O lutador e professor de Jiu-Jitsu Renzo Gracie tem uma frase que, se Lyoto Machida e Dan Henderson não conhecem, deviam gravar.

Pois é praticamente o lema da carreira de ambos os supercraques do MMA, que devem fazer o evento coprincipal do próximo dia 23 de fevereiro, no UFC 157, em Anaheim, Califórnia – e não mais no UFC 156 do Super Bowl. Quem vencer, entra em inevitável rota de colisão com o campeão da categoria meio-pesado, Jon Jones. O evento ainda não tem luta principal, segundo o repórter Ariel Helwani, do MMAFighting.com.

Mas o que interessa é que o embate será em fevereiro de 2013. Como ensinou Renzo Gracie, em entrevista publicada faz tempo em GRACIEMAG:

“Não há melhor jeito de comprovar suas qualidades do que contra os melhores. Se um cara afirma que é o melhor do mundo, é para cima dele que você deve ir, e não em outra direção”, disse o Gracie.

É um lema, inclusive, que pode ecoar ainda na cabeça de GSP, ou de Anderson Silva, ou de Jon Jones, mas isso é outro papo.

Com Dan Henderson e Lyoto Machida, a lição sempre valeu. Hendo, desde os tempos do Pride, jamais recusou um oponente pedreira. Em sua última luta, há precisamente um ano, foi com tudo para cima de Mauricio Shogun, ficando com a vitória mesmo após terminar a luta montado e espancado, no UFC 139.

E o que falar de Lyoto, que topava qualquer luta ou desafio desde o início de sua carreira, claro, contanto que houvesse tempo para treinar. Quando o bicho-papão Sokoudjou surgiu, por exemplo, o empresário Jorge “Joinha” Guimarães o ligou no meio de sua lua-de-mel para oferecer a luta. Lyoto topou sem pedir para pensar.

Fighter and Jiu-Jitsu professor Renzo Gracie has a saying that Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson should take note of, if they’re not familiar with it yet.

It has pretty much been the theme of the careers of the two MMA aces, who are tipped to face off in the co-main event at UFC 157 on February 23 in Anaheim, California—no longer at UFC 156 on Super Bowl weekend. The winner will be on an inevitable collision course with the champion of the light heavyweight division, Jon Jones. The show is still lacking a marquee fight, according to MMAFighting.com‘s Ariel Helwani.

But what matters is that the fight will indeed be going down in February 2013. As Renzo Gracie preached in a GRACIEMAG interview a while back:

“There’s no better way to prove how good you are than against the best. If a guy says he’s the best in the world, it’s in his direction that you’d better be gunning, not elsewhere,” said the Gracie.

It’s an adage that should echo in GSP’s head, or Anderson Silva’s, or Jon Jones’s—but that’s a different issue.

As far as Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida are concerned, the lesson is quite pertinent. Ever since back in his days at Pride FC, Henderson has never turned down a first-rate opponent. For his last fight, exactly one year ago, he took on Mauricio Shogun at UFC 139 and won, even after getting mounted and pounded on as the final frame of the fight drew to a close.

And there’s plenty to be said about Lyoto, who has accepted all comers ever since his career began, so long as he had able time to train, of course. When the dreaded Sokoudjou came on the scene, for instance, Lyoto’s manager Jorge “Joinha” Guimarães called him during his honeymoon to offer the fight. Lyoto didn’t think twice before accepting.

So how does one forge such a mind, driven as theirs are? That’s precisely what the issue of GRACIEMAG currently on bookstands addresses.

Jiu-Jitsu black belt Yan Cabral (9 wins) will have to decipher an enigma that’s a tough nut to crack for any fighter: how do you beat an opponent not just by no means common but a legend of the sport.

Yan says he’s ready for his encounter with Kazushi Sakuraba (26w, 15l), 42, at the September 24 Dream 17 show in Sakuraba’s homeland.

“I’m so happy to have this opportunity. It’s always been my dream to fight in Japan, and it couldn’t be under any better circumstances, facing a living legend of the sport right off the bat. It’s what my career has been needing, an opportunity to show the world what I can do,” said the Brazilian black belt living in Europe, about to make his debut in a major event, at Dream.

Cabral took to watching the latest performances of his veteran opponent, who has lost five of his last seven bouts, and is unafraid of getting booed.

“He’s very experienced and surely dangerous but I’ve been training a lot and will show up 200% ready to put on a great fight. My dream was always to fight in Japan precisely because they love their heroes. The Japanese seem to me to be very respectful, love martial arts and respect athletes, whoever they may be. So I don’t feel there will be all that much pressure,” he explains.

On his training, Yan recounts how he did his standup training and Thailand and worked on his Jiu-Jitsu in Barcelona, where he lives.

“I started training at Tiger Gym in Thailand. I went there on vacation but ended up getting invited to fight, so I made the most of it. I carried on with training in Barcelona with my team and even went on to train a month in Rio de Janeiro doing some final adjustments to my game with Dedé Pederneiras of Nova União. I’m fortunate to have so many marvelous people on my side, and I’ll be fighting for them too. A special thanks goes out to my friend David Aranda, who trained with me the whole time,” he said in closing.

O faixa-preta Yan Cabral (9v) vai precisar decifrar um enigma difícil para qualquer lutador: como vencer não um oponente comum, mas uma lenda do esporte.

