O UFC 160, marcado para maio, vai tomando forma e promete ser eletrizante. Além dos dois confrontos estelares no peso pesado – Cain Velasquez vs Antonio Pezão e Junior Cigano vs Alistar Overeem – o Ultimate anunciou o duelo entre Glover Teixeira e Ryan Bader.

O brasileiro de jogo completo e perigoso vem chamando a atenção desde que chegou ao octagon, com três vitórias incontestáveis sobre Kyle Kingsbury, Fabio Maldonado e Quinton”Rampage” Jackson.

Já Bader, revelado no “TUF 8”, tem um cartel de 15 vitórias em 18 lutas e já bateu Vinny Magalhães, Rogério Minotouro, Keith Jardine, Rampage e, em sua última luta, Vladimir Matyushenko.

Ryan Bader perdeu, em agosto, para um dos principais parceiros de treinos de Glover, Lyoto Machida, que luta neste sábado com Dan Henderson. A embolada categoria até 93kg conta ainda com Alexander Gustafsson, bem na fita para enfrentar o campeão Jon Jones.

Does anyone doubt that this Saturday night in Las Vegas has all the makings of a big-time Jiu-Jitsu affair? And that’s starting with the very first fight on the preliminary card, when Glover Teixeira makes his UFC debut. However discreet his entrance into the promotion, Glover is riding a 15-fight winning streak. And though he may be known for his knockouts, Kyle Kingsbury’s opponent holds a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

Glover first caught the grappling gang’s attention with his performance at the 2009 tryouts for the ADCC. Previously an unknown entity at submission-fighting tournaments in Brazil, he overcame opponents with more experience than him and qualified for the main event in Barcelona without dropping so much as a point.

Alguém tem dúvida de que a noite deste sábado, em Las Vegas, pode ser de muito Jiu-Jitsu? E isso a contar desde a primeira luta do card preliminar, com a estreia de Glover Teixeira no UFC. Ainda discreto na organização, Glover vem numa série de 15 triunfos. Apesar de ser conhecido pelos nocautes, o adversário de Kyle Kingsbury logo mais é faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu. A luta só será transmitida pelo Canal Combate, ao vivo.

Glover impressionou a todos durante a seletiva de 2009 para o ADCC. Desconhecido nas competições de chão aqui no Brasil, bateu adversários mais experientes e se classificou para o evento, em Barcelona, sem sofrer um ponto sequer.

UFC 146 is going down this Saturday in Las Vegas, and there’s no shortage of expectations surrounding what’s about to transpire there. In the main event of the evening, heavyweight title-holding knockout artist Junior Cigano has a high-caliber Jiu-Jitsu specialist in Frank Mir challenging him for his strap.

With his crisp boxing, to nine out of ten experts the current champ is the odds-on favorite to keep his title—the GRACIEMAG.com team too is convinced another “Cigano” win is imminent.

The opinion is shared by Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, who has the utmost confidence in his friend and boxing coach Luiz Dórea, and his money is on a knockout from the reigning title holder.

“Cigano is a monster of an athlete, and he began his career in Jiu-Jitsu. Rodrigo Artilheiro was with me at the TUF Brazil house, and he mentioned how crazy his endurance is. He’s 28 years old, started at 22—he hasn’t been in MMA long but has already shown what he’s made of. I don’t think this one leaves the first round—Cigano drops him. But even if it does go longer, Cigano is in much better physical shape than Frank Mir,” opined Durinho, echoing statements made by Mir, to whom the longer the fight goes, the better.

If you were in Frank Mir’s place, what would you do? What would you do against a fighter with heavy hands and pinpoint accuracy?

“If I were Mir, I’d try to take him to the ground. I’d try to clinch, get the takedown. I’d try to be Rousimar “Toquinho” in there; I’d attack his heel, and always stay clear of Cigano’s hands. To beat a monster like that, you have to frenetically work at taking it to the ground. I’d work on improving my footwork, get good at faking punches and try capitalizing from the clinch. Training would have to be like this: getting the takedown, working on wrestling and going for the foot when on the ground,” said Gilbert in analysis.

