Black belt Alberto Crane made his MMA return in the main event of the last King of the Cage event, in California. Along with the master, ten students of Gracie Barra Encino, a GMA affiliate of ours, put in great performances.

Rhonda Rousey, a bronze medalist at the Beijing Olympics, made her professional MMA debut. The other students of Crane on the card were Jared Papazian, Rob Gooch, Martin Gantt, Keenan Lewis and Daniel Clarke. Check out the results from the event:

As avid GRACIEMAG.com readers are aware, the March 27 King of the Cage event in Tarzana, California will be filled with students of our GMA Alberto Crane. In all, ten students of the Gracie Barra Encino teacher with branches in Pasadena and Burbank will be on the card.

What escaped most people’s attention, though, is that a judoka of the highest caliber will see action in the Californian cage, looking for her third MMA finish.

Her name is Rhonda Rosey, a bronze medalist from the Beijing 2008 Olympics making her professional MMA debut. An armbar buff, Rhonda is doing her preparations with a stalwart team, alongside Jared Papazian, Rob Gooch, Ako Harper, Martin Gantt, Keenan Lewis, Daniel Clark, Juan Pablo Garcia, Robert Gleckman and current blue belt absolute champion of the world Orlando Sanchez. But we’ll let Alberto Crane himself fill us in, in the following GRACIEMAG.com interview:

You have 18 career MMA fights with 13 wins and two appearances in the UFC. With this fight on the 27th are you picking up where you left off in your career?

I love MMA and competition and I would love to get a win in the UFC, but to be honest being a coach, dad and husband are more of a priority to me.

You’re going to fight and corner ten students at KOTC “Turning Point” on the 27th. How are you going to divide the two things for nothing to go wrong?

Its an MMA event, my students and I are fighting on the same night and many things can go wrong! But you have to believe in your students, yourself and I am confident! To be honest (about how ten of his students ended up on the same card) I think it happened over lunch with one of my students, Robert Gleckman, who wanted to fight, and so I put him in touch with the right people and the next thing I know it’s actually happening!

Which of your students fighting on the 27th is the best?

Let me just say that there is a lot of heart and talent and everybody’s technique is improving by the day!

Of the men, there’s Orlando Sanchez, one of your students with the most expressive results in the gi. Could he be making the move to MMA any time soon?

I think Orlando as of right now is planning on being the best he can be in Jiu-Jitsu, but MMA is something that definitely interests him and no doubt sees in his bright future!

And of the girls, there’s Rhonda. . .

What about you, when do you return to gi competition?

The last time I competed in the gi was in 2007. I would like to compete this year in the gi, but to be honest I am more of a coach these days! The academies Gracie Barra Encino, Pasadena and Burbank are going great and growing by the day!  Every now and again I get a visit from Draculino, who came by last week and gave an amazing seminar.

What advice would you give a young Jiu-Jitsu practitioner?

Man, I would say do your best, believe in yourself and surround yourself with the right people. That will get you there!

Como o leitor atento do GRACIEMAG.com ficou sabendo, o evento King of the Cage do próximo dia 27 de março, em Tarzana (Los Angeles), será recheado com dez alunos de nosso GMA Alberto Crane, professor da Gracie Barra Encino e mais duas filiais da GB em Pasadena e Burbank.

O que pouca gente reparou, porém, é que uma judoca de alto quilate estará em ação na jaula californiana, sedenta por sua terceira finalização no MMA.

Trata-se de Rhonda Rousey, medalhista de bronze em Pequim-2008, que faz sua estreia no MMA profissional. Fã de uma chave de braço, a lourinha Rhonda está se preparando com uma equipe forte, ao lado de Jared Papazian, Rob Gooch, Ako Harper, Martin Gantt, Keenan Lewis, Daniel Clark, Juan Pablo Garcia, Robert Gleckman e o atual campeão mundial azul absoluto, Orlando Sanchez. Mas deixemos que o próprio Alberto Crane conte, nesta entrevista ao GRACIEMAG.com. Confira:

Você tem 18 lutas de MMA na carreira, com 13 vitórias e duas participações no UFC. Essa luta do dia 27 é uma retomada da carreira?

Eu adoro MMA, amo competir, e certamente gostaria de vencer uma luta no UFC, mas hoje o trabalho como treinador, professor, pai e marido já é bastante recompensador.

Você vai lutar e ser córner de dez alunos no KOTC “Turning Point” do dia 27. Como dividir as duas coisas para não dar errado?

Bem, é um evento de MMA, meus alunos e eu vamos lutar na mesma noite e muita coisa pode dar errado! Mas, falando sério, o lance é acreditar, acreditar nos atletas como eu acredito nos meus, acreditar em mim mesmo. Por isso estou bastante confiante que tudo vai dar certo. Foi engraçado, estávamos almoçando, eu e meu aluno Robert Gleckman, que queria lutar MMA. Pusemos ele em contato com as pessoas certas do evento e quando vimos estávamos todos no card.

Quem é seu melhor aluno no evento do dia 27?

Eu digo apenas que todos vão exibir muito talento e muito coração. Todos eles estão desenvolvendo seu Jiu-Jitsu e suas técnicas a cada dia.

No masculino, tem o Orlando Sanchez, um de seus pupilos com resultados mais impressionantes no pano. Ele pode migrar para o MMA assim tão cedo?

Acredito que Orlando planeja ser o melhor que pode no Jiu-Jitsu esportivo. Mas o MMA é algo que definitivamente interessa a ele, e faz parte de seus planos brilhar no MMA também, no futuro.

No feminino, tem a Rhonda…

Isso, Rhonda Rousey foi medalha de bronze nos Jogos de Pequim no judô, e estou muito empolgado para vê-la em ação, mas não só ela. Estou amarradão de ver todos esses atletas buscando a vitória no dia 27!

E você, não volta ao pano?

A última vez em que lutei de pano foi em 2007. Estava querendo competir este ano, mas para falar a verdade estou mais de treinador do que atleta agora. As academias GB Encino, Pasadena e Burbank estão indo muito bem, crescendo muito, e volta e meia recebo a visita dos amigos e do mestre Draculino, que semana passada apareceu aqui para um seminário sensacional.

Que conselho daria para um jovem praticante de Jiu-Jitsu?

Faça seu melhor, acredite em si mesmo, cerque-se das pessoas certas. Basta isso e você certamente vai chegar lá.

Our GMA Alberto Crane has an MMA outing scheduled for the coming 27th. Besides himself, his students Orlando Sanchez and lightweight Daniel Clarke will also fight at the King of the Cage event in Tarzana, California.

Crane (13w, 5l) and the folks from GB Encino put together a video on Daniel Clarke’s preparations for the event and sent it in to us.
