peso-pena e deve ter Mackenzie Dern como principal oponente. Nadia Melo e Tammi Musumeci, campeã no Pan 2014, embolam a categoria.

O peso leve pode novamente desembocar numa decisão entre as altamente técnicas Bia Mesquita e Luiza Monteiro. Fabiana Borges vai brigar para tirar uma delas da final.

Campeã em 2013, Luanna Alzuguir subiu este ano para o meio-pesado, de modo que a divisão médio em 2014 ficou repleta de aspirantes de respeito. Vice-campeã de 2013, Vanessa Oliveira tem boas chances, mas Janni Larsson, Shanti Abelha e Sophia Drysdale não vão facilitar.

Já o peso meio-pesado tem tudo pra ser “A Divisão” no feminino do Mundial 2014. O enredo é promissor. Luanna Alzuguir quer seu quinto ouro num peso. Hannette Staack busca o título de número oito também. Para aumentar os contornos dramáticos, a invicta Ana Laura Cordeiro retorna após seis anos de afastamento, por conta de uma séria lesão nas costas. Quem leva? Não sabemos.

As moças do pesado estão empolgadas para o Mundial 2014. Pela primeira vez em anos, o nome de Gabi Garcia não figura entre as concorrentes ao topo. Com o advento da novíssima divisão superpesado, a estrela da Alliance teve de sair da categoria que vinha dominando. Assim, a corrida entre Andressa Correa, campeã do ano passado (ao fechar com Gabi), Luzia Fernandes, Fernanda Mazzelli, Tammy Griego e outras ganha em adrenalina.

Finalmente, a divisão superpesado deve servir de aquecimento para Gabi Garcia em sua empreitada por uma terceira medalha de ouro do absoluto. Além da estrela da Alliance, disputam o título Andréa Pereira e a finlandesa Venla Luukkonen.

A estrela da Alliance Luanna Alzuguir está em mais uma final de absoluto faixa-preta, desta vez no Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF, que segue rolando a pleno vapor em Lisboa, Portugal.

Sua oponente será a sueca radicada na Dinamarca Ida Hansson (Checkmat). A final do aberto feminino será neste domingo, 26 de janeiro, no ginásio do Casal Vistoso, na capital do país.

Para chegarem lá, as duas tiveram de suar. Na semifinal, Luanna encarou a faixa-preta sueca Janni Larson, e perdia para a nova revelação até os últimos 30 segundos de luta. A vitória precisou vir com emoção, graças a uma raspagem no finzinho que virou o placar e levou Luanna à final.

Ida Hansson viveu sentimento parecido, e com uma raspagem no último minuto, venceu Vanessa Oliveira.

It is no surprise that both Marcus Buchecha Almeida and Gabi Garcia are leading their respective packs in the IBJJF rankings. The new numbers have been released with added points from their past performances, set for the 2014 season.

The points are earned based on rank, year earned, place, whether it is the weight division or open weight division and which tournament. The most important is the gi World Championship, which will multiply points by seven compared to the Europeans and the Pan Ams which are multiplied by four and so on.

The more prestigious the tournament, the more heavily weighted the points. Also, each year that passes gives a title less importance. Last year, 2013, will mean that a point total is multiplied by three while the same title earned in 2012 will only be multiplied by two. In this way, athletes can make their way to the top while their predecessors can lose their top spots should they not maintain a winning streak throughout the year.

Perhaps one of the most interesting factors is the type of athlete who competes only in the largest tournaments but does well enough to gather a lot of points at one time versus the athlete who chooses to compete in the IBJJF city tournaments throughout the U.S. and even internationally to rack up points every other weekend.

For lighter athletes, their likelihood of entering the open weight division at the main tournaments is rare so their wins, mostly coming from earning gold in their weight division at those tournaments, also come from the smaller tournaments around the country and sometimes even winning the open weights in those as well.

I ended up in second place… Who trains a lot and dedicate all the life for Jiu-Jitsu, never wants to be second, and I always dedicate myself to be first, but when I think that this ranking is about all fighters of all BJJ divisions in all [the] world, I see that this is a very good result, and I’m very happy about it! Thanks everybody who cheer and support me to do my best everyday…”
