Renan Barão won the UFC interim bantamweight belt in the main event at UFC 149 last July. In doing so, the black belt in Jiu-Jitsu from team Nova União went to town on Urijah Faber with low kicks knees and combinations of punches. Quite like his teammate José Aldo, who also managed to outpoint the “California Kid” without needing to go to the ground.

But what’s the story on Renan Barão’s Jiu-Jitsu? What is he capable of on the ground?

To find out more about one of the main ingredients in Barão’s game, we had a chat with his Jiu-Jitsu coach, Jair Lourenço.

Even though he’s already the interim bantamweight champion of the UFC, Renan Barão hasn’t shown his potential on the ground yet, has he?

He certainly hasn’t. I feel Barão still has a lot to show on the ground. But when the need arises he’ll show it; you can be sure of that. Grappling is what Barão practices most. And it’s worth keeping in mind that Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling are the styles he’s competed in the most to this day—even more than boxing and kickboxing. To paint you a picture, Renan practices Jiu-Jitsu every day; he’s an expert in taking the back and not letting positions get away.

Renan has had 31 MMA fights, with 29 wins and only one loss, on his MMA debut. In which of them did he show his best Jiu-Jitsu, in your opinion?

In the international scene, I’d say it was his WEC debut, against Anthony Leone in 2010. At a certain point he ended up on bottom, where he pulled off a slick hook sweep. When he was on top, he did a transition to armbar that ended the fight. But he also got a good submission in his second WEC fight, tapping out Chris Cariaso with a rear-naked choke.

What kind of results did he have in Jiu-Jitsu, “before he became famous”?

He competed a lot at light featherweight and featherweight, and even being so light he won some tournaments at weight and open weight. What not a lot of people know is that, even in the WEC and pretty much hired by the UFC, he made a point of competing at the 2010 Jiu-Jitsu State Championship. He had a tough final in the featherweight brown belt division against a tough athlete from Mossoró, Izaías, who won a bunch of tournaments in 2009. Even last year Barão competed in the gi; he won the Kimura ZN Jiu-Jitsu cup.

The first-ever UFC champion from the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, Renan “Barão” was received by the governor, Rosalba Ciarlini, for an official state-government tribute for having won the interim bantamweight belt of the biggest MMA event in the world. At the ceremony, and alongside his master Jair Lourenço of team Kimura Nova União, Barão was awarded a special plaque by the governor. “I’m so happy about it. It’s recognition for all the work I put in,” said the fighter.

Furthermore, the state secretary of sports and leisure, Joacy Bastos, pronounced that the sport deserves to be given priority, and guaranteed that Rosalba knows what “the sport represents within the context of society, and that is why investing in it has been given greater priority.”

“It’s really important to hear such words from the governor and secretary, and I hope that translates into greater investment in the sport. After all, our state has lots of fighters with lots of potential who just need a little incentive to make it to where I have. If they’re given it, Rio Grande do Norte will have other names in the biggest MMA event in the world,” stated Barão, who alongside Ronny Markes, Gleison Tibau and Jussier Formiga are the only natives of the state currently on the UFC roster.

Neste sábado, no Clube Hebraica, em Laranjeiras, zona sul do Rio, o levinho Jussier Formiga (10v, 1d) e o estreante meio-pesado Caio Alencar defendem a bandeira da escuderia potiguar contra Maicon William e Wagner Câmara, respectivamente.

“O Maicon é um cara duro e conhece bem o jogo do Jussier, mas desde a última vez que eles lutaram até hoje o Jussier evoluiu bastante, principalmente na trocação e no wrestling. Como, aliás, pudemos comprovar em sua última atuação nos Estados Unidos, no TPF 10, em agosto. Por isso a melhor tática será impor o seu jogo em pé e no chão, trocando, derrubando e procurando oportunidades para finalizar ou nocautear”, disse o treinador ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Jair acompanha as feras no evento de André Pederneiras e acredita que a experiência de pano conta muito a favor do estreante Caio Alencar.

“O Caião já foi campeão de Jiu-Jitsu na faixa-preta e este ano vem num ritmo forte de competições, tendo sido campeão absoluto no Norte-Nordeste, além de terceiro colocado em Abu Dhabi, no World Pro, categoria até 92kg. Acredito que ele está bem fisicamente e apesar de ser um estreante tem uma boa bagagem de competições. Isso vai ajudá-lo a controlar melhor aquela adrenalina de estreia no MMA”, completou.

