Em 2013, o Campeonato Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu chega à sua décima edição. Consagrado como um dos quatro eventos mais importantes do calendário da arte suave, o Europeu abre a temporada na charmosa e acolhedora Lisboa.

A capital de Portugal foi palco de grandes duelos nas edições passadas e o Europeu 2013 promete fazer jus à reputação do campeonato. De 24 a 27 de janeiro, atletas de todas as idades e faixas, homens e mulheres vão aquecer o inverno lisboeta mais uma vez.

Desde a sua criação, o Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu é uma parceria da IBJJF com a Federação Portuguesa de Jiu-Jitsu Brasileiro (FPJJB), presidida pelo faixa-preta Kiko Alves da Silva, com o também faixa-preta Diogo Valença como vice-presidente.

O GRACIEMAG.com conversou com Kiko sobre a história e o impacto do Europeu no cenário de lutas local, e em especial sobre as novidades que a edição 2013 promete trazer. As inscrições para o Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu seguem até 16 de janeiro. Não perca tempo e inscreva-se já, pelo site IBJJF.org.

GRACIEMAG: O Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu chega à décima edição em 2013. Que balanço você faz dessa década?

KIKO ALVES: Foi uma surpresa agradável ver a evolução do campeonato. O que começou como um sonho e um projeto para o futuro revelou-se uma realidade. O Europeu rapidamente tornou-se um dos mais importantes campeonatos de Jiu-Jitsu no mundo. A popularidade da competição espalhou-se para o mundo inteiro, e hoje é um título cobiçado por qualquer atleta de elite.

É possível medir o quanto o Europeu influenciou no aumento do número de praticantes de Jiu-Jitsu no Velho Continente?

Apesar de a cada ano assistirmos a um crescimento exponencial no número de participantes, o Jiu-Jitsu federado na Europa ainda está num estado embrionário. Mais federações estão sendo criadas, claro, mas existem ainda muitos países na Europa onde a graduação mais alta é a faixa-roxa de Jiu-Jitsu. Há em curso, no entanto, um excelente trabalho de formação por parte dos professores faixas-pretas na Europa. Eles conseguem abrir filiais de suas escolas e elegem um aluno graduado que, entre os diversos seminários do professor ao longo do ano, assegura que as aulas sigam o programa de treino. É uma situação que acontece quando não existe um professor residente, principalmente em países em que a língua torna mais difícil a comunicação, apesar de o Jiu-Jitsu ter uma linguagem universal, como sabemos. Seja como for, o Europeu tem motivado o surgimento de novas escolas, e os novos alunos também têm ajudado o Europeu a crescer.

Qual para você foi o maior momento desses dez anos de Europeu?

Para mim, o grande momento do Campeonato dá-se todos os anos, quando amigos se encontram e partilham novidades, conhecimento e experiências. Essa é na verdade a essência do Jiu-Jitsu. No entanto, existiram também grandes momentos em termos competitivos também. Um deles foi o retorno do campeão Lucio Lagarto, em 2011, após um quadro prolongado de doença. Outro foi a conquista de Bráulio Estima, em 2011 também, que lutou apenas para homenagear um aluno falecido. O momento mais emocionante talvez tenha sido o respeito demonstrado por milhares de atletas quando lhes foi comunicado, no meio do torneio, o falecimento do grande mestre Helio Gracie, em 2009. Mais de 3.000 pessoas guardaram um minuto de silêncio em que não se ouvia uma mosca no ginásio…. Simplesmente impressionante.

Que novidades os atletas e espectadores vão encontrar este ano em relação ao ano passado?

A cada ano que passa, e como fruto da experiência da organização ao lidar com situações novas, buscamos modificações com o intuito de melhorar toda a estrutura do campeonato. Essas modificações podem ser simples, como o número de áreas de luta ou as fardas do árbitros ou a localização da área de aquecimento. Uma das melhorias que vamos introduzir em 2013 será a informatização dos placares das dez áreas de luta, tornando mais fácil para todos – atletas, treinadores e público – seguirem o resultado das lutas, cronômetros etc. Sempre ponderamos e pesamos prós e contras para que tudo seja feito para a melhoria efetiva das condições e qualidade da competição. Teremos com certeza mais inovações, mas vamos deixar no ar até a data do campeonato, no fim de janeiro.

Para quem vai a Lisboa, que dicas de turismo você dá este ano?

Lisboa é uma cidade hospitaleira e com um custo benefício excelente em termos de Europa. Temos hotéis cinco estrelas com diárias na média de 50 euros por noite, excelentes restaurantes, e um clima fantástico nesta época do ano. Para quem não conhece a cidade, os monumentos imponentes e o litoral inteiro são pontos de passagem obrigatória para o turista. Lisboa e o Europeu têm sido palco de muitos acontecimentos agradáveis, reencontro de pessoas e relacionamentos que começam, talvez, quem sabe, influenciados pela magia da cidade das sete colinas…

In 2013, the European Jiu-Jitsu Championship will be reaching its tenth installment. Among the four biggest events on the gentle-art calendar, the Europeans sets the tournament ball rolling in the charming and welcoming Lisbon, Portugal.