The TUF Brazil participant doesn’t, however, feel Mir will be successful in his mission.

“I expect a first-round knockout from the Brazilian. Cigano’s punching is really crisp, he’s healthier for being younger, he has the confidence from being champion and he does an excellent job. All Cigano has to do is be calm and fight,” wagered the 2011 Jiu-Jitsu lightweight champion of the world.

“I think Frank Mir is going to mess up after the first punch lands. Being the champion, in my opinion Cigano doesn’t even need to press the action; he can just be calm, do his footwork and jab, because the knockout will surface,” said the black belt training partner of Vitor Belfort in closing.

O UFC 146 que rola neste sábado, em Las Vegas, vem cheio de expectativas. No combate principal da noite, o campeão dos pesados e nocauteador Junior Cigano encara o desafiante bom de Jiu-Jitsu Frank Mir.

Dono de um boxe afiadíssimo, o atual campeão é apontado por nove entre dez especialistas como o favorito para esta peleja – a equipe do GRACIEMAG.com também aposta em Cigano, aliás.

Se o chão de Cigano ainda é uma incógnita no UFC, para alguns faixas-pretas de Jiu-Jitsu isso não fará a menor diferença na luta. A verdade é que poucos estão acreditando no queixo de Frank Mir nessa luta.

É o que acha Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, que diz confiar plenamente no amigo e treinador Luiz Dórea e aposta em nocaute do atual campeão.

“O Cigano é um monstro de atleta, e começou a carreira no Jiu-Jitsu. O Rodrigo Artilheiro estava comigo na casa do TUF Brasil e comentou que ele tem um gás sinistro. Ele tem 28 anos, começou com 22, tem pouco tempo de MMA mas já mostrou o seu valor. Eu acho que não passa do primeiro round, o Cigano derruba, mas mesmo se passar as condições físicas do Cigano são bem melhores que a do Frank Mir”, opina Durinho, ecoando declarações de Mir, para quem quanto mais durasse a luta, melhor.

E se você estivesse no lugar do Frank Mir? O que faria contra um lutador de mão pesada e certeira?

“Se eu fosse o Mir, eu tentaria derrubar, tentaria o clinche, a queda. Eu tentaria ser um Rousimar Toquinho ali, atacar o calcanhar, e sempre ficar muito esperto com a mão do Cigano. Para ganhar de um monstro assim, só se você trabalhar freneticamente na movimentação para botar para baixo. Eu teria de melhorar minha movimentação de perna, fintar muito bem e tentar aproveitar o clinche. O treino teria de ser este, botar para quedar, trabalhar o wrestling e no chão embolar no pé”, analisa Gilbert.

O participante do TUF Brasil, no entanto, não acredita que Mir será bem-sucedido na dura missão.

“Minha expectativa é de nocaute no primeiro round para o brasileiro. O Cigano está com a mão muito afiada, tem mais saúde por ser mais novo, tem a confiança de ser o campeão e tem um jogo de perna muito bom, vai ser nocaute. Confio no treinador Luiz Dórea, que fez um excelente trabalho. Basta o Cigano entrar tranquilo para lutar”, aposta o campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu peso leve em 2011.

“Acho que o Frank Mir vai errar depois de entrar o primeiro soco. Como campeão, na minha opinião o Cigano nem precisa buscar a luta, tem de ficar tranquilo, trabalhando seu jogo de perna, jabeando, porque o nocaute vai aparecer”, conclui o faixa-preta parceiro de Vitor Belfort.

In the 13th season of “The Ultimate Fighter”, Tony Ferguson emerged the winner. A first-round left hook downed also-finalist Ramsey Nijem to hand the Brock Lesnar team representative the six-figure UFC contract over his Junior Cigano team counterpart.

Now Clay Guida notched his fourth-straight win, against WEC champion Anthony Pettis, who failed to replicate the acrobatic flying kick that brought him to fame.

In the fight between Kyle Kingsbury and Fabio Maldonado, the takedowns of Kyle carried more weight in the judges’ scoring than the strikes of Maldonado, handing Kingsbury the unanimous decision win.

