Fim de ano, tempo de desacelerar no trabalho, rever os amigos, encher os restaurantes e a pança. Isso, claro, se você não for um lutador da Nova União com compromisso marcado para o início de 2013.

Convidada pelo treinador André Pederneiras, a equipe do GRACIEMAG.com foi esta semana na academia Upper, no Flamengo, para ver em ação alguns dos astros da equipe.

Campeão dos pesos-penas, José Aldo (21v, 1d) cumprimentou o fotógrafo Gustavo Aragão e o repórter Carlos Arthur Jr. dizend0-se não estar 100%, não: “Estou é mil por cento. O problema agora é um só: estou com muita, muita vontade de voltar ao octagon”, disse o faixa-preta amazonense, referindo-se à luta adiada, em outubro, após um leve acidente de moto no Rio.

Que o oponente Frankie Edgar venha pronto, pois o brasileiro de 26 anos promete treinar como nunca. Entre um treino e outro, a equipe GRACIEMAG.com ainda pôde se deliciar com um round de luxo do mais puro MMA: Renan Barão contra Johnny Eduardo. Pau-pereira.

Com o fim do treino, Aldo papeou com nossa reportagem sobre a luta contra o ex-campeão dos leves Frankie Edgar, que vem de duas derrotas para Ben Henderson, nas edições de número 144 e 150 do UFC, e agora desceu para categoria dos penas para tentar o título da categoria abaixo.

GRACIEMAG.com: Como estão os treinos já visando à luta em Las Vegas, em fevereiro?

JOSÉ ALDO: Na verdade estamos apenas iniciando, pois falta pouco mais de dois meses para a luta. Nós vamos começar a acelerar um pouco agora, mas quando estiver faltando por volta de um mês, o treino será intensificado. Mas já estamos dando os primeiros passos da preparação.

Frankie Edgar desceu de categoria para tentar o cinturão dos penas, mas isso não é novidade para você. Foi o mesmo caso com o Kenny Florian. A mudança de categoria pode ser vantajosa para você, que está mais acostumado a lutar com 66kg?

É nisso que a gente aposta. É a primeira vez que ele vai lutar nos penas, e vai ter de perder um pouco mais de peso. Mas luta é luta. Será a primeira vez que ele vai bater esse peso e lutar numa categoria de lutadores muito rápidos. Do meu lado, eu estou fazendo a minha parte, me preparando e treinando ao máximo para chegar lá e defender o meu título.

Como você analisa o estilo de jogo do Frankie?

É um cara que se movimenta bastante, com uma explosão física muito boa, e que gosta de surpreender. Ele não para durante as suas lutas e tem um ótimo gás. Estamos analisando o atleta, vendo onde ele acerta e onde ele tem falhas para definir a melhor estratégia e fazer uma boa luta.

Para fechar,  que balanço você faz do ano de 2012?

Eu sou um cara muito positivo, então diria que foi ótimo. Eu esperava fazer três lutas este ano, fiz apenas uma. Tive duas contusões, sofri um acidente de moto… Mas para mim foi ótimo. Estou com saúde, isso que importa. O resto a gente corre atrás.

It’s year’s end: time to slow down at work, catch up with the friends, fill up restaurants and the old belly. That is if you’re not a certain fighter from Nova União who has an engagement in the cage scheduled for early 2013, of course.

At the invitation of Nova União head coach André Pederneiras, the GRACIEMAG.com crew headed over to the team’s Rio de Janeiro headquarters to get a look some of the team’s stars in training.

When UFC featherweight champion José Aldo Jr. (21-1) greeted photographer Gustavo Aragão and reporter Carlos Arthur Jr., he said he wasn’t quite 100 percent: “I’m 1000 percent. I’ve only got one problem: I really, really want to get back in the octagon. I want to fight too much,” the black belt said, alluding to how the fight had previously been scheduled for October but was postponed due to a motorcycle accident he suffered in Rio.

His challenger, Frankie Edgar, had better be ready, as the 26-year-old Brazilian is promising to train like never before.

Once the training session was over, Aldo had the following chat with our reporters about his upcoming title defense against former lightweight champion Edgar, who is coming off back-to-back losses to Ben Henderson and has now dropped to the featherweight division in hopes of claiming the title.

GRACIEMAG.com: How is training for your Feb. fight in Las Vegas going?

