A black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and owner of a number of IBJJF titles, Jonatas Novaes saw MMA action this Saturday, June 16, at SF Shofight 20. At the Springfield, Missouri event, the Rodrigo Comprido students was quick on the trigger and took just 51 seconds before landing a high kick um chute alto,

that landed in full, dropping dazed former UFC fighter Drew Fickett to the mat. Following up on the ground, the Brazilian dropped fists to finish what he started.

In other fights on the Shofight card, Lyle Beerbohm took a unanimous decision over Marcus Aurélio, and Kendall Grove overcame Derek Brunson by split decision. In the main event of the evening, John Gunderson tapped out former UFC fighter Karo Parisyan with a first-round guillotine.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu dono de variados títulos da IBJJF, Jonatas Novaes esteve em ação pelo MMA nesse sábado, 16 de junho, no evento SF Shofight 20. Em Springfield, Missouri, o aluno de Rodrigo Comprido foi rápido no gatilho e só precisou de 51 segundos para acertar um chute alto, que fez o ex-lutador do UFC Drew Fickett descer grogue. No chão, o brasileiro desceu o braço para liquidar a fatura.

With a number of IBJJF titles on his CV, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Jonatas Novaes has an MMA fight scheduled for the June 16 SF Shofight 20 event. The fight will be held in Springfield, Missouri, and the Rodrigo Comprido student will take on speedy former UFC fighter Drew Fickett.

“He’s got a lot of experience. I know it’ll be tough, but I have faith in God, I’m leaving there with the win,” said the Brazilian who now counts nine wins on his MMA record. Now his American opponent is 59-fights old, and has won 42 of them.

Dono de vários títulos da IBJJF no currículo, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Jonatas Novaes está com luta de MMA marcada para o próximo dia 16 de junho, no evento SF Shofight 20. Em Springfield, Missouri, o aluno de Rodrigo Comprido vai encarar o rápido ex-lutador do UFC Drew Fickett.

“Ele é um cara com muita experiência, sei que a luta será dura mas estou com fé em Deus, vou sair de lá com mais uma vitória”, disse o brasileiro, que tem hoje nove vitórias no MMA. Já o experiente americano fez 59 lutas, saindo vencedor em 42 delas.

For his stature and Jiu-Jitsu quality, Antonio Peinado was one of Demian Maia’s trumps resulting in his win over Kendall Grove at TUF 12. The Alliance black belt comments on the experience and analyzes how Demian performed based on what their plans for the fight.

Did Demian do what you guys planned to do?

I felt it went perfectly and he put to practice what we trained to do. He took him down and passed guard with ease. He said he would have no problem with Kendall, and everything worked out fine.

What precautionary measures did you work on for this fight that proved to be vital in winning?

Grove is a really big guy and we’d seen him work well against the cage. He has good elbows from the clinch and you have to be careful when shooting in on his legs. We saw these as being his most dangerous facets, and that’s what we worked on. You could see how when he put Kendall against the cage Demian would take him down, just like we trained to do.

Having trained MMA now, do you feel inclined to fight MMA too?

It fired me up a lot. It was a unique experience. I always wanted to do it, and it turns out to be a natural cycle. Who knows? There’s a lot I need to do in Jiu-Jitsu still but, once that’s done, I’ll think about it. It’s a project for the future.

So when will you next compete in the gi?

I’ll be at the European Open and I’ve already started training for it. I want to compete in everything the first half of 2011 and win, God willing.

O Demian fez na luta o que vocês haviam planejado?

Achei que ele foi perfeito e botou em prática exatamente o que treinamos. Botou pra baixo bem e passou a guarda com facilidade. Disse que ele não teria problemas contra o Kendall e deu tudo certo.

Quais pontos vocês tomaram como precaução para esta luta e foram fundamentais na hora do combate?

O Grove era um cara muito grande e vimos que ele trabalha muito bem na grade. É um cara que aplica boas cotoveladas no clinch e que tem que tomar cuidado na hora de entrar nas pernas, por causa das joelhadas. Vimos esses pontos perigosos nele e trabalhamos nisso. Perceba que quando o Kendall colocou nas grades o Demian o derrubou, como vínhamos trabalhando.

Depois de ter treinado MMA, aumentou a vontade de lutar nessa modalidade também?

Instigou bastante. Foi uma experiência única. Sempre tive vontade e acaba sendo um ciclo natural. Quem sabe? Tenho muita coisa ainda no Jiu-Jitsu e, quando estiver realizado, penso mais nisso. É um projeto para o futuro.

Sendo assim, quando volta a lutar de pano?

