The full potential for speed and pressure of BJJ was illustrated in Nevada last week with the hosting of the Las Vegas No-Gi Open.

Among the strong fighters duking it out in the adults’ black-belt finals, Arnaldo Maidana turned some heads. The Checkmat member took down the super-heavyweight division by beating Daniel Hampton in just a few seconds.

After they studied each other on their feet for a bit, Arnaldo attacked with a precise guillotine. Daniel struggled to get free, but after he got on the ground, there was nothing else available to him but the tap-out. His lights even went out for a moment there, but he was checked on immediately and was fine.

Toda velocidade e pressão dos duelos de Jiu-JItsu sem pano foram demonstradas em Nevada, na última semana, com a realização do Las Vegas Open Sem Kimono.

Entre as feras que entraram em ação nas finais do adulto faixa-preta, um destaque ficou para o desempeho de Arnaldo Maidana. Fera da equipe Checkmat, Arnaldo brilhou na final do super pesado ao desafiar Daniel Hampton, e o duelo terminou em poucos segundos.

Depois de se estudarem um pouco em pé, Arnaldo deu um bote preciso a guilhotina. Daniel brigou e tentou se desvencilhar, mas ao chegar ao solo apenas restou os três tapinhas. Daniel chegou até a apagar momentaneamente, mas foi amparado logo ao bater e ficou bem.

Em ação no peso-pena faixa-preta do  Las Vegas Summer  Open da IBJJF, realizado na última semana em paralelo ao Mundial Master, Kennedy Maciel escalou sua chave até a finalíssima da categoria.

Do outro lado do tatame, Jonathan Van Buren aguardava o promissor filho de Rubens Cobrinha  para definirem o campeão do dia. Kennedy atuou bem, raspou duas vezes e, por cima, impôs  o seu ritmo para avançar até a finalização.

Com movimentação rápida, Kennedy chegou na posição lateral e seguiu até o norte-sul. De lá, fez uma pegada  similar à kimura e passou o pé por cima da cabeça do adversário,  para atacar no armlock vencedor.

Marcio André, 22, continues on in his season-long bid to win gold at the 2017 Jiu-Jitsu World Championship. To get there in top shape, the Nova União fighter has been fighting a few of the open tournaments organized by the IBJJF this year, like the Las Vegas one, which ended last weekend in Nevada.

Fighting in the lightweight division, Marcio won two matches to secure the gold. First the submitted Marcus Cole (Grappling Unlimited) via triangle just ten seconds in. Then he swept and passed the guard of Rodrigo Freitas (Rodrigo Freitas) in the final.

“To me, it was a good championship,” he told Graciemag afterwards. “I didn’t yield any points or advantages throughout the competition. I fought aggressively the whole time, and I’m happy about that. Now I’m happy to be competing more. I used basic moves like, for example, the triangle during my first fight. I pulled and did the triangle to finish. That move is a drill I’ve been doing since I was a kid.”

Marcio went on to analyze the final against Rodrigo Freitas. “He is a very tough opponent,” he said. “It is the third time I’ve fought him. I was able to impose my guard pass and use my sweep with the lapel to win, thank God. I can barely wait to fight again. This is my life — I really was born to fight.”

Despite fighting amongst the lightweights at the Euro, the Pan and the recent opens — Marcio also won gold at the N.Y. Open last month, — the Fabio Andrade pupil says he will compete in the 2017 World Championship in the featherweight division, which is his usual division since his juvenile days and where he won world championships as a blue-, purple- and brown-belt.

“I already have my nutrition balanced, and I’m almost at the ideal weight for the featherweight division,” he said. “Last year I came close to the gold, and it eluded me in the final minutes, by one advantage. That loss in the final left me much stronger than I imagined, and now I am more mature. I’m happy for everything that has been going on in my life. The chief goal is the Worlds; I want to write a new chapter in my career with the world title at the black belt.”

A focused Hulk at the Las Vegas Open. IBJJF.

Lucas Barbosa was the big winner of the Las Vegas Open, which ended last weekend. The Atos fighter dominated the medium heavyweight and open divisions, winning five bouts with four submissions.

His open-division final was against Yan Lucas of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu. “I knew Yan was a tough athlete, and I won on advantages,” Barbosa told Graciemag. “I put my takedown game into practice and almost managed to finish the fight at certain points, but he defended well against my choke attempt — he’s tough. Yan was a world champion in the brown belt, and he has beaten tough athletes like Mahamed Aly. But I was able to apply my game, I had good moments in the fight, and I walked away with the win.

“I arrived from Abu Dhabi last week and was still feeling a little jet-lagged, and I had trained only a few times — I think twice — before the championship. I was thinking about not fighting in the Open, but André Galvão talked to me, motivated me, and I went to fight. I felt good during the competition, and now I’m adjusting to the time zone.”

A two-time no-gi world champion, Barbosa aims to finally win the gi title this year. “Every championship I fight in is a warm-up to the Worlds and the big championships,” he said. “It’s always good to fight in the IBJJF’s opens, because, as well as winning some good points for the ranking, there’s a good level, and you get to prepare for the bigger tournaments. I think I was lacking experience to win the Worlds. I only have a year and a half as a black-belt, and each day, with each championship, I’m learning more. I’m also training a lot with the Atos people, and my teacher has been helping me a lot. It’s necessary to have calm, really, and to train hard. I’m feeling good, and I think this Worlds will be different.”