JOSÉ ALDO: Truth is, we’re just getting started, since there’s still a bit over two months to go till the fight. We’re going to start stepping it up a bit now, but once we’re one month from the fight, then we’ll intensify the training. But we’re starting our first steps in preparations.

Frankie Edgar dropped to featherweight to try to take your belt, but that’s nothing new for you. It was the same deal with Kenny Florian. Can this move to a different weight class be an advantage to you since you’re more accustomed to fighting at 145 pounds?

That’s what we’re counting on. It’ll be his first time fighting at featherweight, and he’ll have to lose a bit more weight. But a fight’s a fight. It’ll be the first time he fights in this division, where there’s a faster class of fighter. As for me, I’m doing my part, preparing and training as much as I can to get out there and defend my title.

What’s your take on Frankie Edgar’s style?

He moves around a lot, is really explosive, and he likes to surprise. He never stops and has great endurance. We’re analyzing him, seeing what he gets right and wrong so we can come up with the best strategy and have a good fight.

Last of all, how do you feel 2012 went for you?

I’m a really positive guy, so I’d say it went great. I expected to have three fights this year, but only had one. I had two injuries, suffered a motorcycle accident… But to me it was great. I’m healthy; that’s what matters. The rest we can make happen.

A seasoned wrestler who’s long been making the rounds at the ADCC and other No-Gi tournaments, Jeff Monson, 41, is still a force to be reckoned with in MMA.

The American Top Team Jiu-Jitsu black belt has been on a roll in MMA in 2012. Since suffering a decision loss at the hands of Fedor Emelianenko at Russian event M-1 Global in November of last year, the American hasn’t lost once in 2012.

He’s had six fights this year, five of them wins and one a draw—and major kudos to him for the north-south choke on Alexander Emelianenko, Fedor’s brother, last November 15 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Monson’s latest win came this Saturday at South Korean event Road FC, where he beat hometown fighter Dong Gook Kang by judges’ decision.

Wrestler veterano consagrado nos torneios sem kimono do ADCC, Jeff Monson, 41 anos, segue em alta.

O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu da American Top Team tem feito bonito no MMA em 2012. Após derrota para Fedor Emelianenko em novembro do ano passado, no M-1 Global russo, por decisão dos jurados, o peso pesado americano não perdeu em 2012.

Foram seis lutas, com cinco vitórias e um empate – com destaque para a finalização em cima do Alexander Emelianenko, mano de Fedor, no estrangulamento norte-sul, no último dia 15 de novembro em São Petersburgo, Rússia.

A última vitória foi nesse sábado, no evento sul-coreano Road FC, contra o local Dong Gook Kang, na decisão dos jurados.

Em homenagem ao longevo Boneco de Neve, o GRACIEMAG.com garimpou este confere com o ex-atleta meio-médio do UFC Kenny Florian, em 2002. A luta foi válida pelo absoluto do Grapplers Quest.

An illustrious fighter mulls around the train station, keen to which line will get him to Manhattan. José Aldo is enjoying some down time in New York, after successfully defending his title against Kenny Florian last Saturday at UFC 136. Tourism, visiting friends and shopping with the wife are his “tiring” itinerary. That was at around 9pm, when the UFC champ had the following chat with GRACIEMAG.com:

You didn’t suffer much in beating Florian but it wasn’t what the public is used to seeing from you. Some comments are that you fought strategically, not putting yourself at risk. What are your thoughts on that? Could you have taken more risks?

Let’s go part by part. I had a perfect fight, just the way we trained and put together a strategy for. We debated a lot, watched videos, and the conclusion we came to was that I had to fight like that. But because everybody knows my style, that I go forward the whole time, there was something missing. I could have done more, people know I have the potential to do so. But it’s hard when you’re in there fighting; only when you’re in there do you know what you can or can’t do, when you feel it in the flesh. So I do feel I could have done much more but, because of what I practiced and the fact I was facing someone like Kenny Florian, I had a good fight. I always review everything afterwards to try and come back even stronger.

Did Kenny make it hard on you? Everyone knows he can be dangerous, has some dangerous ground and pound, for example…

He’s an experienced guy who keeps a steady pace and capitalizes on your mistakes. He’s always waiting for you to make a mistake. I could have loosened up and taken more risks but then I’d open myself up for mistakes. I have to give Kenny credit, he’s a high-level opponent and has had title fights in several divisions.