The Portuguese capital has been stage to great matches from events past, and the 2013 European Open looks set to live up to the tournament’s reputation. From the 24th to the 27th of January, athletes of all ages and belts, men and women, will heat up the Lisboan winter once again.

Ever since it’s conception, the European Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship has been a joint-venture between the IBJJF and the FPJJB, the Portuguese Jiu-Jitsu Federation, presided over by black belt Kiko Alves da Silva, with also-black belt Diogo Velença serving as vice-president.

GRACIEMAG.com had a chat with Kiko about the history and impact of the European Open on the local martial arts scene, and most importantly about the news the 2013 installment brings. GRACIEMAG.com: The European Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship will be reaching its tenth installment, in 2013. What is your take on how the last ten years have gone?

KIKO ALVES: It was a pleasant surprise to see how the championship has evolved. What started out as a dream and project for the future has become reality. The European Open quickly became one of the most important championships in world Jiu-Jitsu. The popularity of the tournament has spread around the world, and today it’s a title coveted by all elite competitors.

Is there any way to measure how much the European Open has influenced the rise in the number of Jiu-Jitsu practitioners around Europe?

Though with every year we see exponential growth in the number of participants, federated Jiu-Jitsu in Europe is still in its embryonic stage. More federations are being created, of course, but there are still a lot of countries in Europe where the highest ranked practitioner is purple belt. They manage to open up branches of their schools by placing the highest-ranked student there to, between the different seminars by the Jiu-Jitsu professor throughout the year, assure the training program is followed. It’s a situation that happens when there’s no resident teacher, mainly in countries where the language they speak makes communication difficult, despite Jiu-Jitsu being a universal language, as we all know. Either way, the European Open has led to new schools being opened, and the new students have also helped the European Open to grow.

What was the greatest moment for you in this ten-year history of the European Open?

To me every year has great moments, when friends meet up to share news, knowledge and experiences. Truth is, that’s the essence of Jiu-Jitsu. However, there are also great moments in terms of competition as well. One of them was the champion Lucio Lagarto’s 2011 return after a prolonged period of illness. The other was Bráulio Estima’s conquest, also in 2011, when he fought only to pay tribute to a student of his who passed away. The most emotional moment was perhaps the respect thousands of students showed when, halfway through the tournament, news broke of Grandmaster Helio Gracie’s passing, in 2009. More than 3,000 people stood in silence for a minute when not a fly could be heard in the gymnasium… It was simply striking.

For those going to Lisbon, what tourism tips can you give them this year?

Lisbon is a very welcoming city and there’s great cost-benefit compared to elsewhere in Europe. We have five-star hotels that cost an average of 50 euros per night, excellent restaurants and fantastic weather at this time of the year. For those not yet familiar with the city, the imposing monuments and whole coastline are must-sees for tourists. Lisbon and the European Open have been the setting for many pleasant occurrences, re-encounters between old friends and the start of new relationships, perhaps influenced by the magic of the city of the seven hills…

The course is open for athletes from white to black belt.

The event was held at the same weekend of the Pan 2011, in Lisbon.

Valença tells us of some amazing marks the event reached: “We had around 250 athletes. Among those, we had 50 children and athlets from 4 to 60 years old.”

The 1^st Portuguese champions form now the Portuguese BJJ national team and will now have priority in events where there is a selection process, like the IBJJF European Open.

The teams competition had the following results:

1^st: Gracie Barra Lisboa / Seixal

2^nd: Fight Planet / Nova União

3^rd: Royce Gracie Portugal

The pupils of black belt Zaid Mirza conquered nine medals on the mats, breaking the record of Middle East countries in the tournament.

“We took a big team this year and we were able to achieve amazing results.  We finished our preparation in lisbon’s Gracie Barra with instructor Kiko da Silva wich was great for the team.  Gave them a gerat deal of confidence.” says a proud Mirza.

“Foi o maior feito de um país do Oriente Médio na história dos Europeus. Levamos um time grande este ano e conseguimos resultados fantásticos, como as nove medalhas individuais e o terceiro lugar na disputa de seleções na faixa-azul”, vibrou Mirza.

O dirigiente agradeceu pela preparação do time na reta final na Gracie Barra Portugal, em Lisboa, com o professor Kiko Alves da Silva.

“Foi ótimo para a equipe, nos deu uma grande dose de confiança para brilhar no campeonato”, disse.

O time jordaniano, com sede na capital Amam, participou da disputa de países, na categoria faixa-azul. Pela presença de equipes da França, Bélgica e Brasil, o terceiro lugar foi muito comemorado.

Mirza aproveitou o contato com GRACIEMAG.com para bater o martelo na segunda edição do luxuoso Capital Challenge, marcado para o fim de 2010. Ele ainda anunciou o primeiro grande show de MMA na Jordânia, com um card internacional forte, mesclado aos talentos locais estreantes no ringue.