Na 13ª edição do “The Ultimate Fighter”, Tony Ferguson saiu como vencedor do reality show. Um soco ainda no primeiro round acabou com as chances de Ramsey Nijem para o triunfo do representante do time de Brock Lesnar contra o de Junior Cigano.

Já Clay Guida chegou à quarta vitória seguida contra o campeão do WEC Anthony Pettis, que não conseguiu repetir o acrobático chute voador que lhe rendeu fama.

Na luta entre Kyle Kingsbury e Fabio Maldonado, os juízes pontuaram mais as quedas de Kyle que os socos de Maldonado, o que valeu a vitória do primeiro por decisão unânime.

Fabio Maldonado volta ao UFC no TUF 13 Finale, evento que ocorre neste sábado (4), em Las Vegas. Após uma estreia vitoriosa contra James McSweeney no fim do ano passado, o brasileiro buscará a sua 12ª vitória consecutiva no MMA contra o norte-americano Kyle Kingsbury. Para o ex-boxeador, a fórmula é a de sempre: confiar em seu boxe para buscar o nocaute.

“Ele não é ruim em pé, mas não acho que ele vá querer trocar comigo”, prevê Maldonado, analisando os pontos fortes do oponente. “Eu sou melhor de pé, mas ele tem o wrestling melhor. Somos parecidos no chão, mas acho que tenho superioridade. O maior o perigo é eu achar que ele vai fazer algo e ele me pegar de surpresa”, concluiu.

Em sua última aparição no octagon, Fabio Maldonado nocauteou James McSweeney no segundo round, colocando sua herança de boxe em prática. Apesar de ser faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu, os punhos sempre são a primeira opção do ex-boxeador, que se diz orgulhoso pela boa trocação e não esconde a preferência de luta.

“Eu sempre vou preferir trocar de pé. Eu acredito que esteja fazendo tudo certo, trabalhando em minhas falhas. Melhorei minha defesa de quedas e acredito que possa nocautear meu adversário.”

Kyle Kingsbury, adversário de Maldonado, vem de uma sequência de três vitórias. A última foi o nocaute técnico sobre Ricardo Romero, no UFC 126.

Fabio Maldonado returns to the UFC octagon for the TUF 13 Finale this Saturday, June 4, in Las Vegas. Riding the wake of his victorious debut against James McSweeney last year, the Brazilian is looking to notch his twelfth-straight win in MMA against the USA’s Kyle Kingsbury. To the pugilist the formula remains the old tried and true: trust his boxing and go for the knockout.

“He’s not bad standing, but I don’t think he’s going to want to bang with me,” predicts Maldonado, delving into his opponent’s strong points, “I’m better standing but he has better wrestling. We’re pretty even on the ground, but I think I’m a bit better. The big danger comes in my thinking he’s going to do something and him catching me by surprise,” he concludes.

In his last outing in the cage Fabio Maldonado knocked out James McSweeney in the second round, putting his boxing background to work. In spite of his brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu, his fists are the first thing the former boxer goes to, saying he’s proud of his striking and doesn’t hide his preference for the style.

“I always rather trade standing. I feel I’m doing everything just right, ironing out my weaker points. I improved my takedown defense a lot and believe I can knock my opponent out.”

Kyle Kingsbury, Maldonado’s opponent, comes into the bout on a three-fight win streak, the last of which was a technical knockout over Ricardo Romero at UFC 126.

It was a good night of fighting in Texas this Wednesday at UFN 22. So good that five fighters got bonuses for their efforts, this time 40 grand-worth each.

Charles do Bronx proved he’s not fooling around. After getting the reward for best submission on his organizational debut at UFC on Versus 2, the beast from coastal São Paulo repeated the feat with a rear-naked choke against Efrain Escudero. Another bonus-winner to arise was ATT purple belt Cole Miller, who used the very move Charles did to tapout Ross Pearson.

Knockout of the night went to Brian Foster, who overcame Forrest Petz in the evening’s opener. Fight of the night went to Kyle Kingsbury and Jared Hamman, won by the former.