Do you want to move up and fight at lightweight? And what would be the reason?

It’s a goal of mine to test myself at a heavier weight. I’ve fought heavier before, lighter too. I don’t have problems making weight, it’s fine. Of course, there is a sacrifice but I have no problem with it. This last fight went well, I was still strong after making weight. Fighting heavier is just something I want to do. One day I want to test myself at lightweight but for now I don’t see that happening. Dedé’s the one who’ll decide that. My coach will know when the right time comes. I’ll leave it in his hands. I’m fine in my division and I still have many title defenses to come.

There’s talk of you representing Flamengo soccer club. It’s said that should go through by early next year. How are those negotiations going?

I really hope it goes through. It would be good for Flamengo, would be good for me, for everybody. As a good Flamengo fan, I hope to be a Flmaengo athlete. But it if doesn’t happen I won’t be upset about it. I’ll still cheer for them and go to the games.

Na estação de trem circula um ilustre lutador atento ao embarque correto com destino a Manhattan. José Aldo curte um pouco a folga em Nova York, depois de ter derrotado Kenny Florian no último sábado, no UFC 136. Passeios, visita aos amigos e compras com a esposa estão no “cansativo” itinerário. Foi por volta das 22h no Brasil (21h em NY), e nesta situação, que o campeão peso pena conversou com o GRACIEMAG.com. O resultado disso você confere a seguir:

Você venceu Florian sem sofrer, mas não foi como o público é acostumado a te ver. Algumas análises apontaram uma luta mais estratégica e até burocrática. O que acha disso tudo? Poderia ter arriscado mais?

Vamos por partes. Fiz uma luta perfeita, do jeito que a gente treinou e montamos a tática. Debatemos muito, assistimos vídeos e a conclusão que tivemos foi como a luta. Mas pelo fato de todo mundo conhecer o meu estilo, de eu ser um cara que vai para a frente o tempo todo, ficou faltando algo. Poderia ter feito mais, as pessoas sabem que tenho potencial para isso. Mas na luta é difícil e quem está lá dentro sabe o que dá e o que não dá para fazer, sabe o que está sentindo na pele. Enfim, acho que poderia ter rendido muito mais, mas pelo o que eu treinei e por ter um adversário como o Kenny Florian, fiz uma boa luta. Sempre analiso tudo depois para tentar voltar mais forte.

O Kenny dificultou muito? Todos sabem que ele pode ser perigoso, aproveitar o ground and pound muito bem, por exemplo…  

Ele é um cara experiente, que joga cadenciando e em cima do seu erro. Ele está sempre esperando um erro seu. Poderia ter me soltado bem mais e arriscado, mas aí me abriria para um erro. Tenho que dar mérito ao Kenny, que é um adversário de alto nível e já disputou o cinturão em várias categorias.

Você tem ou não vontade de lutar na categoria de cima? E qual seria o motivo, tem dificuldade em bater o peso pena?

É um objetivo meu me testar na categoria de cima. Já joguei no peso de cima e no de baixo também. Não tenho dificuldade em bater o peso, é tranquilo. Existe o sacrifício, lógico, mas não tenho problema. Nesta última luta fui muito bem, continuei forte. É um desejo meu, mesmo. Um dia quero me testar no peso de cima, mas, por enquanto, não vejo isso acontecer. Quem vai decidir é o Dedé. O meu treinador vai saber o momento certo, deixo na mão dele. Estou bem na minha categoria e desejo defender muitos títulos ainda.

Vem sendo muito falado sobre a grande possibilidade de você se tornar atleta do Flamengo. Informações dão conta de que deve acontecer até o início do próximo ano. Como anda essa negociação?

Estou torcendo para acontecer, torço muito para isso sair. Vai ser bom para o Flamengo, vai ser bom para mim, para todo mundo! Como bom flamenguista, espero ser atleta do Fla, mas, se não for, não vou ter mágoa nenhuma. Continuarei torcendo, indo aos jogos.

José Aldo successfully defended his UFC belt for the second time last night, in Houston, bringing his winning streak to 13. Just after the five-round fight with Kenny Florian at UFC 136 last night in Houston, Aldo admitted he had an idea his opponent would make it hard for him to finish, as Florian stiffled him with the clinch.