Yan se diz com a cabeça pronta para o desafio de enfrentar Kazushi Sakuraba (26v, 15d), 42 anos, na sua terra, no Dream 17, do próximo dia 24 de setembro.

“Estou muito feliz com essa oportunidade, era meu sonho lutar no Japão, e não tinha como ser melhor, enfrentar logo uma lenda viva do esporte. É o que eu estava esperando para minha carreira, uma oportunidade para mostrar meu trabalho para todo o mundo”, disse o faixa-preta brasileiro radicado na Europa, que faz no Dream sua estreia num grande evento.

Cabral buscou assistir às últimas exibições do veterano, que perdeu cinco das últimas sete lutas, e não tem medo de ser vaiado.

“Ele é muito experiente e perigoso com certeza, mas venho treinando muito e vou chegar 200% para fazer uma boa luta. Meu sonho sempre foi lutar no Japão justamente porque eles amam seus ídolos. Os japoneses me parecem muito respeitosos, amam luta e respeitam o atleta, seja quem for. Então acho que não vai ter essa pressão toda não”, explica.

Sobre os treinos, Yan afiou a parte em pé na Tailândia e o Jiu-Jitsu em Barcelona, onde vive.

“Comecei os treinos na Tiger Gym tailandesa, estava indo de férias e rolou o convite para lutar, então aproveitei. Continuei treinando aqui em Barcelona, com a minha equipe, e ainda passei um mês no Rio de Janeiro fazendo alguns ajustes no jogo com o Dedé Pederneiras, na Nova União. Tenho sorte de ter tantas pessoas maravilhosas ao meu lado, e vou lutar por elas também. Agradeço especialmente a meu amigo David Aranda, que treinou comigo todos os minutos”, conclui.

One of Japan’s greatest heroes, 1992’s Olympic judo gold medalist Hidehiko Yoshida had his farewell fight this Sunday. The bout was on the card of Astra, a new event promoted by Dream and World Victory Road in Tokyo. The result wasn’t the best. Yoshida ended up dropping a unanimous decision to Kazuhiro Nakamura.

Despite his great judo record, Yoshida’s results oscillate a great deal in MMA. The judoka holds nine wins, eight losses and a draw. In his career, he has beaten such beasts as Don Frye, Maurice Smith and Tank Abbott; drawn with Royce Graciel; and lost to such well known fighters as Wanderlei Silva (twice), Mirko Cro Cop and Josh Barnett.

Um dos grandes ídolos da luta no Japão, judoca medalhista olímpico em 1992, Hidehiko Yoshida fez o último combate da carreira neste domingo. O desafio aconteceu no Astra, novo evento que é produzido pelo Dream e World Victory Road, em Tóquio. O resultado não foi o melhor. Yoshida acabou batido por Kazuhiro Nakamura na decisão unânime dos jurados. 

Apesar dos grandes resultados no judô, o cartel de Yoshida oscila bastante no MMA. O japonês conta com nove vitórias, oito derrotas e um empate. Na carreira, venceu feras como Don Frye, Maurice Smith e Tank Abbott; empatou com Royce Gracie; e perdeu para atletas conhecidos como Wanderlei Silva (duas vezes), Mirko Cro Cop e Josh Barnett.

Wanderlei Silva really will be facing Yoshihiro Akiyama in his next fight, at UFC 116, says Fighters Only website.

The matchup is set for July 3, the day Silva turns 34 years old.

Nicknamed “Sexyama” for his appearances on the catwalks of Japan, the eminent judoka has only lost once in 16 MMA fights, with two No Contests. In 2005, in his second fight, he was knocked out by France’s Jerome LeBanner.

Since then he has submitted Melvin Manhoef, knocked out Denis Kang and built a solid record. Solid but perfectly suited to the likings of Wanderlei, a knockout-crazy slugger dying to notch some wins and salivating about the prospect of facing a fighter like Akiyama, who made his name in the Japanese ring once Wand’s playground.

Wand has faced judo stars Shungo Oyama, Hidehiko Yoshida (twice) and Kazuhiro Nakamura, but has never lost to a judoka, or to a Japanese fighter. A perfect matchup for the careers of both fighters. Or at least the winner.

Wanderlei Silva faz mesmo sua próxima luta contra Yoshihiro Akiyama, no UFC 116, informou o site Fighters Only.

A luta será no dia 3 de julho, dia em que o Silva comemora 34 anos.

Apelidado de “Sexyama” por suas aparições na passarela japonesa, o exímio judoca só perdeu uma luta em 16 no MMA, com dois No Contests. Em 2005, logo em sua segunda luta, caiu por nocaute diante do francês Jerome LeBanner.

De lá para cá, finalizou Melvin Manhoef, nocauteou Denis Kang e construiu um card sólido. Sólido porém perfeito para ser demolido por Wanderlei, um nocauteador doido para acumular vitórias e que chega a salivar quando vê um japonês pela frente. Foram 15 lutas contra lutadores do Japão na carreira.

Wand enfrentou os astros do judô Shungo Oyama, Hidehiko Yoshida (duas vezes) e Kazuhiro Nakamura, mas jamais perdeu para um judoca, nem para um japonês. Uma luta perfeita para a carreira de ambos. Ou ao menos do vencedor.