“Eu sabia que o Yan era um atleta duro e venci nas vantagens. Coloquei meu jogo de quedas em prática e quase consegui finalizar, mas ele se defendeu bem a tentativa de estrangulamento, ele é duro. Yan foi campeão mundial na faixa-marrom e já venceu atletas duros como, por exemplo, o Mahamed Aly, que a diferença de peso e tamanho são diferentes. Mas consegui aplicar meu jogo, tive momentos bons na luta e saí com a vitória”, diz Lucas, antes de opinar sobre sua campanha na competição da IBJJF.

“Eu cheguei de Abu Dhabi semana passada e ainda estava sentindo um pouco o fuso horário e treinei poucas vezes, acho que foram duas vezes antes do campeonato. Estava pensando em não lutar o Las Vegas, mas o André Galvão conversou comigo, me motivou e eu fui lutar. Ainda estava sentindo um pouco do jet lag, porém deu tudo certo no campeonato. Senti-me bem durante a competição e agora estou ajeitando o fuso horário”.

Bicampeão mundial sem kimono pela IBJJF na faixa-preta, Lucas almeja conquistar, enfim, o título mundial com kimono este ano, em junho, na Califórnia.

“Todos campeonatos que luto é uma prévia do Mundial e dos campeonatos grandes. Eu luto para ver meu desempenho e corrigir meus erros. É sempre bom lutar os Opens da IBJJF pois, além de ganhar pontos para o ranking, tem um bom nível e dá para se preparar bem para os torneios maiores. Acho que faltava mais experiência para vencer o Mundial. Eu tenho somente um ano e meio de faixa-preta e a cada dia, a cada campeonato, estou aprendendo mais. Também estou treinando bastante com a galera da Atos e meu professor tem me ajudando muito. É preciso ter calma mesmo e treinar duro. Estou me sentido bem e acho que este Mundial vai ser diferente”, conclui o campeão.

Um deles foi Jaime Canuto, faixa-preta da equipe GFTeam, que disputou a divisão de médios, e na final encarou Tiago Rocha, da Alliance.

Em um duelo movimentado, Jaime chamou na guarda, trabalhou e conseguiu finalizar no braço. Confira o movimento e o golpe que valeu ouro para Jaime Canuto no vídeo abaixo!

O Las Vegas Open, realizado no último final de semana, teve na final peso-pena o professor da AoJ contra o craque Samir Chantre (Ares JJ).

O duelo foi técnico, com muita atenção nos detalhes. Mas no fim Rafael levou a melhor, ao conseguir chegar nas costas e finalizar no fim do duelo, com um armlock.

A comunidade do Jiu-Jitsu voltou a se reunir em Nevada, nesse sábado 7 de maio, para mais um Las Vegas Open, evento organizado pela IBJJF.

Com centenas de competidores, o Las Vegas Open de 2016 consagrou, nos tatames armados no Las Vegas Sports Center, os faixas-pretas Gustavo Dias e Sarah Black, os reis absolutos da terra dos cassinos.

O paranaense, faixa-preta formado pelo ex-lutador do UFC Cristiano Marcello, faturou dois ouros em Vegas. No peso pesadíssimo, Gustavo precisou vencer Carlos Farias. Na final do absoluto, o lutador da Gracie Humaitá superou a pedreira Jaime Canuto, da GFTeam.

Sarah Black (academia Gustavo Dantas) mostrou que não há nada como um absoluto depois do peso. Se na divisão leve ela perdeu para Tammi Musumeci, no aberto ela venceu Leanna Dittrich na final.

Sarah Black venceu mais um absoluto no Jiu-Jitsu.

Quem também atraiu aplausos foi o pentacampeão mundial peso-pena Rafael Mendes. Ele venceu Samir Chantre na final, e mostrou estar na ponta dos cascos para o Mundial 2016, que começa em junho.

The Jiu-Jitsu community gathered once again this Saturday in the Sin City for the 2016 Las vegas International Open.

Hundreds of athletes put on a great show at the Las Vegas Sports Center for a full day devoted to the gentle art.

Gustavo Dias Elias and Sarah Black were the standouts in the adult black belt division after they won the open class.

Gustavo had a double gold campaign with his win in the ultraheavy division as well.

He beat Carlos Farias in his weight divsion and then defeated Jaime Canuto in the absolute final.

Sarah came back from a defeat to Tammi Musumeci in the lightweight division final to beat Leanna Dittrich in the open class.

Another highlight of the day was the presence of five-time black belt featherweight world champion Rafael Mendes.

He beat Samir Chantre in the final for the title in another pre-2016 Worlds appearance as he prepares to compete for his sixth world title.

In the teams’ competition, results were:

João Miyao, campeão do aberto, precisou duelar com Kim Terra (CTA) na semifinal.

Depois de diversos giros e uso da guarda lapela pelos faixas-pretas, Miyao foi vencedor.
