Alliance’s Leonardo Nogueira has had his 2016 BJJ world championship rescinded after failing a drug test done by the USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency) following his campaign in June of last year.

Leonardo Nogueira, 29, tested positive for clomifene, a drug used for raising one’s testosterone levels. Clomifene is listed among the substances banned by the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) and the USADA.

Nogueira was handed a two-year suspension, starting June 5, when the sample was collected. He will not be allowed to compete in IBJJF contests and will have every result achieved following his test revoked, including the 2016 world title he won over Alexandro Cecconi, who is expected to be declared the rightful champion.

Leonardo Nogueira is the fourth BJJ athlete caught in a drug test since 2013, when the IBJJF started doing such tests. The other three are Gabi Garcia (2013), Bráulio Estima (2014) and Felipe “Preguiça” Pena (2014).

A agência americana antidoping USADA anunciou, nessa segunda-feira 27 de março, que o lutador Leonardo Nogueira, de 29 anos, foi testado positivo por uma substância considerada proibida no último Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF, no ano passado.

Léo, que havia se sagrado tricampeão mundial no peso superpesado, vai pegar dois anos de suspensão dos torneios da Federação Mundial.

O período de dois anos de gancho para o atleta começou em 5 de junho de 2016, data em que sua amostra foi coletada. O faixa-preta foi desqualificado de todos os resultados competitivos, obtidos em eventos da IBJJF, desde o dia 1º de junho, data de início do Mundial, e perde com isso medalhas e premiações conquistadas.

Com esse resultado, o então vice Alexandro Ceconi vai herdar a medalha de ouro de Léo e tornar-se campeão mundial pela primeira vez.

“A USADA anunciou hoje que Leonardo Pires Nogueira, de Dunwoody, Geórgia, faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, testou positivo para uma substância proibida e aceitou uma sanção de dois anos por sua violação de regras antidoping.

Nogueira, de 29 anos, testou positivo para clomifeno como resultado de um teste de drogas em competição realizado em 5 de junho de 2016, na Federação Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu (IBJJF),no Campeonato Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu realizado em Long Beach, Califórnia. Apesar da IBJJF não ser signatária ao Código Mundial Antidoping, a USADA foi contratada pela IBJJF para realizar testes para o evento e coletou a amostra de Nogueira de acordo com o Padrão Internacional de Testes e Investigações da Agência Mundial Antidoping (WADA).

Clomifeno é uma Substância Especificada na Classe de Moduladores Hormonais e Metabólicos na Lista de Proibição da WADA e proibido em todos os momentos pelo Código Mundial de Antidoping e o Protocolo USADA para o Teste de Movimento Olímpico e Paraolímpico, que se aplicou aos campeonatos mundias de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF em 2016.

O período de dois anos de inelegibilidade de Nogueira começou em 5 de junho de 2016, data em que sua amostra foi coletada. Além disso, Nogueira foi desqualificado de todos os resultados competitivos obtidos em competições sancionadas pela IBJJF, ou qualquer signatário do Código, em 1 de junho de 2016, data de início do Campeonato Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF 2016, incluindo a perda de qualquer medalha , Pontos e prêmios.A IBJJF concordou em impor esta sanção.

Em um esforço para ajudar os atletas, bem como todos os membros da equipe de apoio, como pais e treinadores, na compreensão das regras aplicáveis a eles, USADA fornece instruções abrangentes em seu site sobre o processo de teste e substâncias proibidas, como obter permissão para usar uma medicação necessária e os riscos e perigos do uso de suplementos, bem como drogas de reforço de desempenho e recreativas. Além disso, a USADA gerencia uma linha de referência de medicamentos, a Global Drug Reference Online (www.GlobalDRO.com), realiza sessões educacionais com os Órgãos Nacionais e seus atletas e distribui proativamente uma infinidade de materiais educacionais, como a Lista Proibida, Cartões de carteira de referência, boletins periódicos e documentação de referência de protocolo e política.

A USADA é responsável pelo processo de testes e gerenciamento de resultados para atletas no Movimento Olímpico e Paraolímpico dos EUA e dedica-se igualmente à preservação da integridade do esporte através de iniciativas de pesquisa e programas educacionais.”

Na finalíssima, Marcus Buchecha e Leonardo Nogueira ficaram frente a frente na busca do título. O duelo foi truncado, mas a estrela do maior campeão dos mundiais da IBJJF brilhou mais uma vez.

