The 2012 Pan-American Jiu-Jitsu Championship is going along full steam in Irvine, California. Soon the black belts, the big stars of the event, will take center stage (for complete coverage in real time, tune in to the @graciemag Twitter account or our Facebook page). But anyone who thinks they have nothing to learn from the intermediate belts had better think again.

One example is Keenan Cornelius, 21, a purple belt from our GMA Lloyd Irvin’s team. After securing top spot at weight and open weight at this season’s European Championship, the submission wizard repeated the feat at the Pan. Included in his arsenal is a slick armbar from 50/50 guard, which he used to take the likes of João Miyao out of the running.

O Pan de Jiu-Jitsu 2012 segue a todo vapor em Irvine, na Califórnia. Logo os faixas-pretas, os grandes astros do evento, entram em ação (Confira a cobertura do Pan em tempo Real através do Twitter (@graciemag_br) e Facebook.). Mas engana-se quem pensa que não há o que aprender com os atletas das faixas intermediárias.

Um exemplo é Keenan Cornelius, de 21 anos, faixa-roxa da equipe do nosso GMA Lloyd Irvin. Depois de garantir o primeiro posto no peso e absoluto no Europeu desta temporada, o casca-grossa repetiu o feito no Pan. Entre as armas do lutador, um justo armlock da guarda 50/50, que fez feras como João Miyao darem os três tapinhas.

Keenan Cornelius finaliza no absoluto faixa-roxa do Pan 2012

O americano Keenan Cornelius, de 20 anos, foi o grande destaque do segundo dia de competições do Pan 2012.

Natural do Havaí, o peso médio se dedica inteiramente ao Jiu-Jitsu na escola de Lloyd Irvin, em Maryland: “Chego a treinar seis horas por dia”, revelou.

Tanta dedicação já apresenta resultados. Em 2012, Cornelius conquistou peso e absoluto no Europeu, em Lisboa, feito repetido nessa sexta, em Irvine.

Das dez lutas que fez, Keenan finalizou sete oponentes, inclusive João Miyao, nas quartas de final do absoluto.

Em combate rápido, Cornelius supreendeu Miyao com um armlock encaixado na puxada para a guarda “fifty/fifty”.

Tranquilo, Keenan contou que o ataque foi desenvolvido por ele mesmo: “Primeiro usava quando o adversário me puxava, mas depois passei a eu mesmo puxar para a guarda e atacar o braço”.

Na final do aberto, luta dura com o mineiro Fernando Andrade (Alliance), vencida por uma vantagem após empate de 4 x 4.

No absoluto roxa feminino, vitória de Maia Matalon (Gracie Elite), com Sijara Eubanks (Lloyd Irvin) em segundo.

A faixa-azul feminina também conheceu sua campeã absoluta.

A honraria ficou com  a gaúcha Monique Elias (Alliance), que finalizou Amanda Santana (Gracie Clearwater) na chave de pé.

O resultado veio para celebrar o noivado de Monique com Mario Reis, que faz as vezes de professor e (agora) noivo.

Monique comemorou a mudança de carreira, de modelo para lutadora: “Fui ver uma aula do Mario e comecei a treinar. Quando o vi competindo e vencendo, tive a certeza de que queria aquilo para mim!”.

O Pan 2012 segue neste sábado, quando os faixas-pretas entram em ação.

Keenan at the purple belt absolute final

American Keenan Cornelius, 20, was the highlight of the second day of competitions at the 2012 Pan.

A native of Hawaii, the middle weight is devoted entirely to Jiu-Jitsu at Lloyd Irvin’s school in Maryland: “I get to train six hours a day,” he said.

Such dedication is already showing results. In 2012, Cornelius conquered both weight and absolute at the European Open, in Lisbon, something he did again this Friday in Irvine.

Of the ten fights he had, Keenan submitted seven opponents, including João Miyao, in the quarterfinals of the absolute.

In a quick fight, Cornelius surprised Miyao with an armbar from the pull for the “fifty / fifty” guard.

Quiet, Keenan said he himself developed the attack: “First I used it when the opponent was pulling me, but then I started pulling guard and attack their arms.”

At the absolute final match, hard fight with Fernando Andrade (Alliance), won by an advantage after a 4-4 tie.

In the female absolute purple, victory to Maia Matalon (Gracie Elite), with Sijara Eubanks(Lloyd Irvin) in second.

The female blue belt absolute also defined its champion.

The honor went to Monique Elias (Alliance), who submitted Amanda Santana (Gracie Clearwater) on the foot lock.

The result came to celebrate the engagement of Monique with Mario Reis, whodoubles as a teacher and (now) fiance.

Monique also celebrated the career change, from fashion model to fighter: “I went to see a class of Mario and started training. When I saw him competing and winning, I was sure I wanted that for me.”

The 2012 Pan continues this Saturday, when the black belts get into action.