Jair Lourenço, the leader of Natal, Brazil’s team Kimura, is confident his students will triumph at Shooto Brazil 26.

This Saturday at the Clube Hebraica club in Rio de Janeiro, flyweight Jussier Formiga (10w, 1l) and debuting light heavyweight Caio Alencar will defend their academy’s coat of arms against Maicon William and Wagner Câmara, respectively.

“Maicon is a tough guy and knows Jussier’s game but Jussier has evolved a lot since the first time they fought, mainly in his striking and wrestling. This was clear at his last performance, lat August at TPF 10 in the USA. That’s why our strategy will be to push the pace standing and on the ground, striking, getting takedowns and looking for chances to get the tapout or knockout,” Lourenço told GRACIEMAG.com.

Jair will be accompanying his fighters to the André Pederneiras-produced event, and believes his experience in the gi will work in the debuting Caio Alencar’s favor.

“Caio is already a Jiu-Jitsu champion as a black belt and has been keeping a strong pace in competition this year, having won the Norte-Nordeste absolute division, taken third in the under-92 kg division at the Abu Dhabi World Pro. I feel he’s physically well and has solid experience from competing, despite it being his first MMA fight. It will help him when it comes to controlling the adrenaline of his MMA debut,” he said in finishing.

With 11 wins and one loss, not to mention how five of those wins came by knockout and four by submission, Rony Markes has been turning heads in MMA. And his latest win, at the IFC in Recife, put the Shooto South America champion in the spotlight. In an all out war, Rony defeated former WEC champion and Pride FC fighter Paulo Filho.

“Paulão is a hero to me. I didn’t even need to watch his fights to face him, because I’d seem them all thousands of times,” he remarks.

A native of the city of Natal, Rony is one of Master Jair Lourenço’s brood of fighters and trains alongside Jiu-Jitsu savants like Caio Alencar, a brown belt who made some noise at the recent World Pro.

Don’t be surprised if, in the near future, Rony does well for himself in major world events. In the meantime, get to know a bit about the fighter in the video below:

Com 11 vitórias e apenas uma derrota, além da marca de cinco nocautes e quatro finalizações, Ronny Markes vem chamando a atenção no MMA. E a última vitória, no IFC, em Recife, coloca o campeão sul-americano do Shooto em evidência. Numa verdadeira batalha, Ronny derrotou Paulo Filho, ex-campeão do WEC e ídolo do Pride.

“Paulão é um ídolo para mim. Nem precisei assistir às lutas dele para enfrentá-lo, pos já as havia visto milhares de vezes”, comenta.

Atleta de Natal, Ronny é uma das crias do mestre Jair Lourenço e treina ao lado de bons atletas no Jiu-Jitsu como Caio Alencar, faixa-preta que deu trabalho nas disputas do World Pro, recentemente.

Número um do mundo na categoria mosca em vários rankings de MMA, Jussier Formiga estreou com o pé direito nos Estados Unidos. O campeão sul-americano do Shooto combateu no Tachi Palace Fights 7, contra Danny Martinez, e, depois de três rounds movimentados, foi declarado vencedor por decisão unânime. Com o triunfo, Formiga chega à marca de 10 vitórias, e segue invicto.

Na luta principal da noite, Jorge Oliveira precisou de pouco mais de um minuto para finalizar James Irvin com um triângulo e conquistar o cinturão da categoria até 77kg, conta o nosso colaborador Junior Samurai.

World number one on the various MMA rankings Jussier Formiga made his US debut on the right foot. The Shooto champion did battle against Danny Martinez at Tachi Palace Fights 7 was declared the victor by unanimous decision after three lively rounds. With the win Formiga brings his record to ten fights and remains unbeaten.

In the evening’s main event Jorge Oliveira needed just over a minute to submit James Irvin with a triangle lock and snatch the under 77kg belt, reports our collaborator Junior Samurai.

A primeira seletiva sul-americana para o World Pro foi em Natal, no Rio Grande do Norte. Para animar a festa local, a cidade teve um representante entre os campeões da faixa-marrom e preta, Caio Alencar, no peso acima de 92kg.