Para o fã do UFC 200, foi um aperitivo. Já para o fã de Jiu-Jitsu, foi um banquete do melhor da arte suave, em pleno Las Vegas Convention Center, sede da UFC Fan Expo.

O torneio IBJJF Pro League GP, realizado neste sábado durante o Campeonato Americano de Jiu-Jitsu, reuniu oito craques da faixa-preta de olho nos 50 mil dólares de premiação.

O campeão, que abiscoitou 40 mil, foi mais uma vez Marcus Vinicius “Buchecha” de Almeida, o tetra mundial absoluto na faixa-preta.

Na final, Marcus Buchecha enfrentou a teia pegajosa da meia-guarda de Léo Nogueira, mas conseguiu, logo no início, ganhar 2 vantagens ao jogar por cima, e ficou com o título.

Léo Nogueira, por sua vez, ficou com a armadilha engatilhada quase até o fim, mas não conseguiu executar a raspagem da meia – que seria a raspagem mais valiosa de sua carreira, pois lhe renderia 40 mil verdinhas. De todo modo, ele atuou bem e ainda ficou com a bela soma de 10 mil dólares.

Antes da final do GP, Marcus Buchecha eliminara João Gabriel Rocha num lutão. Buchecha passou a guarda de João e escorregou para a montada, mas viu o oponente da Soul Fighters virar-se e tirá-lo de cima. João Gabriel foi para cima e bombardeou a meia-guarda de Buchecha até o fim, mas apesar da pressão não conseguiu pontuar, e o placar se manteve: 7 a 0.

Já na primeira luta, Buchecha pegou as costas e finalizou Bruno Bastos.

Do outro lado da chave, Léo Nogueira apertou o pescoço de Alexandro Ceconi pelas costas, e depois eliminou Mahamed Aly nas raspagens, por 4 a 2. Aly vencera Xande Ribeiro por 2 a 0. Outra grande luta foi João Gabriel contra Felipe Preguiça, um 4 a 4 em que João foi melhor e venceu por 5 vantagens.

“Esse GP estava com uma chave digna de absoluto de Mundial”, comentou Buchecha.

The IBJJF held the first ever Atlanta Pro championship this Saturday, April 30.

João Miyao, Otavio Sousa, Vitor Oliveira and Leonardo Nogueira walked away with the biggest prizes in the adult black belt division.

In the featherweight, João Miyao beat Bruno Frazzatto for the title and the $4,000 prize.

The middleweight gold medal went to Otavio Sousa, after an armbar finish on Jaime Canuto.

Vitor Oliveira beat Murilo Santana for the heavyweight title while Leonardo Nogueira beat Mahamed Aly by one advantage for the ultra-heavy gld medal.

In the teams’ competition, results were:

No último sábado, 6 de fevereiro, a IBJJF realizou o Atlanta Open de inverno, na capital do estado da Geórgia, e quem esquentou os tatames foi o campeão mundial Léo Nogueira, da Alliance.

O peso pesado de Fabio Gurgel venceu a categoria e o absoluto em Atlanta. No peso pesado, o mestre nas raspadas de meia-guarda precisou bater Roberto Torralbas, enquanto no absoluto venceu o técnico Osvaldo Moizinho, que ficou com o ouro no peso leve.

No feminino, a faixa-preta Laurah Hallock (GFTeam Ohio) foi o destaque, ao vencer o peso leve e o absoluto.

No peso médio, o professor Vitor Henrique Oliveira, também da GFTeam Ohio, garantiu mais um ouro para a coleção.

Leo Nogueira

The IBJJF held this Saturday the 2016 Atlanta Winter Open.

Alliance’s Leonardo Nogueira was the standout in the adult male black belt with double gold in the heavyweight and the open class divisions.

Leo beat Roberto Torralbas in his weight class and then beat Osvaldo Moizinho in the absolute.

In the female black belt, Laurah Hallock also won double gold in the lightweight and open class.

She beat Rachel Morrison for the weight class gold medal and then Caitilin Huggins in the absolute.

Marcus Buchecha

Marcus Almeida Buchecha had a bad performance at the 2011 Worlds, his first one as a black belt.

He lost the superheavy division final to Leonardo Nogueira and was caught on an armlock by Rodolfo Vieira in the open class semifinal.

