Three-time world champion Celso Venícius had gone since the 2010 installment of the event without competing and only managed to get two week’s of intense training in for this year’s World Pro. Once in Abu Dhabi, the Roberto Gordo black belt beat some of the trickier opponents in the under-74 kg division, stopping only at Leandro “Lo” Pereira in the final. In the following interview the teacher at Ryan Gracie academy confirmed he will be at this year’s Worlds, which may mark his competition farewell.

We spoke before the World Pro and you said you were hardly able to train for the event. So was second-place a good result for you then?

It’s always nice to win. I lost in the final but do feel I did have a good run up till then. I faced a bunch of really stalwart opponents and managed to beat them. Considering how little I trained, I feel I did well. I had four really tough matches on the first day, and having only trained for two weeks, I exceeded my expectations. But regardless of the physical form I’m in, I always fight to be champion.

So what do you think happened in the final against Leandro?

I already knew Leandro from around here in São Paulo because he’s faced a number of my students. I’ve had my eye on him for some time. I already knew he was tough, and he had an excellent campaign. What’s there to say? He eliminated favorites like Michael Langhi. I feel I fought poorly against him, didn’t perform at full capacity. I beat two opponents I really wanted to beat (Gilbert Durinho and Rubens Cobrinha) on the first day, so perhaps that threw me off focus, seeing as I was so pleased with myself. Then, Leandro was better and beat me; he’s to be congratulated, props to him.

Who to you were the main standouts in Abu Dhabi?

Tanquinho kicked butt in the under-65-kg class. Atos brought its best guys and he beat them one by one; it was impressive. Lagarto was on fire too – he’s been around a long time and even beat cancer. He’s a great friend and it was really touching to see him; I was really pleased. But the big standout was Rodolfo Vieira; he’s a beast and plowed through everyone in his way. I feel those three plus Leandro were the standouts.

You’ve also told GRACIEMAG.com in the past that the 2011 Worlds will likely be your competition farewell. Is that still the case?

Count me in at the Worlds. I’d previously said I’d fight this Worlds and then rethink my career. Winning a tournament or two won’t change my situation as a teacher at all, I’ll always go back to that. But I’ll be at the Worlds; I’m going to put in some intense training for it. I want a win at this championship to wrap up with crowning glory.

In capturing his gold medal at the World Pro in Abu Dhabi, Leandro “Lo” Pereira had to make it past some of the biggest names in world Jiu-Jitsu. The lightweight divisional decider against three-time world champion Celso Venícius GRACIEMAG.com readers have already seen. Prior to that, though, Lo had to put an end to Michael Langhi’s three-year unbeaten streak.

Para garantir o ouro em Abu Dhabi, no World Pro, Leandro Pereira “Lo” precisou bater alguns dos principais nomes do Jiu-Jitsu mundial. A decisão contra o tricampeão mundial Celsinho Venícius os leitores já assistiram aqui no GRACIEMAG.com. No entanto, nas semifinais, Lo passou por Michael Langhi, o que quebrou quase três anos de invencibilidade do oponente.

Accustomed to winning, Michael Langhi has long been a standout as a Jiu-Jitsu competitor in the lightweight division, one of the most heavily disputed weight classes in the gentle art these days. In recent years the black belt won all the main events, among them the Worlds, Pan and European Open. Without a blemish on his record in years, earning him the post of GRACIEMAG magazine’s most consistent athlete, Langhi ended up dropping a match to Leandro “Lo” Pereira, who then went on to win the under-74 kg division, at the World Pro. In the following conversation with GRACIEMAG.com, the Alliance ace comments on losing for the first time in so long, heaps praise on Leandro, criticizes the posture of some companions, and points out the biggest standouts in Abu Dhabi:

How did it feel to lose?

I was of course saddened by it. I hadn’t lost in practically three years and was pretty bummed. But it comes with the sport, it’s something everyone is subject to. Two go in, and one leaves the loser. Unfortunately, I was the loser this time.

Where do you think you went wrong? Did you learn anything from it?