“It was more or less what I’d expected, Kenny being the strategist he is. He’s a great fighter, has fought in a bunch of divisions. I knew he was waiting for me to make a mistake, so I tried containing my excitement. I’ll be better at the next one,” said Aldo.

On his strategy for facing Kenny, who made things hard on him in the opening round up against the fencing, Aldo said he got keys from BJ Penn’s fight with Florian.

“I knew he’d put me up against the fencing and I’m really good at defending from there. I expected it and defended and threw strikes accordingly.

In the break between each round, Aldo’s coach, Dedé Pederneiras, implored the fighter to kick, to further punish Florian’s already battered leg, but the champion decided not to risk it, as a question of strategy.

“He was looking to go for the takedown when I’d kick. Any thing I’d do and he’d shoot in on my legs, so I restrained myself in kicking. I could have landed a bunch but kept calm to be sure of the win,” he said in closing.

While the two title fights headlining UFC 136 last night in Houston were the main focus, Chael Sonnen made a splash of his own with his win, quick to issue another challenge to Anderson Silva right after.

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard

In the main event of the evening, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard had a thrilling match, which Frankie came from behind to win in spectacular fashion. In the opening round the champion took some heavy shots, was wisibly wobbled by an upper cut but hung on. The second and third round saw Frankie get the better of the action, and in the fourth he came up with the knockout after landing a right hook that grounded his opponent, following up with strikes on the ground. Still, the Frankie vs. Maynard trilogy remains without a winner, as they share one win apiece and a draw between them.

José Aldo vs. Kenny Florian

José Aldo left nothing to chance in defending his UFC title for a second time, against Kenny Florian. After an evenly-matched first round, Aldo went on to land strikes with frequency and even make it to mount twice. With his leg battered from stinging leg kicks, Florian relied on clinching against the fencing to make things hard on Aldo, who with the unanimous decision win brings his winning streak to 13 and defends his featherweight title for the second time.

Chael Sonnen vs Brian Stann

Sonnen – who’d have guessed? – used the Jiu-Jitsu he speaks so negatively about to good effect, taking Brian Stann down at will and moving to back mount and mount a number of times. The end came in round two, when Sonnen landed an arm triangle choke for the tapout. After his arm was raised he was quick to speak evil of Anderson Silva and make a promise he’ll hope he won’t have to keep: to quit the UFC if Anderson Silva should beat him again.

Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan

Both needed wins at all costs, having come off porr results. But it was the smaller Nam Phan who peppered Garcia with strikes and even landing a knockdown. While Garcia did launch a rally-back flurry of strikes in the third round, it wasn’t enough, as Phan was rightly given the unanimous nod. Garcia, who lost his second in a row, was applauded for his efforts, as he exited the cage.

Contra Kenny Florian, neste sábado, no UFC 136, José Aldo defendeu o cinturão de penas pela segunda vez e chegou à 13ª vitória seguida. Logo após a luta em Houston, que durou os cinco rounds, Aldo admitiu que esperava um oponente que o atrapalharia. Florian dificultou o nocaute e a finalização tendo usado muito o clinch.

“Foi mais ou menos como esperava, pelo fato de o Kenny ser um estrategista. Ele é um ótimo lutador, já disputou em várias categorias. Sabia que ele iria jogar no meu erro, então tentei conter os ânimos. Na próxima venho melhor”, disse.

Sobre a estratégia de Kenny, que trouxe dificuldade ao brasileiro no assalto inicial, com um jogo travado nas grades, Aldo pode se precaver. Foi importante ter assistido ao combate de Florian contra BJ Penn, que valia o título de leves.

“Sabia que ele iria me colocar na grade e defendo isso muito bem. Vi muito a luta dele contra o BJ e ele sempre tentava levar para a grade. Já esperava isso e procurei me defender e acertar os golpes aos poucos.”

A cada round, o treinador Dedé Pederneiras pedia para Aldo chutar. Florian sentia bastante a perna, realmente, mas o campeão preferiu não se arriscar tanto por uma questão estratégica.

“Ele queira me botar para baixo na hora do chute. Qualquer movimento que Fizesse ali ele iria entrar nas minhas pernas. Procurei conter mais os chutes, acho que dava para encaixar vários, mas mantive a calma e valorizei a vitória”, encerrou.