The setbacks were so damaging to his mindset that he even thought of stopping competing altogether, as he told GRACIEMAG in an exclusive interview for GM #208.

Then came the 2011 Worlds No-Gi and Buchecha decided to jump in to see if he still had what it took to be a high level competitor.

The result could not be better, as he won the superheavy division against the same Leo Nogueira and closed out the open class with teammate João Assis.

The flame was back on and Buchecha went on to win three black belt open class titles, among many other gold medals.

Leandro Lo vs. Leo Nogueira at the 2015 Pan

Leandro Lo stopped by the GRACIEMAG booth at the end of the fourth day of the 2015 Pan, on Sunday, March 15. When asked to autograph a copy of GRACIEMAG #202, featuring his loose game, he said, honestly: “Why do you want my autograph today, when I lost so badly?!” To which he got the answer: “Are you crazy? You lost only the last match against a guy much heavier than you and two times world champion! You did great!”

That’s Leandro Lo. He seems to never have enough confidence in his own skills, but what he does on the mat could not contradict more what he says. Once again at the 2015 Pan, he was the nightmare of his opponents, including Yuri Simões, Leo Nogueira, Otavio Sousa. Victor Estima, James Puopolo, and others.

For a middleweight, his results compare only to another legend, Marcelo Garcia. Here’s what he said to GRACIEMAG’s Marcelo Dunlop about his overall performance in Irvine: “In the end, I was glad. I had only tough fights and did not get tired. In my weight division, it was another war against Victor Estima and Otavio Sousa. It’s always tricky to fight them. The final against Otavio was a good one and I managed to pass his guard when he opened up to try to sweep me and tie the score. Otavio has one of the most dangerous guards in the game.”

The only thing Lo couldn’t do in Irvine was to defeat Bernardo Faria in the open class final, having to settle for the silver medal for the second year in a row. Here’s how Lo saw the final match: “Bernardo is very strong and you can’t allow him to get in the position he wants. I tried to surprise him with a triangle, but he ended in that over and under pass that he does so well and I couldn’t recover my guard. Nevertheless, I love big challenges and fighting tough, heavier guys is what keeps me going. I want to fight tough guys always and test my game. I have three gold medals at the Worlds and I want another three or four. It’s gonna be tough, but that’s what I want.”

In 2012 he was 10 seconds away from writing his name in the most honorable list of Jiu-Jitsu competitors – the black belt open class world champions. A takedown by Marcus Buchecha took away Leonardo Nogueira’s chance of making it to the ultimate top of the ladder.

Even so, the two gold medals in his weight division, in 2011 and 2012, granted him a well-respected place among the elite of the sport. As time went on, tough, Nogueira seemed off and unable to repeat the performances of the past. In 2013 and 2014, results were not quite the same and his name sort of vanished from podiums at the most prestigious events.

The struggles in the near past made Leo Nogeuria a doubt at the 2015 Pan, but what many didn’t know was that the reasons that made him perform under the level he was used to were not there anymore, as he tell us in this exclusive interview.

“It happened with me what happens to many black belts that decide to focus on a career as a teacher. I moved to Miami, Florida, to teach and had a class full of beginners, which left me without a proper training partner. My daily routine would consist of teaching four classes a day and doing my physical training. That’s simply not enough to maintain a high performance. The best training I had was at Roberto Cyborg’s academy, but I could only go there once or twice a week.”

Frustrated with the bad results, Nogueira decided to change his life and his setting. Last February, he packed and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to train and teach at Alliance headquarters, with Master Romero Jacaré. Even with less than a month of the new routine, the improvement was clear.

“My training in atlanta already improved my game. I feel that I’m back to the elite. I’m able to go against all the high level guys at an even condition. I want to go back to my peak condition, when I was able to defeat guys like Xande Ribeiro, Marcus Buchecha, Antônio Braga Neto and others.”

But what were the actual changes Leo made in his training routine to have such a better performance?

“Now I’m training hard every day. It’s much more convenient to train and teach at the same place and have a Master like Jacaré to give you notes on what you are doing wrong. It’s just like when I was in São Paulo and Fabio Gurgel would not give me room to breath. I can honestly say I’m training more than ever!”

With thatm Leo’s horizons have broaded once again and the sky is indeed the limit.

“I’m back and I want to fight for my spot at the top once again. I’m young  and I still have a lot to evolve. My career is not over yet!”
