Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier will potentially be next to fight Jon Jones, UFC president Dana White said over the weekend.

White said that he’s open to the heavyweight fighting at light heavyweight or heavyweight, but a possible showdown between Cormier and the UFC light heavyweight champion could be next up once Jones and Chael Sonnen battle in April.

“He could be next in line to fight Jones,” Whtie said following the UFC 155 post-fight press conference on Saturday. “It’s awesome. He’s going to bring a lot of excitement to the heavyweight or light heavyweight division.”

Cormier is currently scheduled to face Dion Staring at the final Strikeforce event on Jan. 12. Following that match-up, Strikeforce will shut down as a promotion, and Cormier will officially make his transition to the UFC.

Cormier’s teammate, Cain Velasquez, won the UFC heavyweight title from Junior dos Santos on Saturday night. Before the fight, the champ said that a win for him would have his American Kickboxing Academy cohort think about dropping to 205 pounds to avoid fighting each other.

Now that Velasquez holds the title, the door to light heavyweight seems wide open for Cormier, but when asked he wouldn’t confirm if he would walk through it.

“It’s always good to leave … a cliffhanger,” Cormier said following the press conference, urging the UFC president not to tell the media anything else.

Cormier made his name known by entering Strikeforce’s heavyweight tournament as an alternate, earning a first-round knockout of Antonio Silva. He went on to face former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett in finals of the tournament and won a unanimous decision.

Cormier was supposed to face Frank Mir in Strikeforce at a November event, but Mir sustained an injury and the event was ultimately canceled. Reports have indicated that Cormier would like to face Mir once he arrives in the UFC.

Wanderlei Silva and Brian Stann will face each other in the main event at UFC on FUEL TV 8 in Japan, the company announced late Wednesday evening.

The match-up headlines the event, which takes place March 2 at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo.

Although both fighters have fought at middleweight for the last two years, the UFC pits the two one weight class higher at light heavyweight.

Silva (34-12-1) last fought at UFC 147 in a loss to former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin. The bout was a rematch to their catchweight bout at UFC 99 from June 2009. Silva’s last fight at 205 pounds was against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 92, a bout that he lost by first-round knockout.

Stann (12-5), a former WEC light heavyweight champion, is fresh off a unanimous decision loss to Michael Bisping at UFC 152 in September. Stann’s last attempt at light heavyweight was against Phil Davis at UFC 109 in February 2010. Davis topped Stann by unanimous decision in the contest.

UFC officials also confirmed a previous GRACIEMAG.com report that Stefan Struve and Mark Hunt will meet at the event in a heavyweight bout. The contest will be the card’s co-main event.

UFC on FUEL TV 8 will be the UFC’s first trip to Japan since February at UFC 144.

It’s been quite a Thursday for the UFC. With Dan Henderson having partially torn a ligament in his knee during training, supposedly against former UFC fighter Rameau Thierry Sokodjou, Dana White and team rushed to find a replacement to face Jon Jones in the UFC 151 main event this coming September 1 in Las Vegas.

That was when the roof caved in completely. Only Chael Sonnen agreed to face the light heavyweight champion with so little prep time. While he was getting ready to make the big announcement, Dana White found out that Greg Jackson had advised Jones not to face Sonnen on such short notice, and UFC 151 was thus cancelled during a bombastic press conference.

It’s the first time in 11 years that we cancel an event. We have a building where 250 people were working on fixing this card. Only Chael agreed to face Jones. But to everyone’s surprise, Jones didn’t accept it. He won’t be making many fans like that; I can guarantee it,” said an irate Dana White in lament.

“I know some people might not like the fight, made at the last minute. But I know Sonnen would give his maximum to try and be champion. It’s guys like that that I like. It’s guys like that that I respect. It’s guys like him who helped build the sport,” said the promotional president, in a sneer aimed at the champion’s coach, Greg Jackson.

“Greg said it would be a major mistake for Jones to accept a fight with Sonnen at the last minute. I feel the trainer should be interviewed, but by a psychologist. He’s killing our sport,” fired White, adding, “If Jon Jones doesn’t need this fight, congratulations for him. But there are a lot of other fighters on the card who do need it, even just to put food on the table.”

Now Jon Jones will be taking on Lyoto Machida on September 22 at what would have been called UFC 152. “If Jones agrees to, of course,” said an ironic White.
The post With Hendo out, Dana cancels UFC 151 and comes down hard on Jones and Jackson first appeared on Graciemag.

As Grandmaster Helio Gracie would say time and time again, “Can a black belt ignore how to escape a guillotine choke? Can a champion not know basic self-defense?” This line of questioning surfaced again when the all-powerful Jon Jones, the young UFC champion, paid a visit to the New York Police Department.

The dominant owner of the light heavyweight division, historically the most revered (and closely matched) of world MMA, took part in a police training course and made some, shall we say, deadly mistakes when it comes to self-defense for the armed forces and police.

Check out how Jon Jones did in trying his hand at police work, in an entertaining and instructive video released last February.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKj0ZqhaBIQ

Although “Bones” Jones was clearly having a lark, it’s also apparent that the UFC champion doesn’t have much experience when it comes to self-defense. As a professional athlete and model of efficiency in the octagon, do you feel Jon Jones needs to set an example and become better versed in self-defense in the street? Does mixed martial arts need to be complete martial arts, or is it just entertainment?

As the debate plays out, keep in mind two or three Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense tricks for you to not make the same mistakes the UFC champion made. In the first video, at the two-minute mark, there are some ways Jiu-Jitsu helps to disarm an assailant, as taught by black belt Ronaldo Cardoso.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y512dyA7NXk

In the second video, there are some simple and effective techniques for hand-to-hand combat taught by Relson Gracie that he learned from the very source—his father, Helio.

The post UFC in debate: can the “world’s best” be missing self-defense moves? first appeared on Graciemag.