Na competição, o lutador finalizou todas as quatro lutas que fez no peso, além de fechar a categoria absoluto. Contente pela possibilidade de lutar em Abu Dhabi, o representante da Kimura Nova União se sente feliz por mostrar as qualidades da sua região no Jiu-Jitsu.

“Foi muito bom, porque estamos muito longe do eixo Rio-São Paulo e competições assim mostram que no Nordeste do Brasil tem muita gente boa de Jiu-Jitsu. Acho que ficamos prejudicados por não ter tantas competições aqui, o que nos deixa um pouco fora de ritmo. Abu Dhabi veio e o pessoal pôde ver que temos grandes promessas”, comenta.

Na categoria de Caio, o campeão do World Pro em 2010 foi Ricardo Demente. O lutador está satisfeito pela chance de enfrentar alguns dos melhores do mundo.

“Para mim vai ser uma honra muito grande. Sei que a maioria lá disputa as competições maiores há mais tempo que eu, são mais experientes, mas talvez possa surpreender. Vai ser uma honra, porque o Jiu-Jitsu é a minha filosofia de vida e é disso que eu gosto. A grande festa da minha vida é quando estou lutando!”.

O trabalho segue duro até o World Pro, quando finalmente vai estar em ação.

“Vou manter o treinamento, a preparação física e o foco. Vou chegar lá pronto para dar o meu melhor, para fazer o impossível. Não desisto nunca!”, encerra a fera de Natal.

The first South American qualifying tournament for the World Pro was held last Wednesday in the city of Natal, Brazil.

To the joy local crowd’s delight, one of the city’s representatives qualified in the brown/black belt division: Caio Alencar, in the over-92kg weight group.

The fighter submitted all four of the opponents he faced in his weight class, as well as shutting out the absolute. Content with the opportunity to compete in Abu Dhabi, the Kimura Nova União representative is happy to be able to show the quality of Jiu-Jitsu in his region.

“It was great because we’re really far from the Rio-São Paulo axis and tournaments like this one show how there are a lot of good Jiu-Jitsu guys in Brazil’s northeast. I feel we’re set back for not having many competitions around here, which means we lack some rhythm. Abu Dhabi is coming up and people can see we have some very promising athletes,” he comments.

In Caio’s weight class, the champion at World Pro 2010 was Ricardo Demente. The fighter is pleased about having a chance to face some of the best in the world.

“It will be a great honor for me. I know most of the guys there have been competing in the big tournaments for longer than me, they’re more experienced, but I may surprise them. It will be a great honor because Jiu-Jitsu is my philosophy of life and it’s what I like best. Competing is a party to me!”

Now he carries on working hard until the World Pro, when he’ll finally be back in action.

“I’m going to keep on training, doing physical conditioning, and staying focused. I’ll be ready to give my best when I get there, to do the impossible. I never give up!” says the mat whiz from Natal in finishing.

O Internacional de Masters e Seniors move os veteranos de várias partes do mundo e no Brasil não é diferente. Líder da equipe Kimura, em Natal, uma das grandes forças do Nordeste, Jair Lourenço está contente por lutar pela primeira vez na competição. 

“O Internacional de Masters vale como um Mundial para nós veteranos. Esse ano vai ser a minha primeira participação e vou com tudo”, conta. 

“Vou levar dessa vez apenas nove atletas, porque não tive tempo de regularizar toda a turma na CBJJ. Mas, no próximo ano, quero que a equipe entre forte”, completa. 

Jair costuma lutar na categoria senior e sai com medalhas em muitas competições. No Internacional, sabe que vai ter a chance de encarar atletas consagrados no Jiu-Jitsu. 

“Acho demais e estou amarradão de lutar e ver essa galera de perto. Seria uma grande honra para mim lutar no absoluto com um cara como o Gordo, por exemplo”, finaliza.

Em conferência de imprensa realizada esta semana, nos Estados Unidos, um dos dirigentes do WEC, Reed Harris, confirmou que isso realmente deve acontecer nesta temporada. “Estamos trabalhando em cima disso para este ano”, declara.

A inclusão da categoria coloca o WEC de vez como a maior organização entre os pesos mais leves. O peso mosca é o único que falta ser incorporado e isso pode trazer alguns novos atletas de peso ao evento. Entre eles, feras como o brasileiro Jussier Formiga, que lidera a maioria dos rankings mundiais, e os japoneses Shinichi Kojima e Yuki Shojo, entre outros.