I have no excuse. I could have done what a lot of others do and made up a bunch of things. The truth is that my opponent (Leandro Lo) was better than me and had an excellent championship. One needs to have the posture of a champion off the mat. There are those who only have it in victory, but in defeat they don’t know how to deal and assume attitudes that aren’t those of a true champion. The lesson I derived from all this is that sooner or later the house comes down, and it comes down for everybody. Like I said, if you are someone who besides being good at Jiu-Jitsu has a good attitude, you receive praise even in defeat. But if you let things go to your head, when the house comes down it’s an even greater shock. I don’t hide, and I compete everywhere I can. I’d rather lose than not fight. The sting of defeat is something I can live with, but the shame of not fighting and being afraid. . . That was something else that was kind of strange over there, since so many didn’t fighter, but I can’t judge anyone.

What did you think of Leandro?

He’s a humble kid who already has the posture of a champion, he doesn’t talk evil of anyone. I already knew of his potential, because I kept up with his career here in São Paulo.

Was there anyone in particular who impressed you at the World Pro?

A number of fighters impressed me. One of them was Rodolfo Vieira, with whom I’ve had the opportunity of facing in the absolute quarterfinals. He really is something else, with Jiu-Jitsu all his own. He always goes for it and seeks the submission. I had the pleasure of facing him. I can’t leave out Augusto Tanquinho either – he had an excellent campaign. He had a really good strategy and Jiu-Jitsu; he put the stops on everyone. But a lot of others like Leandro and Lucio Lagarto did really well. The championship had a lot of great surprises.

When will you next see action?

I’m going to focus on the Brazilian Nationals and the Worlds. Those are the next CBJJ and IBJJF events, and I’m in. I’m already training even more, I’m more dedicated now so I can make my comeback. God willing, I’ll go have a good championship.

Acostumado com as vitórias, Michael Langhi vem se destacando como o principal lutador na categoria de leves, umas das mais disputadas na arte suave. Nos últimos anos, o faixa-preta venceu os principais eventos, entre eles o Mundial, Pan e Europeu. Sem perder há bastante tempo, o que valeu o posto de atleta mais consistente pela revista GRACIEMAG, Langhi acabou superado nas disputas do World Pro por Leandro “Lo” Pereira, que se sagrou campeão na categoria 74kg. Num bate-papo com o GRACIEMAG.com, a fera da Alliance comenta sobre finalmente perder, elogia Leandrinho, critica a postura de alguns companheiros e aponta os grandes destaques em Abu Dhabi.

Confira:

Como foi a sensação de perder?

Lógico que fiquei triste. Não perdia há praticamente três anos e fiquei um pouco chateado. Mas acho que faz parte do esporte, uma coisa que todos estão sujeitos. Entram dois e um sai com a derrota. Infelizmente perdi dessa vez.

Cedo ou tarde, um dia a casa cai” Langhi.

Em que acha que errou? Tirou alguma lição disso?

Não tem desculpas. Poderia fazer como muitos e inventar dez coisas diferentes. Na verdade meu adversário (Leandro Lo) foi melhor e fez um campeonato excelente. É preciso ter postura de campeão fora do tatame. Há quem tem essa postura só na vitória, mas na derrota não sabe lidar e tem atitudes que não condizem com a de um campeão de verdade. A lição que tirei disso é que, cedo ou tarde, um dia a casa cai, e cai para todo mundo. Como falei, se você é um cara que, além do Jiu-Jitsu, tem boas atitudes, você perde e ainda recebe elogios. Mas se você deixa as coisas subirem a cabeça, quando a casa cai o tombo é maior. Não me escondo e luto tudo o que eu posso. Prefiro perder e lutar. A dor da derrota é uma coisa que dá para conviver, mas a vergonha de não lutar e ter medo… Isso ficou meio estranho também lá, já que muitos não lutaram, mas não posso julgar ninguém.

O que acha do Lenadro?

É um moleque humilde, que já tem Jiu-Jitsu e postura de campeão, um cara que não fala mal de ninguém. Já sabia do potencial dele, porque o acompanhava aqui em São Paulo.

Alguém te impressionou no World Pro?