Vou lutar o Europeu e já comecei a preparação. Quero lutar tudo no primeiro semestre de 2011 e sair vitorioso, se Deus quiser.

Demian Maia Baptista, 33, won another one in the UFC. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt repeatedly wrestled Kendall Grove to the canvas, got mount, back mount, and took the W via unanimous decision.

The Ultimate Fighter 12: Team GSP vs. Team Koscheck Finale took place this December 4 in the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

In the TUF final, Gracie Barra’s Jonathan Brookins earned both the reality show belt and his Jiu-Jitsu purple belt while still in the octagon after beating Michael Johnson on the scorecards.

Demian Maia Baptista, 33 anos, venceu mais uma no UFC. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu botou para baixo o havaiano Kendall Groove numa boa, montou, pegou as costas, e levou a vitória por decisão dos jurados.

A edição do UFC deste dia 4 de dezembro foi dedicada ao reality show “The Ultimate Fighter 12: Team GSP vs. Team Koscheck Finale”, no Palms Casino Resort em Vegas.

At 1.83 meters (6′) tall, Demian Maia is getting ready to deal with the reach of the 1.99-meter (6’5”) Kendall Grove. The fight is set to take place December 4 at the grand finale of the twelfth season of the “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show, and to get around his opponent’s spindly arms and legs, Demian sought out taller training partners, among them Brazilian national No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu champion Antonio Peinado, of team Alliance.

Do you think Grove’s height will make things rough on you?

It may hinder or may help. Truth is that it’s something different. Só I’m training with taller people and taking the opportunity to adapt to it. But I don’t feel it’ll be harder or easier, just different.

And who are these tall sparring partners you brought in to help you?

Ednaldo Lula, who fights in the WFE promotion, is helping me. He is over two meters tall. But I also called on Batista, Antonio Peinado, who just won the Brazilian No-Gi Nationals. He’s going to help me. He’s not quite as tall as Kendall, but he’s really tall and long-limbed. I also have some tall students who are helping me out.

Are you still training in the USA?

I was in the United States, where I trained wrestling for a couple of weeks, but I’m aready back in Brazil. Now I’m heading to Bahia.

If I’m not mistaken, in Bahia you do a lot of boxing training. Do you end up neglecting your main weapon, Jiu-Jitsu, a bit?

Truth is that in Bahia here are a lot of good guys to train Jiu-Jitsu with. As the guys there are not on this Rio/São Paulo axis, they’re not so well known. But there are really good grapplers over there. And Antonio Peinado’s going with me specifically to help me out with that. He’s first-rate.

What do you have to watch out for in you next fight? What are Kendall’s strengths?

I’m going to take a better look at him. There are specific things that I want to work on, but I’d rather not comment. The main this just that I have to watch out for his stature, to adapt to that. He’s got good Jiu-Jitsu and muay thai and I’m going to avoid surprises.

Acha que o Grove pode complicar por causa da altura?

Pode atrapalhar ou ajudar. Na verdade, se torna uma coisa diferente. Então estou treinando com pessoas mais altas e aproveitando para me adaptar a isso. Mas não acho que seja nem mais difícil ou mais fácil, apenas diferente.

E quem são esses sparrings altos que estão ajudando você?

Estão me ajudando o Ednaldo Lula, que se apresenta no evento WFE. Ele tem mais de dois metros. Mas também chamei para treinar comigo o Batista, Antonio Peinado, que acabou de ganhar no Brasileiro Sem Kimono. Ele vai me ajudar. Não chega a ter a altura do Kendall, mas é um cara bem alto e comprido. Também tenho alunos mais altos que me ajudam.

Os treinamentos seguem nos EUA?

Estive nos Estados Unidos, onde treinei wrestling por duas semanas, mas já estou novamente no Brasil. Vou agora para Bahia.

Se não estiver enganado, na Bahia você treina muito boxe. Não acaba que o Jiu-Jitsu, sua principal arma, fica de lado?

Na verdade, na Bahia tem muita gente boa para treinar Jiu-Jitsu. Como a galera lá não está nesse eixo Rio e São Paulo, o pessoal não conhece tanto. Mas tem pessoas muito boas de chão por lá. E o Antonio Peinado vai comigo, justamente para me ajudar nessa parte. Ele é um cara de qualidade altíssima.

O que você deve tomar cuidado para a próxima luta? Quais os pontos fortes do Kendall?

Vou olhar ele melhor ainda. Tem coisas específicas, que quero trabalhar em cima, mas prefiro não comentar. O principal é, justamente, tomar cuidado com a estatura dele, me adaptar a isso. Ele tem o Jiu-Jitsu e o muay thai bons e vou evitar surpresas.
