American Cup breaks records in California

There was a whole lot of Jiu-Jitsu going on in the United States this weekend. Besides the New York Open (see here), around 850 competitors hit the mats in Silicon Valley, at the third installment of the American Cup. The tournament promoted by Claudio França was the biggest ever in Northern California. Our editor Luca Atalla had his hands full, but didn’t miss a beat from coast to coast in the USA. In California the big standout was our GMA Marcos “Yemaso” Torregrosa (Capital City BJJ), who took the lightweight adult category by storm and was the only one to venture into the absolute. The other lightweight to shine was local Nathan Mendelsohn (Claudio França), winner at weight and runner-up in the brown belt absolute, where he stopped at Elliot Kelly (Cia Paulista), a student of our GMA André Glodzinski.

American Cup divulga chaves e convoca para seminário

A terceira edição da American Cup, evento de um dos faixas-pretas pioneiros na Califórnia, professor Claudio França, promete chacoalhar Los Gatos neste fim de semana.

Antes do campeonato, o faixa-preta convida para o seminário de Alvaro Mansur em San Jose, nesta sexta, dia 30. Uma oportunidade de ouro para entender melhor as regras do Jiu-Jitsu esportivo, útil não apenas para quem quer ser árbitro um dia, mas para atletas, mestres e torcedores.

Árbitro trata atleta com zelo, na foto já clássica de Gustavo Aragão.

“É uma boa chance para os treinadores e para quem quer saber mais sobre o Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, esse esporte que cresce tanto pelo mundo. Muito útil para compreender o sistema de pontos e entender os golpes e imobilizações”, diz Claudio.

Last day for American Cup sign-up discount

The deadline to sign up for the 3^rd American Cup, to take place May 1 and 2 in Los Gatos, California, is April 26. Today, however, is the last day to register for the tournament already counting hundreds of participants and pay less.

American Cup aguarda 300 crianças em sua 3ª edição

As inscrições para a 3ª American Cup chegam à reta final, e na quinta-feira termina o prazo com desconto. Clique aqui para se registrar!

Os nomes de colecionadores de medalhas já começam a brotar no site americancupbjj.com, como Carlos Diego (Amazonas),
Ryan Clark (Megaton), e Carlos Melo, Garth Taylor e Nathan Mendelsohn, os três do time do organizador, Claudio França.

“Os favoritos estão surgindo e nesta semana de reta final aparecem muitos mais. É só ficar de olho no site, pois estamos atualizando duas vezes por dia”, conta Claudio.

“O destaque por enquanto é a presença da criançada – ano passado tivemos mais de 200 na divisão infantil, e este ano a estimativa é de 300 crianças lutando no primeiro dia, o sábado. Vai ser uma grande festa, todo competidor vai ganhar um exemplar de GRACIEMAG, o açaí do Sambazon e o lanche do Silvio’s BBQ vão estar presentes”, resume.

O evento terá cobertura da GRACIEMAG e será precedido por um seminário de regras de mestre Alvaro Mansor, no dia 30 de abril. Confira o cronograma:

3rd American Cup expecting 300 kids

Sign-ups for the 3^rd American Cup are into the final stretch, and this Thursday is the deadline for a discount. Click here to register!

The names of some medal collectors have already started to show up on the americancupbjj.com website, like Carlos Diego (Amazonas BJJ), Ryan Clark (Megaton), Carlos Melo, Garth Taylor and Nathan Mendelsohn, all from the team of event promoter Claudio França.

“The favorites are popping up and this week of the final stretch a lot more will appear. You just have to keep an eye on the site, since we’re updating twice a day,” recounts Claudio. “So far what stands out is the number of kids – last year we had more than 200 in the kids division, and this year we expect 300 will be fighting on the first day, Saturday. It will be a big party; all competitors will be given a copy of GRACIEMAG; Sambazon açaí and Silvio’s BBQ will be there.”

The event will be covered by GRACIEMAG and is to be preceded by a rules seminar led by Alvaro Mansor. Check out the timetable:

American Cup and rules seminar in Los Gatos

On the 1^st and 2^nd of May, Los Gatos High School will receive both little and big competitors alike for the 3^rd American Jiu-Jitsu Cup, in Los Gatos, California.

But the event begins well before, with a rules and refereeing seminar headed by Master Alvaro Mansur in San Jose, at academy of Claudio Franca, organizer of the event.

Los Gatos receives the 3rd American Cup

The city of Los Gatos, California, is a lucky one for those who fight. Thus in 1994, when a limited national soccer team from Brazil, but disciplined and hard-nosed (and with soccer star Romario) stayed there during the World Cup in the USA. Undefeated after seven dramatic battles, Brazil was crowned champion.

In 2010, Los Gatos carries on proving its reputation as a hotbed of aces, with the upcoming American Cup, on May 1 and 2 at Los Gatos High School.

Organized by the creators of the U.S. Open, the masters from Claudio França’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, the 3rd American Cup will be more attractive for being near: the gym is just minutes from San Jose Airport.

On 1 May, the Jiu-Jitsu tournament kicks off with children born between 1995 and 2006 and for the purple belts of all ages and weights. On Sunday, the 2nd, the youth, adult & senior and masters of the other belt groups take the field.