Vários lutadores me impressionaram. Um deles foi o Rodolfo Vieira, com quem tive a oportunidade de lutar nas quartas-de-final do absoluto. Ele é realmente diferenciado, com um Jiu-Jitsu diferente. Ele sempre joga para a frente e busca a finalização. Tive o prazer de lutar com ele. Também não posso deixar de comentar do Augusto Tanquinho, que fez um campeonato excelente. Teve uma estratégia e um Jiu-Jitsu muito bom, anulou todo mundo. Mas muitos outros como o Leandrinho e o Lucio Lagarto lutaram muito bem. Foi um campeonato com ótimas surpresas.

Quando estará em ação agora?

Vou focar no Brasileiro e no Mundial. São os próximos eventos da CBJJ e IBJJF e estarei dentro. Já estou treinando mais ainda, estou mais dedicado para dar a volta por cima. Se Deus quiser chego lá e faço um bom campeonato.

GRACIEMAG.com was already keen to Leandro “Lo” Pereira. The fighter had been having a fine run in competitions around the São Paulo area and put in a splendid performance at the World Pro qualifiers in Gramado, Brazil, where he won a berth in Abu Dhabi.

In the Arab Emirates, Leandro proved once again that he has come to make his mark. The black belt won the under-74 kg division that included such Jiu-Jitsu greats as Michael Langhi, Gilbert Durinho, JP Torres, and his opponent in the final, three-time world champion Celso Venícius, among others.

There’s no denying it, though – among so many beasts of the grappling game, Leandro was still unknown to the general public. His teacher, Cícero Costha, reveals a bit about his student:

“He lives in East São Paulo and endures a one-and-a-half-hour commute every day to train with us here in Ipiranga. He’s a model of dedication,” he says.

“Leandro is truly dedicated, he trains twice a day,” he adds.

The black belt is the product of a project headed by Cícero.

“We have a charity project that helps underprivileged people. Besides Leandro, we have a number of other athletes who have been standing out. If you’d like to come see the project, you are more than welcome,” he said in finishing, proud of his student’s achievement.

GRACIEMAG.com já estava de olho em Leandro “Lo” Pereira. O lutador vinha conseguindo bons resultados nas competições em São Paulo e fez bonito na seletiva do World Pro em Gramado, quando conseguiu a vaga para lutar em Abu Dhabi.

Nos Emirados Árabes, Leandro provou mais umas vez que chegou para fazer barulho. O faixa-preta venceu no peso 74kg, que contava com alguns dos grandes campeões do Jiu-Jitsu mundial, feras como Michael Langhi, Gilbert Durinho, JT Torres e o adversário da final, o tricampeão mundial Celsinho Venícius, entre outros.

Entretanto, não há como negar, no meio de tantas feras Leandrinho ainda era um desconhecido pela maior parte do público. Seu professor, Cícero Costha, conta um pouco sobre o pupilo.

“Ele é morador de Zona Leste aqui em São Paulo e enfrenta pelo menos uma hora e meia de ônibus todos os dias para treinar com a gente aqui em Ipiranga, um exemplo de dedicação”, conta.

“Leandro é muito dedicado mesmo, treina em dois períodos diários”, completa.

O faixa-preta é fruto de uma ação comandada por Cícero.

“Temos um projeto social que ajuda várias pessoas sem condições financeiras. Além do Leandro, temos outros atletas que estão se destacando. Quando vocês quiserem vir conhecer nosso projeto, estão convidados”, encerra, orgulhoso com o resultado do aluno.

Now there are two more great bouts – between Claudio Calasans and Vinicius Corrales, at 83 kg, and the under-74 kg decider, between Leandro Pereira and Celsinho Venícius.

Michael Langhi não está acostumado a perder. Talvez seja por isso que, após o revés para Leandro Nascimento Pereira, o faixa-preta da Alliance tenha se sentado no chão, à beira da área de luta, e, no mais absoluto desalento, direcionado o olhar choroso para lugar nenhum.

A reportagem do GRACIEMAG.com esperou por um momento mais apropriado para abordar o lutador, o que aconteceu já fora da arena, no ponto onde os lutadores aguardavam pelo ônibus para voltar ao hotel. Langhi desabafou:

“Faz cerca de três anos que não perco… É difícil, já chorei um bocado e acho que hoje não vou dormir. Mas é do esporte, tenho que elogiar a atuação do Leandro. Eu dei o meu máximo hoje, porém o meu máximo não foi o suficiente…”.

Minutos depois, já no restaurante do hotel, Langhi avistou Leandro jantando numa mesa com os amigos e lá foi dar os parabéns. Ser campeão, sem dúvida, tem a ver com elegância. Leandro parecia bastante feliz: “Cheguei a sonhar na noite passada que ia lutar contra o Langhi, eu estava com medo do que poderia acontecer num combate como este”.

O que aconteceu foi um duelo bastante equilibrado, Leandro levou a melhor com uma pegada de costas: 4 a 0 no placar. Agora o vencedor enfrenta na final até 74kg Celsinho Venícius, que, do outro lado da chave, derrotou Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” (decisão do árbitro, após empate nos pontos e nas vantagens); e Gilbert Durinho (luta muito emocionante, decidida nos últimos instantes, quando Celsinho abriu uma vantagem a mais no placar, que marcava 2 a 2 em pontos).

Assim como Leandro Nascimento, Augusto Tanquinho foi outro destaque desta quinta-feira. Ele enfrentou o exército da Atos na categoria até 65kg. Venceu Aryzinho (4 a 2 em pontos), Gui Mendes (2 vantagens a mais, após 4 a 4 em pontos) e Eduardo Ramos (2 a 1 em vantagens). Agora, na decisão da categoria, Tanquinho vai enfrentar outro craque da academia rival: Rafa Mendes. Este venceu, do outro lado da chave, Marcelino de Freitas, Gustavo Falciroli e Bruno Malfacine.

Lucio Lagarto não teve vida fácil na categoria acima de 92kg. Caiu logo de cara contra o astro Xande Ribeiro. “Eu ando treinando muitos detalhes com o Roger lá na Inglaterra, meu jogo ganhou muito em sofisticação nos últimos anos”, disse o réptil da Gracie Barra, após o combate. Talvez tenham sido esses detalhes que o ajudaram a derrotar Xande por 3 a 2 nas vantagens. Depois disso Lagarto derrotou (também por vantagens) José Junior (que o havia derrotado na versão sem kimono do World Pro).

Do outro lado da chave, Marcus Bochecha superou Braga Neto com uma chave de pé. Depois venceu por uma vantagem Caio Alencar (que havia passado por Rodrigo Cavaca). A decisão entre Lagarto e Bochecha promete!

Na categoria até 92kg, a sensação do momento Rodolfo Vieira vai enfrentar o sempre perigoso Bruno Bastos na final. Quem esperava por uma reedição da final do Pan 2011 entre Bernardo Faria e Rodolfo Vieira vai ter que esperar por uma outra oportunidade (talvez no absoluto…). No peso, Bernardo deu três tapinhas para Antônio Carlos Jr., o “Cara de Sapato”, numa das finalizações mais bonitas desta quinta-feira (um ataque duplo, triângulo com armlock). Bê bateu com o arrocho no braço.

Bruno Bastos, por sua vez, mandou muito bem derrotando Rafael Lovato, dono de técnica refinada, na semifinal da categoria até 92kg.

Já na categoria 83kg, a decisão vai ser entre Calasans (grande nome da edição do ano passado do Wolrd Pro) e Vinicius Corrales.

Para chegar à final, Vinicius Corrales derrotou Rominho Barral por 6 a 4. Já Calasans superou Alan FinFou por 3 vantagens (2 a 2 em pontos).

GRACIEMAG.com has already addressed the Pan lightweight division (read again here), a weight group shaping up to be truly solid, with some of the style’s main athletes. Now one of these beasts, Leandro Pereira, has already taken front and center, at the World Pro tryouts in Gramado.

“I had five fights and all of them were tough. I can point out the one with the brown belt, José Carlos, in particular: it was plenty lively, but he happened to cross his leg over and get disqualified. The final against Moacir Mendes was rough too. I’d already faced him before and I managed to win by four advantage points,” says the black belt.

Now here comes the Pan, and the big names from the division had better watch out.

“I’m going to have to use some strength and we’ll see what happens. But, for sure, I’ll give folks in the division a hard time. I’m training really well with Cícero Costha and I’m going out there to put up a fight,” he warns.
